Commercial Club defies doom and gloom with biggest-ever profit
Making millions By CAROLINE STRAINIG WHILE many Border businesses are complaining about reduced profits because of the economic situation, one of the region’s most proactive clubs is on track for a multi-million-dollar profit. Albury Commercial Club president Barry Edmunds said he expected the club would make close to a $4m profit for the 2011-2012 financial year. “It is tough times for the econony, but amazingly our club is going ahead in leaps and bounds,” he told NewsWeekly. “I don’t think I have seen our club
in a more healthy position and trade so strong. In fact, this year ending 30 June we will show the greatest profit we have ever had in our life. We should go very close to $4m.” Mr Edmunds added the profits had nothing to do with patrons spending more drinking and gambling away their sorrows because of the economic downturn, but simply “doing what we do better than anyone else”. “Our security is fabulous and our service is unbelieveable,” he said. “In my opinion it’s the best service of any hospitality industry I have been in in NSW. You wouldn’t believe the
number of people who comment on that.” The club president for the past seven years, Mr Edmunds attributed part of the success to an outstanding management team with diverse board members who worked well together. “We are always forward planning. At the moment we are putting in a brand-new lift, which may not sound a huge thing, but it is badly needed,” he said. “We are also developing a new conference room on the ground floor, extending the snooker room and hope to build an outdoor-indoor restaurant
within the next 12 months.” In terms of opportunities going begging for the region as a whole, Mr Edmunds thought more mega events to attract tourism were badly needed. “For example, the club sponsors the Albury Gold Cup, which is huge – probably the biggest country cup in Australia. The amount of people that generates is unbelievable and poundfor-pound that is probably our biggest weekend of the year,” he said.. “We need more attractions like that. Festivals like Bright is doing and things like that to make people come here.”
Mr Edmunds made his comments in an interview at a Rotary meeting in Albury on Tuesday evening, where he was the guest speaker. Other topics he went on to cover in his speech included football (he is a past Albury coach) and St Vincent de Paul, where he is a regular volunteer. Established in 1903, the Commercial Club is situated in Dean Street right in the centre of Albury. Attractions include Keno, two TABs, poker machines, several restaurants, six bars and lounges, multiple conference rooms, bottle sales and sporting facilities.

THE region’s main dog club will be celebrating an extraspecial milestone this weekend, with the Albury & Border Kennel Club staging its 75th annual show on Sunday. Long-time kennel club member Merrilee Brookes said the anniversary milestone would bring back a lot of memories. “I am not sure how we’ll celebrate, but we’ll have to do something, she said. “I don’t drink, but I know some of my girlfriends do and I’m sure they’ll be having the odd celebratory drink during the day. Merrilee will be competing with her bitch, officially known as Australian Champion Appintiki Gypsy Rose Lea, a clumber spaniel, a rear breed which originated in the UK. The competition will kick of from 9am and run until 3 or 4pm in the afternoon, with hundreds of purebred pedigree dogs competing in the conformation section. A separate obedience trial will take place on the same day in which dogs will compete at five different levels. Saturday will also be a busy day at the club grounds in North Street, because the club is helping host another event, the Corowa and District Kennel Club show and obedience trial, which will be almost identical

IF YOU chat to local business people in Albury Wodonga one theme keeps coming through: rest on your laurels at your peril. Like Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, business owners have to move with the times or be left by the wayside. It’s no good continuing doing something just because it has always worked in the past. We live in a time of too rapid change. One of the main purposes of the Business, Manufacturing and Innovation Festival which kicks off in Albury this Monday is to give business owners the tools and knowledge they need so they can work out a proactive plan for their business. There are several relevant speakers but one in particular stands out, Mike Boyle, whose session is on Friday 11 May. Mike, who describes himself as a “sales scientist, will talk about how to create ideas and innovation to boost sales, production, profit and growth during challenging times. This is a must for any proactive business owner. As he says in his promotional flier, it is well known that some of the greatest companies we know today were created by innovative thinking during recession, depression or very challenging times. The key is a creative culture that explores innovative approaches to business success. Here’s hoping he can inspire more local business owners to do just that, and unlock the doors to the many profitable opportunities that still lie out there even in these tough economic times. Visit www.bmifestival.com.au for more information on this and the other festival events.

