Roll up your sleeves

www.awnw.com.au

Albury’s Red Cross Blood Bank is calling on residents to roll up their sleeves and give blood. Our final blood donor article for the month tells of another Border resident’s battle with life and highlights the need for the life-giving liquid. Turn to page three for the full story.

Albury joins statewide plea By KRYSTEN MANUEL PALLIATIVE care in NSW can look forward to $35 million in funds over the next four years, but more than double that is needed to play catch-up to the rest of the country - and Albury knows it. The record-breaking petition signed by 59,844 people across NSW included 676 signatures from Albury and 611 signatures from Corowa. “Rural people have been enormously active, retired palliative care doctor Yvonne McMaster said. “When we break down the signature count, 38 per cent of signatures were from rural and regional NSW, which is a huge lot when you think of the difficulties of access and communication. Dr McMaster is shocked at the statistics comparing NSW with other states of Australia, deeming them not only unacceptable, but unsustainable. “Compared with Victoria and South Australia we have roughly a little bit more than half as much funding for palliative care services. That means rural areas, Albury included, don’t have enough nurses. “Albury doesn’t have a specialist palliative care doctor - but it ought to. “In fact, there isn’t one single specialist or palliative care doctor in southern or western NSW - that’s rough. “So we’ve estimated we’re probably 200 specialist palliative care nurses short in NSW and that’s short of the national average. So this is not some ideal international thing, it’s fewer than other states, proportional to the population in other states.

“

Albury doesn’t have a specialist palliative care doctor, but it ought to. In fact, there isn’t one single specialist or palliative care doctor in southern or western NSW- That is rough.

“The $35 million is really $8.75 million if you split it up into four years, per year. With that shortage of nurses, we really need $20 or $30 million extra, not $8.7 million “It’s really quite unsustainable. Dr McMaster said she believed the Minister for Health genuinely wanted to help palliative care, but communities needed to continue rallying to show parliament that this was still a big unresolved issue. It’s a case of money spent now is money saved later. “I’m getting the figures together to show the treasury that if they fund palliative care, it helps people to stay at home when they’re dying which is what most people want, she said. “That will save an enormous amount of money in hospital costs, and hospitals will be freed up to have fewer waiting lists and do the things they’re designed for.

Life is a cabaret, old chum CABARET... The effervescent Natasha Quinn will take to the stage next weekend to entertain the audience in Livid Productions’ Back to the ’60s cabaret. The Jazz Basement show is sure to be a hit for Christmas break-up parties or just a night on the town, with a twist. For more details turn to page 6.

HEAT‌ With the mercury quickly rising, don’t forget to keep your pets cool.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE weekend has seen temperatures across the Border suddenly climb into the mid-thirties, with a top of 39 degrees expected today. With this recent weather change, pet owners are again urged to make provisions for the furrier members of their families to save them from discomfort, illness or even death. While most pet owners know the basic rules to keep their animals cool, local veterinarian, Dr Jana Stevenson has a few crucial but less obvious tips for us to remember. “It’s good to have little baths, like the shells you put a bit of water in, she said. “It’s not good to wet them all-round - if you’re going to wet them, just wet them on the belly, because if they’re all wet the sun will draw more heat on the top. “It’s best to have cold towels and they can just

sit on those if it’s really hot, or if they have overheated. “If they’re still trying to change their winter coat, groom out all their excess hair using a fruminator comb, where you can actually strip them and thin their hair out. “Make sure they’re not overweight because overweight dogs will have trouble with the heat, they don’t cope as well. Dr Stevenson also reminds pet owners that certain breeds of dog, like boxers, are more sensitive to the heat, and any animal with health conditions will need to be kept cool and checked more so than a healthy dog. And always remember these golden rules: - Never leave your animal in a locked car, even with the window down. - Exercise animals in the cooler parts of the day. - Always carry water and a foldable bowl for your dog when out and about. - Put non-zinc containing sunscreen on the animal’s nose. If you see your dog having difficulty breathing, if it has thickened saliva, vomiting or diarrhoea, take it to the vet immediately. In a short time, overheated animals can suffer critical damage to their nervous system, heart, liver or brain which can result in death.

THIS month we have focused on the importance of blood donation. In our first story we highlighted a brother and sister, who through necessity became aware of this much-needed selfless act. “I do it because I want to give something back to the community were the heart-felt words from Border teen, Tyler Shaw. Tyler’s sister, Breanne was diagnosed with bone cancer just two years ago and some 50 blood transfusions later, she is in remission. We noted the father and daughter team of Melissa and Gary Wise, who lined up together to offer their 50th donation, and three generations of Barrows men - David, his son Roger and grandson Lochie all attending the Albury Red Cross Blood clinic together. At just 13, Imogen Wallace was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, cancer of the bone, and her life depended on donations of blood - she too is in remission. This week we highlight the bravery of Warrant Officer Class Two Dennis Ramsay whose young family relied on the selfless acts of others, and who continues to battle the after-effects of his illness. Of course these are but a few of the stories in the wider community. One in three of us will need blood in our lives, but only one in 30 of us donate. As Dennis Ramsay pointed out, it’s easy to donate money but we rarely know the full extent of the donation. “With blood you know where it’s going. With a gold coin, you don’t know how much is going to the recipient. And with blood it’s a totally different donation - it’s a life-saving donation, were his words. Next time you’re thinking of helping out a charitable organisation, why not think about giving blood? The donation will soon replenish itself without cost, and you’ll sleep easy knowing you’ve helped save a life. Call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au for further information.

