Springdale Heights residents flee crime
Moving on out By BLAIR THOMSON THREE residents at a Kaitlers Road block of units in Springdale Heights are being forced to move house following a spate of burglaries and a recent car fire. A 59-year-old woman’s uninsured Ford Fairlane was destroyed at the front of the property this week, leaving her and other residents fearing for their safety. The cause of the fire was unknown at the time of NewsWeekly going to print, and police said the car wouldn’t be forensically examined. One couple, who asked not to be named, said it was time to move out. “We’re really living in fear at the moment,” the woman said. “In the last two or three weeks we’ve had motorbikes stolen and people have jumped the fence during the day trying to steal tools. “The lady that had her car burnt is worried that there’s someone targeting her for whatever reason. “It’s a bit scary … you never know what’s going to happen next.” Police had told the couple there was little they could do following the burglaries. “With my fiance being pregnant it’s quite a worry,” the man said. “We’ve already moved out our stereo and TV just to be on the safe side. “I was worried the car fire was going to blow up and we would lose the house.” While car fires can be started through electrical faults, it’s understood most are deliberately lit.
DESTROYED… A Ford Fairlane following a fire this week. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON Albury Inspector Matthew Tishler said investigations were continuing into the fire and wouldn’t say if it was linked to recent arson attacks in South Albury targeting cars, a boat and playground. “At this stage, because we don’t know how it started, we can’t speculate on whether they’re linked,” he said. “The fire brigade couldn’t shed any light on how it started.” The couple said the owner of the units was considering installing security cameras and fixing a broken sensor light. “There’s three people moving out so far,” the woman said. “It’s going to be good to get out of here.” The incident follows a fire in Avro Street, East Albury, which damaged a caravan. The owner of a car destroyed by fire in South Albury said it was never forensically examined by police and the owner of a boat destroyed nearby said he wasn’t sure if it had been examined.

Call to keep hydrants clear By BLAIR THOMSON WHEN it comes to fighting fires, every second counts. Local fire fighters are wasting time digging to access hydrants, which are often covered in grass and filled with dirt. Albury firefighter Daniel Castley said it was important people located hydrants on their nature strips and ensured they were clean and accessible. “I went to one incident where the hydrant had one foot of dirt covering it because someone had put a garden bed over it, he said. “It could take five to 10 min-
utes to get that clear. “Every second counts in a life-threatening situation. Ms Castley said fire trucks had about 2000 litres of water on board which would last between three and five minutes during an emergency. Hydrants are usually underground, covered by a metal plate in NSW and Victorian hydrants are generally above ground. Markers on gutters and posts show their location. “We’re putting the awareness out there and asking people to keep them free of any dirt or grass, Mr Castley said.

“Water supplies from the hydrants are our life source. “Coming into winter when people are using heating for drying clothes, you have that potential for house fires. Wodonga firefighter Terry Heafield said most new estates in the city used in-ground hydrants, rather than pillar hydrants which were more accessible. “Keeping them well maintained makes our job a lot easier and quicker, he said. IN SAILING – especially cruising offshore – one of the most fundamental rules is to keep a good look-out for any possible dangers. That can be anything from another boat to a submerged container, rock or tree. Despite this, you inevitably have close calls with things such as unlit boats, but at least taking every foreseeable precaution stacks the odds slightly more in your favour. Sadly, the necessity for doing so on land is becoming ever more apparent, even in this relatively quiet city far from Sydney and Melbourne and their culture of drive-by shootings. Not only did we have a temple robbed and in a separate incident two beagles killed recently, but there is an arsonist, or multiple arsonists, on the loose, with another attack earlier this week. Our home is no longer our castle or if it is, it is under siege. Nor can we shut out the world by closing our front door. Putting on a bigger front door, high solid fences and whacking surveillance cameras on the walls pointed everywhere is only part of the solution to the problem, if that. No, what we need is a more vigilant, caring and sharing society, where we keep a keen look-out not just for ourselves, but for our neighbours. Keeping a good watch is a concept that works at sea. Programs such as Neighbourhood Watch show that it can also work on land; maybe it is time we upped the ante in Albury Wodonga and got behind such programs more enthusiastically.

Rate rises are necessary evil ALBURY business owners are unhappy about rate rises announced by Albury Council, but the council says it’s a necessary evil. The average business property will be charged an extra $783 a year in rates and services by council, and the average home will be charged an extra $159. An average business will pay $9332 each year, the average home owner $2074. Council will sink further into debt, forecast to be $53.9m by the end of 2012-13, to pay for projects including the new Lavington Library, road works and landscaping, the Wagirra Trail and upgrades to the Albury Entertainment Centre. “A little bit of pain puts off that time where we need, say, a 10 per cent rise,” council’s act-
ing is a money grab”. Dummond Golf Albury part owner Des Royal said he could see some justification. “But I just don’t think they spend the money wisely,” he said. “They should look at reducing the debt and spending what they pay in interest elsewhere in the community.” Several other business owners expressed similar concerns. But Mayor Alice Glachan said the council had a commitment to “prudent and responsible budgeting” amid the rising cost of electricity and fuel, meeting carbon tax liabilities and replacing old infrastructure. The total council draft budget involves a spend of $113.9m including $23.7m for capital works.
THE news of yet another rate rise has proved the last straw for the Albury Citizens and Ratepayers Movement, who plan to turn their dissatisfaction into physical action. Association president John Emmery said they had decided to run a team in the next NSW local government elections in Albury in September. “We will be advertising for candidates shortly – the more the merrier,” he said. “Council rates have risen more than 17 per cent in three years, which is way above the ability of some people to pay. “It’s all very well to say just a couple of dollars but it adds up with all the other stuff. Albury has the highest rate of foreclosures in the district at two per cent. Why? Because

of costs. “We want a fair go for everyone.” Mr Emmery, who served on Albury Council for 12 years from the early 1980s, said the association had no issues with what the council was doing but did with the way they were doing it. “They are inefficient. Costs are out of control. Governments of all persuasions have grown lazy. “They need to be more efficient and give us more for our dollar.” He said one issue was with the number of consultants employed and the amount they were paid. “Consultants borrow your watch, tell you the time and charge you a fortune for it,” he said.
“With the calibre of staff we have at Albury if they cannot have a vision and plan, they should be replaced. We should have everything in house. If you spend $1m on consultants and hangers on that is $1m less to spend on the project. Just build the bloody road!” Mr Emmery said he had not ruled out standing himself, but that would depend on how many suitable candidates came forward. “We don’t care if you are working, retired, male or female – you just have to be strong in your conviction and have compassion and a genuine desire to see that costs are kept down and everyone gets a fair go,” he said. Anyone interested is asked to visit the association’s website, www.acrmalbury.com for more information.

