Time to say no! Domestic violence ‘a crime that must be stopped’
By BLAIR THOMSON GROUPS on both sides of the Border will today unite against domestic violence. White Ribbon Day aims to raise awareness of the issue with men urged not to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and children. The Albury Wodonga Community Network, which runs Betty’s Place, helped 173 women and 279
children affected by domestic violence in the 2010/11 financial year and had inquiries from many times that number. Police in the Albury Local Area Command respond to about five incidents of domestic violence each day on average. Chris Whitehead, acting program manager of the Albury Wodonga Community Network, said domestic violence had a huge
and lasting impact on women and their children. “The research shows that the health issues can be quite long term,” she said. “They often need counselling, it has a huge impact.” Ms Whitehead said more women were reporting incidents than in the past and more people were talking about it. “I think community awareness

is a really big thing, so things like White Ribbon Day are good to get the issues out there in the public’s mind. “But I think the stigma needs to be taken out of it. “Some people think it’s just a domestic and something between a husband and wife and between partners, but it’s assault. “Even though they’re partners, Continued page 8

DAY OUT: Organisers of Sunday’s Pets Day Out are hoping the event will be popular with animal lovers. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON. By BLAIR THOMSON PETS of all shapes and sizes will enjoy a day of fun activities at Hovell Tree Park on Sunday. Organisers of the first Pets Day Out hope between 500 and 1000 people attend the event with obedience training demonstrations, free microchipping and information from vets key attractions. While Albury Council events team leader Ros Walls is hoping for a fun-filled day, there’s also a serious message behind the event. “We want to increase community awareness and education about responsible pet ownership,” she said. “Certainly microchipping is a big part of that, making sure they have their shots and that sort of thing, but it’s also just general things like nutrition, exercise and health
checks. “It’s more than just a pet show.” Local funny-man Steve Bowen will chat to people throughout the day and take photos of pets with their owners. Members of the Albury Dog Rescue and local animal rangers will also attend. “Our rangers are really passionate about this event,” Ms Walls said. “They’re the ones out in the field, sometimes having to deal with poor examples of pet ownership and finding dogs that aren’t chipped. “We held an open day at the pound last year and we think people really want that knowledge.” All pets are welcome but dogs must be on leads and other animals appropriately caged or restrained. The event will run from 10am to 2pm

NEWSWEEKLY has been recognised at the Victorian Country Press newspaper awards. In the category for newspapers with a circulation over 10,000 we were judged to be the winner of the award for the best use of colour. This award is sponsored by Norske Skog. represents the enormous growth newspapers have made and its impact with readers. “The clean, classical approach to this publication was emphasised by the excellent choice for colour treatment for both editorial and advertising matter,” Mr Holloway said of NewsWeekly. “Each page was nicely balanced. Every publication presents differently – this one is among the best.

FOR too many years we have regarded domestic violence as something that stayed behind closed doors. Literally thousands of women (and children) have had to endure physical violence from bully-boy husbands who believed they had to right to treat their families as personal punching bags. Fortunately the more enlightened approach these days has led to domestic violence being seen for what it really is criminal behaviour that must not be tolerated. And yet there are men (and a few women) who don’t think this belief should apply to them. Our police officers - the men and women who put their lives on the line for us are still spending too much of their time dealing with these thugs and criminals. It has to stop. Domestic violence is a crime and has to be treated as such. Police called to such incidents have to treat the perpetrators as they would any other criminal. And our courts must do the same. There can be no reduction in penalties for someone found guilty because a sentence could impose financial hardship on a family. Rather, we must support the victims and help end the circle of violence.

Despite his duties as Julia Gillard’s partner, Tim Mathieson says ...
Every bloke needs a shed By BLAIR THOMSON WHEN he’s not travelling the world or mingling with leaders like Barack Obama, Australia’s “first bloke” Tim Mathieson loves nothing more than kicking back in his shed. The Prime Minister’s partner has his own sanctuary set up at The Lodge where he spends time doing “blokey” things. “It’s pretty good,” he told NewsWeekly. “I doesn’t have the sort of things I probably want out there like some old Triumphs and stuff like that, but there’s some old furniture in there I can do up. “I had one in Altona and now I’ve got a big one at The Lodge.” A relaxed Mr Mathieson visited Wodonga this week to promote men’s health, opening the new Baranduda Men’s Shed following a prostate cancer fund-raiser. He said Australia was finally starting to catch up to women in terms of promoting men’s health, with the shed movement providing places for males to talk about problems, socialise or work on projects. “The rapid growth of Men’s Sheds – we’re up to about 700 now – has been extraordinary,” he said. “I just like the camaraderie, having a cup of tea, having a chat to the guys, and just seeing what each shed is up to.
“Each shed is so different and it gives you a good example of how diverse they are all around Australia. “It’s a great umbrella group to bring a lot of different issues together, where men can talk about problems they’ve got at home or their health issues.” Mr Mathieson spoke about the sheds to the wives of some of the most powerful world leaders during the recent CHOGM meeting. “The women, if you could picture it, all dressed up in their fancy costumes, still didn’t quite know what to expect when we told them what a shed was, and what men do in the shed,” he said. “After the speeches the questions came rapid fire asking if they could take it back to Malaysia or wherever it was and if we could please talk to their men.” Mr Mathieson, who described Barack Obama as “a pretty cool dude” and a guy “that has Mr Charisma stamped all over him”, said he regularly fielded questions about his famous girlfriend. “They usually just ask if she’s the same type of person they see on TV or see in parliament, and she’s exactly what you see,” he said. “She’s a very humble person and very down to earth and says it exactly the way that it is.” The visit was Mr Mathieson’s second to the Border this year.