Gift that gets there By TREVOR JACKSON

HAVE you ever stopped to think about where your financial donations go? Many of us donate money to various charity groups, and often we hear about those funds being whittled away through a combination of administration and other costs. But donating blood is one area where there is no doubt about the recipients. Quite simply, those who need the help receive it, as Wodonga resident Warrant Officer Class 2, Dennis Ramsay told NewsWeekly. “With blood, it’s not like giving a gold coin donation,” he said. “With blood you know where it’s going. With a gold coin, you don’t know how much is going to the recipient. And with blood it’s a totally different donation - it’s a life-saving donation.” WO2 Ramsay was diagnosed with group A streptococcus, toxic shock syndrome and multiorgan failure in 2008. He was hospitalised in an induced coma for 32 days, followed by amputation below both knees. “I pretty much needed most of the blood products because when I was in multi-organ failure they had to do the amputations,” he said. “When I began to recover I needed blood cells such as iron to get my energy back. “I can’t remember how many bags I had, but it was quite a few - a lot of people saved my life.” WO2 Ramsay had just returned to Townsville from an overseas Defence Force deployment when diagnosed with his illness. He’s now going through a defence force plan to return to civilian life. While he continues his recovery he participates in such sports as hand cycling, trying to remain physically and mentally fit, for his own sake and for that of his family. For that opportunity WO2 Ramsay is very thankful. “You can say thankyou very much, but it’s a feeling you can’t really give back,” he said. “I had so much blood - I don’t know who’s blood it was. I try to help now - although I can’t give blood and put myself at risk - so I’d rather show support and get other people donating.” Mr Ramsay added he had nothing against financial donations, but said blood was not as readily available as cash. “You have two dollars in your pocket, well you have half a pint in your body,” he said. “I’d rather spend two dollars and get myself a drink, then donate blood and give six or seven people some life. “That’s the way I look at blood donation. It’s not coming out of your pocket. You can go and eat an apple or something and it’ll fill back up.” Your blood volume is restored within 24 to 48 hours and your iron level return to normal within a month. One in three of us will use blood products in our lifetime, but only one in 30 donates. Every donation saves three lives. Call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au

Daring dolls, brassy bears By KRYSTEN MANUEL “HE’S a naughty boy, that one,” long-time bear and doll crafter, Joy Daniels said. “He’s a bit naughty - Fred the Flasher. He puts his hands in his pocket and he flashes, and he has a girlfriend called Frieda Fluster who is a natural blonde, which I can prove.” Ms Daniels is a cheeky great-grandmother who will be exhibiting and speaking at the Doll, Bear and Hobby Show this Saturday at Mirambeena Hall. “It keeps me out of mischief, I always say,” she said. “I subscribe to the saying that a day without a good belly laugh is a wasted day.” Ms Daniels has had a stand at the Doll, Bear and Hobby Show since the early ’90s. “It’s going to be bigger and better this year we have at least 27 stands to provide interest, so it will be good.” Ms Daniels’ passion for bear and doll making is a long-standing affair, with roots deep in her childhood. “It was probably the deprivation in my early

AS part of Social Inclusion Week, the Albury Wodonga Community College will be hosting three classes that aim to give basic computer skills to seniors. Social Inclusion Week’s theme for this year is collaborate, connect and celebrate with a focus on mental health and engaging older Australians. “We picked up some funding through NSW Education and Communities office,” manager of the Albury Wodonga Community College, Anna Speedy said. “It’s about increasing social inclusion, in particular for seniors. “It’s about making sure they have basic skills that allow them to not only switch on their computer and use it, but use it to stay in contact with family and the grandkids.” Ms Speedy believes that seniors need computer skills just as much as the younger generations. “Its the way people do it (communicate) now,” she said. “Their grandkids might live in England, so they’re going to need to know how to use Skype and email them. “Also, these people travel - the grey nomads!