ing general manager Michael Keys said. “Small steps are a lot easier to manage than a big step. “We’re trying to take up the opportunity to increase our revenue, but at a small step, rather than putting it off and making the easy political gain. “That only comes back and catches you in the long run.” While some business owners said they could understand why the council needed to raise rates as its bills increased, none said they were happy with the rise. “Of course it’s too much,” All Music owner Ian Wittingslow said. “It puts the pressure on businesses; look at all the vacant stores there are and the people who are getting laid off. “Without looking at cost savings first up, all they’re do-
ALBURY’S Manor House function room was bursting at the seams this week when The Community Crew @ Albury held its fifth annual “Don’t Forget Your Undies” morning tea. The idea behind the morning tea is for people to provide a gift such as underwear, shampoo, pyjamas and hygiene products, or anything that may be required by women and children utilising the women’s refuge services at Betty’s Place. And the response has been overwhelming, according to president of Community Crew Kellie Kadaoui. Kellie said when they started the day they originally received goods equal to around five garbage bags full whereas this year’s function received around four car loads. “Quite often when clients turn up to Betty’s
Place they’re literally in the clothes they have on their backs, so we invite people to come to our morning tea and they donate product that we in turn give back to Betty’s Place,” she said. “The women that come to the morning tea think, ‘if I was in that situation, what would I want’ and they really do excel themselves in what they bring.” Kellie said the morning tea differed from other charities in that it concentrated on the “here and now”. “We like to do something like this that’s instant,” Kellie said. “Around 176 women and over 250 children resided at Betty’s Place last year and that’s not including the women who couldn’t get in. That’s a sad indictment of our community, but on the flip side there is somewhere for them to go and those women and their children have the support they need.”

Police chief serves her time behind bars By BLAIR THOMSON ALBURY’S police chief spent time behind bars last week. But Superintendent Beth Stirton’s brief moment on the wrong side of the law was all for a good cause as Border identities raised money for Albury PCYC. While the results won’t be known for at least a week, it’s hoped $30,000 will be raised for the youth support service. “Without this money, we couldn’t run those programs, which really change the lives and behaviour of those who take part in them,Albury PCYC manager Jane Cartwright said. More than 20 people, including mayor Alice Glachan and Martin
Reid of Joss Construction, were “locked up at Bunnings and needed to raise $1000 to be released. “We always hold this in Youth Week because PCYC is an organisation that works with at-risk young people, Ms Cartwright said. “We had a mix of old and young people donating to our detainees and it’s great that there were so many people willing to donate. “Hopefully we’ll get to $30,000, but we’ll just have to wait for all the donations to come through. Supt Stirton said she had been happy to help the cause, noting that crime prevention and working with the community were an important part of modern policing. Time 4 Kids is PCYC’s major annual fundraiser.

SIX kilometres of roadside reserves will get some TLC thanks to a $69,700 government grant. Member for Albury Greg Aplin and the Minister for the Environment, Robyn Parker, announced the funding for an environmental restoration and rehabilitation project in Albury. Mr Aplin said Albury Council had been allocated the funds from the NSW government’s Environmental Trust, an independent statutory body established to undertake projects that enhance the environment of NSW. “The funds will be used to restore endangered ecological communities along Albury’s roadsides, Mr Aplin said. “It involves restoration and revegetation of about six kilometres of roadside reserves along Centaur Road, Pearsall Street, Overend Street, Pannach Lane and Mudge Street. “The project also involves raising the awareness of the significance of endangered ecological communities and the role roadsides play in fragmented landscapes. Ms Parker said the funds had come from the NSW Environmental Trust and this was one of 49 grants totalling $4.06 million under the 2011 round of the Environmental Restoration and Rehabilitation Program.

Trust weighs in to Uiver debate By CAROLINE STRAINIG
Art prize welcome surprise By CAROLINE STRAINIG AS YET more evidence that you are never too old to start something new, a 62-year-old Albury man has taken out one of the region’s most prestigious art prizes. Richard Janson, who has lived in Albury for 24 years and works in food manufacturing, won the Susan Moorhead Memorial Award, which was presented by the Friends of the Albury Art Gallery at a function on Friday evening. Established in memory of artist Susan Moorhead (1947-1990), the award serves to honour her commitment to art and her delight in the achievement and humanity of others. The award is presented biennially to an Albury-Wodonga emerging visual artist who clearly demonstrates promise in the field. It is open to emerging artists living within 100km radius of Albury-Wodonga. Thirty two artists entered this year, with 17 selected to be displayed at the gallery. The judges were prominent Melbourne artists. Mr Janson won with “Memento Mori II”, a vibrant photograph of fruit with lots of reds shot with time-lapse photography over a number of weeks as the fruit rotted. “I was inspired by the masters who used to paint still-lifes, and found no one had ever done something similar photography-wise,” he said. A keen hobby photographer, the time-lapse photograph was the first one Mr Janson had ever entered for anything and he was prompted to do so because of a 19-year-old friend’s positive attitude. “We used to talk about photography – and now
he has already got an exhibition for his work!” Mr Janson said. His daughter and wife are both artists, which also spurred him on. “I guess now we have three artists in the family,” he said. He plans to spend the $2000 cash on mounting other existing and yet-to-be-taken photographs for the solo exhibition at the gallery that is part of his prize. This will be staged sometime within the next 18 months. If that exhibition is successful, the Friends of Albury Art Gallery will organise for it to tour. They have already purchased his winning work for the gallery. Mr Janson’s prize-winning still-life and the other 16 works – which range from stunning paintings and drawings to chairs covered in handwriting - will be on display at the gallery until the end of May.
“

