Baby boom In the last week, 21 babies were born at Wodonga Hospital in 48 hours, typical of the spike in births for the region. Turn to page 8 for the full story.
Spirits alight By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Chiltern Christmas light-up was a sparkling success, despite patchy weather. Buskers, local singers, a free sausage sizzle and plenty of community spirit helped raise money for the Chiltern Emergency Services. Indigo Shire Mayor Barbara Murdoch led the countdown, with the switching on of the lights going off without a hitch. “The light-up was wonderful, we were worried to start with but by the time the lights went on it was fine,” organiser Andrea Excell said. Mrs Excell and her husband Glenn have been dressing their home with festive flair for 18 years in Melbourne, but brought the show
to their new home in Chiltern for 2012. Santas, Mrs Claus, reindeer, elves, a five-foot tall singing polar bear, and an electric train were all equally entertaining to children and parents alike, who looked upon the scene with wide eyes. “Considering the weather, we were very happy with that because that’s not our main fund-raiser,” Mrs Excell said. “People came from Albury and further, everyone said how fantastic it was, we had about 300 people come through to see the lights on the night.” Another fund-raiser for the Chiltern Emergency Services will be held on 15 December, a family party night.
Ambo ‘penny-pinching’ By TREVOR JACKSON NEW roster systems are failing NSW Ambulance paramedics and the general public alike, according to the NSW Health Services Union. The union says “penny-pinching” by the State Government is putting lives at risk, and the same scenario could unfold in the Border region. According to the union, recent changes to the roster system on the NSW South Coast have seen station
closures and delayed responses. And while no changes to the Albury roster are current, local Liberal member of parliament MP Greg Aplin says Corowa and Holbrook are scheduled for roster changes. “Clearly in the new year they’ll be looking at those areas,” union secretary Gerard Hayes told NewsWeekly. “They’re looking at the rostering right across the state. Changing rosters and spreading things unbelievably thin
is not going to deliver the outcomes they want.” But Mr Hayes stopped short of lumping the blame on the ambulance service, saying the State Government had a lot to answer for. “The blame for this is directly on the government,” he said. “The ambulance service is doing what they can with what they have, but they have a responsibility to manage the service - that means speak to the
government and tell them they need the funding that is required.” Mr Aplin said while Corowa and Holbrook were due to be reviewed, 24hour stations such as Albury were not in the firing line. He said a non-compliance policy by the union, trying to work up concerns in the media and the general public was behind the problems. “The whole reason it’s (roster changes) been undertaken is to reduce
fatigue due to the long rosters that have been in place,” Mr Aplin said. “It’s been through the Industrial Relations Commission which were all in favour of the reforms.” Mr Aplin noted the problem with paramedic fatigue had been identified as far back as 2008 and said the changes were brought about by the IRC to reduce the fatigue levels and overtime expenditure. “They have been working fairly long hours and the whole idea was to reduce the long shifts which can be up to 11 hours and down to eight hours, he said. “They’ll work shorter shifts over an increased number of days and they’ll have two to four days off in a row compared to four to six under the old system. One other aspect of course was that some of them were earning $115,000 worth of overtime in a year. Mr Hayes said under the new system paramedics could be working eight days on, six of those on call, effectively meaning the possibility of a 24-hour working day. “They’re doing that because they don’t have enough staff, he said. “As I understand it now, the attrition rate within the ambulance service is not

AUSTRALIANS have had enough of politics. Whether at the state or federal level, the art of politics seems to be taking a dark road. We never seem to get a straight answer on virtually any issue that affects us as taxpayers. In our front page story this week we see the unions battling it out with the NSW Government over changes to the ambulance service roster system, both appearing to have different points of view and possibly different agendas. And the issue is not minor. In fact it could well have life-threatening consequences - depending on who you believe. The problem is, you just don’t know who to believe any more. And then in a more feel-good story we hear of a young Border girl heading off to Canberra to discuss the need for further funding into type one diabetes. Upon her return, Sophie, who relies on an insulin pump to keep her health in the balance, was wide-eyed and seemed to enjoy the experience. And she noted, at just 12-years-of-age, how good it was to hear Tony Abbott pledge $35m to support the cause. But then Sophie’s mother Katie chipped in, saying the Gillard Government wasn’t looking to match that offer. More political football it would appear. And of course each party blames the other for the “current economic situation making any financial cuts or tax increases necessary due to the mess left by the previous government. But the most disturbing thing was to hear that Sophie, a young, impressionable Australian, actually sat through a session of parliamentary question time. It’s enough for adults to endure such torment, but imagine our youngest, most influential citizens having to sit through such a rabble? Sporting personalities are often referred to as role models, but in reality, those who run our country have more influence, should be viewed as true role models, and should therefore be held more accountable for their actions. It’s about time our politicians came clean, and began to properly govern the country for those it’s supposed to support - the average taxpaying Australian.

meeting growth. “We have a situation where less people are trying to deliver outcomes for a growing community. “If you are going to have less resources, it’s quite clear there’s going to be poor patient outcomes. Mr Hayes suggested concerned residents should contact Mr Aplin to air their grievances. “It’s a problem we’ll work through, Mr Aplin said. “I’d be interested if it was individuals, but if it’s coming from unions, you’ve got to look at it as being confrontational rather than contributing to a better outcome. “I’d prefer to contribute to a better outcome, so we’ll deal with it if someone raises it with me locally - but they haven’t.