From page 5 it’s still assault.” Albury LAC domestic violence liaison officer Senior Constable Joanne Gallant said despite many cases being reported, some women were still reluctant to approach the police. “We average 148 domestic violence calls per month,” she said. “It’s quite a prevalent problem and it’s still quite an under reported issue. “The police are trying to say it’s a crime and we take it seriously.” Calls made to Albury police regard arguments through to serious assaults. “It’s very difficult for people to report it,” Sen Const Gallant said. “I think they say on average women are probably assaulted seven times before walking into a police station “They can obviously report it to police but if they’re not comfortable

hits at Cold Chisel concert By BLAIR THOMSON COLD Chisel were in powerful form during their gig at Gateway Lakes last Friday night. Close to 12,500 fans attended the event to hear the reformed rockers blast through close to two hours of hits. Opening with Standing on the Outside Looking In (which a small crowd of people without tickets were doing ), Jimmy Barnes and company had punters singing in full voice, dancing and cheering on the ageing rockers. The band was incredibly tight, led by a note-perfect Ian Moss on guitar. And Barnes’ guttural voice had lost none of its power of yesteryear, sounding fresher than ever. Deceased drummer Steve Prestwich was remembered through a touching video montage tribute and song dedication before When the War is Over, and Barnes declared the tour was being held in his honour. While newer songs failed to ignite the crowd, old favourites like Cheap Wine, Choir Girl and the iconic Khe Sahn received a passionate reception. Lesser known songs were also thrown in to please more diehard fans. Despite Barnes sharing a few jokes and trivia with the crowd, songs were punched out in quick succession with minimal fuss. Some (most notably Cheap Wine) had been slowed down to a more relaxed tempo, perhaps to allow the musicians some breathing space, but the tunes were faithfully brought back to life with perfect clarity. Tim Rogers from support act You Am I even joined the band for one song and thrashed his guitar about like he wanted to hurt it. Nobody could accuse the band of giving less than 100 per cent. And it’s almost certain that no-one in the crowd went home unsatisfied. A truly memorable gig.

Mental health ‘is being ignored’
By BLAIR THOMSON HEALTH services are failing those that are suicidal or have mental health problems, according to a visiting former police officer. Retired Chief Inspector Gary Raymond attended 200 suicide negotiations during his time with the NSW police force, talking many people down from bridges, buildings and cliffs. Some even became his good friends. Despite the prevalence of the problem – more people die by suicide than road trauma – there’s a reluctance to discuss suicide or properly fund prevention services, Mr Raymond said. “Hardly anyone’s suicide aware,” he told NewsWeekly. “When people stop breathing and their pulse stops, you do CPR ... even young nippers on Bondi Beach learn CPR, the staff at the Commercial Club are CPR trained. “But we’re right at the beginning of mental health community training. “It’s lagged behind the medical training. “We want to find people who are suicidal and get them to intervention, get them to help.” Mr Raymond, a chaplain who ran for parliament as a member of the Christian Democratic Party, said governments overlooked funding for suicide prevention and mental health in favour of more populist causes. “There’s no doubt at the mo-

PREVENTABLE: Governments need to better fund suicide prevention and mental health services, according to visiting former police officer Gary Raymond. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON. ment that medical services and road trauma services are funded far better than mental health services,” he said. “Suicide is a preventable death. “It should be talked about in the home like drugs and sex. “We tell our teens not to drive stupidly and not to take drugs, but we never say that if they’re feeling suicidal they should call us. “The bottom line is every depressed person today should be asked if they’re suicidal and if they say yes, get them some help or encourage them to get some help. “We definitely need emotional care built up to the level of physical
care but sadly, trauma and suicide is rarely a vote catcher.” Mr Raymond is on the Border talking to local groups and schools about suicide and bullying. “It’s like, if you don’t tell teenagers about sex, they’re not going to do it, or if you don’t tell them about drugs, lets keep it quiet, then they won’t have a go at it,” he said. “Suicide can’t be swept under the carpet in the hope that people are not going to suicide. “Talking about suicide doesn’t encourage it ... that’s a big myth. “Talking about suicide actually prevents it.”
By BLAIR THOMSON KURT Hickling will light up his family’s Chiltern home next Thursday with an estimated 350,000 Christmas lights to glow throughout the festive season. Kurt’s Christmas display has attracted thousands of onlookers since its debut in 2004. But this will be the last year for the Albert Road display with soaring electricity prices making it unaffordable. “We’re going all out for our last year,” Kurt said. “And because this will be the last time we do it, it’s drawn a fair bit of attention. “We’re hoping to finally crack the $20,000 mark in terms of funds raised for the local emergency services.” Kurt said he had spent at least $35,000 on lights, displays, a snow machine and assorted attractions over the years. An electricity company will pay for his electricity bill for December, which was $1700 last year. “It’s going to be a little bit emotional to see it end, to tell

you the truth,” he said. “But on the bright side I’m going to reflect on the achievements we’ve made as a family. “As sad as it is to see it go, we’ll keep the positive side in mind.” Most of his lights and ornaments will be sold at a garage sale on January 7, with a much smaller display to adorn his home next year. “We’ll have all the Christmas gurus on the Border taking a piece,” he said. “I hope they go to local people so they can still be seen on the Border and we as a family can still get to see them. “I hope there’s someone else on the Border that takes on the idea of lighting up their house like we have if they’re in the financial position to do that. “I’d love to see someone else continue the idea.” The display will be switched on at 8.30pm on December 1 and the main emergency services fundraising event held on December 17. About 8000 people are expected to visit the home over December.

