UNIQUE: Aussie Joe Bugner.
Aussie Joe guest at racing day By TREVOR JACKSON ALBURY racing fans will have the chance to go the distance with former international heavyweight boxing champion, Aussie Joe Bugner at this year’s season launch of the Albury Racing Club. The club will kick off its 2011-12 racing season on August 26 and club chief executive John Miller said the day promised to be entertaining for all in attendance. He said the club tried to vary entertainment for the launch each year rather than just having racing or AFL personalities. “We just try to break it up each year,” Mr Miller said. “We have a pretty good following for this lunch, we normally get around 300 people so it’s just someone a bit different, a bit left of centre. “He (Bugner) tells a pretty good story and there’s a bit of history there, going the distance with Ali is a pretty impressive story itself, so we just thought it would break up the race day a bit and provide some good entertainment.” Mr Miller said from the feedback he’d received Bugner was a very entertaining speaker and he believed he hadn’t previously attended a similar function in Albury so those attending would be treated to something a little special. Tickets for the lunch are $120 and available in tables of 10 or smaller numbers on a shared basis.

SCAM ALERT
Don’t fall for phone calls about computers By BLAIR THOMSON BORDER residents are being targeted by an international scam perpetrated by fraudsters claiming to be from “Microsoft Windows” and “Internet Explorer”. The scammers say they need to gain remote access to the computers of people they call to repair non-existent problems at a cost of up to several hundred dollars. Director of Leading Edge Computers Albury, Russell Parkin, said it appeared the Border was being specifically targeted at the moment. “We get quite a few that fall for it,” he said. “We’ve probably had about 40 or 50 people either enquire about it or bring computers into the store. “I actually had someone call up the store last Friday night which was an interesting conversation.” Trevor Graetz from Albury repair store BDC Computer Wyse said he has had about 35 people ask if the calls were genuine and many had brought their computers in to be repaired. THERE seems to be nothing con artists will not try to get us to part with our hard-earned cash. And it seems there are no end of gullible people who are prepared to believe their lines and agree to pay for goods and services they have no hope of receiving. At the moment on the Border we have fraudsters cold-calling homes telling them they are from major computer companies and asking to be allowed to connect to computers to fix problems their companies have identified. These follow other frauds where people have been told they have won holidays, have come into large inheritances, and a recent one where people are asked for their banking details so a carbon tax rebate can be paid to them. And there are plenty of computer owners who receive emails supposedly from financial institutions asking for confirmation of banking details and passwords. All are cons. None have a skerrick of credibility and all should be treated as nothing short of criminal. The simple rule is that if you receive a call from someone who wants your personal information, you can be sure you are heading for strife it you cooperate. So when you get a call from a person with a foreign accent (or even a good old Aussie voice) make if very clear you are not interested. Hang up and save yourself trouble.
with real people anyway,â€? he said. Microsoft never makes unsolicited calls and has a warning on its website for people to hang up on any cold-callers claiming to be from the company. Most people that NewsWeekly spoke to didn’t report the phone calls to police. Every local computer store spoken to said they had had enquiries about the scam and customers that had fallen victim to it. Mr Graetz said he first heard of the problem up to two years ago. “This has probably been going on for at least 18 months, maybe two years,â€? he said. “We’ve been targeted too. “The big thing is the scare factor ‌ that fear factor might get people. “The best thing people can do is simply hang up.â€? The Scamwatch website says callers also claim to be from Telstra and warns people to never give anyone remote access to their computer.

Village move first step in a new life
INTERSTING SALE: Colin Trevaskis at the front of his Union Road home with a fire truck he’s trying to sell. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON.
One careful owner, only driven to fires By BLAIR THOMSON PEOPLE passing Colin Trevaskis’s home in Lavington this week would have noticed an interesting vehicle on his front lawn. Mr Trevaskis is selling a fully-operational fire truck with 40,000km on the clock, and has had several people express an interest in the vehicle since he attached a for sale sign about two weeks ago. “There’s been a few people looking at it, a farmer wanting to use it to fight fires and others looking to use it as a service vehicle,” he told NewsWeekly. “There would be a few people that would have a fire truck here and there, but not too many. “When the fire season comes, there might be a bit more interest.” Mr Trevaskis said the 1986 Ford Trader diesel had been well looked after by the CFA, which sold off dozens of the vehicles at a recent auction in Melbourne. “It’s basically left with all the pumps and it’s all geared up for firefighting but it hasn’t got that extra equipment,” he said. “It doesn’t come with a hose but they’re easy enough to get a hold of. “The CFA look after them pretty well and take them out for a run every week or fortnight to test everything and as far as I know, it all still works.” The asking price is $8900.
By BLAIR THOMSON THE first residents at a new aged care development have settled into their new home. John and Margaret Robins recently moved into the first independent living villa built at Westmont Retirement Village in Baranduda, joining more than 100 residents in other accommodation at the site. Margaret said the couple’s new two bedroom villa brought them piece of mind. “It’s mainly for security as we age and our needs change,” she said. “We had to downsize from a three bedroom to a two bedroom home, and two living areas to one living area, and this more suits our needs now. “It wasn’t really tough making the decision to downsize; it was making the decision of what to get rid of that was tough.” The former Wren Court residents said they looked forward to their new neighbours moving in and to using the facilities at the village. “You’re supposed to be sociable when you live in this sort of environment and it’s nice to be sociable,” Margaret said. “A lot of thought has gone in to the development, especially the planning of the home. “It’s all here for you as you age; if you need assistance in any way they look after you.” More than 130 villas will be built at the site over the next five

A NEW Border rail group met for the first time this week. Rail Albury Wodonga, headed by semi-retired rail engineer Bob Vanselow, hopes to promote new rail initiatives such as the high speed rail study recently released by the Federal Government. The first part of a study
into high speed rail estimates the cost to create a service from Melbourne to Brisbane – with a station likely on the Border – at between $61 billion and $108 billion. Trains leaving Albury would reach Melbourne in about an hour, Sydney in two hours and Brisbane in five hours.