Secret agents Butt out of Poole Street on stage By KRYSTEN MANUEL
POOLE STREET residents across from the Albury TAFE have had enough of students leaving rubbish on their lawn, with claims the mess is not only untidy, but is making their animals sick. “It’s in public areas and on people’s median strips, resident Ellen O’Connell said. “There’s full paper bags of dim sims, full packs of wedges and chips and takeaway food. “One time it looked like someone had emptied their whole car contents. There was three packs of empty cigarettes, cigarette butts ... and the dogs are eating them and getting sick. Ms O’Connell said other residents along the strip are outraged, but all pick up the rubbish themselves anyway.
By KRYSTEN MANUEL AT 80 years old, Val Edmunds has been teaching speech and drama locally for a phenomenal 60 years and still has the passion of a 20-year-old. “It’s in my blood, she said. “I love poetry and I love the drama side of things, even though it gets very frustrating sometimes when children don’t learn their lines! Her latest production, the end of year children’s theatre production is in its 33rd year and Mrs Edmunds promises it will be a hoot. “The junior play is unusual, she said. “It’s about a kingdom called Hygenia and they’re very hygienic- they gargle every hour, they’ve
got a lady called Aunty Septic and instead of a Prime Minister there’s a Grime Minister. “It’s quite funny. “The senior play is very funny. “It’s a skit on secret agents and so instead of James Bond, we have James Blonde, he’s 009.5, and Maxwell Sharp and his offsider is 98.6. “They’re trying to solve the mystery of the silver thumb. The children’s theatre musical comedy is only showing once at Wodonga Senior Secondary College at 2pm, 9 December. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for kids/ concession. Call 6021 7561 for bookings.

Director for business, arts and service industry Brian Miller said there were extra bins put in place around the edge of the grounds for the smokers to place their butts, and said the TAFE would look into more bins and communication with staff and students. “We do what we can to maintain a good relationship with the neighbours, he said. With Christmas holidays coming up, Poole Street residents can at least look forward to a quieter and cleaner street until the suggested changes are made. “When they had two weeks off we couldn’t believe how beautiful the street was, Ms O’Connell said.

TESTING… The Kings men testing the gigantic King Kong puppet. WHAT takes a cast of 49, a crew of 76 and an enormous gorilla? This is no Punch and Judy show, kids. This is King Kong. With opening night on 15 June next year, the many hands that bring this epic music theatre event to life will be working around the clock from early next year, including local Rutherglen talent Nathan Jones. “It’s the biggest production I’ve been in, by far,” he told NewsWeekly. “I’m really excited for this one, I can’t wait to move to Melbourne. “I’m one of the people who control King Kong - this big 1.1 tonne puppet. “There’s acrobatic elements and some new aerial skills as well, which will be fun to learn.”
Mr Jones has been training with the Fruit Fly Circus for the past seven years and is now an instructor. He is proud to be one of the select few chosen to star in King Kong, a production that is already years in the making. King Kong has shied away from bigname casting, and put its faith in a highly skilled, diverse cast. “I am ferociously proud of our 100 per cent made-in-Australia cast,” said King Kong director Daniel Kramer. “Audiences should brace themselves, not only does our cast dance and sing and act, but they fly, flip, and fall through the air, looking darn gorgeous in the process. “Never before have I had the privilege of working with such a group of world-class entertainers.”
The cast for King Kong began forming in February 2011. “I am thrilled that we can finally reveal the all-Australian company that will join our principal cast, international creative and music team to bring Kong to life,” said Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Global Creatures. The Kings men (Jones’ part) are aerialists who will be purpose-trained by puppetry director Peter Wilson and aerial/circus director Gavin Robins to manipulate the six-metre tall silverback Kong on stage, complementing the animatronic wizardry for which Global Creatures is renowned. For bookings, call 1300 111 011 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.au Ticket prices range from $60 to $129.

Killer cure is Sophie’s cause
Brush up on life skills By TREVOR JACKSON
WODONGA residents who have previously undergone CPR training are being urged to take up a one-hour refresher course being offered by St John Ambulance. The course is designed to suit those due for a 12-month refresher, cutting down the time from the previous three-hour course. Emergency services trainer Jenny McIntosh said it was imperative people continued to refresh their skills. “I’ve been teaching for a long time and you find people come in within three years, even 12 months, and their skills have diminished, she said. “Most people wouldn’t carry out CPR in a 12-month period so it’s very important you can come in and have a practice with the manikin. It’s probably the closest way you can practice, making sure you’re being effective with your compression. “We recommend, for an adult, you would be compressing more than five centimetres - that’s a fair amount on somebody’s chest. With a background in emergency services, Ms McIntosh said she’d called upon her CPR skills four times, and during such refresher courses was told of others having used their skills as well.
By TREVOR JACKSON
SKILLS‌ Jenny McIntosh is urging Wodonga residents to register and refresh their CPR skills. “You often hear of people who have stopped at road accidents to render assistance,â€? she said. “I think it’s one of those things - you may never use the skills, but if you do you can be confident to use them.â€? Refresher courses will held in Wodonga at a venue dependant on numbers or on-site where practical. For further information call St John on 1300 360 455. ABOVE: HAPPY‌ Katie Coulter said she was pleased to take daughter Sophie to Canberra to meet with the Prime Minister and other politicians.

SOPHIE Coulter has just returned from a visit to Parliament House after meeting with politicians to discuss funding for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. And at just 12 years of age she’s knows the importance of the journey better than most. Sophie was diagnosed with type one diabetes at just 11 years of age and has had an estimated 6570 finger pricks since. She uses an insulin pump to regulate her diabetes. “It was really exciting, Sophie said of the trip. “We not only got to speak to the politicians about finding a cure, we also met quite a few people with diabetes from all over Australia. Sophie said she’d been to Parliament House twice before but never for such an important reason. “It was a bit daunting with all the politicians and all the people, she said. “I met Sussan Ley again and we also met Julia Gillard and had a photo with her. I didn’t get to speak to her personally but I got acknowledged. Sophie’s mum Katie said it was an opportunity not to be missed and she was more than happy to take her daughter to Canberra. “This is a disease that’s going to stay with her forever, unless they do find a cure, so she has to own it, Katie said. “She has to be prepared to speak to people about it because there’s lots of misconceptions. People often don’t talk about it because they’re ashamed of it and I don’t think that should be the case. “It’s about spreading knowledge and telling people about it so they understand and so more and more people realise we need money to do research to find a cure. Sophie said one of the highlights for her was when Tony Abbott pledged $35m over a five-year period for research into the disease, something the government was yet to match.