Renovators at major risk of new health problems from asbestos
ALBURY Council has joined a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of working with asbestos when maintaining or renovating homes. Asbestos Diseases Research Institute is launching the campaign across the state, With as many as one in three Australian homes containing asbestos, the campaign aims to educate local handymen, women, homeowners and their children about the risks of being exposed to asbestos fibres. In launching the campaign, Professor Nico van Zandwijk, an international leader in asbestos disease research and Director of the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute paid tribute to Albury Council for supporting the campaign. “We’re delighted that council has joined us in our appeal to homeowners, handymen and renovators so they can learn about the dangers of working with asbestos and can protect themselves and their families from asbestos dust and fibres,” he said. “We’re urging homeowners and renovators, particularly young couples who often enjoy the challenge of doing the work themselves and who are working within tight budgets, to ask themselves if their home could contain asbestos and could they be putting their health and the health of their family at risk by disturbing asbestos.” If a home was built or renovated in the years leading up to 1985, it most likely con-
tains asbestos and while if left undisturbed it does not pose a health risk. But during renovations or the demolition of these homes, asbestos fibres can be released into the air and be inhaled leading to asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. “The real issue with asbestos related diseases is that the patients being diagnosed today, were exposed to asbestos 20-40 years ago and so by educating families about the risks and preventative measures they can take today, we aim to reduce the number of Australians diagnosed with asbestos related disease in the future,” Professor van Zandwijk said. Peter Dunphy, Director Operations Group WorkCover NSW and member of the Asbestos Education Committee said, thanks to the efforts of employer and worker groups and regulatory authorities, awareness of how to remove asbestos safely is increasing amongst workers. “We want people to better understand the risks associated with asbestos and what is needed to be done to ensure its safe removal and disposal,” Mr Dunphy said. Licensed asbestos removalists have specialist knowledge about different types and forms of asbestos including how to safely handle and remove asbestos material. Visit www.workcover.nsw.gov.au to find out about regulations and obligations regarding asbestos removal.
City delivers free calendar to homes
WODONGA residents have received a free 2012 calendar from the city council. The 12 photographs were taken by local photographers during the Wodonga calendar photography competition. The winning photograph, titled Woodland Grove at night, was taken by amateur photographer John Pennay, who has three photographs in the calendar. Wodonga Mayor Cr Mark Byatt said the calendar would be a great information tool for residents. “This is the first time Wodonga Council has produced a free calendar for its residents,” he said.
“The calendar contains a great amount of information including upcoming events, emergency information, school holidays and preschool enrolments. “This will be an informative and professional looking addition to homes.” If you live in Wodonga, and you do not receive the calendar, please contact Wodonga Council’s customer service on 6022 9300 who will arrange for one to be delivered. Additional calendars are available for purchase at Wodonga Council’s customer service office, the Wodonga Visitor Information Centre and the Bonegilla Migrant Experience for $5.

Students to help launch book BORDER children’s author Alan Bowater is set to launch his latest book with the help of students from Yackandandah Kindergarten and Primary School. “Daisy-May and the Aliens” is his seventh publication. Alan has been visiting the school and kindergarten to work closely with the students who have already received a sneak peek of the new book and have been inspired to create out of this world stories and artworks of their own. The book will be offi-
cially launched in conjunction with the Yackandandah Kindergarten and Primary School Children’s Art Show where the students “alien themed” artworks and stories will be on display for the community, on Friday, December 2, at the Yackandandah Public Hall. Kindergarten and primary school children will perform at 6.30 with the launch of the book at 7pm. To help celebrate the launch the children will also sing a song and perform a reader’s theatre version of one of Alan’s books.
Alan Bowater lives in Albury. He was a primary school teacher for 22 years and a teacher/librarian for 10 years before becoming a writer. Since then Alan has published six children’s picture books. Pete Pascoe, a Melbourne artist illustrates the books. Apart from stories Alan has a play script based on his first two books available to schools. It is titled, “We Can Show You The World”.
Students show they are ‘koolest’ in state
STUDENTS from several Albury high schools have won the Koolest Skool title for their city. Kool Skools is a recording and multimedia project for secondary level students and is likened to a mini version of the ARIAs. Kool Skools has introduced artists like Delta Goodrem, Missy Higgins, Anthony Callea and Axle Whitehead into the music industry. On Saturday 45 students, parents, teachers and AlburyCity staff made the trip to Melbourne for the 2011 Kool Skools awards. Albury received 11 nominations, including best fe-
male vocalist, best acoustic track, best alternative rock band as well as best male vocalist. And it took out the Koolest Skool award which is judged on the number of nominations received, the effort gone into the artwork and multimedia, the diversity in the music within the project and how the community has worked together to make the project happen. AlburyCity’s Youth Development Officer, Amanda Wilson said Albury has been keenly involved in the Kool Skools project for the past five years. “The program allows young people to develop
their creativity, learn about the music industry, and get recognition and community support for their talents,” she said. “Albury has some amazing young artists, who have great futures in the music industry and this project provides a perfect platform for them to achieve their goals and dreams. “The project is built on the great relationships AlburyCity has with schools, parents and importantly the fantastic music teachers.” A majority of the young people that are a part of the Kool Skools project perform regularly at the Retro Youth Café.