Crawf’s postcard from Albury
By BLAIR THOMSON FORMER AFL star Shane Crawford visited Albury last week to film a segment for television show Postcards. The former Hawthorn captain and Brownlow Medallist was joined by Thurgoona’s Amie Godde and Katrina Chambers from Wagga, who have found fame on popular reality show The Block. Crawford visited the sisters’ favourite local hangouts during the stay, taking in places including the Botanical Gardens, Zed Bar, Cafe Borellas and the war monument. “I’ve always had a strong connection with Albury because I grew up in Finley and we used to come here with my mum to do shopping,” he explained. “A lot of my childhood memories are from Albury.
“The people are always really friendly and it’s a mad Aussie Rules area which is the way we all like it, so it’s good to be back” Amie and Katrina, who’s parents live on the Border, finished filming for The Block two months ago and are anxiously awaiting the August 20 auction of the Richmond house they renovated. “The show’s gone through the roof,” Katrina said. “I don’t think we ever imagined the ratings would be like they are so we’re getting recognised everywhere we go. “We’re just riding the roller coaster and having some fun with it. “It’ll be over before we know it so we’re just going along with it.” Aime said both were
happy with their finished house. “All the houses are absolutely brilliant,” she said. “The amount of work we’ve done is just outstanding and we think our house is beautiful.” While Crawford said he didn’t watch the show as often as some viewers, he said people should support Amie and Katrina. “You get connected with the contestants whether it be the girls from the country or the other couples that you can relate to,” he said. “I encourage everyone in Albury and Wodonga to send someone down there with a lot of money and buy their house and win some money for the girls.” The Postcards segment will screen to Melbourne audiences on Sunday but won’t be shown on the Border.

By BLAIR THOMSON PUREBRED dogs outnumbered their human counterparts by a ratio of about three to one at the All Breeds Championship Dog Show over the weekend. Close to 3000 dogs and 1000 barkingmad owners attended the show at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre in Thurgoona, with judges considering the “construction” of the dogs entered into the competition. “The judges are looking at which dogs best fit the breed standards, which basically describes a number of aspects such as type, soundness and temperament of a certain breed,” Jan Seary of the Murray Valley Kennel Club said. “They’re looking for the dogs that best represent their breed. “People have come from all around Australia to be here.” The canines ranged from massive Great Danes through to dogs capable of squeezing into a small handbag. Kris Brown from Corowa said the annual event was one of the better dog shows in the country.

THERE will be special emphasis on cooking and enjoying great meals at the Border RV & Camping Expo at Wodonga & District Turf Club in August. While induction cooking remains an uncommon luxury even at home, EcoPot has taken it on the road with its new Ecoheat RV portable induction cooker. The perfect complement to EcoPot’s established thermal cooking range, the induction cooker is designed to save both time and power. Weighing just 1.5kg, Ecoheat boasts twice the cooking speed of conventional electricity or gas, and is designed to run on just 800 watts and draw only 3.5 amps. It is purpose built for the Australian RV market, to be used in conjunction with a 1 kva generator or an 85 watt solar panel and inverter. Induction cooking demonstrations, along with the full EcoPot range of equipment will be at the expo. The Happy Camper gourmet offering of pre-cooked meals ready to heat and eat at a moment’s notice are likely to create plenty of interest. Happy Camper owner Rachel Treasure has enjoyed an overwhelming response since taking her pre-packed meals to the travelling public last year, and will be giving free tastings at the expo.
Plastic, discarded fishing line mean that Border ...
Platypus remain at risk By TREVOR JACKSON PLATYPUS numbers in the Albury Wodonga region, while pleasing to the Australian Platypus Conservancy, could be improved upon with the assistance of those who frequent the waterways around the Border. While platypus were spotted at 86 per cent of the 22 sites surveyed, the numbers were 25 per cent lower than similar surveys conducted along Melbourne’s Yarra River. Despite the urban impact on the inner-city river the platypus seem to thrive in the less than ideal habitat yet seem to struggle here in the almost pristine Murray system. Conservancy biologist, Geoff Williams said that platypus regularly occur in some of the most heavily frequented public spaces in Albury, such as Noreuil Park and said urban impact could be having a detrimental effect on numbers of the plucky little mammal. He said litter and willow infestation were major concerns and noted the Norske Skog paper mill appeared to have no impact on the platypus habitat. “We’re fairly happy with the fact that platypus were found through quite a lot of the survey area, upstream of Albury Wodonga itself but also in the built up areas, so we were quite pleased with the distribution of platypus,” Mr Williams said. “But we were a bit surprised the numbers weren’t a bit higher; they were actually a bit on the disappointing side. “It shows that while the platypus are doing okay they could be doing better if conditions were improved slightly.”
HABITAT: Geoff Williams from the Australian Platypus Conservancy has been surveying platypus habitat in the Albury Wodonga region. Mr Williams said litter entanglement was one of the main concerns, with Melbourne seemingly heading the clean-up of waterways despite the Yarra’s bad reputation. “In Melbourne, when we first started doing surveys we found one in 10 of the platypus we encountered had litter around them,” he said.
“We don’t know the figure from the Albury area at this stage but we strongly suspect, based on what we’ve seen in terms of the amount of litter that’s coming down some of the storm water drains, that the litter entanglement problem is probably quite severe and causing some loss of platypus.
“The reality is that the inner-city areas in Melbourne have actually done a good job over the past 10 years or so in cleaning up their act … you get nowhere near as much litter there and the numbers of platypus entangled have gone down where I think we probably haven’t got that message through as well as we could in some of the regional areas.” Mr Williams said two of the main littering concerns were discarded plastic rings and fishing line. He said some of the problems faced by platypus when encountering such objects could be devastating. “There is big room for improvement for everybody involved in fishing activities for ensuring they pick up their fishing line,” he said. “One of the things we noticed in many many places where we’ve been checking the numbers is that there’s a lot of line around and that’s the sort of stuff, when it gets around platypus they find it very hard to get off. “We’ve had instances in the past where platypus have been sawn through by bits of nylon fishing line so we can’t emphasise enough there needs to be improvement in that area.” Other problems that could be affecting numbers in the region were the recent droughts and the illegal use of opera house yabby traps, something Mr Williams said were death traps to platypus. Overall Mr Williams said he hoped the community would take great pride and pleasure in the fact that platypus occupy the Murray throughout the Albury area.