Relax at the River WHEN was the last time you re-discovered Noreuil Park? Maybe it’s time to head down and enjoy the Riverdeck – the perfect spot to sit and relax and enjoy Albury’s most idyllic setting. The Riverdeck offers breakfast, lunch and great coffee, all on the deck, under the shade, overlooking the park and the Murray River. Owners Christa and Alex Smit say they feel it’s a privilege to operate the Riverdeck in such a beautiful location. They currently operate The Pass at Falls Creek, have travelled extensively and are more than happy to call Albury home. “We took on a business at Falls Creek, which is very coffee focused, and when the opportunity came up to lease the property here, we thought it would fit perfectly,” Alex said. Now in their second year of operation in the park, Alex said the business had already proved popular and they were looking to continually grow their brand. “This year we decided to put these large tables on the deck, put in some extra kitchen equipment so we can do fully-cooked breakfast and lunch, and functions for groups both on the deck and next door for people who use the Mitta Mitta canoe club meeting room”
he said. “We’re also looking to get a liquor license. We believe this is a phenomenal asset for Albury, for people to be able to come to this location and have a cup of coffee, a breakfast or a lunch, then potentially a bottle of wine and maybe share a tapas.” Another offering for this year is oldschool Frosty Boy ice creams, soon to be served from a tricycle throughout the park. “We should have our little ice cream tricycle early in the new year,” Alex said. “We’ll be serving ice creams and cold drinks here, down to Oddies Creek and through the park setting. It should be a really fun thing.” But as with many similar businesses, the coffee is often a major focus for clients – and the Riverdeck do it as good as any. “Our coffee is a blend we bring in from Melbourne,” Alex said. ON THE DECK... Alex and Christa Smit say there’s nothing better than relaxing on the deck under the trees at “We make thousands of coffees Noreuil Park. A MASSIVE spike in births at the Wodonga Hospital had nurses run off their feet, with 21 births in a 48-hour period over the last week. “For July, August, September and October this year, we haven’t had any numbers under 145 babies for the month, so there has been a phenomenal increase and we’re all starting to feel it a bit,” Wodonga Hospital’s deputy director of nursing maternity services, Julie Wright said. Ms Wright said they usually expect three or four births a day, or 130 a month. With the numbers they have been seeing, staff are expecting to smash the 2008 record of births, 1625, as they are already sitting on 1601 and still have a whole month to go. “We keep thinking it will drop off, but it doesn’t appear to be abating,” Ms Wright said.
Wodonga Hospital is one of the largest regional maternity areas in Australia, covering seven local government areas, and would seem to be a reasonable indicator of populational growth. “When we talked to the department of health, they said there’s no anticipated increase in populational growth,” Ms Wright said. “Some of that would be based on birth rate, but what we have seen here in the last five months is a 14.5 per cent increase in births in a five-month period compared to the same time last year. “Even the year before, which was a slightly busier year, it would still be 10 or 12 per cent up. “So whether it’s just one of those left field things, and whether it’s going to be very different next year, I couldn’t tell you, but it certainly was not something we had predicted or could see happening.”

Drink up when the heat is on WITH the hot weather now upon us it’s important to keep hydrated when out in the sun or exercising. Over 25 people were treated by Ambulance Service of NSW for heat-related symptoms over the past weekend, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion. The majority of those patients were males. It’s important to know how to be prepared to the summer heat to avoid heatrelated injuries. Exercising or playing sport in hot or humid conditions can lead to dehydration, heat illness and sometimes the more serious consequence of heat stroke.
The fi fire’s re s miles away.
Sports physician and Sports Medicine Australia spokesman Dr David Bolzonello said while people need to exercise regularly to stay healthy, they should take certain precautions if exercising in a hot or humid environments. “Heat illness is a serious matter that can result in the life-threatening condition of heat stroke, if left untreated, he said. “Knowing how to prepare for heat illness, what causes it and what to look out for will help people avoid it. The symptoms of heat illness can include light-headedness, nausea, headache, confusion, not sweating and aggressive or irrational behaviour.
Some important things to remember are to stay hydrated by drinking water before, during and after exercise, schedule activity to avoid the hottest part of the day, take rest breaks in the shade if possible, wear light coloured, lightweight and loose fitting clothing that allows easy evaporation of sweat from the skin and wear sunglasses, SPF 30-plus sunscreen and a hat. People suspected of suffering from heat illness can recover rapidly with assistance by laying down in a cool place, removing excess clothing, wetting skin or using ice packs, and drinking cool water. However if symptoms do not improve, seek medical assistance.