to be no proper mechanisms in place to ensure that the full heritage significance of this memorial is properly conserved.” He said the trust urged Albury Council not to proceed with the disposal and had offered its support towards heritage listing at the local, state and possibly national level. “Through its tax-deductible appeals system, the National Trust would be prepared to consider the establishment of a tax-deductible appeal to assist funding the restoration and suitable presentation and interpretation at Albury Airport,” he said. Mr Quint said the trust could only establish such an appeal if the plane remained in public hands or managed by a community trust. Albury mayor Alice Glachan is believed to have passed on his letter to council staff charged with handling expressions of interest in the plane, which officially closed on 3 April. Among those who have put submissions in are the Friends of the Cumberoona, Uiver organisation, which would like to see the aircraft moved only 300 metres to a new hangar with a clear front and visible from the Riverina Highway (estimated to cost approximately $250,000). DELIGHTED… Richard Janson says thank you for the award. His photograph is far right. Picture: CAROLINE STRAINIG
ALBURY Council’s decision to dispose of the historic Uiver aircraft has hit a major stumbling block in the form of a rather annoyed National Trust. The trust’s NSW branch has come out swinging after discovering the move to sell the aircraft, saying it supports possible heritage listing of the aircraft which - if it does happen – will make it hard to move the DC-2 from Albury. The trust has also emphasised the potential for fundraising to restore the plane and build a hangar through its tax-deductible appeals system, negating financial concerns as a reason for disposing of it. The trust showed it wasn’t going to be messed with after an urgent email submission to council’s general manager on 30 March failed to elicit an immediate response. Conservation manager Graham Quint subsequently emailed councillors directly on 20 April, complaining of the lack of response. “Consequently I am raising the issue directly with you, in view of the trust’s deep concerns on this issue and to ensure our position has been taken into account,” Mr Quint said in the email. He told NewsWeekly he was amazed the council had not included the plane on its own heritage list and fully investigated possible avenues of funding to restore and house it, and said the council appeared to be regarding the plane just as “any old DC-2 aircraft”. “In the trust’s view much of the state and possibly national significance of the monument relates directly to Albury,” he said. “This is more disturbing in that there appear

BOTTOM’S UP… Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is the Cancer Council’s biggest fundraiser.

Wanted: People to put the Carevan concept expands to coast kettle on for cancer cause By BLAIR THOMSON
THE Cancer Council is on a mission – to find people who can make a good cup of tea and are happy to have a group of people around at their place in aid of a good cause. The organisation is staging its biggest fundraiser – Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea – in May and the hunt is on to find hosts. Cancer Council community relations coordinator Laura Thomas said they had received good support from the Albury Wodonga region in the past and were hoping for the same again this year, if not more. “Last year saw an increase in the number of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea hosts in and around Albury and we are wanting to see more morning teas taking place this year,” Laura said. She said a breakdown on individual towns was not available but more than 800 people in the South West Region hosted a morning tea last year, which enabled Cancer Council NSW to fund research, prevention and support services including funding a large number of phone calls made from this region to the Cancer Council Helpline in 2011.
Laura said hosting a morning tea event for your family, friends or colleagues was fun and simple, and you could be as creative, unique and adventurous as you liked. “One of the the best morning teas in 2011 was held in Lavington in the form of ‘Kate Middleton’s Hen’s Party’,” Laura said. “It makes it really fun to have a theme, so we’re challenging people to think up an interesting theme this year. Could be the Olympics – with dishes from countries around the world.” However, before you start thinking scones, cream, jam, chocolate cake, profiteroles and all those calorie-high things we love to eat, think again. “We are also encouraging people to consider healthy options for their morning teas!” Laura said. The official day is on Thursday, 24 May, but hosts can put on an event any time during May. Registrations are now open and signing up is easy, simply visit www.biggestmorningtea.com. au or call 1300 65 65 85.
THE NSW Central Coast now has its own Carevan after a visit to the Border. Staff involved in getting the food van up and running on the Central Coast picked up the mini-van last week after meeting with the local Carevan team. While it’s still a few weeks away from serving food to homeless and needy people, Carevan Central Coast Committee chairman Ed McCarthy is excited to see the project getting closer to reality. “The federal government has recognised us as being one of the ten most needy areas,” he said. “We have some homeless services in the area but people require transport to get to them. “With this concept, you can travel to them and meet them after hours. “Everyone I talk to says it’s a great idea and it’s now about putting that into action.” The expansion of the food service – which will soon see a fourth van operating in Blacktown in Sydney – is not without its challenges. “We cover 2000 square kilometres,” Mr McCarthy said.
“There are a number of little communities spread around the place that find it hard to get to services. “To have a compassionate heart is something that most people have and often we just don’t know how to put wheels on that. “The Carevan concept enables people without huge amounts of skills to get out there and make a difference with a smile, a cup of tea and a coffee, to encourage people doing it tough.” Carevan CEO Jodie Tiernan said the most important theme behind the service was acceptance. “Just don’t judge ... everybody has a story to tell,” she said. “Looking at someone who’s homeless, you never know what’s happened in their life. “It’s so nice to call them by their name and try to assist them in things like getting accommodation, or just to be there to listen to what’s happened through their day. “It puts a smile on their face.” Founder Dr John Brabant hopes to expand the service nationwide.

The power to save you energy THE rising cost of electricity is hitting most Australians in the hip pocket but Planet Power have the knowledge to save people real money, now. The Albury-based business has teamed up with the Wagga store to provide true local knowledge across the region and a range of products to reduce power costs. Solar power is a big part of that but there are many other products offered by Planet Power that can help reduce energy consumption and save real dollars on your next bill. “Basically what we’re here to do is offer a total solution, not necessarily just solar,” Planet Power manager Nick Lyons said. “We look at hot water, pool pumps, LED lights, the whole range. The idea is to get the energy costs down and complement that with a solar system. “It might mean that a small solar system with hot water or LED lighting is going to get them a bigger result than just solar.” Sales representative Melissa Lowry said older residents were embracing the new technologies currently available with solar appealing to many. “It’s also something they can monitor,” she said. “Your inverter gives you information on what you’re actually generating. I have found that most customers check their inverter a fair bit. They really want to understand and see what they are pro-
ducing.” Planet Power can visit your home to give a detailed quote and advice on how to save energy and recommend a range of products, including what the current power providers are offering. Mr Lyons said this can equate to real dollar savings. “Depending on where they live and what products they currently use we’ve saved some households up to 95 percent of their bill,” he said. “In some households it’s been up to 60 percent but it all depends on the solution. They may just install LED lights or any of our range of energy-saving products which could bring their bill down by around 40 percent.” Mr Lyons said one of the more popular products had been an energy-saving device for the pool pump which doesn’t replace the power with solar but simply reduces the energy the pump draws. He said most people in the region have found they can cut back the pumps capacity and still achieve the same result for their pool, in turn saving money. If you’re looking to reduce your energy consumption but aren’t sure what steps to take or what products to choose Planet Power has a range of products on display at their Aldi Complex store to show you first hand what each can do. For more information give the team at Planet Power a call on 6021 4500.