Dick Smith to open field days Australian entrepreneur, businessman, adventurer and patriot Dick Smith will officially open this year’s Henty Machinery Field Days, on Tuesday, September 20, 2011. The three-day event runs from September 20 to 22 at the Henty Field Days site on the Cookardinia Road just outside Henty. Mr Smith is currently re-launching his Dick Smith Foods brand. He is ashamed of the fact that Australia is now a net importer of foods, so he is setting out on a fresh crusade
to try to reverse the statistics. Dick Smith himself is passionate about good Australian foods and believes that Australia grows and produces the most magnificent food in the world. “Why we would import food from overseas when we produce the best food in the world is just ridiculous to me,” he said “Not only does our magnificent Australian food taste better, it is also better for you and safer due to the much stricter food safety standards
we have here,” he said. Mr Smith believes people would be shocked if they saw where the imported food comes from that we then feed to our children. He says food practices and chemicals banned in Australia being deemed unsafe are used overseas, yet this food is then readily imported into Australia. “When you buy imported food products, you just don’t know how safe they are,” Mr Smith said. “That is why I will only use Aus-
tralian produced foods in my range of products, grown by Australian farmers and selected by me. “Most of us don’t buy the cheapest cars for our families because we want a vehicle which his better and safer. “The same should apply with the food we eat.” At this stage Mr Smith plans to fly himself to the field day site and says he accepted the invitation because he has always wanted to visit the Henty Field Days. Do you think the full moon has an effect on criminal behaviour?
Lunar loonies may not be fiction I AM often asked from a policing perspective whether or not the full moon influences the behaviour of people. Without any basis other than my own working experience I have to say yes, it does. I rationalise my perspective by stating the moon affects large bodies of water such as the tides; human bodies are made up of about 75 per cent water, so of course, the moon would have to influence us as well. Not a lot of logic in that, however, that’s my position. So, what happens on a full moon from a crime perspective?
Many of my colleagues would agree that working during a full moon would mean exposure to a range of more serious offences than usual such as violent assaults, most probably with the use of a weapon (knife or gun), more serious domestic violence matters, and matters involving more aggressive human behaviour. A quick search of the internet supports my theory, although most research undertaken focuses on whether there is an increase in crime at this time of the lunar cycle. My position is that the nature of the crime changes/intensifies.

A spike in crime rates on a full moon night is called a “lunar effect. It is how people correlate the behaviour of humans and animals with that of the various stages of the lunar cycle. A number of researchers of human behaviour who have conducted studies revealed astonishing re-
%$.(5 027256 We’ve got you covered
sults for full moon nights. In these studies, events like arson, manslaughter and kleptomania were seen to increase on full moon nights by a considerable margin (http://www.moon-eyes. com/do-crime-rates-spike-on-fullmoon-nights.html). Inspector Andy Parr, of Sussex Police, made the connection while analysing crime for the Brighton and Hove “night-time economy. Nine years ago a three-month psychological study of 1200 inmates at Armley jail in Leeds showed a rise in violent incident in the days either side of a full moon (Psychology and Crime News, http://
crimepsychblog.com/?p=1624). This doesn’t mean that we alter our police taskings according to full moon nights; it does heighten our sense of awareness in some police, which from an officer survival perspective is a good thing. My last review of our local crime over the past few months highlighted to me that locally our response to mental health related incidents increased significantly around full moon nights. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? Interested? Take note, the next full moon will occur on Sunday August, 14.