By TREVOR JACKSON YACKANDANDAH’S Charles Sluga gallery has opened to great support from the community. The current exhibition The Streets of London has been well received, and has been supported by work from the town’s primary school children. Mr Sluga said all the artworks had been inspired by streets on the Monopoly board and he was pleased with the response from the public. “It’s been fantastic,” he said. “At the opening I had people lining up, I opened the doors and they all flooded in - it was standing room only.”
EXHIBITION… A portrait of Charles Sluga among several of his works.
Or alternatively, via email to: board.appointments@health.vic.gov.au
Having been a professional artist for around 25 years, Mr Sluga said he’d always wanted a gallery in the main street of Yackandandah, and when the opportunity arose to lease the Athenaeum Building, he took the plunge. “The front area, where the primary school children have their work at the moment, is normally my studio,” he explained. “People can come in and see me working, there’ll be tubes of paint, paper and canvasses everywhere. Then you walk through into the back room which is the gallery section. “That’s where all of the paintings are hanging, and also where I’ll run work-
shops throughout the year.” Mr Sluga said he felt the new gallery added to the already creative atmosphere in Yackandandah. “I think it gives people another reason to come to Yackandandah, and with the numbers I’m getting through, I think it’s actually working,” he said. “There is another gallery here in the main street - when you have one, people might come to town, when you have two it almost starts to create a theme and people have more of a variety to look at, so it makes Yackandandah more of a destination.” You can catch the current exhibition at the gallery until 30 December.

Beating oral cancer RATES of oral cancer are on the increase. The Australian Dental Association is fighting to increase awareness, the risk factors that contribute to it and lifestyle changes that can help reduce a person’s risk of getting oral cancer. Every day, at least three Australians are being diagnosed with oral cancer and survival rates remain low, despite advances in treatment. This can be attributed to late detection. Recognising the risk factors and signs of oral cancer is vital to better prognosis and outcomes. It’s important to know what you should be looking for in your mouth. Ulcers or lumps in the mouth which do not heal within two weeks should be treated with suspicion. Smoking, alcohol, poor diet, sun exposure and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) all contribute to a person’s risk. The ADA has created fact sheets and a website to provide information on what to look for in your mouth, as well as the risk factors that can contribute to oral cancer. They are encouraging people to have a conversation with their dentist, family and friends about the health of their mouth and teeth. Checking for signs of oral cancer is a part of the regular check-up procedure carried out by your dentist, so it’s vital to have regular visits. Risk factors for oral cancer include: - Smoking - more than 80% of oral cancers in Australia occur in people who smoke. - Alcohol - heavy drinking, defined as more than four standard drinks on a single occasion, increases your risk of mouth cancers. - Extended exposure of lips to sun. - Poor diet - consuming a diet low in or with no vegetables.
Cheaper check-ups for children By KRYSTEN MANUEL YOUR child will soon be sporting a big, white toothy smile with the recent Dental Benefits Amendment Bill 2012 having been passed, providing $2.7 billion to assist the estimated 3.4 million children who will be eligible under the scheme. The Dental Benefits Amendment Bill 2012 submitted by the Minister for Health, Tanya Plibersek, passed both houses of the Australian Parliament on Monday 26 November. The Bill seeks to introduce the means tested Child Dental Benefits Schedule which will replace the current Medicare Teen Dental Plan (MTDP) from 1 January 2014. Unlike the old MTDP, the scheme will assist in basic essential dental treatment such as check-ups, x-rays, fillings and extractions, excluding crowns, bridges, root canal and orthodontic items. Although this entitlement aims to encourage dental health, parents wont be booking unwilling children in at their local dentist too regularly, as the total benefit entitlement will be capped at $1,000 per child over a two-year period. Eligibility for these benefits remain the same as the current MTDP, covering children from families who receive family tax benefit A.

Celebrating 35 Years Present SIGNS By Knight is one of Australia’s most well-known and respected sign companies, priding themselves on delivering quality signage and styles. A team of 12 with over 75 combined years of diverse experience in the industry offer speciality advice courtesy of their qualified graphic designer and sales team, from concept ideas through to manufacturing and installation. “The industry itself has evolved a lot itself to now,” owner Tracey Knight said. “A lot of it’s fabrication and computer generated. It’s still hands on but not so many brush strokes. “We install the signs and fabricate all the big stuff in-house.” Signs by Knight also have the only neon bending plant in the region.
“It’s like blowing glass,” owner Tim Knight said. “There’s use for it and neon will always have its place.” “We also do LED lighting, light box, pylon or moving signs and digital displays - we do a broad spectrum. We do digital printing and small signs right up to huge banners.” With Tim and Tracey at the helm of Signs By Knight, they aim to continue a family tradition of commitment to delivering quality signs and meeting their customers time frame and expectations with the professional and friendly service the business is known for today. And rest assured, no job is too big, too small or too difficult. “There’s nothing we don’t do,” said Tim.

Celebrating 35 Years Future Past
SIGNS By Knight was established in 1977 by self-taught signwriters Gary and Letetia Knight. In April 2008, Gary and Letetia’s son Tim and his wife Tracey purchased the business. “Gary was a police officer in Wangaratta at the time and found an interest in signs,” Tracey said. “He was creative with his hands, and was always interested in signwriting. “He liked to watch this guy signwriting and eventually started helping him out when he wasn’t working. “They relocated to Wodonga and not long after that, got to the point where he decided to start the business from home and leave the force. “He got his first shop and then his first apprentice.”
LOOKING BACK… The new showroom is surrounded with old photos depicting the history of Signs By Knight. Letetia was an artist, contributing a great amount of creativity to the business. “It was just him and mum and they built it up,” Tim said. “They started from pretty much nothing.” When Tim and Tracey purchased the business, many positive ideas and changes were made, and are still being made today. One of these changes stem from Tracey’s valuable professional experience, and aims to create a new efficiency and structure within Signs By Knight. “We’re a family business but my history is corporate, I used to be a territory manager for Elgas,” she said. “So we’re blending the family business with the corporate side of things, it’s working well.”
SPECIALISTS… Signs By Knight will design, create and install on time, and on budget. IN a bid to make customer experience simpler, more efficient and enjoyable, and to enhance satisfaction, Signs By Knight is going through some major renovations - inside and out. Starting with a new-look showroom and reception at the entrance to the building, this area is where customers flesh out ideas with a dedicated sales member, gain a wider knowledge of the possibilities for their signage with the new touchscreen TV, and see their project throughout its production. In keeping with the updated showroom, vehicle signage will also be updated. A new website is in the making to
assist customers with any question they may have about the business, to make contact with the sales team, or to see the potential of your signage needs. The website is full screen and adaptable to smart phones so you can look them up wherever you are, whenever you need. As far as the signwriting industry goes, Signs By Knight is always one step ahead, whether it be machine, building or web upgrades, always looking to the future. “It’s always changing,” Tim said. “When I first started it was green screen computers, there was no such thing as windows.
“It was all hands on, done by sketches and paper. “We were the first ones in this area to get the vinyl letter cutting machine. We’ve always invested in the best of the new. “More electronic stuff will be down the track. Electronic signs will become cheaper, it will all be computerised. “Signs won’t be painted, they’ll be electronic, which is good too - it has its place. We have a soft spot for traditional methods.” Always on the cusp of innovation, customers can rely on Signs By Knight to be one step ahead.