McLeod, Natalie Sargent, Grantley Ward, Henry Ring, Olivia Toth and Nicholas Coughlan from Years 9-11, weren’t even born when Whispering Jack debuted in 1986, but so typical of a music superstar, John Farnham’s music transcends the generations and they are as hooked to his sound as so many before them. “The experience has been truly great for us all,” Pipe Major Callum McLeod said. “When you see the massive crowds that come to see
him, you realise how no-one comes close to John’s brilliant talents in performing. “The first night, particularly, was a blow-away, an experience none of us will ever forget.” The crowds are as eclectic as you will ever see with the Pipers chatting with concert goers aged from 7-70 years. The concerts have been a full house. Their performance ended with the final concert last Saturday night.

GETTING
This is your day – enjoy it
FOR some it can feel like it has taken a lifetime to finally find “the one”, so naturally you want to make sure your wedding day is as perfect as your partner. We have compiled a checklist to give you some time frames for this exciting journey, so get a journal or diary and start organising one of the most memorable and amazing days of your new life! Congratulations and enjoy! 12 months or more before the day: § Start deciding now on the formality, style and theme. § Set wedding priorities – make a list of the elements most important to you. This will help you decide on a date, budget your expenses and delegate tasks. § Find a system that works for you (binder, folder, book, etc.) to keep notes, brochures, check lists, menus and other printed material. § The B-word already? Yes, budgets! Talk about it together first, then if your parents (or other generous souls) wish to contribute, discuss with them who’s paying for what. § Think of two possible wedding dates. In the next month or so, you should determine who your most important vendor will be and okay the date with them. § Consider hiring a wedding consultant; also start thinking about how your friends, family and wedding party can help out. If people offer their services, don’t be afraid to delegate, nicely. 11 months out: § Start interviewing and booking vendors such as: officiant, photographers, florists, bands or DJs and ceremony performers, caterers, reception or ceremony sites 10 months out: § Ask your chosen attendants to honor you by being in your wedding party (including any children you wish to include). Make sure everyone involved is aware of your expectations. § Draw up a preliminary guest list with input from both sides. Think of it as a wish list then narrow it down to a close idea of final numbers. § Look through books, magazines and websites for wedding gown ideas. § If you plan on getting your wedding gown and or brides-

ith over 40 years combined restaurant experience, owner Allan Parker and his Chef Sean Ford make a formidable team. Both have classical training so Italian and French influences abound, with sous vide a popular technique in their kitchen. Crafting their own butter, roasting coffee beans, making sour dough, pasta, sauces and Coppa Colo (salami) could all be in a day’s work and they enjoy using fresh extra virgin olive oil produced just a few kilometres away. Allan and Sean present a modern take on classic cuisine. Their mutual philosophy and passion is to use as much local fresh produce as possible and foraged foods are frequently on the menu. Sensitive to the environment, they opt for sustainable ingredients and refuse to serve fished-out or endangered seafoods such as scallops, marlin, swordfish and pategonian tooth fish. Both want their kids to experience these foods in the future. For a recent Savaterre Wine dinner, Allan raided the vineyard of prestigious winemaker Keppel Smith in Beechworth to return with yabbies, wild nettle, rabbit, watercress and blackberries to include in a menu Keppel matched with his elegant cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Poached Yabbies with Wild Nettle, Sweet Pea Agnolotti and watercress was an inspiring entrée and Savaterre 2005 Chardonnay with the subtle aroma of fresh ripe pear and fig with complex mineral notes was a brilliant match. However, the 2008 Chardonnay was also exceptional so we were spoiled for choice. Then vineyard rabbit was braised on a root vegetable mirepoix as a filling for individual Wild Rabbit Pithivier, complete with home-made butter puff pastry. With this superb dish, I thought Keppel’s 2004 Pinot Noir was the winning wine match but others favoured the 2009 Pinot. Roasted Pheasant from Gigi’s poulterer was a treat served with plump blackberries, a daring but restrained Tobacco Cream Foam, Pommes Fondant and an exquisite pheasant ‘jus’ displaying such finesse with rich umami flavours and a typical lip-smacking texture. While Sean is generally unmoved by the current molecular gastronomy wave, he explained his siphoned Tobacco Cream foam was a one-off, as experiments with a tobacco sauce were far too intrusive for the pheasant. Here the Savaterre 2006 Pinot Noir with enticing cherry savoury nuances, silky ripe tannins and a lingering finish completed a magical food and wine marriage and experience. Keppel Smith is a winemaker who believes that natural, unhurried winemaking results in wines with increased intensity of aroma, flavour texture and length. His patience pays off as Savaterre wines are on some of the best restaurant wine lists in Australia. Gigi’s are planning another winemaker dinner on March 18 next year. As part of the 20th anniversary of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, celebrated winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda will present 20 (yes 20!) vintages of iconic Giaconda rare wines matched to a fivecourse degustation menu featuring local and foraged produce. Vintages from 1991 to 2010 will include Rick’s Chardonnay, Roussanne, Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Cost is $325 per person and bookings can be made by phoning Gigi’s on (03) 5728 2575. (I won’t be missing this once in a life-time opportunity from a restaurant that possibly has the best Giaconda wine list in the world.) Apart from their a la carte menu, there’s Gigi’s seasonal, good value five-course dinner with or without matching wine. Now on “Suckling Pig Sunday” lunch or dinner draws a full house. In January, they’ll give the pig a rest and introduce “Summer Seafood Sunday” as their seafood supplier is first class. Making the 2011 Wine List of the Year from Australian Gourmet Traveller and Fine Wine Partners and being supported by professional staff and suppliers, Gigi’s is indeed in top form. oth our climate and the beauty of the surrounding area encourage people to enjoy the outdoors. Two of the most popular areas used by walkers and cyclists all year are along the Murray River and up on the Nail Can Hill. After the beautiful rains we have had, there has been a marked increase in the number of weedy plants growing, so called because they appear where they are unwanted. Many of these “weeds” are valued in private gardens. However they have escaped into areas in which they are unwanted because of birds eating and then dropping their seed, by people dumping garden refuse in areas where they should not be doing so, or merely by people unknowingly carrying seed attached to their shoes or clothing when they walk in the bush. The seed of some plants travels easily on the wind too. Escapee plants can pose a serious risk to Australia’s economic, environmental and social assets, threatening the productive capacity of the land and altering its appearance drastically. In a season as good as the one we are having, gardeners should make it their business to
understand which plants can escape from the garden situation easily and survive in the bush. Escapees can often take over an area if they like the conditions, to the extent that local native plants are over-run and disappear. In each state different plants prove to be pests according to their liking of the conditions. There are invasive plants in every plant category, from grasses and perennials to trees. In our area gardeners will be familiar with many plants considered to be pests. Everyone of course, knows Patersons Curse with its pretty blue-purple flowers in the spring. This plant devastates thousands of hectares of good farmland every year. One group of plants which we need to watch here in Albury-Wodonga are all the succulents which became so popular during the drought seasons. This year, they have grown and spread prolifically. They must never be dumped over a fence or thrown away in a bush area, as they grow roots and establish themselves so very easily, even from a single leaf. If you wish to get rid of them, place them in two plastic bags, one inside the other,
PRUE SMITH
and place them in your rubbish bin. Otherwise you can compost them, watching them as they decompose to ensure they don’t multiply. Lavandula stoechas, the Spanish or Italian lavender, is a pest in the High Country around us, while Arum lilies, which are so fashionable at present, can block our waterways if given a chance. Olive trees have been categorized as an invasive pest in South Australia, so should be watched locally as we have a similar climate. Most gardeners are aware of the potential of plants like Oxalis and Privett trees to escape, but did you know that Peppercorn trees are a nuisance in farmland? The pretty little Vinca is invasive in bushland as are broom, gazanias, the superb banana passionfruit vine, honeysuckle, the asparagus fern and the Glory lily – Gloriosa superba. Some bulbs can survive in our conditions with no care. Freesias and Watsonias are among them. There are many others. Gardeners are enjoying the current wonderful conditions, but we all must be aware of the nature of our chosen plants and take responsibility should we want to dispose of them.