Volunteers for study sought Ms Robson said about 20 people are participating in the study. But many more are needed. “We’re in the recruiting process now,” she explained. “In the Albury area we probably need about another 30 people. “They must be over 65 and need to be living in the community, not aged care, and need to have had a fall in past 12 months or have a family member or friend that’s had a fall in past 12 months.” Focus groups and interviews have already commenced at CSU in Thurgoona. “We’re hopefully looking to release the findings next year,” Ms Robson said. “Most of the research that has been undertaken previously has focused on metropolitan areas so we’re trying to see if there are different risk factors for people that live in different communities
and therefore tailor appropriate community intervention to help those people.” The social and monetary costs of falls can be quite high, according to Ms Robson. “It costs the health department quite a lot of money, so it has an economical cost but it also has a social and emotional cost,” she said. “A lot of older people that live in the community, if they experience a fall and experience a significant injury, it may result in hospitalisation and could mean they have to move out of their home and into a residential aged care facility. “Hopefully we’ll get some participants who can eliminate some of the risk factors.” Ms Robson, who has a health profession background, said the research was part of a broader PhD project. Member for Albury, Greg Aplin says a simplified standard contract will be developed to ensure seniors considering retirement village life can more easily understand and compare contracts. Mr Aplin said the development of a standard contract for the retirement village industry will provide residents with greater clarity and deliver greater confidence in the industry. “An expert committee has been appointed by NSW Fair Trading to help develop a set of standard terms to be used in all retirement village contracts in NSW,” he said. “The committee members represent a broad cross-section of retirement village experience from residents, industry and the legal profession.” Mr Aplin said many of the retirement village contracts currently in use are too convoluted.

HELP WANTED: Kristy Robson needs people over 65 to help with a study into falls. Picture: blair thomson
Family home not for sale THE Productivity Commission on aged care will force more elderly people to sell the family home, according to the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association. Association policy co-ordinator Paul Versteege said the association saw the report and the reaction of the Gillard govovnment as a declaration of war on the family home. “It is a declaration of war on older Australians, their children and their grandchildren,” Mr Versteege said. “This report abandons aged care as a community service and replaces it with a user pays system funded by flogging the family home. “Whether, as an older Australian, you will need aged care and how much comes down to luck of the draw and it should not cost the family home to pay for it. “Older Australians should not allow the Gillard government to bully them into flogging the family home to pay for aged care. “The association is adamant that forcing people to sell, or borrow against, the home they have slaved to pay off over a lifetime destroys their control
over their lives and simply does not go together with the provision of quality care. “The Productivity Commission has failed to appreciate that, as people age, control over their lives is to a large extent defined by their accommodation and the emotional security and privacy it provides. “Making people sell or draw down on the equity in their house is basically
telling them: you are on the way out anyway, so hand it all over. “The Productivity Commission has sought to entrench the institutionalisation of older people needing care and has failed to recognise that home-based care schemes have the potential to keep 95 per cent of people who need care out of nursing homes, allowing people’s home equity to remain in their homes.
calling all seniors...

“Under the Productivity Commission’s proposals, anyone receiving aged care, currently about 650,000 people, will have to pay the full whack and for most people that will mean selling or borrowing against the family home.” The CPSA represents pensioners of all ages, superannuants and low-income retirees. Its branches and affliates represent 31,000 members.

By BLAIR THOMSON A BORDER researcher is seeking people over 65 for a study into the risk factors for falls. Kristy Robson from Charles Sturt University hopes to reduce the impact falls have on those injured and the broader community. According to Ms Robson, the study is critical. “It’s a really interesting research area because falls are obviously a major problem with older people,” she said. “Between 30 and 60 per cent of older people in the community will have a fall each year and of those, five to 10 per cent will sustain a serious injury. “It’s important we identify the risk factors in the community to target interventions that can reduce the risk and cost of falls to the health service and population at large.”

Indigo Wines - quality by osmosis? winelovers with
paul muntz
S
everal weeks ago, my interest in Beechworth wines was reignited at a wine clinic run as part of the Beechworth Harvest Festival. I wrote about the exciting prospects for this emerging wine area, with many pockets of wines of breathtaking quality coming onto the national “radar. So, when I received a kind invitation from Indigo Wines of Beechworth to have lunch and to look at their range, I thought it was a great chance to have a microscopic look at an individual vineyard from the area.
Indigo’s history
Indigo’s Beechworth location
was the culmination of an Australia-wide search for a quality site that had good prospects of producing outstanding grapes, but was still in both a beautiful location and close proximity to capital cities and transport hubs. Iain Riggs (of Brokenwood fame) was the “explorer for the investment group, and was in little doubt that he had hit the jackpot when he came across a farming property smack bang next to Giaconda just outside of Beechworth, then a young vineyard but one with already a BIG reputation among wine lovers. Now terroir can be a fickle thing – soils, drainage and aspect of a vineyard can change within a metre or so, and so there was no guarantee that plonking a vineyard next to Giaconda would in itself be successful, but hell, it was worth a try, wasn’t it?
Is it osmosis?
It’s early days yet, but I have a
sense that the quality of Giaconda has (by osmosis or prevailing winds) cross-infected Indigo Vineyards with its quality. The vines are young, and the clones suitable to the area may still not quite be perfect, but I reckon Indigo is on the right track. At our lunch, we saw an interesting range of wine styles. And like any vineyard, quality varied across the range – not all are going to be “winners.
The range?
I am not a big fan of pinot grigio, but Indigo’s version was certainly easy drinking. Maybe a bit too much residual sugar for the purists, but I think most punters out there would find it slides down quite nicely. Their chardonnay and pinot noir showed great promise – both were nicely structured and, despite the youth of the vines, were already showing some complexity and defi-
nite “Burgundian structure. The highlight of the day was a 2006 “Bordeaux blend (cabernet/ merlot/petit verdot) which had lovely balance and was drinking nicely for its age. I think the jury is out as to whether this wine will go on, but who cares – it was lovely on the day!
And the vineyard?
The Indigo investors have thrown a lot of money at this venture. Impressive winery facilities, expensive vineyard infrastructure, and a commitment to quality wine production that doesn’t come cheap. Putting money into a wine venture is always risky, and not one for early returns. But I reckon if I was in the Indigo syndicate, I would be feeling slightly smug about my investment. The location seems right, and there are real signs of quality emerging from the range of wines. And who knows? If the wind
keeps whistling down the hill from the Giaconda Vineyard, it can only bring goodness, can’t it?
Tip for the week
Take a Sunday drive to Beechworth, enjoy the Indigo range and pick your favourites, and then head for McClafferty’s @ The Plough Inn (just south of the vineyard in Tarrawingee). This venue has slipped under my foodie radar, but it is a lovely rural pub serving above average “gourmet pub dishes, with a very comprehensive list of local wines available.