The gigantic sign was a challenge at every turn for the Signs by Knight team, whose installation process even included solar lighting so the sign could be seen at night with floodlights. “It was a challenge, and it was big, Mr Knight said. “Two 44-foot containers are not easy to move so we had to use Dunnes Twin City Cranes to move them around when we wanted to work on them. “It also had to be kept under wraps, so we had to cover it up until the launch of the park. On top of this, the team were working to a deadline. “It was a tight deadline - six weeks from getting the go-ahead to having it installed, Mr Knight said.

ONE of the bigger projects you may recognise from Signs By Knight, is the Nexus sign, though it’s more of an installation- a massive, looming, impressive installation. Located at the Nexus Industrial Park (adjacent to the Hume Freeway) the sign cannot be missed. Two bright red 44-foot containers stand notched together to form an X, balancing perfectly on their edges, defying laws of gravity to the naked eye. “Ideas went back and forward for about six months before the park was completed,â€? director and owner of Signs by Knight, Tim Knight said. “It was a combined idea to use containers, make an X and notch it together. “We purchased two identical containers from Rural Container Supplies in Albury. “We started cutting them up and made them stand on their edge. We took the car on road trips to Melbourne and as far North as Tamworth, as well as a lot of small towns in a two and a half hour radius of Albury Wodonga and everyone we drove past took a second look at the car. We will definitely be doing the same thing again next year and will definitely be using your services again.” - Nic Conway, Kinross Woolshed Hotel

FINE-TUNING… The Murray Conservatorium Choir hard at work under the direction of Beth Ylvisaker.
Christmas bells By KRYSTEN MANUEL
THE Murray Conservatorium Choirs will soon present their annual Christmas concert - ‘Christmas Bells.’ The concert features music that is about, inspired by, or sounds like bells. Of course, this includes familiar melodies like Ding Dong, Merrily on High, but is also comprised of lesserknown and new works from some of our talented local composers. “We have an emphasis on Australian music each year and this year we have music composed by a few locals, as well as some work from Benjamin Brittan and Henry Purcell,” president of the Murray Conservatorium, Lyn Potter said. Director of music Beth Ylvisaker came up with the theme for this year and is excited by the results of all the hard work the choirs have put in. “We have a choir that ranges from 16 years
old up to retirees singing music in four parts,” she said. “An achievement for the choir is that we’re starting to sing unaccompanied, which is quite a skill. “In planning programs I try and find a theme that ties everything together, I think it makes it more interesting for a listener and it’s interesting for us.” Local string players led by David Pietsch will join with the choir, with performances from The ConMen, who are celebrating a successful first year of singing together. Sarah Winnel, the 2012 Bill Kell scholarship holder, will also be highlighted, singing the well-loved Gesu Bambino. Performances are on Saturday 8 December at 7.30pm, St Matthews Church, Albury; and Sunday 9 December at 2.30pm, St John’s Church, Wodonga. Tickets: $20 adult, $15 concession, under 18 years free.

Outdoor cinema By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Cube Wodonga is opening up the big screen to the Border community, with six films on schedule for December. Wodonga Councillor Lisa Mahood encouraged residents to come along and enjoy the relaxed, community atmosphere. “Wodonga Council is excited to be able to provide the outdoor cinema free of charge,” she said. “The Cube Wodonga ‘Big Screen’ program will feature movies during the warmer months, with the focus being on family-friendly films and much-loved classics.” The outdoor cinema will be showing the 1983 classic, Bush Christmas, at 6pm this Saturday. Bush Christmas is the much loved Australian story of an outback family and a Christmas ad-
venture they will never forget. The film, set in early 1950’s outback Queensland, tells the story of a family’s struggle to keep their homestead, and of two bumbling thieves who steal their winning racehorse. Residents are asked to bring their own chair or rug to the screenings, with food and drink available for purchase from Rubix Catering’s cafe. The films will be accompanied by fun activities in The Cube Wodonga courtyard that are being planned to coincide with the film nights in December and January. Major Australian sporting events will also be shown on the big screen during this time. To see what’s on for January, visit www.thecubewodonga.com. au/whats_on

Carols to shine WODONGA’S 37th Carols by Candlelight is a family tradition for many locals across the Border. It doesn’t quite feel like Christmas until you’ve been to the carols. With the exception of the performers, the traditional program hardly changes from year to year, and always places a strong emphasis on the development of local performers, both on and off the stage. The program will be broadcast live from 7.30pm on 1494 2AY, hosted by Sandra Moon. With plenty of space, Willow Park is a great place for a picnic, with barbecue and other food providers available from 6pm onwards. Pre-Carols entertainment will be pro-

tal problems, questions over sexuality and child abuse, all bound together by the characters’ lame attempts at getting over their myriad of problems by dancing and going for car rides over a bridge. Painful. Every. Step. Of. The.Way. The plot centres around a quiet, unsure guy (Charlie) who has a lot of issues, especially with death. He becomes friends with a group of people that think they’re such an individualised minority that they’re unique. I guess no-one told them the majority of people think they’re a minority, which makes them about as special as