Pooches to hit the street for RSPCA Register online for the Albury Million Paws Walk By CAROLINE STRAINIG IT’S time to get ready for one of the most important days of the year on your pooch’s social calendar – the annual Million Paws Walk. Held in locations throughout Australia on Sunday, 20 May, the walk is one of the RSPCA’s major fundraisers and an important event in helping educate pet owners. Jacinta Ducat of the Albury RSPCA, which is completely staffed by volunteers, said between 600 and 800 dog owners and their pets attended the local event, depending on the weather. “This year we are of course keeping our fingers crossed that the weather is good, so we get at least 800, Jacinta said. The walk will start at Hovell Tree Park, with a choice of one, two-anda-half and five-kilometre walks in the direction of the Gateway Village. Registration is from 9am until 11am, when the walk starts, although discounts apply for pre-event registra-
tion online. For adults it is $7 online and $10 on the day, $4/5 for children under 16, $15/20 for a family and $4/5 concession. Jacinta said the fundraiser was more important than ever, with more animals being surrendered because of the economic downturn. “More so in the past year I have noticed people are surrendering their pets because they cannot afford to pay for their food, vet bills and associated costs, she said. The Albury branch has a shop at 610 Hume Street open from 10am2pm on Thursday and Saturday but has no kennel complex, and all animals live with volunteer foster carers. At the time of writing, 15 dogs and two cats were in care looking for new homes. “We are always looking for more foster carers and at certain times of the year – especially Christmas - we have more demand than places for pets needing help, Jacinta said. “Obviously you need a secure backyard and we do do an inspection,
not just to make sure the premises are okay, but we match the volunteer with a dog that would suit them. The RSPCA provides food and pays all vet fees and incidentals – another reason fundraising is so important. In Albury’s case, donations of dog food are also desperately needed, particularly puppy food, and there are RSPCA collection points at some shopping centres and vets. The RSPCA also runs a number of lesser known programs, including emergency care for pets whose owners are in hospital or care. The Albury branch has just launched a Facebook site and is running a competition to “Make your friend our friend with prizes for the best pet Facebook page. THE organisers of an upcoming cancer fundraiser hope it will become an annual event. A small number of tickets are still available for the Albury Wodonga Cancer Services Trust Fund Gala Dinner at the Commercial Club on 18 May, with all proceeds to support the Border’s cancer treatment centre. “At the moment we’ve sold over 300 seats and tickets are still selling extremely well, show director Steve Armati said. “We’ve been able to gather up seven of the best performers in the north east from a vast array of backgrounds to star in the event. “They’re all donating their time and their talents and a top-class show will be performed as a result. The performers have all been affected by cancer in some way. “They’ve lost loved ones and cancer has had a direct impact on their lives in one way or another, Mr Armati said. “It’s basically a gala show where they do solo and duet performances, with the Murray Conservatorium, DMB Dance Studios and Wodonga Senior Secondary College bands to perform too. “We’ll have local politicians attending and groups like Brave Hearts on the Murray, Relay For Life and corporate groups have really gotten behind it.
GOOD CAUSE‌ Dale George, Steve Armati and Lyndall Withers. Mr Armati said. “It’s a good three-hour show with
meals provided and we’re encouraging people to book really soon so they don’t miss out. “And the best thing is that it all goes to a good cause. For more information call 6056 2733.

CHALLENGES… Life as a parent with a newborn can be challenging.
Miracle Babies Baby market catches on launches local nurture group VIBRANT… The Border’s Little Me Market is already proving to be a success among parents.
By work experience student CARLY WLADKOWSKI
ORGANISERS are looking forward to the next Little Me Market following the success of the last two events. Jade Tauber and Kate Rattray are the brains behind the successful boutique baby markets, which were estimated to have drawn 1000 people to Sumsion Gardens in Wodonga the two times they have been held so far. “I like to see our market as the clothes and accessories version of the farmers’ markets,” Ms Rattray said. She described their markets as an “amazing celebration of local talent”, featuring an array of products ranging from babies apparel to live music and coffee. Basing their innovative idea around the Money Tree markets of Brisbane, the busy mothers saw the need for a familyfriendly boutique baby market and have been overwhelmingly supported by eager stallholders across the Border.

The pair had received 60 applications for stalls only four days after the last markets, with Ms Tauber admitting that maintaining the small size of the markets was integral in preventing an overwhelming atmosphere for families. The key driving force behind the markets is supporting the Flutterby Foundation, a local organisation aimed at supporting victims of childhood cancer and their families. Ms Tauber, a close friend of the founder of the foundation, uses the Little Me Markets to take donations from the public and a percentage of the stallholder fee to contribute to the cause. “Money from the past two markets is going towards a coffee machine in the parents’ room inside the paediatric unit of Albury Base Hospital,” Ms Tauber said. The Little Me Markets will be held on the third Sunday of every month, with the next one on 20 May in Sumsion Gardens, from 10am to 2pm.