I
have been walking our dogs up on the hill for over 20 years now and I cannot remember it ever having looked so beautiful, nor feeling so very damp underfoot. Dust from the days of drought has given way to huge puddles and mud. There is colour everywhere – purple swathes running down the sides of gullies, with the Happy Wanderer (Hardenbergia violacae) in full bloom and cascading down slopes – and swathes of yellow where the various varieties of wattle are flowering. We don’t often see the two sickle-leafed wattles in the domestic situation – the Hickory or Lightwood wattle (Acacia implexa) and the Varnish wattle (Acacia verniciflua), which is much smaller than the Hickory and flowers a lot earlier. The yellows and reds of the various members of the pea family (Fabacae) means there is colour down to soil-level, as few of these shrubs grow over 2m. The Small-leafed Bush Pea has tiny, grayish leaves growing very closely together, whereas the Handsome Flat-Pea has larger green leaves. So does the Hop Bitter Pea, but all three carry the distinctive yellow and red flat flowers in large sprays. So many of the plants up there are suitable subjects for our domestic gardens, like the bushy climber, Hardenbergia violacae with its masses of purple flowers, and the pretty pink-flowering Indigofera australis. They grow naturally here and will tolerate all local climatic conditions. The white milkmaids and Early Nancys, the chocolate and yellow bulbine-lilies and other lilies, as well as the native bluebells, will all soon be flowering in response to the wonderful wet growing season we are experiencing. A friend who loves the little native ground orchids says the greenhoods have finished already, but the different sun orchids and the tiger orchid, plus others, will soon be blooming. So put on your walking shoes and spend some time roaming our beautiful Nail Can Hill.

ROLES: Actor Lucas Stibbard changes roles at the blink of an eye.
One man show story of love BOY girl wall has to be seen to be believed. A cast of 25 characters is performed by only one man, plus a stick of chalk, a sock puppet and an overhead projector! Nominated for an award for best actor Lucas Stibbard is at his all-time best as he switches from characters in the blink of an eye to tell the complex story of love,
architecture, magpies and astronomy. This is a story of Thomas and Alethea, neighbors in a West End apartment block, trying desperately to keep their lives from falling apart. “It’s a story about the wall that stands between them, which has decided they belong together,” Stibbard said. Contemporary, unique
and exquisite, this production by the Escapists produces adventurous high- quality performances that celebrate imagination, theatricality and the joy of play. “This is a story about every day life and the infinite cosmos” Stibbard said. Perfect pitch had Sony spellbound By BLAIR THOMSON STRAALEN McCallum is experiencing success in the music world that defies his young age. The Gold Coast teenager last year became the youngest person to sign with music giant Sony Music Australia, at just 12 years of age. His first big break came when he performed to 53,000 people before a State of Origin match at Suncorp Stadium last June. “Luckily one of those 53,000 people was Denis Handlin, the head of Sony,” the singer explained. “So I then went in front of all the big executives and they just really enjoyed my singing. “I’m still the youngest person that they’ve ever signed.” Based on the Gold Coast, Straalen’s voice has been praised for its perfect pitch and angelic sound. “I’ve sung all of my life, but my singing really took off when I started training with Vanetta Fields who’s quite a legendary vocal coach,” he said. “She’s worked with people like the Rolling Stones and Barbara Streisand. “At first my dad tried to get me in with her but she said she didn’t take little boys and hung up on him, but he called back and eventually she took me on after she heard my voice.” His debut album, A Little Faith, features songs the young singer hopes will inspire listeners. “I hand picked all the songs off my album and they’re all songs that have a lot of meaning,” he said. “They’re not just any songs, they’ve all got to have a special meaning and a real feel to them. “Arms of an Angel, Hallelujah, How Great Thou Art … they’re all such beautiful songs.” Straalen is currently on tour across the nation with Irish singer Mary Duff. The performers will come to the Commercial Club on Saturday night. “It’s such a great experience,” he said of touring. “I’ve got my own 30 minute show before she comes on, just singing some great songs and speaking inbetween them. “I never thought I’d be doing something like this. “It’s absolutely great.” After the tour finishes later this month, the young singer will return to the studio to record his next album and then hit the road again. Despite all the time spent away from the All Saints School, Straalen still manages to captain the high school soccer team and does online education to keep up with his school work. While he envisages a long career in music, he isn’t looking too far ahead. “I just love singing great songs, that’s my future,” he said. “This is my first tour and I’m seeing a fair bit of Australia. “I’d like to one day tour overseas but I’m just doing my thing here first.”