All pain, no perks MOVIE: The perks of being a wallflower DURATION: 103 minutes of torture WOW. What a pretentious load of crap. The saddest thing about this movie is that it has actually been getting good reviews. Why? I couldn’t tell you. It couldn’t be the highly unattractive cast. It couldn’t have been the characters that were developed in such a way that would make even the most self-important teenager cringe. It certainly wasn’t the story-line- a week old casserole of done-to-death teen issues including drugs, sex, men-

a grolly on a football field. Together, they learn about themselves and each other through the highs and lows of being a teenager ... blah blah blah. The one and only good thing in this film was a phrase that came about when Charlie asks his teacher why good people go out with people that don’t treat them right. The teacher answered, “we accept the love we think we deserve.” While this is a very valid, interesting and true point that I’m sure gives everyone something to think about, it still didn’t save the movie from being a total embarrassment.

Visit Holbrook
Holbrook is sub-stantial THERE’S more to Holbrook than just passing highway traffic. And while the township may seem like the last frontier to be bypassed by the Hume Freeway, due in 2013, there will still be plenty of reasons for travellers to pull off the freeway, with easy access at either end of town, and stop over for an hour or even longer. Holbrook is strategically located between Sydney and Melbourne, primarily a service centre for the surrounding region and visitors alike. The major focal point has always been the HMAS Otway, centrally located, boasting a playground, ample parking, full amenities, cafe and relevant visitor information. But visitors can also enjoy antique and craft shops, museums and a miniature railway. The main street has been treated to a facelift with new footpaths, street furniture and tree plantings, with further works to be completed once the bypass is complete. Community groups such as Rotary, Probus, Lions, View, OMNI, Pensioners, Chamber of Commerce, Laurel Club, RSL and sporting clubs assist in running many annual events. These include the Town Garage Sale, Art Show, Planes Trains and Submarine Festival, Commander Holbrook Races, New Year’s Eve B&S Ball, Triathlon, Flower Show and Agricultural Show. If you’re looking for a family day-trip from the Border, Holbrook is certainly worth discovering.
FUN… The miniature train is just one of the many fun family activities to be found in Holbrook.

Visit Holbrook
How it all began THE township of Holbrook is steeped in history, from its historic architecture to its title. Originally named Friday Mount and Camden Forest by Hume and Hovell, it was later known as Therry’s or Billabong after the Reverend John Therry in 1836. It would later become Ten Mile Creek and the name Germanton was officially gazetted in 1876. In 1914 the name was again changed, this time in honour of Lieutenant Norman Holbrook. In December of that year Lieutenant Holbrook guided a British ’B’ class submarine below a minefield in the Dardanelles to torpedo a Turkish battleship. He was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross. Holbrook became Australia’s only town to be named after a VC winner and would eventually be recognised as the ’Submarine Town’. In 1995 the Royal Australian Navy gifted the fin of HMAS Otway to Holbrook and eventually the outer skin to the water line of the submarine was purchased and installed in the Submarine Precinct. The Submarine Precinct has be-

come a well-known stop-over on the Hume Highway, allowing travellers to experience the size and grandeur of a submarine, unique in its rural setting. The National Museum of Australian Pottery, the only museum dedicated to 19th and early 20th century Australian pottery, is also well worth a visit. On display are close to 1,500 pieces of domestic pottery from over 120 Australian pottery companies established between European settlement and the end of World War I. Also on display are over 100 original photographs, showing the interior and exterior of many potteries, exhibition displays and portraits of the potters along with catalogues, price lists and old advertisements. And there’s much more to see in Holbrook, including many historic buildings that have survived from a bygone era. A quick visit to the information centre will provide all the information visitors need to experience a slice of Australian history, right on our doorstep.
PASSING TIME… Holbrook was once a town attracting much of the highway traffic looking for fuel and food.

A hidden gem By TREVOR JACKSON
STYLISH‌ This fourbedroom hidden gem has it all.
STUNNING... The spacious kitchen would surely be the envy the most fastidious chef.
RELAXING‌ The expasnive outdoor living area provides scope for relaxed afternoon dining.
DRIVING down Wodonga’s Hereford Street you barely notice the entrance to Jones Court - apart from two pines standing like sentinels on the corner. It resembles more of a private driveway than a cul-de-sac, and that’s where the charm begins. A four-bedroom, three living area family home takes pride of place and the end of the street, boasting features more often seen on a rural parcel of land, but all within easy reach of everything central Wodonga has to offer. A short walk or bike ride finds a number of schools, the hospital, shopping centres or the CBD. The driveway provides access to the oversized double garage under the main roof and the triple garage with loft towards the rear of the 2000m2 block. Stepping into the home through the leadlight entry immediately provides a feeling of grandeur. Stunning tiles greet the new owners while timber Dado panelling stretches throughout the home. Tasteful French doors open to the formal lounge room, where picture rails provide easy hanging opportunities around all walls. A further set of French doors lead to the spacious rumpus room, complete with bar, timber window seats and lights designed to enhance the family pool table. The expansive main living areas provide ample space for family dining and relaxing. A cathedral ceiling graces the kitchen/dining area, with large windows creating light and space. Timber features throughout the home, and the kitchen is a perfect example. From the extensive cupboard space to the large built-in hutch, the warmth and style provid-