very couple of years, I head to Burgundy for the Grand Jours, a five day exhibition of the best that Burgundy has to offer. One of the events is the Salon de Jeunes Vignerons, an event showcasing exclusively wines from up and coming young wine makers. And is it exciting stuff! Attention to detail, and a refreshing focus on cleanliness in the winery, produces some eyebrow-raising drops of surprising quality. While the old guard would never admit it, the “young guns” of the Burgundy region proved they were going to be a force to reckon with. Down the road at Rutherglen, we have an extraordinary
collection of “young guns” who are in similar fashion making their mark in the wine industry. Keep in mind it is not enough just to be born into a wine family – if you don’t have talent, the reputation of the inherited label can fade pretty fast.
FAMILY AFFAIR
Locally, the Rutherglen wine scene is not made up of big corporates who happen to have young winemakers. Uniquely, virtually every vineyard has a young wine maker who is the next generation of a winemaking family – even more remarkably, the winemaker parent is usually still alive and kicking (don’t you just LOVE the magical life pre-
serving quality of the grape!). It is worth looking at the line-up and their famous fathers, still living:• Suzie Campbell (Colin Campbell) • Stephen Chambers (Bill Chambers) • Damien Cofield (Max Cofield) • David Morris (Mick Morris) • Jen Pfeiffer (Chris Pfeiffer) • Andrew Sutherland Smith (George Sutherland Smith) For others, their dad may be gone, but the tradition lives on:• Andrew and Richard Buller (Dick Buller) • Simon Killeen (Chris
Killeen) • Nick Brown (Peter Brown) And for a couple of wineries, the family connection is only a hair’s breath away:• Mandy Jones (niece of Les Jones) • Rowly Milhinch (Scion Vineyard) (great great great grandson of GF Morris)
KICKING GOALS
It is one thing to be handed the baton in a wine family – the challenge is what to do with it. Are the young’uns kicking goals? To name two only – you bet! Jen Pfeiffer is a multitrophy young winemaker, who has made it into the Top 10 Young Winemakers of the Year.

And although David Morris will cringe at being categorised as a “young” winemaker, he is the son of a living legend and a worthy recipient of the Morris “baton” – the Morris winery was recently named “Winery of the Year” at the Wine State Australasian Wine Awards, and David named “Winemaker of the Year” at the same event.