BOXOFFICE MOVIE: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (M) DURATION: 110 minutes By BLAIR THOMSON RISE of the Planet of the Apes has so much potential, but ultimately fails to deliver. The film avoids the previous Planet of the Ape films and begins a new story from scratch, focusing on James Franco as scientist Will Rodman who is working on a cure for Alzheimer’s at a heartless, moneydriven research corporation. His pet project, a genetically engineered retrovirus aimed at curing the disease is tested on a number of imprisoned apes (who look brilliant thanks to some immaculate CGI work). The initial results of the experimental cure are good and the company wants to test the product on humans, but the apes begin to show dramatic side effects including human-like intelligence and high levels of anger. When one ape escape and runs wild, the project is canned and the primates destroyed.
But one newborn is saved. Rodman smuggles the chimp named Caesar to his home and raises him like a son, and his hyperintelligence soon emerges. But the city eventually catches up with Caesar and forces him into a shelter run by sadistic handlers with other abused primates. Viewers know the inmates will eventually escape and run wild, taking their anger out on the human population, but the film drags at a snail’s pace to that uprising. Did the creators really need to spend three-quarters of the movie showing the apes being imprisoned and brutalised to explain why they hate humans? The producers have clearly created a film that suits younger audiences with the vast majority of violence happening off screen and when it does erupt, it’s usually an ape on the end of a bullet or electric shock which can be quite an uneasy sight. Whoever works on the sequel to this movie should keep the stunning graphics, but give greater attention to the plot and characters.

Presentation so important
The first thing you need to do when you decide to sell your home is to find the right real estate agent. Once selected, they will discuss with you the benefits of different sales methods, the best way to advertise your property, and perhaps improvements to maximise your selling price. A well presented home says “welcome”. It doesn’t have to be a show place but it should appear as a comfortable home in which to live. Remember, it will be one of many on the market at any time, so you need to present your home in such a way as to get the best price within a set time. Experience shows that vendors who make an extra effort with presentation usually achieve a quicker sale and, sometimes, a higher price. In the current market, when homes are on the market for a longer period of time, this is particularly important. Whether you live in a detached house or unit, first impressions do count. To start with, check the overall view of the property from the street: the yard or complex, fences, driveway, windows, doors, location and presentation of rubbish bins, roof and walls. Have all minor repairs done. Such things as sticking doors and windows, loose door-knobs, faulty plumbing and peeling paint may affect your sale.

Make sure gates open easily and the street number is clear and clean. Arrange outdoor furniture attractively to present an image of leisure. Tidy the flower pots and ensure plants are healthy and watered. Trim shrubs, mow lawns and trim borders, including the footpath. Clean out sheds. Toys and garden tools should be stored. Clear the gutters, clean windows, screens, doors and awnings. Spread gravel on unsealed driveways and lay pine bark on unsightly surfaces. Sweep driveways and patios. If you have a pool make sure it is sparkling clean and take the dog for a walk during inspections.
With energy prices on the rise building developers have come under more scrutiny. Alatalo Bros uses building suppliers that embrace sustanabilty and conservation. Features include LED Lighting, solar gas boosted hot water service, solid bamboo floating timber flooring, ceiling and wall insulation, AAA rated plumbing suppliers, and a orientation of living areas to make for a cleaner home and help you save money on utility bills. And it all starts at the very beginning, the planning stage. The Alatalo Bros design team will work with you to maximise the benefits of all design elements, including location, orientation, material, water source and fittings.

Charmer has every convenience COSY, charming and inviting are three words that aptly describe this federation/ cottage style Wodonga property. Set in the well established Greenhill Estate this three bedroom home oozes appeal from the front verandah to the rear paved entertaining area and pergola. A tiled entry leads to a formal lounge room with bay window and master bedroom with large en-suite and walk-in robe. A formal dining area sits off from the expansive kitchen with electric cooking and dishwasher. The open, spacious living area pro-
vides charming views across the rear yard and well established gardens. The remaining two bedrooms have built in robes and are serviced by a large bathroom with separate toilet. Storage space is at a premium with a deep linen press and large laundry with its own extensive cupboards. Large windows throughout provide a light airy feel to the home and a wall furnace keeps the cold away while ducted cooling provides summer comfort. The free standing double garage is at the front of the property.