years that spurred my interest in dolls and teddies,” Ms Daniels said. “It’s born out of the fact that I didn’t have a bear or a doll as a little girl because it was during the war. “They couldn’t get dolls and bears at that time, so I was about 12 before I got my first doll, and by then I didn’t want it anyway, they were only rag dolls.” Ms Daniels has been hand-crafting bears and dolls for over 20 years, having made bears for the movie Strange Bedfellows and owned her own business, Joybells Creations, for 12 years. “I started with soft cloth dolls, I don’t do porcelain dolls,” she said. “I have done a few clay-faced dolls and a papier mache doll. They’re fairly rare, the papier mache dolls - it’s a dying art.” The show will be held at Mirambeena Hall, Saturday 1 December, 10am- 4pm. Adults $5, children $2, children under three are free. A $19,000 replica of the first monoplane constructed and flown in Australia will be gifted to the Albury Library Museum. “The replica will be designed and produced to mark the 100th anniversary of Azor Robbins and Alexander Porter’s first flight in Albury,” Member for Albury, Greg Aplin said. “The semi-permanent installation will be accompanied by interpretative text, an interactive flight simulator and discovery cabinets.” Robbins and Porter’s purpose-built garage stood right where the Albury Library Museum is today. The installation comes in response to Albury city council’s successful application to the NSW Arts Funding Program- part of the NSW Government’s $56.2 million annual Arts Funding Program. Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality, Racing and the Arts, George Souris, said the Arts Funding Program was a key player in spreading artistic opportunity across NSW. “The Government’s Art Funding Program plays a key role in ensuring NSW continues to be the cultural and creative capital of Australia,” Mr Souris said. “Funding for new projects forms an integral part of this program by encouraging new artistic and cultural activities to flourish and grow.”

BLOKES in Chiltern this week offered thanks to council with a barbecue to unveil an access ramp. Indigo Shire mayor, councillor Barb Murdoch said the Men’s Shed was established after the Chiltern Lion’s Club received a State Government grant. “They built the shed on the site of the old Chiltern hospital and the group has gone from strength to strength,” Cr Murdoch said. Corowa RSL’s Michael Wighton presented the men’s group with $500 towards a much-needed dust extractor. President of the Chiltern Men’s Shed group Chris Brown said the members had had a very active year, particularly in conjunction with the Chiltern Primary School, where they had been working with the students to teach them wood and metal working skills that have resulted in practical items they could use. “The members and children have made picnic tables for the school grounds and this year have worked on a pergola and a wrought iron mural,” Mr Brown said. “Donations of equipment from the townspeople allow the members to tackle almost any job they want.” A woman’s blacksmithing group is also making good use of the shed.

to come out and celebrate their Christmas work parties, wear the ’60s gear if they want and just have a good time.” Mrs Kolisnyk said the nine-piece band, featuring seven vocalists was sure to be a hit. “We’ve had Trevor Cooper arranging the music,” she said. “He’s done a great job with the band, and if you like ’60s music or live music, this is a really good big band. Rehearsals have been going well and we’re all having fun because the music is just so great.” The night will be compared by the effervescent Natasha Quinn who’s sure to keep everyone laughing. In true ’60s style, people can bring their own nibbles along and drinks will be available at bar prices. Shows run Friday and Saturday nights and bookings can be made through the Albury Entertainment Centre at $33 per head.

MEGA-FAUNA‌ Unlike most sculptures, Ben Gilbert’s work was built for touch and play.

Milawa: muse to sculpture exhibit By KRYSTEN MANUEL MILAWA is hosting a sculpture extravaganza this weekend, with the simultaneous opening of Muse Gallery Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition 2012 and Hill Form, as well as the Creative Kids Sculpture Exhibition on Sunday. “I’ve been looking at our lawn out the front for a number of years and always thought of curating an outdoor sculpture show, artist and director of Muse Gallery George Piercy said. “There’s 14 artists I’ve invited to show and I’d say 90 per cent made works specifically for this exhibition. Some of the artists and works include Paul Blizzard - exhibiting fossil sculptures, Rudy Jass - displaying his outdoor kinetic sculptures driven by wind, local blacksmith Richard Walker who is known for his highly refined skills in hand-forging steel, and international artist Ben Gilbert. Mr Gilbert has recently sold a sculp-

ture, Humpback Battleship, to Princess Mary of Denmark and will be displaying Agency of Play at the exhibition. Agency of Play is both a sculpture and play equipment for children, a piece that ‘encourages intimacy between people and nature.’ “This piece is particularly appropriate because, historically, there was a large poisoning of indigenous people near Muse, at the small billabong there, Mr Gilbert said. “This piece is about is about that. “The turtle has a small hole in it, only children can fit through it. If you stand up in it you get to head height, but it restricts adults. “I made this turtle as the shell of the mega-fauna, as a mythical creature. Hill Form, a separate but simultaneous exhibition, was another brainchild of George Piercy, in collaboration with printmaker and painter, Jeff Gardner. “I’ve been developing a shape, which

is a hill with some trees and a person on top, and I’ve been getting other artists to decorate them, Mr Piercy said. “For people who don’t do ceramics it gives them a chance to put that work into ceramics. “The hill is a symbology of secludedness and contemplation. Children are also encouraged to attend the exhibition to attend the Creative Kids Sculpture. Artist Jo Briscomb will deliver two sessions for children aged 7-13 years who will learn how to sculpt using soft forming wire, stone, timber, and some found objects. The exhibitions officially open at 2pm this Saturday 1 December, with children’s sculpture on Sunday 2 December at 11.30am and 2pm. Bookings for children’s sculpture are essential. Bond, James Bond MOVIE: Skyfall DURATION: 145 minutes I WOULD definitely not call myself a Bond fan, not until I’d seen this latest instalment. For those who are die-hard Bond fans and weren’t sure of Daniel Craig before, this film well and truly solidifies Craig as a big contender for the ‘best Bond’. Between the storyline, the high