THE Miracle Babies Foundation - Australia’s leading organisation that supports premature and sick newborns - will be opening a NurtureGroup for Albury Wodonga families. National NurtureGroup manager Naomi Rohr said NurtureGroup offers unique support to families and carers and a forum to share similar experiences, exchange ideas on parenting, build support networks and ease the isolation that can often be felt by these families. “Life as a parent can be a challenge but rich with many wonderful moments. For parents of premature or sick newborns, this challenge begins in an intensive care unit amidst monitors, humidicribs and medical staff,” she said. “In Australia approximately 44,000 babies are born every year, requiring the help of a Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN). Around 25,000 of these babies are born premature and often without warning, and up to 1000 babies lose their fight for life. “The aim of NurtureGroup is to offer support to families and carers who have had babies admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units or Special Care Nurseries, either through prematurity or complications as a result of their birth or congenital abnormalities.” Local mother Tamara Heinjus has been instrumental in developing this service for local families. “Having spent three months in

hospital in Melbourne, returning home with the twins was bittersweet,” she said. “I felt so isolated, and was longing for a group of people with whom I could relate to. “Families that understand what we’ve been through, how emotional the journey is, and just how fragile our children are. NurtureGroup will provide a sense of belonging for those families that have had similar experiences, and gives us the support we need to cope with ongoing issues.” Albury Wodonga NurtureGroup will hold its inaugural session on Wednesday, 2 May from 10am to 12pm at Faith City Church, DeKerilleau Drive, Wodonga. All interested families and carers can RSVP by Monday, 30 April by calling 1300 773 664. The NurtureGroup is proudly supported by Educational Experience.

THE beauty of the Australian environment has been an inspiration to some of the greatest musicians of our time, and local composer Bohdan Krowicky’s Song of the Forest is no exception. The piano and voice teacher from the Murray Conservatorium produced no ordinary multimovement performance, but a combination of musical, written and visual mediums in an innovative look through Australia’s forests and their wildlife. “It’s music that requires a response,” Mr Krowicky said. “I wanted the audience to be able to visualise the scene better than just the music, so we commissioned an artist in conjunction with the Song of the Forest project which will be projected throughout the concert.” Six multi-layered artworks were created by local artist Abi Thompson, centred on poetry written by Mr Krowicky. “I asked Abi to respond to the poems as she thought best, as the music is a response of how I feel (towards the poetry),” Mr Krowicky said. But under the concepts included in Songs of the Forest lies a deeper meaning for Mr Krowicky, as he questions what music really is and why it is that we entertain with music. “My understanding is that music for entertainment is fine, but you are selling both yourself and the music short,” Mr Krowicky said. “My poems deal with this in an indirect way. The poetry has a lot to do with the way we live, and how we respond to the challenges of life.” The performance runs through a number of characters in the six movements, beginning with the forest as a whole being. Mr Krowicky develops the performance in all mediums, using Asian

Beatles bands to stop traffic By BLAIR THOMSON DEAN Street will be ringing with the music of The Beatles from next Thursday as part of an annual festival honouring the iconic band. Four groups will perform from Thursday to Sunday at the Commercial Club, Albion Hotel and Zed Bar, with the west end of of Dean Street to close to traffic on Saturday for several live sets. Cover group Rubber Soul have been invited to the festival each year since its inception in 2009. David Gillard, the “George Harrison” of the group, said the four-piece from Liverpool were way ahead of their time. “I think the band is still popular because they were such a phenomenon in both music and fashion,” he said. “They set so many trends and their songs sound as fresh as they did in the 60s. “I don’t think anyone gets sick of their music.” The members of the cover band have performed as Rubber Soul for more than a decade, and in other groups for about 25 years. “We’ve known each other for so long that we’ve got that chemistry, just like The Beatles did,” Mr Gillard said. “We create the sound of The Beatles live, which many bands can’t do … they’re cover bands. “It took years of rehearsal at first to perfect the sound, but we end up sounding just like them. “Even when we were doing original songs and covers, people would tell us that we sounded like The Beatles and it was about refining that for the group.” Using authentic instruments helps bring the band’s distinctive vibe back to life. “I’ve got an early 1960s Vox AC30 amp and an old Rickenbacker, with all instruments coming from that era,” Mr Gillard said.
GET BACK… Rubber Soul will return to Albury for the annual Beatles Festival. “People expect to see the iconic costumes and the instruments and amplifiers really create that mood. “We promise a very authentic Beatles experience.” Mr Gillard has listened to the band since he was a child. “I remember watching The Beatles’ cartoons
Presents
and they were all over the radio at the time,” he said. “I really don’t have a favourite era … I like all their tracks but we stick to the well known ones like She Loves You, Hold Your Hand, I Am the Walrus and Hey Jude.” Commercial Club CEO Bruce Duck said around 2000 people attended last year’s festival.

“And if we get a nice autumn day in Albury we’d be expecting 3000 to 4000 this time,” he said. “It’s a different and rare opportunity for people to be entertained in the main street of Albury and the first couple have been very successful. “We’d like to see lots of people come along and enjoy themselves.”