ENTRANT: Former James Fallon High student Jerome Vibas will have work on show. By BLAIR THOMSON A new exhibition featuring works from some of the Border’s best art students opens at the Albury Art Gallery tonight. 14 students have had pieces selected for the show, which will run until December 18. “There’s some really strong pieces from students from a number of schools in Albury,” Albury Art Gallery learning and outreach officer Dave Smith explained. “We’re missing works from a few students that
got in to next year’s ARTEXPRESS exhibition, which showcases the best works in the state. “That just shows the strong standard of work by students in the area.” The 14 pieces include paintings, photos, sculptures, drawings and mixed media works. “One that I particularly like is a drawing from a student at Scots School, Campbell Hulme, called Inheritance is Hereditary,” Mr Smith said. “It’s a really skilfully
drawn and beautiful image.” The works are from the students’ final portfolios for the HSC. Mr Smith said it was good for them to have their art shown in a gallery. “But it’s also a good exhibition for Year 11 students to come along and have a look at some HSC work,” he said. “I’d really encourage people to have a look.” The Year 12 Art Show opens at the Albury Art Gallery at 6pm tonight (Friday). NEW: A Candela Lie will play new songs during an acoustic show at The Albion with four other bands. By BLAIR THOMSON THEY’RE used to turning the amps up to 11. But the volume will be kept to a minimum tonight (Friday) when five progressive rock bands play acoustic sets at the Albion. Star Assassin head the bill with support from Straight No Chaser, Caelum, Middleton Road and local act A Candela Lie. A Candela Lie member Daniel Caulfield said the night will be a rare chance for fans to hear the intricate details of their songs usually lost in the swirl of distortion and guitar effects. “It’s going to be a bit more chilled out than what we normally do,” he told NewsWeekly. “We’ve got to make sure we play every single note right. “When we jam at home we usually play acoustic anyway when we write the songs. “You’ll be able to hear all the bits intimately rather than kind of having your face melted off.” The band was born from various local groups including Third Estate, Heroes Down and I Am Atlas.
Each member brings their own influences and styles into the group. “Some of us really love heavy music, some of us are into prog-rock and some of us like acoustic stuff and dance music,” Dan said. “It’s a whole different experience and everyone’s got their own bit that they bring.” The band’s first album, a concept record described as “a melodical journal and the documented result of a search for something more to life”, is set to be released next month. “We wanted to challenge ourselves and do something that no-one around here’s done before,” Daniel explained. “We could have just made a straight forward rock album, we could probably do that blindfolded but we wanted to challenge ourselves. “The concept is that the main character’s got a phone call, he’s fighting with demons and each song is a different chapter. “We’re inspired by progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd that have concept albums.” The central character on the al-
bum is convinced that there is another plane of existence and abandons his family in his quest for truth. “Each of our shows will be the album from start to finish,” Daniel said. “We’ve got a few massive things coming up and we’re going to do a tour early next year once we get all our stuff sorted out.” The former I Am Atlas front man has seen a few interesting tributes to his previous band. “A couple of really dedicated fans got married and had I Am Atlas tattooed on the side of their necks,” he said. “That’s really cool, it’s the biggest complement you could ever get. “But that was a different project. “Our new group is concentrating on being more of a progressive band and be a bit more rocky and out there.” Daniel is looking forward to hearing the other bands on the bill in an acoustic setting. “It should be pretty interesting,” he said. For more information call the Albion on 6021 3377.
BOXOFFICE By BLAIR THOMSON MOVIE: Moneyball (M) DURATION: 133 minutes BRAD Pitt plays Billy Beane, general manager of perennial underdogs the Oakland Athletics, in new baseball movie Moneyball. Teams like the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox have huge budgets to buy big-name players. But the Athletics, with their comparably tiny budget, must compete in a David and Goliath battle with the baseball behemoths despite their funds only affording bottom-of-the-barrel players. So, says Beane, why try and beat the Yankees at their game when you

can change the game? Beane sets out to “be the card counters at the blackjack table” and employs economics graduate and statistician Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) as his assistant and recruiter. Using a hand-built computer program and huge log of player data, Brand analyses the players’ true worth in the hopes of finding value in those overlooked or discarded by other teams. Instead of building a team with the best players, they craft a team using statistics. Pitt plays Beane with the self assuredness and confidence you would expect from a character cocky enough to think he can reinvent baseball.
Hill, in a further step away from his baby-faced roles in dude-films like Superbad, largely plays the straight character with only a few comedic moments thrown in. While baseball is rarely seen or heard in Australia, the movie is interesting enough. There are some great high speed camera shots of players in action and the film seems to capture the spirit of the game. Those that love baseball will probably be enthralled by this film, but those that know little of the game will probably just give it a pass mark.

Plenty of room for the family
C
OMFORTABLE family living or an ideal investment opportunity awaits the new owners of this week’s featured prop-
erty. Situated in the perfect position within walking distance to the Birallee shopping centre this home offers ample space inside and out. Timber panelling features in the large living and dining areas with gas cooking and plenty of cupboard space offered in the good sized kitchen. The master bedroom features a walk-in robe and en-suite for convenience while the remaining two bedrooms are serviced by a
large bathroom with separate toilet. Outside a vine covered pergola provides privacy from the neighbours and the extensive back yard allows for a myriad of options. With ample space the yard could easily be turned into a children’s wonderland with swing-set, sandpit and even a pool and still allow enough room for mum or dad to tinker. A handy garden shed with concrete floor is in place and a well established vegetable patch provides for the green thumb in the family. Easily maintained gardens border the property and a touch of TLC would bring this affordable family home up a treat.

BEFORE you engage a real estate agent to sell your property, it is a good idea to consider a simple checklist of the things you want to negotiate and want covered in the authority. Firstly there is the advertising. Your agent will discuss what is likely to be most effective. Ask for an explanation about the expense and the most cost-effective means of advertising. Make sure the authority clearly states the amount you have agreed to spend and you have sighted and approved a comprehensive advertising schedule. Do not overlook settlement terms. For example, you may require a 60-day cash contract to coincide with a purchase you have made. Make sure your authority is worded so that your requirement is met. Be quite specific about which items you will be selling and those you will be taking with you. This is important if you want to take potted plants from your garden or remove fittings, like a dishwasher. Make sure the authority records everything accurately. Then there is the time you will give your agent to make the sale.
Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria Most authorities have an exclusive period and, sometimes, a non-exclusive period as well. Whatever time you agree upon, make sure the authority reflects this. Last but not least, there is the commission you will pay. It is entirely negotiable. To gain a sense of what is a reasonable rate, obtain quotations from a number of agents before finally settling on the agent you will employ. Authorities also include a price range in which the agent estimates the property may sell. This must be filled in at the time you sign the authority. If you are uncertain about any of the terms of an authority your agent asks you to sign, obtain independent legal advice.