!NNA +ENDRICK 2EBEL 7ILSON

level of character development and exploration, the nostalgic elements of old Bond films sneakily slipped in, and breathtaking cinematography, this Bond could be the best yet. M (Judi Dench) plays a much more involved role, where her decisions are questioned and the past creeps up quickly. Bond’s loyalty to M is in turn questioned after M makes a decision that put 007’s life in danger, to the point where everyone believed he was dead

My lens, my eye THROUGH THE LENS‌ Andrew Follows is led through the world by his guide dog Eamon and his camera.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL THROUGH the Looking Glass, a new exhibition from photographer, Andrew Follows, is not only a stunning display of work, but an aptly named exhibition. Mr Follows is almost totally blind and uses his camera to see the world around him - to see a brighter, more vibrant world, through the looking glass. “I’ve got an eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa, Mr Follows explains. “So I’ve got no vision in my left eye and my right eye has tunnel vision about the size of a 20cent piece. “With macro shots, all of a sudden I can see all that beauty inside a flower, the hairy legs of a spider or the coloured lines on a snail shell. “I love to document the landscapes, to document the changing world that we are living in. Mr Follows has been actively pursuing photography for about four years at the advice of a friend and is excited to run with his talent, having already found success. “Photography started off as a way to see the world around me, he said.

“So I take photographs and throw them onto the computer, then I get to enlarge them and see what you’re seeing - all the colours, shapes, depth and things that are happening around you. “Four years ago a friend said, ’you’re getting good at this, you have a natural ability. Mr Follows took photography classes with world-renowned photographer, Martin Bonnici. “I ended up working with him for the whole year, it became a project for him as well, Mr Follows said. “He taught me all the ins and outs of digital photography. “After the success of my first exhibition, I got really excited and did a Journey of Changes up at Narbethong, which is another bushfire recovery exhibition. “The exhibition brought all the communities together and that three-day weekend we ended up raising $11,000 for the Narbethong CFA. The exhibition opens at 6pm, 3 December, at the Burke Museum in Beechworth. RSVP at sreid@indigoshire@vic.gov.au or 02 6028 1166 by 30 November.

A special satisfaction WHAT is a specialist hi-fi store and is it relevant in today’s market? The answer is probably the same if you sell photography, sewing machines, computers, tools or in fact any product that usually requires additional guidance. A person’s perception of the hi-fi store can conjure up images for the fastidious audiophile through to a CD retailer. A specialist hi-fi store is generally somewhere between the two. The specialist store is usually passionate about their trade and works alongside the customer to match the most suitable product to do the job at their budget.

The wheel is turning back to the specialist store for a number of reasons. Importantly the specialist retailer usually has lower overheads and can compete on price with quality items, plus they usually provide better equipped staff to qualify your needs. The other format that has changed retail is the national chain’s stores own house brands - these are labels usually recognisable from a past well-known brand to negate price matching issues they promote. What happens to the quality brands that have been shown the door by the bulk stores, they now reside at the specialist retailer. Ironically these major brands need

the specialist retailer more than ever and this leverage provides the customer a very viable alternative. The other overlooked perception is the apparent lack of store fronts - they’re certainly there but not as you know it. Specialist retailers are often competing with specialists across Australia on line and engaging through social media. Where a town like Albury may have only four refrigerator retailers, a specialist hi-fi retailer is competing across the length and breadth of Australia and at times the world. Our customers come from all around Australia.

Impreza impresses By TREVOR JACKSON

IMPRESSIVEE‌ The Subaru Impreza is one of those vehicles you just want to keep driving.

4x4

WHENEVER I think of the Subaru Impreza, I think of the late, great Possum Bourne. Bourne was well known for his ability to push the Impreza to the limits on the rally circuit, providing plenty of entertainment along the way. When offered an Impreza for this month’s road test I jumped at the chance. Of course Bourne’s Impreza was the legendary WRX - my test vehicle was the base model 2.0i sedan. But I do like testing the base model vehicles. I reckon it gives a good indication of how a vehicle performs, taking into account the reality and finances of the average motorist. The 2.0i is an attractive vehicle, quite sizable to look at, with a well-finished exterior. A new Lineartronic CVT transmission is now fitted to the Imprezas, something the salesman said made a big difference in performance and economy. The two-litre petrol engine produces 110kw of power and returns impressive fuel figures of 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined. The salesman also noted I had plenty of ground clearance - a nice thought when coupled to the all-wheel-drive Subaru is so famous for, but certainly not noticeable - this is a family sedan, not an SUV. “And remember, when you pull up at the lights, it has stop-start technology, he said.