ed by the timber panelling, cupboards, and even the walk-in pantry door is evident. The master bedroom is well designed at the rear of the home to take in the views across the back yard, spilling over the fence through Willow Park. A large, tasteful ensuite includes a walk-in robe and luxurious corner spa, with stunning tiles adding the final touch. The main bathroom is itself stunning, with separate powder room providing convenience, servicing the remaining three double bedrooms. Again timber is featured in both bathrooms and powder room, with large vanities keeping with the overall theme. Outdoor entertaining is well catered for with an expansive undercover area providing the perfect alfresco experience. The yard is of generous proportions with space for a pool, a vege garden, or whatever landscape design you may have in mind. The triple brick garage is another major feature of the home. Here you’ll find the perfect space for the weekend hobbyist, whether you’re into restoring old cars or motorcycles, maybe tinkering with bits and pieces for the home, or just an avid gardener wanting a safe haven for the beloved tools. But there’s also an upstairs loft, suggesting a teenager’s retreat, or a complete man-shed, with bathroom facilities on the ground floor and scope for a kitchenette, fridge or any other necessities. Privacy is assured with Willow Park to the rear of the property and space between the one current neighbour. If you’re looking for your own little piece of country-style paradise with all the convenience of city living, look no further - this hidden gem has it all.

SOCIAL… The main building at Murray Gardens includes the bar, dining room and socialising hub.
By TREVOR JACKSON MURRAY Gardens is more than just another retirement village. It’s a place to go to live, not a place to go to die. That’s the impression you get when talking to manager Chiquita Walsh. “It’s a vibrant and eccentric blend of retirees who all give something to the community,” she explained. “There are opportunities here to join groups, you can be as socially active, or as reclusive as you choose to be. We have a social calendar that has something in it every day.” Ms Walsh said the services offered
at the village rivalled those anywhere, with the residents taking ownership of many areas of the daily activities. She said the bar area was the nucleus of the complex, not for drinking, but for gathering and socialising. “The residents can come in for a chat, a coffee, or play pool,” she said. “We have great coffee and a qualified chef. We try to offer food more like that in a restaurant than a retirement village.” And it’s the bar that is typical of of the running of the village. A committee of residents was formed to run the bar, offering fair prices and raising funds for local
NUCLEUS… The bar, run by the residents, is the nucleus of Murray Gardens.
charity groups. Bob Wyatt is in charge of the bar and says they like to ensure they put something back into the community, including the village itself. “We took over the running of the bar in 2007 and we set our prices then,” Mr Wyatt said. “Luckily we haven’t had a price rise since. The little bit of profit we do make we give back to the residents either in drinks or we donate to different charities around town. In the last 12 months or so we’ve been donating to the carers’ accommodation.” Now 74 years old, and after 11 years in the village Mr Wyatt explained
why it appealed to him. “I decided when I retired we were going to see Australia,” he said. “I bought a caravan and we travelled around, but every time we came home we had to work for two months to catch up on the gardens. “I decided to downsize and a friend of mine suggested Murray Gardens - I didn’t think I was ready for a retirement village. “We came and had a look and bought a place. “It’s like one big family - everyone looks after each other - I have no qualms about it.”
Ms Walsh said aging was often associated with three plagues - loneliness, boredom and helplessness. But she said those plagues weren’t evident at Murray Gardens. “That’s because of the social activities we have,” she said. “It’s a community that looks out for each other, and I think for single people who don’t want to live out in the community, there is a sense of security here because you’re part of that community. “This is the place to come if you’re retired but still want to be active and involved.”

THE third annual Flutterby Foundation track cycling carnival has been hailed another success by organiser Brendan Washington. He said spectators enjoyed a night of fast and furious action in the real spirit of a track carnival at the Lavington velodrome. But more importantly, around $2000 was raised on the night through gold coin donations and the sale of food and drink for the Flutterby Foundation. “It was probably the most money we’ve raised on the night,” Washington said. “I know the guys will be really happy. We’ll meet with the hospital to make the donation and hopefully we’ll be able to see the benefits of what’s been done pretty soon.” Washington said one of the aims of the carnival was to bring the excitement of track cycling back to the public, and he said it seemed to achieve that goal. “I think it was the most successful carnival so far as far as racing goes,” he said. “We had some guys from Wagga and Wangaratta compete and it was good to see so many women involved. We had two women finish in the top five in the wheel race, which is good to see that’s the way it should be.” Young Wangaratta riders were rewarded in the junior Peter Benton Memorial race and local riders were strong across all races, with the motorpace keirin events a highlight of the evening. “Keirin racing is always exciting because it’s short, sharp and fast,” Washington said. “I think it was faster than your average club night. With some of these races we have perpetual trophies and shields and a bit of competition is starting to develop again. “Guys like racing for a trophy that means something.”

The final event of the evening, a 30-lap scratch race in memory of Washington’s father, Bill, was again a hotly contested, and an emotional one for the local riders. Washington made his own intentions clear early, breaking away from the main group, looking to take the win. However he was soon caught, but kicked again and the field were forced to chase him down a second time.

SUCCESS… Local riders Kirsty Deacon and Rebecca Thomson tasted success, finishing first and second in the North East under 17 championship race AT Lavington velodrome. The race was eventually won by an emotional Steve Kilpatrick, which Washington said was very satisfying. “I knew I probably wasn’t going to win, but I wasn’t going to come second or third easily,” Washington said. “I was always going to have a crack and I think the boys knew that. From a race point of view it would have been good to watch and it was good to see a mate win it.”