(M) “FROM THE CREATORS OF TRANSFORMERS”
BACK… Ross Noble is back on the stand-up circuit after taking a well deserved break.
Mad man of comedy By BLAIR THOMSON ROSS Noble will return to Albury next Tuesday, bringing his stream of consciousness, talkin’ bollocks style of humour with him. The Geordie comedian with the distinctive northern accent has been off the local radar for the past two years, taking a break from the relentless touring he’s undertaken over the past 20-odd years. “I stayed at home is what I did,” he told NewsWeekly. “That was the idea. “Just constantly touring ... I love doing the gigs and I love travelling, when you do it relentlessly, just keep going round, it’s quite nice to actually be in your own house for once.” Not that he’s complaining. Jumping on stage and spilling out his thoughts, unfiltered, is what he loves best. When asked about fellow comedian Jim Jefferies’ comment that touring is like manic depression – cheering and applause one moment, a quiet, isolated hotel room the next – he laughs. “What he’s failed to grasp there is that normal people, who don’t have people cheering for them, have that feeling but without all the cheering and the adula-
tion,” he chuckled. “It’s that whole kind of tears of a clown thing. “I think comics are basically not living a normal existence and I think being a comedian normalises slightly f----- up behaviour. “I love sitting in a hotel room just watching movies for ten hours and then going and doing a gig. “Brilliant. “But I think it gets to a point where you sort of need a bit of balance. “I’ve got a daughter, a three-year-old, and I think it’s not massively fair on her to be away so much.” Noble had been a permanent Australian resident, but moved back to the UK following a close call with the Black Saturday bushfires which left him unable to justify the risk of living in the bush. While the break from touring was a good chance to hang out with his family, his work ultimately came calling. “Ironically, I took the year off and went off to do a film and disappeared for a month,” he said. “I did a topical TV show, like a weekly show in the UK, and then the film is a horror film, which is out later this year, or early next year.
“It’s a horror film, but I’m kind of playing a ghost clown that comes back from the dead to wreak revenge on a load of teenagers who accidentally killed him at a teenager’s party. “Anything where a load of kids accidentally kill a clown in the opening of a film is, yeah, it’s darkly amusing,” he added with a laugh. Noble recently made his return to Australian stand up, admitting to feeling a little nervous before walking back onto the stage. Never at a loss for words, Noble freestyles most of his show, jumping from topic to topic and working along different tangents until he’s musing about something quite bizarre indeed. The recent Ross Noble Day on radio station Triple J, which saw the comedian talk for hours on end and partake in activities like playing scrabble live on air, was quite easy. “There was no heavy lifting involved,” he said. “It’s hardly working, is it, sitting in a chair talking bollocks?” Ross Noble plays at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 1 May. By BLAIR THOMSON MOVIE: Battleship (M) DURATION: 131 minutes ON PAPER, this film shouldn’t work. I mean, a movie based loosely on an old board game? Is Hollywood really so lacking in ideas? Apparently so, but cliche riddled action blockbuster Battleship works surprisingly well. Set in Hawaii, it follows members of the US and Japanese navies as they try to fight off invading aliens and their intimidating arsenal of hi-tech weaponry.
Like the spacecraft in Independence Day, the evil space invaders have an invisible, impenetrable shield around their futuristic base. Nothing can enter or exit the shield, leaving a few navy vessels stuck inside, unable to damage their enemy. Cue the dropkick-slacker-turnedaccidental-commander character Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), whose stubborn bravado and throw-out-the-rulebook approach is needed to save the day. Cue lines like “we’re all gonna die … (long pause) …. but we’re not gonna die today”, and stereotypical hero characters like the nerdy communica-
tions expert, an army guy with two fake legs, a retired navy crew waiting on an old battleship for action, all of whom spout the old action film clichés, and you’ve got a movie. And for some reason they’ve thrown Rihanna in the mix there too despite her complete lack of acting talent. It’s laughable, but it’s preposterousness makes it extremely entertaining. There’s a love story woven in too, and a “you killed my brother, now I’m gonna kill you” plot. It’s so bad in places that it’s good, and a great movie if you don’t take it at all seriously.

One-stop auto shop By TREVOR JACKSON CARSPARX has been a successful automotive electrical business on the Border for around 15 years and in their current location at the Airport Park Estate for around eight. Paul Rudd originally began the business in partnership with his father and has continued on with a new addition now onsite to ensure his customers receive the best service for their vehicle. Steve Gunton recently moved in to share the shed-space, providing mechanical service to complement Carsparx’ electrical work. “A lot of my customers come in for anything auto electrical, but they might want to get a service too,” Paul said. “Now they can get it done in the one spot and don’t have to muck around. “We concentrate on auto electrical, Steve does the mechanical side of it and it works in well.” While Carsparx cover all automotive electrical needs including alternators, starter motors, batteries and electric windows, they also offer air conditioning service.
Paul said it was important to keep your air conditioner healthy, even with the colder months approaching. “You still need your air conditioner in the winter because it de-humidifies the cabin,” Paul said. A popular job more recently has been converting vehicle headlights to high-energy discharge, or HID kits. Paul said the HID kits provided a strong white light which improved driving conditions when compared to the more yellowish halogen lights. “A lot of people struggle at night time, but you turn these on and they’re just like daylight,” Paul said. “Plus they have five to 10 times the lifespan of a normal headlight. We can do all different vehicles and it’s a lot cheaper now than it used to be.” Another part of the Carsparx service is the installation of stereo systems. “We do them properly and make sure they’re nice and neat,” Paul said. “That way you know they’re wired right and there won’t be any problems with them.”

Motoring
Albury Wodonga
Performance, style and eco-friendly By TREVOR JACKSON GLOBAL warming or not, green is here to stay. In motoring terms that means electric, or in the case of Honda’s CR-Z, hybrid vehicles. In the past hybrids have been somewhat bland in styling and performance but this little Honda has blown that theory right out of the water. A 1.5-litre petrol engine is combined with a 10-kilowatt electric motor to deliver impressive performance and economy in a very stylish pint-sized package. Sports coupes, at least in my view, should be high performance, handle like on rails, demand attention and of course be fun to drive. The CR-Z ticks most of those boxes. Performance may not be high but is certainly adequate, considering what is actually on tap. When coupled to the CVT automatic transmission and when driven in sport mode it is certainly fun, with steeringwheel-mounted paddles allowing the driver to flick through the seven ratios on offer. Normal and economy modes are also available and I found normal mode suitable for everything but a bit of fun, or to reach highway speeds in the blink of an eye. Handling is very sport-oriented and appearance-wise I noticed no shortage of attention while parked in Dean Street, or even my own carport at home. This is one attractive and distinctivelooking vehicle. The hybrid drive-train uses a combination of both power plants around town to provide plenty of commuting urge. Honda claims economy around the five litres per hundred combined but that will of course be dependant on driving habits. The vehicle I tested came complete with leather trim, glass panoramic roof, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and a stunning, sports-styled dash.
A large centre mounted tacho keeps the driver up to date with what the little hybrid is doing under the hood and the digital speedo is positioned in the centre of that. The leather-clad steering wheel contains the usual host of controls from cruise to stereo etc and a decent-size display panel houses all the required information including a sat-nav system. A reversing camera is included which is handy as visibility to the rear quarters of the vehicle is somewhat inhibited, but then this is a sports coupe. While the driver and front passenger sit on leather sports seats, leg and headroom in the rear is not really suitable for anyone but the smallest of passengers, but fold the seat flat and you have ample storage for the shopping or a decent amount of luggage for a two-up weekend getaway. And the CR-Z isn’t marketed as a family vehicle anyway. The little hybrid would ideally suit someone wanting to ‘do their bit’ for the environment and enjoy it. Out the road the enjoyment factor will be a major player in sales of the CR-Z as this is anything but a bland, ‘green’-inspired vehicle. Handling is sharp and responsive and ride is at times harsh, but always enjoyable. The road around Lake Hume on the way to Talgarno will show short-comings in any vehicle’s handling but the CR-Z took it all in its stride. I had no problems punting the little Honda through the twists, turns and bumps and always felt safe and in control. Power was plentiful and on demand, and sports mode made easy work of finding the sweet spot in the torque curve. Honda’s CR-Z certainly has the capability of changing people’s perceptions on green power but if that’s not a major factor in the purchase of your next sports coupe the CR-Z would be well worth a look anyway.
GREEN AND MEAN‌ Honda has taken green power to the next level with the CR-Z sports coupe. Vehicle supplied by Baker Motors. Pictures: TREVOR JACKSON