“You can isolate it, but you’re better off experiencing it. More on that shortly. Inside space was more than adequate, the seats comfortable and all the creature comforts you need for everyday motoring. Entertainment included the usual features, CD, AM/FM, MP3, WMA, iPod and USB connectivity, while steeringwheel-mounted controls for Bluetooth allow for hands-free phone calls. The Impreza is one of those cars you step into and instantly like - at least it was for me. The CVT transmission seemed to work well from the outset, with manual mode just an easy flick sideways of the gear stick, the gears changed by paddles mounted on the back of the steering wheel. I much prefer a sequential-style shifter but the Impreza doesn’t have one, so it’s a case of using what you have, and once accustomed to the paddles, they soon become second nature. Pulling up at a set of traffic lights I noticed a sound of, well, silence. That stop-start technology I was told about had kicked in. Holding pressure on the brake pedal saw the engine shut down completely, restarting again with a slight release of pressure. Over the course of the weekend it became apparent the technology wouldn’t activate unless suitable pressure was applied - but as I was told, it could be bypassed anyway. Power from the two-litre engine was

If you’re thinking about bullbars, the first thing you should think about is the type of bar that’s right for your vehicle and the kind of driving you do.

Buying a bullbar will help improve your vehicles protection, appearance and it’s capabilities once you’re off the tar.

Beach and sand driving

THE vast majority of Australian 4WD destinations relate to either the coast, for beach access and fishing, or the desert regions, for the driving challenge and historical interest. For this reason, sand driving skills are essential. Successful sand driving is a combination of correct tyre pressures and gear selection which allows the vehicle to progress without the engine labouring or over revving. This combination of factors becomes second nature with sufficient practice. Some of the well-known areas for beach driving include Fraser Island QLD, Port Stephens NSW, Kingston/Robe South Australia and many areas along the extensive coastline of WA. Tyre pressures for beach driving are most effective in the range of 15 to 18 psi. Beware the inexperienced hero driver, who claims his wonder vehicle allows him to beach drive with road pressures in his tyres. Uneducated four-wheel-drivers are ruining the chances of beach access all around Australia by driving onto beaches, usually downhill with hard tyres, then finding they must drive at high speed, with high revs, sticking to the wet hard pack, then rushing, usually uphill, through pedestrian beach users in an attempt to regain the safety of the car park. It’s a recipe for disaster easily overcome with some experience. Tidal changes in areas like Weipa in Cape York require care when launching your boat at low tide. Many a car and trailer have been submerged at high tide - an amusing photo shoot but a costly

quite impressive really. Leaving the transmission to do its own thing, I found the legal limit on the highway easily attainable in one smooth action. Playing with the paddles simply made it more enjoyable. And while on the subject of smooth performance, the cruise control was just that. It’s one of the best I’ve come across, and while that may sound a little menial, I live and die by the cruise control. There’s no better way to hold a legal speed, even in slow speed zones, than with a quality cruise control. The Impreza’s set-up worked well, holding a constant speed up and down hills, without the harshness I’ve previously encountered. My own Falcon doesn’t stack up, although it is a little long in the tooth now, but neither did the new Liberty I tested earlier this year - and other brands I’ve driven, often far more expensive, haven’t impressed me like the Impreza did. Handling was another feature where I consider the Impreza excels. While this is no WRX, it does handle well enough in the twisty stuff, while still soaking up the rough spots to provide a comfortable ride. It’s this compromise that sold me. Add to that the extra ground clearance, the safety of all-wheel-drive, still keeping within the confines of the average family sedan, and I think this Subaru is certainly a winner. I’d be more than happy to park one in my driveway.

Sand dunes are an interesting challenge and can be an exciting experience. Always ensure a red safety flag is attached so that others can see you travelling up and over the dunes. People often imagine sand dune driving might be similar to driving on the moon. Desert sand driving is usually accompanied by a different texture of sand, generally remote regions, and the need to carry heavy loads of fuel, water and other necessities. This generally leads to the practical use of tyre pressures in the 25 to 30 psi range.

Driving on reduced tyre pressures must be accompanied by a reduction in vehicle speed. The further distances you drive in sandy conditions, the more you realise that the right tyre pressure can vary a number of times in the course of a day’s travel. This means that the travel-ready off-roader will always carry a good tyre pump, tyre gauge and, if sufficiently well heeled, a set of automatic tyre deflaters. That local advantage Four delivery vehicles service customers and as far afield as Holbrook, Myrtleford, Wangaratta, Corryong and Corowa. Mr Bensted said the success of the company has always hinged on its staff, with a strong focus on experience and a company history of long-serving employees. “We have dedicated, knowledgeable staff in place, he said. “Bruce Butler has been with the company for 28 years, three of our staff are qualified mechanics and we’re one of a few stores that run two full-time reps. “We service over 300 trade customers so our staff need to understand the industry and keep up to date with new technology. With the majority of staff being local

Border residents, Mr Bensted said he was proud of the performance of the business here in Albury, compared to the other stores in the company. “The company has 103 stores across Australia now, and we’re regularly in the top 15, he said. “It’s a good operation but it’s also a good staff. We’re often the highest selling country store and our two reps are regularly placed in the top 10 in the company. “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. The product range offered is also a major contributing factor in the success of the business. Bursons boast one of the country’s most comprehensive range of automotive parts, accessories and workshop equipment available from quality manufacturers, all available here on the Border.