GRANDFATHER… The experience of Beau Sheridan is helping a young group of players keep the Wolves at the head of the pack.
ANOTHER emphatic performance by Wodonga Wolves men on the weekend has made the rest of the league stand up and take notice. While the 46-point demolition of Deniliquin was a far cry from the 93-point drubbing handed out last time to two teams met, it gives the Border team the ’yardstick’ status in the Country Basketball League. Coach Michael Hickey said he pleased with the performance of the team after a first round forfeit, winning all five subsequent games. And just like his Lady Wolves counterpart, Hickey has plans for the team - or more of a belief. He said the body-language from the team suggests they have the attitude to take them to a conference grand final again - and they seem determined not to let history repeat. “I know it hurt last year being beaten on the home court against Shepparton in the conference final,” Hickey said. “There are a few of the players who are still hurting over that, and they want it more than ever. “The way they’re training and going about it as a group tells me they want that conference
final - we don’t talk anything less.” But to get the team to that point again will be no walk in the park. Big names have departed from last year’s line-up and Hickey has been given all but a blank canvas to work with. But he says his young charges are up to the challenge. “We call Beau Sheridan the Grandfather, the old man,” Hickey joked. “It’s basically a young group of 20-21 yearolds. There are four or five young blokes who have come out of the under-18s and we’re still playing experienced teams like Seymour, Shep and Wang who have had solid teams for the last four or five years.” Hickey said it’s teamwork and a desire to win that bodes well for the future of the club. “They’re a good bunch of mates which is something you need to have,” he said. “This group is prepared to share the ball they don’t care if it’s a 17-year-old rookie looking at a three point shot - if he’s wide open they encourage him to shoot it. “To look at that and know this group is going to be here in four or five years time and be the senior group, and instil that into the next junior group coming through, the program looks pretty good.”
Cox hat-trick but no cigar in Cup quest By GARRY HOWE
WODONGA trainer Brian Cox did not achieve his quest for an 11th Wodonga Gold Cup on Sunday but certainly left a mark on the Cup meeting. Cox was denied in the $80,000 feature event by Flemington visitor Zabisco, in the care of 2000 Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Michael Moroney, who benefitted from a great ride by champion jockey Luke Nolen to salute. The three Cox runners - Minnie Downs, This Cat’s Magic and Murdoch’s Joy - finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. But the stable had the perfect lead-in to the cup, winning three successive races with Toolangi, Full Hand and Sumakaray. Promising three-year-old filly Sumakaray provided the most exciting win of the day in the $30,000 Dot Dunstan Sprint (1200m). An impressive winner of her first two starts,
the daughter of Manner Hill was then sent to Flemington on Oaks Day where she suffered multiple lacerations to her hind legs when 12th behind Shamal Wind. Sent out the $1.50 favourite, apprentice John Kissick positioned Sumakaray fourth before angling her to the outside as the field approached the home turn. Travelling like the winner a long way from home, once Kissick asked the filly for an effort in the home straight she raced away from her rivals scoring by the best part of five lengths. Despite the effortless nature of the victory, it wasn’t all stress free for connections with Sumakaray throwing Kissick after the post and having to be reined in by the clerk of the course. Unharmed, Kissick said Cox had warned him about Sumakaray’s attitude but that she was a filly with a lot of ability. Riding honours on the day went to champion
jockey Luke Nolen, best known for his partnership with super sprinter Black Caviar. Nolen rode a treble, including the $80,000 feature race. He combined with Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody in the opening race to score with odds-on favourite Quick Snitzel ($1.90) to win the Boxing Day Beach Party Maiden Plate (1200m) and then gave local trainer Cox the first leg of a hometrack, Cup day treble when he partnered Toolangi to break his maiden at his fifth attempt in the fourth race on the program. Wodonda and District Turf Club chief executive Brad Thomas hailed the Cup meeting a great success. Champion trainer David Hayes was a guest of the club in the VIP marquee and saddled up Manila Jewel in the big race which, despite being backed in from 7-1 to 11-2 before the jump, finished eighth behind the Cox trio.

Local Sport Back on his feet
RECOVERY… Jesse Featonby was enjoying his recovery back in Albury, participating in a celebrity challenge at the Lavington velodrome.
By TREVOR JACKSON A NAVICULAR stress fracture earlier in the year put paid to Jesse Featonby’s international triathlon season, but hasn’t dampened his spirit. He’s been home in Albury recovering, and is now back running, with his sights set on a return to the sport in February. “I had the stress fracture in June and had to have an operation on my left foot in July,” Featonby said. “It’s taken until this week before I progressed to running and weight-bearing activities - it’s been a long four months and it’s good to be back into it and be making plans for next season.” The injury came when Featonby had been picked to compete with the Australian team for world cup competition, which he said was very frustrating. “I was training in Majorca, Spain for over a month, then we moved to France before my first race of the European season,” he said. “That’s where I got the injury. I did all the hard yards to make the team and the first race I was injured.” Featonby said the injury caused him to re-evaluate his whole career choice. “When the injury first happened I wanted to quit,” he said. “There’s so much hard work and you give up so much - I’m 24 and I could be working a full time
job and driving a new car. “But I’ve been all over the world, doing what I love doing, competing and training with my mates. “It was pretty frustrating but it’s all done now and I’ve finally recovered, so I’m moving forward and concentrating on the upcoming season.” Featonby said he feels good about his future and isn’t setting any major goals at this stage. He said having no expectations to perform has helped with his preparation. “Mentally it’s a good position to be in,” he said. “I won’t set any goals or timelines to reach peak form. It’ll give me a good opportunity without the pressure. I’m feeling really well and riding really strong. I’m showing progress with my running and have made the most of my time. “I’ll probably race until the end of March in Australia and then step back, go into another training block and head overseas again.” And while Featonby’s recovery is progressing well, he took time out to enjoy a night of track cycling at Lavington velodrome, participating in a celebrity challenge. His allotted bicycle for the race provided little chance of beating Clancy the Koala, but Featonby said it brought back fond memories. “That’s where I started,” he said. “My dad was a good cyclist and when I was about seven or eight, I started riding on the velodrome.”