A touch of class and room to move overall function of the home. The master bedroom includes a walk-in robe and ensuite while the remaining three double bedrooms all include built-in robes. The main bathroom is itself very spacious with bath and shower with a separate toilet adjacent. The laundry is also of ample proportions with built-in storage. Outside an undercover verandah would easily double as a peaceful alfresco dining space with beautiful views across the surrounding hills. Access to the tidy, landscaped and well maintained back yard is also available via the double garage with a rear roller door in place. A garden shed sits high and dry on a concrete slab, offering plenty of protection for any valuable tools. Ducted heating and cooling complete the package which is ready to simply move in and enjoy.
SPACE, privacy and views are all on offer in this week’s featured family home. If room to move for a growing family is important then look no further; this well maintained, spacious home ticks all the boxes in a value-for-money property. A lead-light entry suggests a touch of class within and opens to an inviting tiled foyer. Tasteful French doors, with a splash of colour lead to an expansive living area. This features a full-length brick wall and more than enough space for all your entertainment needs, with room for a large dining suite to sit pride of place. A spacious kitchen is designed for function and style with stainless gas cook-top and electric oven. The ample bench space includes a breakfast bar and a dishwasher takes the chore out of the mundane. Here another spacious area provides for relaxed dining or family entertaining, adding to the

Property market remains flattish
Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria
Reforms urged to boost sales THE Real Estate Institute of New South Wales has called on the O’Farrell government to reform stamp duty and the state’s planning system urgently in order to stimulate the property sector. REINSW says real innovation needs to be brought to bear on two areas of government regulation that are restricting both the supply of housing as well as its affordability. To that end REINSW is calling on the NSW government to consider the introduction of a pay-as-you-go scheme for stamp duty to reduce the cost burden, especially on first homebuyers. Further, REINSW says the overall rate of stamp duty should be cut as a means of increasing state government revenues by boosting property transactions. “Housing supply and affordability are the key issues facing NSW which need to be tackled head on in the upcoming state budget,” said REINSW president Christian Payne. “Convoluted planning controls are delaying the delivery of new housing stock that is urgently needed to meet the growing demand of thousands of people flocking to live in Sydney. “As a result, housing affordability is being squeezed with many simply unable to afford their own home. “Add the significant additional burden of stamp duty to the already high price of real estate in Sydney and you have a market that is pushing the Australian dream beyond the reach of many. “It is only through innovation that we are going to make inroads into these problems. “To that end, REINSW stands ready to assist the NSW government in developing further a range of initiatives that we believe could make a real difference to housing supply and af-
THE REIV 2012 March quarter median prices show that regional Victoria property prices have remained flat over the quarter and year. The median house price in regional Victoria was $314,000, representing a minor increase of 1.3 per cent from a revised December quarter median of $310,000. This is similar to the increase of 0.9 percent recorded in metropolitan Melbourne. Demand for residential property over the past year reflected the broader state of the economy and that buyers would continue to find that prices will maintain their current levels in the short term. The property market moves in cycles and now we are in one of stability, with overall median house prices showing no real growth. The last 12 months also reflect both an easing in population growth and improvement in the supply of new homes. Of the three main regional cities, demand was strongest in Bendigo, where a 5.2 per cent improvement has caused the median house price to increase to $305,000. This is a new high for Bendigo. In Geelong demand is also stable with a 2.1 per cent increase to $385,000 and in Ballarat there was a minor reduction of 0.3 per cent to $288,000. In Mildura there was a 5.6 per cent increase over the quarter from $215,000 to $228,000. A reduction in the median was recorded in Wodonga, where the price dropped from $298,000 to $255,000 over the quarter. However, there does appear to have been a spike in prices in December because the annual reduction was a more moderate minus 4.1 percent. Until the economy and confidence improve the market is likely to remain as it is now. Buyers and sellers over the next quarter in particular will be watching interest rates.
HOME SWEET HOME… Delaying the stamp duty payments would help reduce the cost burden on buyers, the REINSW says. fordability without threatening government revenues from taxation.” Mr Payne said those initiatives included: The introduction of a pay-as-you-go stamp duty plan for first homebuyers that allows a staged payment plan of property transfer taxes over three years. This would enable payments to be staggered over time, reducing the burden of upfront stamp duty on top of a house deposit and assisting first homebuyers in a practical way. Government revenues would be protected with the stamp duty obligation guaranteed against the property in exactly the same way as unpaid land tax and council rates. Cutting the rate of stamp duty in order to increase government revenue. REINSW research shows that when property transfers taxes were cut in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, government revenues actually increased. Between 2003 and 2006, Western Australian cut property transfer duties by 0.9 per cent, yet related revenues rose by $706
·
·
million. Similarly in the Northern Territory, property transfer rates were cut by 0.45 per cent and resulted in an increase of $20 million in related revenue – a rise of 20 per cent. Urgent reform of planning controls. There is an urgent need for planning controls to be reformed in order to reduce red tape and costs, as well as providing greater certainty for developers. Housing supply is failing to meet existing demand and this problem will only be further exacerbated as more and more people move to Sydney. “The problems of housing supply and affordability are fast becoming entrenched in NSW,” Mr Payne said. “There is a real opportunity now to deliver innovative solutions that will not only increase government revenues, but will bring the Great Australian dream back into the reach of many thousands of young first homebuyers in NSW. “REINSW is ready, willing and able to work closely with the O’Farrell government in further developing these proposals.”