SERVICE‌ Peter Bensted says he’s proud of the service offered by his team here in Albury.

BEGINNING as a small business run from the back of a van in 1971, Bursons Auto Parts has grown to be one of the largest and most progressive companies in the industry. Burson’s is a trade-focused business, with 85 per cent of their automotive parts sales coming from trade customers. The Albury branch has been established since 1984, being the sixth created in the growing company portfolio. Albury store manager Peter Bensted has been with the company for 12 years and he says he’s seen continued growth in that time, expanding from seven local employees to a current staff of 12. The business moved to its current location in Wagga Road around 15 years ago and has continued to provide a quality service to the Border region.

Systems fuel savings

CONVERSION‌ Sam Parker, Tas Davies, Kevin Liao and Rob Marcucci have the experience to offer advice and service for your gas conversion.

PETROL costs are rising, and there seems to be little respite in the foreseeable future. LPG can be around half the cost of petrol at the pump, and the savings to be had with modern systems continue to make a conversion for your car a very viable option. And it’s not just older cars people are converting to reap the benefits both at the pump and from the government rebates. New vehicles can also be converted to gas through Albury Auto Gas. “If you have a conversion done before registration there is a $2000 rebate, business co-owner Tas Davies said. “We can put an engine warranty on the vehicle to cover the work - a three year 150,000 kilometre warranty - then

you have fuel savings for the life of the car. It really is worth considering. For second-hand vehicles there is still a government rebate of $1000 in place. For a cost of around $4000 to fit a quality sequential direct injection system, taking into account the rebates in place, the systems can pay for themselves in just a few years, depending on kilometres covered. “We recommend the direct injection systems as a minimum, Mr Davies said. “We also have direct liquid injection systems which the new Ford Falcons are running. “We can fit those to certain vehicles which gives another level of performance, sometimes an improvement over petrol.

With three qualified mechanics and an apprentice on board, Albury Auto Gas also offer a pre-inspection service for those looking to purchase a second-hand vehicle with a gas system already fitted. Mr Davies said, when looking to have a vehicle converted to gas, it was important to have a quality system fitted by a reputable installer to ensure you enjoy the full benefits. “LPG has been given a bit of a negative profile through people not having the proper kits fitted, which is a shame because performance-wise, the technology is so good that you can’t even tell the difference between gas and petrol, he said. “But don’t go for the cheapest solution - go for a quality kit that’s installed correctly and you really can’t go wrong.

Motoring

Albury Wodonga

All set for highway cruising By TREVOR JACKSON

STYLISH‌ Tank-mounted speedo looks the part.

CRUISE‌ The V-Star 650 is ready to cruise in style right out of the box.

I HAVEN’T always been a cruiser man. Back in my learner days I went the way of the sports bike. There was a 250cc limit in place and no cruisers of that size really grabbed my attention. Pity Yamaha’s V-Star 650 Custom wasn’t around then. Yes, it’s a 650cc leaner-legal cruiser - and not a bad one at that. I’m told it outsells all other cruisers in Australia, and I had to find out why. The true cruiser style shows through with an upright seating position, forward controls and a VTwin engine coated with lashings of chrome.

Staggered pipes look the part, and nice touches like tank-mounted speedo, a fat, rigid-look rear end and big custom-style headlight finish it off well. In fact, straight out of the box the ’Star’ looks good. First impressions left me a little wanting - for power and comfort. I found the seating position a bit cramped and the urge a bit down. After a few hours in the saddle I began to appreciate the bike for what it was and what it offered. There is enough power to keep the newby happy and the seating position wasn’t all that bad. You can easily place both feet flat on the tarmac at traffic lights - ideal for the shorter rider. Handling is good in most situ-

ations. The bike feels solid underfoot and drops well into corners although it’s worth remembering, this is a cruiser, not a sports bike. Having said that, a little blast out around Lake Hume provided a bit of fun. You just have to understand the shortcomings of any cruiser in the twisty stuff and make the necessary adjustments. The legal limit is reached with ease and once there, it’s rock-solid and inspires confidence. Now I’m sure the Yamaha won’t appeal to everyone, but if you’re looking to get into riding and want a decent cruiser to get you started, or even something to run to work and back on with a bit style. it’s certainly worth a look.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Room to move By TREVOR JACKSON