Fully ducted gas in floor heating and fully ducted air conditioning plus split sys-
tem keep the temperature at a comfortable level all year round. There is a large double garage with twin remote entry. A FREE designer kitchen upgrade is on the menu at leading builder Dennis Family Homes throughout August and September. Certain to whet the appetite of home buyers, the offer applies to purchases of all new home designs during the two-month period. “You don’t have to be a cordon bleu chef to appreciate the benefit of having a gourmet kitchen in your new home,” says Dennis Family Homes general manager, Richard Uden. “Courtesy of our free upgrade offer, everyone can become a connoisseur, with all new homes being equipped with a showpiece designer kitchen at no additional cost. “Our customers will take pride in enjoying a kitchen with a range of extra features which add to its practicality and prestige,” he adds. The ingredients of the upgrade will vary according to whether the chosen home belongs to the Generations Series or Aspirations Series. Upgraded features for homes within the Generations Series include high quality freestanding oven, dishwasher, microwave with trim-kit surround, coffee machine, built-in
wine rack, glass splashback and concealed rangehood. The gourmet kitchen also includes additional pot drawers and overhead cupboards with feature doors, along with stone benchtops and feature island bench. For Aspirations Series homes, the free upgrade comprises the inclusion of a high quality freestanding oven, dishwasher, microwave with trim-fit surround, canopy rangehood, glass splashback, stone benchtop, additional pot drawers and overhead cupboards with bulkhead. Mr Uden says the immense level of interest generated by popular cooking themed television shows such as MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules had made culinary matters a greater talking point in Australian households. “For our free upgrade offer, we’ve called upon our own expert home building and design know-how to create a kitchen that will be the envy of your friends and neighbours in the years to come,” he said. More information is available from all Dennis Family Homes Display Centres, online at www.dennisfamily.com.au or by phoning 1800 DENNIS.
Councils need to re-assess their attitude to development charges: chief GOVERNMENTS and local councils must reduce headworks costs to address housing affordability and kick start sorely-needed development across Australia, according to the chief executive of First National Real Estate, Ray Ellis.
“The financial crisis has had a big impact on the real estate sector, both restricting development funding and amplifying the effect of infrastructure charges,” Mr Ellis said. “Where once local councils’
headworks charges paid mostly for water and sewerage, they now include a host of other charges, including costs for roads and in some cases recreational and community facilities, electricity charges, footpath networks and more.”
Are you a First Home Buyer in Victoria and thinking about building your first home?
In NSW, Victoria and Western Australia, headworks charges vary between $58,000 and $404,000, but on the Gold Coast a development was charged $2.5 million. The need for change was the greatest in regional areas.
“Regional areas are in desperate need of growth and, if the bureaucrats and policy makers really want to attract people to these areas, these headworks costs defy logic as they stand in the way of development,” he said.
Simply the best choice of land

Woodman memorial real test for riders
SUPPORT: Rhys Hensel and Sam Hargreave from Thurgoona Football and Netball Club with the one off playing jumpers that will be auctioned after the weekend’s game.
Doggies to help family
THURGOONA Football and Netball Club is rallying behind one of its favourite families in a time of need. Braedon Hensel is currently undergoing treatment for cancer in Melbourne and the club has decided to don a new playing strip and raise some funds to assist the family. Club president Tony Way said the one-off jumpers, designed in house and paid for in full by generous sponsors would be sold to the players or auctioned off after the senior’s game with 100 per cent of the money raised going to the Hensel family. “Young Braedon has been pretty crook and has required his mum to be with him in Melbourne all the time,” Mr Way said. “They’ve had a long association with our club, Braedon has played for us, Rhys plays footy and coaches thirds footy, Carla, his sister, plays netball and the family has been around the club a while so we just thought we’d like to do something and raise a bit of money for them on the weekend to help them out.” Being the last home game for Thurgoona this season Mr Way said they were expecting a large crowd anyway and he hoped more people from the local community would come along and have a look and help to raise around $4-5000. “There’ll be a couple of other raffles and fundraisers during the day,” he said. “There’s 50 jumpers at 80 bucks each so there’s four grand straight up. We might get $500 out of the raffle and a bit more out of a couple of other things so definitely four to five thousand would be our target for the day.” Mr Way said the club was urging all those in the community to head out to Thurgoona on Saturday to support this worthy cause for a much loved Border family. “I’d just say to anyone who’s not doing anything on Saturday to come along,” he said. “They’re a family that have just given a lot to their community so it’s a good opportunity to give a little bit back.”
THE John Woodman Memorial Wagga to Albury cycling race will take place this Sunday with a strong field expected to compete for the coveted trophy. The field will be made up of last year’s winner, Shepparton’s Trent Stevenson, well known Border cyclist now riding for Drapac Porsche, Rhys Pollock as well as the usual spattering of local and national competitors including the Albury Wodonga Cycling Club Development squad of Shane Way, Kade Brown, Declan Gregory and Brendan Washington. At just 18 years of age Gregory will be competing for the first time in the event while Washington will be notching up his 10th start. Pollock will be participating after competing in Europe with his team and could well start as favourite to take this year’s honours. Washington has only failed to finish the event once but is yet to taste victory, last year crossing the line as first local rider after breaking a rim towards the end of the race at Jindera and limping home. He said it was a race many became obsessed with and the 135km undulating course could make or break a rider. “It’s the biggest local event and the one with the most history attached as far as cycle racing on the Border goes,” Washington said.
COMPETITIVE: Border riders, Declan Gregory and Rhys Pollock are both expecting a tough race on Sunday in the John Woodman cycling race. Picture: TREVOR JACKSON. “It’s difficult because you rely on how the race pans out … you could be the strongest guy but if you don’t see the front because of the handicap you don’t have a chance. “A lot of things can affect that, the weather, the size of the bunch, guys can puncture or crash, there’s a lot of things that are out of your control which is why handicap racing is so ap-
Youngsters show class THE Border has yet again been well represented in junior cycling with some top performances from Lavington Panthers Cycling Club and Albury Wodonga Cycling Club members at the Border Zone Final at Wangaratta. The meet showed their road skills are up with the best on the 700m road criterium course. In the male under 13 event held over eight laps Patrick North managed a first place finish. The under 13 girls’ novice event, also over eight laps saw a club clean sweep with Ruth Little taking top honours from Bridgit Casey with Fionnabhair Casey third. The male under 15 event over 12 laps saw Stephen Damm finish fifth while in the novice event Nahum Little took out second place. The under 15 girl’s 12 lap event again saw a clean sweep with Kirstie Deacon taking the honours from Sophia Drury and Rebecca Thomson. Some good results came in the male under 17 event over 15 laps with Liam McAlister a strong second, Declan Dempster coming home in fourth, Harrie Weatherall taking fifth and Ryan Allen finishing sixth. In the male under 19 event over 15 laps Zac Drury was second.
pealing.” After missing last year’s race due to HSC commitments Gregory said he was keen to give it his all and take the challenge up to his higher profile competitors. “Depending on how the race pans out I’d just like to finish … there’ll be a good chance for a good result,” he said. “I’ve only been racing for two years and you look
at the likes of Rhys and his Drapac team mates coming down, they’ve all just got back from stints in Europe, it is a bit daunting but, bring it on! “We’re all fit and ready to go, we’ve worked on the team aspect of it this year and I’d say that’s probably got us across the line and got us some of the better results. “I think that alone
Gearing up for Kentucky trip AROUND 50 parents and children from the Border are preparing for the Kentucky Bound basketball tour to the US organised by local basketball identity, Allen McCowan. With the departure date of November 4 fast approaching the two teams of boys and girls had their first training session last week in readiness for the trip. And if any of the players were expecting a relaxed training session they were probably surprised, McCowan saying the sessions he had planned would be up tempo and quite intensive. “It won’t be relaxed,” McCowan said. “The whole point of it is to give them different skill bases, to pick up a bit of intensity unlike what we normally do at other training sessions just so they can get a different variety. “It’s about teaching them a few other things and giving them a chance to work on a few different things.” McCowan said he expected
some tough competition when the teams arrived in the States but he was focused more on the experience than winning games but added that he wanted the teams to be prepared when they take the court. “I want them to be reasonably competitive, that’s the nature of sport,” he said. “You step on the court and you want to be as best prepared as you can not only for over there but over here, for their basketball for the future. “If they can take these skills and work on them they’ll be better prepared for here as well.” McCowan said while there was a real buzz around the whole group at the moment there was also a degree of excitement from the hosts Stateside. “The schools over there are really excited too,” he said. “The kids get to spend a day in school and have lunch with the kids that they’re going to play against. “I’m just very happy with the response.”
will give us a bit more of a chance.” And while Pollock has only competed in the event a handful of times he set the fastest time in the race two years ago but is also yet to taste victory. “Last year I didn’t get to do it because of the Tour of Geelong,” he said. The race is due to finish around 1pm at the Lavington Hall.