Anything can happen Simon
Says with SIMON CORR OK, YES, it’s official - you can definitely expect the unexpected. Last weekend’s Ovens & Murray results confirmed anything can and will happen (Anzac Day matches happened after we went to print). Wangaratta were the latest exponents of this theory when they went totally against the grain to defeat punters’ early premiership favourites in Lavington. In the past two weeks the Magpies have squandered match-winning leads to be defeated at the final hour. Against Albury they let a nine-goal lead go by and were again overrun a week later by North Albury. These two results had experts (or so called) questioning Wangaratta’s mental resolve and indicated they were not even a slim chance to match it with the Panthers............but they did and ran out winners by 32 points! Corowa Rutherglen also upset the apple cart by knocking over Myrtleford, the team that a week earlier had conquered the Giant in Albury. What on earth is going on. A lot of people are starting to question their sanity, and this was even before the Anzac Day games! Our Fev One thing that was predictable last weekend was that Brendan Fevola would put on a show. After missing the previous week with a suspension and a dance routine to perfect, Fev was back in action with his first official appearance in his adopted home of Yarrawonga. A massive crowd turned out including our own local cricket team St Pat’s, who were sporting a pink “Fev’s security team trip away T-shirt. Brendan and his Pigeons took on a previously undefeated Wangaratta Rovers, and not surprisingly he got all the attention. In a crowd of nearly 3000, almost half of them crammed in behind the goals that Fev was kicking too, not unlike the stories you heard coming from Windy Hill in John Coleman’s era. Fev took a couple of hangers, got in a fight, high-fived the crowd and kicked four goals and eight points in an uncharacteristically wayward display. And this was after three hours of dance training in the morning! When the game concluded his victorious team mates patiently waited as Brendan did a radio interview, posed for photos with kids and spoke to fans. The town and the fans are besotted by the former Coleman medallist. At the gate they sell memorabilia and memberships and kids walk around proudly in guernseys
sporting the number 25. After witnessing the whole experience first-hand I can emphatically say that Brendan Fevola is great for our game. Sure it might be all about him, sure at times some other clubs and players may not get the attention they deserve, but the crowds are coming, people are talking and I for one can’t wait to cover another game he is in. Myrtleford v Yarrawonga Round four of the Ovens & Murray is in fact a split round (not unlike most of our tipping ) spread over two weekends. The only game in action this Saturday again involves that man Brendan Fevola. The Myrtleford football club have in fact paid Brendan to appear against them. It is a decision that will most likely snuff out any possible chance the Saints had of victory, but it will ensure plenty of dollars into the coffers and give the kids from the Ovens area the opportunity to witness up close a former AFL great. The Saints came back to reality last week and will find it impossible to curve the influence of Craig Ednie, Michael Stevens and Nick Lawless in the midfield. The Pigeons also have the luxury of playing O&M forward Marcus McMillan in defence and his has proven to be a rock of Gibraltar down back in the past couple of games. Yarrawonga by 47 points. It’s hard enough to pick week by week but here are my other selections for the remainder of the round played out on 5 May.

Midnight basketball tips off Call goes out for more players By TREVOR JACKSON
NO WORKSHOP, NO JUMPSHOT… Maddison Hayes, 12, Tea Galbraith, 13, Zach Nugent, 15, and Cody Nugent, 13, are all looking forward to the new season of Midnight Basketball. Picture: TREVOR JACKSON
MIDNIGHT Basketball tips off again next week and young people between the ages 12 and 18 are urged to apply. The eight-week tournaments have been running on the Border for the last two years, providing children who may not normally have the chance to participate in organised sport the opportunity to do so. Children are transported to the venue, given a healthy meal, a life-skill workshop and take to the court to strut their stuff. The program’s moto of No Workshop, No Jumpshot ensures the children are disciplined in a team environment and according to committee member Phil Thorneycroft the program was achieving its goals. “We teach the kids team skills and we teach them drills to participate in active sport,” he said. “Hopefully what we do is achieve some organised sport for them on a regular basis. “One of the outcomes is that if there are kids who want to take up regular sport and
they have barriers, we actually get them there.” Mr Thorneycroft said the tournament had taken its place in the community with a good volunteer base and was now committed to the next two years. “We’ve always had a good volunteer base but as far as getting to know the kids and getting a structure for the program, I think it’s come a long way,” he said. “The kids are really enjoying the way it’s settled down now. We’ve got a good tournament management team and I think that’s instilled discipline. “We’re always looking for coaches or support coaches because what we want to do is provide regularity and consistency but sometimes that doesn’t always happen. We want the kids to get to know those involved.” The program is currently visiting major high schools in the region to put the message out there of the 4 May tip off. Those interested in the program can go online and visit the Midnight Basketball website to register.
Revved up for an exhausting day By TREVOR JACKSON TOTALLY Exhausted’s sixth Dyno Day and Show ‘n’ Shine will be held this Saturday, 28 April, and is set to be bigger and better than ever. After strong growth over the previous five years, organisers Kim and Dean Hargraves said they had added a little extra this year to keep the girls happy with a fashion parade by Parody Petals and live music from Elissa Van Dorst and Concealed Aggression. “Dean started it six years ago and we probably had 100 people come down,” Ms Hargraves said. “It’s slowly built up and last year we had over 1100 people through the gate. That was enormous and exceeded
our expectations so this year I want to crack 1500.” Ms Hargraves said the day had gained a good reputation among both the community and the police with no major dramas reported, even with the recent addition of a liquor licence. She said the day had “a good vibe” and she described it as “a fun party atmosphere”. Much of that fun is reflected in the fact that the event continues to grow despite the dyno not having a competitive nature. Ms Hargraves said the idea of the dyno day was for people to bring their cars along, put them on the dyno and see how they perform with no need to out-perform another vehicle, but she said the vehicles still created a great atmosphere with the
crowd cheering as the horsepower figures show up in graph form on big screens. “People like to hear a noisy car on the dyno and they like to see high figures in horsepower,” she said. “The way the crowd responds to high numbers is fantastic with yelling and clapping and cheering.” Trophies are on offer for the Show ‘n’ shine section and a raffle will be conducted throughout the day with proceeds going to the MS Society. Entries are taken on the day and spectators are welcome with a $10 entry fee for adults and under 14s admitted free. For more information go to www.totallyexhausted.com.au