RARELY do you find such an affordable family property in Wodonga’s Cambourne Park area. If room to move for a growing family is important then look no further - this well maintained, spacious home ticks all the boxes with space, privacy and views in a true valuefor-money property. A leadlight entry suggests a touch of class within and opens to an inviting foyer, with tiles stretching through to the living areas. Tasteful French doors, with a splash of colour, lead to an expansive main living area. Here you’ll find ample space for all your entertainment needs, a brick feature wall and room for a large dining suite to sit pride of place. The area can be closed off to the main section of the home while entertaining friends or holding intimate dinner parties. A spacious kitchen is designed for function and style with stainless gas cooktop and electric oven. The ample bench space includes a breakfast bar while a dishwasher takes the chore out of the mundane. Tiles reach from benchtop to overhead cupboards, providing an easy-clean solution and views are offered over the double sink. An informal area allows for re-

4

laxed dining or family entertaining, adding to the overall function of the home. The master bedroom includes a spacious walk-in robe and tasteful ensuite, with the added bonus of a built-in mirrored robe for that extra his-and-hers storage space. The remaining three double bedrooms all include built-in robes. A spacious main bathroom includes a bath and shower with a separate toilet adjacent. The laundry is also of ample proportions with built-in storage. Outside an undercover verandah would easily double as a peaceful alfresco dining space, with room for a barbecue, or maybe the addition of an outdoor kitchen. Privacy is assured with high fences while beautiful views across the surrounding hills are not hindered. Access to the tidy, landscaped and well maintained yard is also available via the double garage with a rear roller door in place. A garden shed sits high and dry on a concrete slab offering plenty of protection for the home-handyman’s tools. Ducting heating and cooling complete this neat-as-a-pin package which is ready to simply move in and enjoy.

Cup run tonic after horse fall ordeal By DANIELLE GALVIN AND GARRY HOWE

SUNDAY’S Wodonga Cup could provide a welcome tonic for 77-year-old Hughie Bourke, who spent two days last week lying in a paddock with broken bones after falling from a horse on his property in Melbourne’s south eastern fringe. Hughie will be following the fortunes of his cup runner Another Prelate while resting up from his ordeal in The Alfred hospital in Melbourne. He races Another Prelate, in the care of trainer Quinton Scott at Cranbourne, in partnership with a group including his brothers Michael, Brien and Gavan, their sister Mary Gannon, who runs the Colac Herald newspaper and Hughie’s son-in-law Darren Crocker, a former North Melbourne footballer. The Bourkes are a well-known racing family from Pakenham. Their late brother David was chairman of the Victoria Racing Club, among other posts, and had a hand in attracting the first international winner of the Melbourne Cup, the Dermott Weld-trained Vintage Crop. Now recovering in The Alfred hospital with a shattered femur and pelvis, Hughie reckons he spent his marathon ordeal enjoying the company of animals on his Caldermeade property, near Pakenham, but was disappointed to miss the day’s horse racing. The drama started on Wednesday last week when the well-known local identity went riding on his 1000-acre property. Falling from his horse, he remained injured on the ground for almost a day and a half, watching the changing sky and surrounded by foxes and cattle. His daughter Marcia Crocker said her dad, true to form, was in high spirits and thankful for the friends and family who weren’t ready to see the back of Bourke just yet. Despite his lengthy ordeal, he told rescuers Claudia Barker and her husband Ken, long-time friends of the Bourkes, that he’d only been there for about one hour. Or so he thought.

RECOVERY… Hughie Bourke is surrounded by family after his recent fall from a horse that left him lying in a paddock for 32 hours. In fact, he had been lying there for 32 hours. His friends were alerted to the fact that something may have been wrong when his local paper, the Pakenham Gazette, was still in his mailbox a day after it had been delivered. “We knew that Hughie can never wait for delivery of the Gazette and by this stage we were very worried,” Ms Barker said. They drove down to the stockyards and saw some movement near a trough. “There was an arm holding a hanky,” Ms Barker said. Hughie is recovering well from surgery on his hip. And while “the old cocky” has a long road to recovery ahead, he told his kids that it was

“bloody beaut” watching the clouds go down and sleeping next to the animals on his farm. His spirits will be lifted even further should Another Prelate salute at Wodonga on Sunday. Another Prelate, a last start Mornington winner, is one of 20 nominations for the cup. Others include the Gerald Egan-trained Jetconi, who will be attempting a record third straight victory in the race, and the Brian Cox-trained trio Murdoch’s Joy, This Cat’s Magic and Minnie Downs. Cox is going for a Bart Cummings-like domination of the race. If successful on Sunday, it would be his 11th winner! The prizemoney this year has been increased to $80,000 to coincide with the 80th running of the race and champion trainer David Hayes will be a special guest of the club.

Cars of the Future By TREVOR JACKSON

THE final pure Holden versus Ford V8 Supercar round is upon us. This weekend the teams have headed to Sydney’s Olympic Park and will go head to head one more time before other manufacturers line up on the starting grid next season. Brad Jones Racing team boss Kim Jones said the Border team was progressing well with their future plans. “We’re very busy building our new Cars of the Future,” he said. “There’s not going to be a lot of time off over the Christmas period because we’ve got all this new stuff coming in which is a whole new ball game, but it’s all looking good.” Jones says the new Car of the Future format could throw a few spanners in the works, and teams such as BJR might well be the beneficiaries.