It’s so tough at the top IT’S interesting to see the attitude of so called heavyweights of the AFL this week slam lesser funded clubs. Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire have basically stated that handouts from the AFL do little for the competition and it was interesting to read the reply by their North Melbourne counterpart, James Brayshaw. Brayshaw simply pointed to the facts, that neither club would have been in the position to make such statements 10 years ago, and it’s hard to argue his point. We have to allow struggling clubs to say afloat for the good of the competition. Football clubs run in cycles and those now doing it tough will become the premiers in the not too distant future, given the opportunity. Both Kennett and McGuire have a record of being outspoken so my question is, are they really what the AFL needs right now?

Pigeons set to upset Tigers LAVINGTON Panthers stole a twopoint victory at Bunton Park on Saturday with a kick on the death knell to take the points 70-68 from a dejected North Albury. Lavington seemingly controlled the game for the first half but conditions made it tough to find the big sticks and they took only a marginal 6.6-4.4 lead to the long break. The Hoppers kicked into gear in the third term to close the gap to just one point. This set up a blockbuster final term with neither team giving an inch and when it all looked in the bag for the Hoppers, with one final roll of the dice it was over. Those who braved the elements were certainly not disappointed with the display and despite the loss the Hoppers have edged closer to that elusive fifth spot after the Raiders were comprehensively defeated by a rampaging Tigers outfit. The Raiders held a slender lead at the first break but from there it was all one way traffic, the Tigers providing an impressive 10-goal second quarter to bury the Raiders. The final 164-71 score won’t help the boys from Wodonga and they need at least one more strong win to stay ahead of the Hoppers. The Raiders face Lavington this week and would have to expect an uphill battle while the Hoppers take on Corowa-Rutherglen in an almost certain victory to ensure the finals race is on in earnest. In other games Corowa-Rutherglen were lucky to escape with a two point win over Wodonga, Wangaratta managed a strong 65-38 win over the Rovers while
should have no trouble accounting for the Saints. And there’ll be plenty of interest in the match of the round, Tigers v Pigeons on Sunday. It’s been a big year for the Tigers and while they’ve only stumbled a couple of times it could well be taking its toll with several players feeling the strain physically. It’d be a brave punter to tip against the reigning premiers this week but I’m sticking my neck out for a last ditch effort and tipping the Pigeons to take the match by a two goal margin.

PRESSURE: Lavington applied plenty of pressure to North Albury in their two point win at Bunton Park on Saturday. Picture: trevor jackson
Myrtleford suffered a big 113-38 loss at the hands of Yarrawonga. This week throws up some interesting games but none more interesting than the Roos v Hoppers and the Raiders v Panthers. I think the Hoppers will take their match comfortably but the Raiders are going to rue their poor
showing against the Tigers last week when they fail to get within five goals of the Panthers. This will spell the end of the season for the Raiders with the following round providing another tough hit-out against the Pigeons. The Raiders’ percentage advantage over the Hoppers has disap-
peared and this week won’t provide any respite. Wodonga have a chance this week to notch up another win and with Myrtleford coming up a week later will be looking to finish the season on a brighter note. I think they can take the points from the Rovers while Wangaratta