Caution over rate cut cash
Following the RBA’s decision to cut the official interest rate, more than seven out of 10 mortgage holders are choosing to continue to pay their mortgage at the same levels they had before the rate drop. A poll of 1400 people across Australia by The Digital Edge shows that 76 per cent of those with a mortgage intend to maintain their monthly payments at the same level as before the latest rate cut, instead of spending the extra funds freed up by the cut. Aussie’s Founder and Executive Chairman Mr John Symond said the RBA had noted that its “restrictive” monetary policy over the last
year, which they employed to counter inflation caused by the strength of the mining sector, had resulted in “cautious behaviour by households and the high exchange rate have had a noticeable dampening effect.” “The RBA may have loosened its stance with its move last week, but our research shows it was not enough to inject confidence into our economy,” Mr Symond said. “They will need to cut rates further if it is to have the desired effect of getting Australians to start spending again in order to stimulate parts of the economy, such as retail, which have been experiencing tough times.” “Only 14 per cent of those
with a mortgage said they would save or spend the extra funds freed up by the rate drop, which means that retailers can expect continued subdued trading in the leadup to Christmas”, he added. The poll also showed that 42 per cent of respondents felt more confident of proceeding to make a purchase if they were in the market to buy a property over the next six months, while 52 per cent felt neither more or less confident. “Australians understand our country is still susceptible to economic shocks from overseas and I believe that confidence will not improve much unless there are further rate cuts,” Mr Symond said.
Mortgage costs bite home owners
THE average housing costs for households with a mortgage increased by $120 per week or 42 per cent over the past decade, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The bureau’s Housing Occupancy and Costs report found between 1999-2000 and 2009-10, average weekly housing costs for private renters increased by $78 per week or 34 per cent (CPI adjusted) and average weekly housing cost for owners without a mortgage increased $5 per week or 17 per cent (CPI adjusted). Over the same period, the proportion of households that owned their home without a
mortgage fell from 39 to 33 per cent. The proportion of households with a mortgage increased from 32 to 36 per cent and the proportion of private renter households increased from 20 to 24 per cent. Households with a mortgage had the highest housing costs, averaging $408 a week or 18 per cent of their gross income. Over the past decade the proportion of gross income that households with a mortgage spend on housing costs has been stable, at about 18 per cent. Private renters spent an average of $305 per week on rent, or 20% of gross income.

Kentucky trip proves magic time for teams YOUNG Border basketballers participating in the Kentucky Bound basketball tour organised by local basketball identity, Allen McCowan have returned home after what McCowan described as a very successful trip. The tour included the mandatory basketball games as well as school time for the youngsters and a bit of fun along the way. McCowan said it was everything he’d hoped it would be, and a little bit more. He said the fact that both the girls and boys teams won the majority of games was a bonus. “They really played well together, their aggressive nature kept them there,” McCowan said. “The boys ended up winning every game and the girls ended up losing the last by two points.” McCowan said he’d expected the teams to be competitive but wasn’t sure if the lack of playing time together would affect their on-court performance. “Those teams have been training and playing together for a while,” he said. “I thought a bit of team cohesion might have been the difference in games but I truly expected them to be competitive … I’m not surprised that they ended up winning some games.” He said another highlight was the way the players were received by the Kentucky residents. “I wasn’t surprised by them being receptive the way they were, that’s just Kentucky people,” McCowan said. “They are welcoming and they enjoyed the experience of meeting a different culture and different people.” One of the main aspects of the tour was the family atmosphere.
Trip reward for year’s efforts
WODONGA Wolves are heading to Dallas, Texas this weekend as part of a USA college basketball tour, the first time a tour of this type has been organised for a group at this level. Veteran warns of river dangers From page 36 “That should put them over the top,â€? he said. “And the main thing is to relax. “Once people get into trouble, they panic and that accentuates the problem. “But 99.9 per cent of the time they’ll come out the other side if they simply don’t panic. “And if people get into strife the current will ultimately take them to a bank.â€? Alcohol, tree jumping and diving into unknown waters are the biggest dangers. “Alcohol lessens your inhibitions so you’re certainly going to take more risks but it also lessens your judgement and physical abilities,â€? Mr Zerbst said. “ I wouldn’t go on my own, and I wouldn’t go in isolated regions because there are snags under the water. “There are challenges out there and if you’re not a conďŹ dent swimmer you really shouldn’t be in the river.â€? Mr Zerbst said the waters of Lake Hume can be just as dangerous and more unpredictable. “You don’t have the current but you have the depth,â€? he said. “We’ve had some pretty tragic situations with Outward Bound back in the 60s where quite a number of boys drowned in a sudden squall. “I was out there once with a world champion kayayer, some wind come down the valley and sunk our boat and we had to be rescued by the water police. “It has its joys but it also has its dangers.â€? Mr Zerbst said he used to be able to swim from the former Cumberoona dock to the Causeway bridge against the current in about 90 minutes. “You have to have the swimming capability, know the river and stay away from unknown territory,â€? he said. “If you use the river sensibly, take care and follow good safety procedures then the river is a safe place.â€?