“It might help us because it’s a bit of a shuffle when anything new comes in, especially a broad-brush sweep like we’re about to have,” he said. “But we have a very good engineering base here, the guys work hard and we tend to get on top of things very quickly. “It is going to be a complete shift because the people who have been going to circuits and making fine adjustments in the past, everything is out the window and we all have to start again. “I think it’ll be a funny mix next year. You’ll have teams that are not normally competitive be competitive. You’ll have teams that are very competitive maybe having mechanical dysfunction because we don’t know where the component’s life is - they might push a little too far and have something break. “But the cream will rise to the top, it always does, it doesn’t matter what sport it is - the good

FUTURE… Brad Jones Racing is on track with its Car of the Future program. people succeed.” And Jones is hoping the team can finish on a high in Sydney to farewell the current format. “Brighty wasn’t so quick at Sydney last year but the year before he was very quick,” he said. “If we could have three cars in the top 10 it would be absolutely fantastic. If we could get a podium, that would be a good deal.”

Hungry like the Wolves By TREVOR JACKSON WODONGA’S Lady Wolves are looking the goods again this season, with just one loss to date in the Country Basketball League season. With minimal changes to the line-up, success was always on the cards. Taking the reins after last season’s success, North East Conference victors, was always going to be a big job for incoming coach Doug Polmear, but he says he’s more than pleased with his team’s effort so far and has big plans for the season. “Last year we probably should have won the state title,” he said. “It was a big trip travelling to Mount Gambier. “I don’t see any reason we can’t go on and win the whole thing this season.” Polmear says while the majority of the team has remained in place, last week’s demoralising 67-35 defeat of Wangaratta showed the depth he has on the bench.

“All the girls can play,” he said. “The younger girls - you can bring them on with confidence, knowing they’re not going to let you down - they can certainly hold their own.” And Polmear was full of praise for the whole team. “I’m not surprised at how they’re playing,” he said. “The core group has been together for quite a while. They have a good work ethic on the court. On the whole they’re pretty well self-motivated. They’re a pretty easy group to coach really.” The Lady Wolves will be back on court at Wodonga at noon, 9 December after this week’s road trip to Deniliquin. LEFT: MOTIVATED… Doug Polmear says his team is motivated to take the state title in the current CBL season.

Local Sport Back on the track

FUN… David Thurley and Nicole Washington will be looking to stay ahead of Simon Corr in tomorrow night’s celebrity challenge.

By TREVOR JACKSON LAVINGTON velodrome will explode tomorrow night when track cycling returns in earnest, and it’s all in the name of helping sick children. The third annual Flutterby Foundation Track Cycling Carnival will pit riders from the Border against those from as far afield as Echuca in a night of fast-paced action. Juniors and seniors will take to the track in events such as the motor-paced keirin, junior handicap and wheelraces and the main event of the evening, the Flutterby Foundation Wheelrace over 2000 metres. And for a bit of fun a celebrity challenge will again be a highlight.

Local dignitaries such as Radio 2AY’s Simon Corr, Albury councillors David Thurley and Daryl Bettridge, and yours truly will be pedalling hard against local triathlete Jesse Featonby, Clancy the Koala and other guest riders. The first instalment will be a twolap wheelrace over a specially designed course and depending on availability, or barring injury, a second event will take place later in the program. But on the serious side, the local cycling fraternity are sure to provide plenty of support for the local charity, with money raised going to a well-deserving cause. “The Flutterby Foundation will be supporting work being undertaken at

the Albury Base Hospital children’s ward,” event organiser Brendan Washington said. “They’re setting up two new oncology chairs for the children so they won’t have to travel to Melbourne for chemotherapy. They’re also upgrading the playground to make it less stressful for the children and, if we make enough money, we’ll also donate to the Leukaemia Foundation.” Washington said the night was about promoting track cycling in the region and providing a relatively inexpensive family night of entertainment, all while helping the community. “We have 24 races on the program, making it attractive for out-of-town riders to participate,” he said.

“We have riders from Wagga, Wangaratta and possibly some from Echuca at this stage. “The motor-paced events are always fast and exciting and the way we’ve structured the heats there should be some close racing in the finals.” Three motor-paced keirin events will take place for under 17 men and women, under 17 women and elite men. “They should be quite fast and exciting to watch,” Washington explained. “Basically six to eight riders follow the motor bike which builds up speed and peels off with two laps remaining then it’s a flat-out sprint to the finish.”

Two feature events for juniors will be the Peter Benton Memorial handicap and The Full Cycle Junior Wheelrace over 1000 metres for under 15 and under 17s. The night will culminate with under 13 and under 15 scratch race championships. Entry to the Pearsal Street velodrome will be by gold-coin donation and food and drink available on site, with all proceeds going to the Flutterby Foundation The first race will get underway around 4.30pm so spectators are urged to arrive early, maybe bring a deck chair and enjoy a night of family fun.