Lady Wolves continue an outstanding season
WODONGA’S Lady Wolves don’t look like stumbling this season after yet another weekend of dominant performances in Victoria’s Country Basketball League. Saturday night saw the Border girls easily account for Deniliquin’s Lady Giants 95-30 on home turf at Wodonga while on Sunday they travelled to Seymour to comfortably defeat the Lady Blasters 64-36. Holly Bawden top scored on Saturday night with 17 points, adding a further 12 in Sunday’s game while Alex Trezise topped the tables against the Blasters with 13. The victories take the girl’s record to eight wins and with just two games remaining in the season to be played in January it’d be a fair bet to say the Lady Wolves will be vying for a spot in the state ďŹ nals. In contrast the men had mixed results with a one and one result but a massive 176-40 point win over the Giants on Saturday night showed that it’ll take a strong team to beat the Border boys. And the Seymour Blasters showed they have that strength with a hard fought 68-56 win over the Wolves Sunday. After an opening term barrage of 53-10 Saturday’s game was done and dusted and coach, Mick Merrilees said it was a good opportunity for the younger members of the team to take the oor and show their skills. He said Kyle McMullan, Tom Sharp and Jon Lindhe were outstanding, McMullan ďŹ nishing with a huge 28 point bag while Lindhe contributed 22. Sunday saw a tough sea-sawing game as expected against the Blasters with the opening term setting the scene, the Wolves trailing by just two points at the ďŹ rst break. But from there the Blasters began to apply the pressure and they opened a strong 10 point margin at the long break before the Wolves reversed the trend in the third to close the gap to four points at the ďŹ nal break. With the blasters again opening a handy 10 point lead in the ďŹ nal stanza the Wolves continued to ďŹ ght hard and closed the gap again. Matt Asquith drained a big three pointer for the Wolves with just a minute and a half on the clock to close the gap to just three. But a technical foul by the Border team saw all hope fade in the dying seconds.

Top skiers to show off their skills at water parklands
THIS weekend will see the Albury Wodonga Water Ski Club host some of Australia’s best three event water skiers as they compete in the prestigious Malibu series. The event involves trick, slalom and jump and skiing over all age groups with competitors from Queensland, NSW and Victoria. The Malibu series is held at ďŹ ve sites across NSW including Port Macquarie, Newcastle, Canberra and Albury Wodonga. All series results accumulate with the NSW state titles on the Border in April next year.
The Border club, one of the strongest in the nation, is poised to take many of the events, especially in the junior divisions with a strong junior development program. Newcomers to the club over the past couple of years have been up and coming skiers Mason Crocker and Brodie Godde, both tipped to do well in the junior boys event. The open men’s division will be hotly contested with locals Dave Finnimore and Terry Maginnity in good form and the two Bennie girls from Bellbridge back from a long break with Tegan
tipped to take out the open women’s jump event. Australian overall woman’s champion, Cathryn Humphrey will also be in attendance after a break since returning from the World Championships in Russia in July. Other skiers to watch will be Callan and Riley Ashcroft from Wagga, Jenna Reardon from Temora and possibly the youngest club skier in her ďŹ rst event Mia Crocker. Skiing is at the Water Parklands on the Lincoln Causeway from 8am to 7.30pm Saturday and 8am to 5pm Sunday.

River ‘a danger’ BE CAREFUL: Swimmers should take extra caution on the Murray River as summer approaches, according to Tony Zerbst. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON.
Veteran warns of hidden perils lurking under the surface
By BLAIR THOMSON TONY Zerbst has spent thousands of hours over his 60 years navigating the Murray River. While he knows the enjoyment and health benefits it can provide, he’s also acutely aware of the danger that lurks below its surface. A keen paddler and former
swimmer, Mr Zerbst had two friends become paraplegics after diving into the river. He has also helped about a dozen struggling swimmers to safety. “I’ve probably spent more time on the river than anybody in living history; I know the river well enough to speak with a fair amount
of authority,” he told NewsWeekly. Mr Zerbst is the head of a local safety campaign focusing on the Murray. He wants to warn people of the risk they take using the river and how to get out of trouble. “The river changes its base … one day it could be clear and the
next the current could bring logs,” he said. “If trees come down for instance, the water’s going to flow through that and there’s no way you’re going to make it through. “A lot of kayakers come to grief when they get swept into trees and get pinned to overhanging branch-
es by the current. “I once had to pull off a tracksuit bottom because it was pinned and caught on a snag and I couldn’t get off.” Anyone stuck in a snag should try to get their body horizontal, according to Mr Zerbst. Continued page 35
YOUR BEST BODY FREE! 12 WEEK CHALLENGE
WEEK TWELVE YOUR BEST BODY ROCK ON... This weekend was the last official group training session for the Your Best Body Challenge and to finish it off it was certainly a tough session. The main thing that it showed is the progress that each and every participant in the challenge has
made. All participants on the day tackle the challenge and gave it their all. It is amazing to see how far everyone has come in just 12 weeks. It has been an interesting journey for participants as well as the organisers of the challenge as we have seen people try new things,
push through obstacles and push towards their goals. We have one more, slightly fun session left and then it will be down to the judges to determine the inaugural winners of the Your Best Body Challenge. We are proud of every one of the participants who have made it through to the end and they
should all be proud of the results they have achieved. However remember the challenge doesn’t truly stop here. We hope that every one will continue to use the skills they have learnt to continue on their journey to feeling great, looking their best and having energy to burn!