TWO local organisations have adopted a let’s-get-in-thereand-do-it approach to fixing cross-border issues. Far from sitting back and waiting for new Cross Border Commissioner Steve Toms to work his magic, the Albury Northside Chamber of Commerce and NSW Business Chamber have decided to sift through the issues and come up with ways of fixing them. They will then pass their suggestions back to the commissioner. The hope is that by
and look for those that we think could be resolved in six to 12 months. Obviously those that need to go back to both state governments to fix are beyond our ability to fix so we won’t focus on those. “We may need to actually go back to some of the businesses who have raised issues and investigate them in more detail. “The project will be ongoing, but we would like to have identified something within the next couple of months that we can start working on.
suggesting solutions as well as problems some issues can be addressed sooner. Albury chamber business manager Kerryn Arnold said the chambers decided last week on the proactive approach, following a public forum and a meeting with the commissioner in Albury. “The public forum was very well attended and there were a lot of issues chamber members raised, such as licensing for builders and payroll tax, she said. “What we are going to do is examine each of the issues

Coming soon to a town near you Wireless broadband areas named By CAROLINE STRAINIG THE much hyped National Broadband Network is coming soon to a town near you – in fact, more than 50 towns or areas across the Border. The company building Australia’s National Broadband Network, NBN Co, earlier this week unveiled the locations in north-east Victoria and southern NSW which will receive high-speed fixed wireless broadband. The fixed wireless network will be switched on from mid-2015, delivering high-speed broadband to homes and businesses at speeds up to 150 times faster than dial-up. Speaking during a promotional tour, NBN Co stakeholder relations advisor Tony Gibbs said NBN planned to deliver high-speed broadband to every Australian with one network utilising three technologies: fibre, fixed wireless and satellite. He said fibre-optic cable would be installed in towns of 1000 premises or more, or where a town of 500 premises or more was located on a transit link. Communities with low population density where it was impractical or uneconomical to roll out fibre-optic cable would get the fixed wireless and satellite network. He said the fixed wireless list included 51 towns in the Albury Wodonga region.
Mr Gibbs said the announcement was tremendous news for these communities, many of which had little or no access to high-speed broadband. “Faster, more reliable internet will deliver speeds and services city people take for granted. It will also mean telehealth consultations, video conferencing, interactive lessons and live collaboration with teachers and students here and abroad can become a reality, he said. The following towns will get fixed wireless broadband: VIC: Allans Flat, Barnawartha, Bellbridge, Benambra, Bethanga, Bundalong, Dederang, Ebden, Eldorado, Everton, Glenrowan, Kiewa, Milawa, Moyu, Omeo, Oxley, Peechelba, Springhurst, Stanley, Strathmerton, Tungamah, Wandiligong, Yackandandah. NSW: Berrigan, Jindera, Khancoban, Oaklands, Table Top, Urana, Walla. Surrounding areas of towns which will get fixed wireless: VIC: Wodonga, Baranduda, Beechworth, Chiltern, Cobram, Corryong, Mt Beauty, Myrtleford, Rutherglen, Wangaratta. NSW: Albury, Corowa, Culcairn, Deniliquin, Finley, Howlong, Thurgoona, Tocumwal, Tumbarumba. For more information visit www. nbnco.com.au

Three charged over drug haul By BLAIR THOMSON WODONGA police officers made one of their biggest drug seizures in recent memory last Friday with two kilograms of methamphetamine discovered in a car on the Hume Highway. Three people have been charged over the haul, which Sgt Ray Causer said had a street value between $500,000 and $700,000. “It’s a very substantial amount, he said. “If you work on gram deals, that’s 2000 deals that are not going to make it to the street. “This could have also been cut with other substances to increase its volume which would then increase its value. Sgt Causer said the drugs were found in a southboundfacing car on the highway but wasn’t sure where the trio were heading.
The drugs had been sent to Melbourne for testing and will be destroyed at the end of the court process. “This would be one of the largest drug busts in years ‌ I’ve been here since 2001 and I can’t recall anything as large as this in the past,â€? he said. “It’s gratifying to remove a substantial amount of drugs from the community, good to get it off the street. “If you can prevent addicts from having a ready supply it will hopefully make them attend drug and alcohol counselling and go to rehab.â€? Sgt Causer said there had been a huge increase in demand for methamphetamine and amphetamine in Wodonga in recent years. “We weren’t seeing this drug (methamphetamine) in existence when I started here,â€? he said. “Amphetamines and ice, as it is commonly known,
NBN can benefit them and

Homes targeted in fire attacks By BLAIR THOMSON POLICE on both sides of the Border are seeking information over separate arson attacks. Wodonga police are investigating a deliberately lit fire in Templeton Court which started last Friday morning in a housing commission unit. Albury police are also investigating a suspicious fire which started early Tuesday morning at a housing commission home in Curlew Crescent. Both houses were occupied by 18-year-old males who weren’t home at the time, with nobody injured in the fires. Neighbours to the Wodonga fire were reluctant to talk to NewsWeekly, but one said the housing department “should have a good look at itself”, but wouldn’t elaborate. Both homes sustained smoke and water damage. Det Snr Const Brendan Roache from Wodonga police said no-one had been questioned over the fire,

By CAROLINE STRAINIG THE death of two beagles in horrific circumstances has touched hearts with donations topping up the reward for information leading to the arrest of their killer flooding in. The dogs – said to be happy, friendly youngsters which did not bark excessively – were found strangled to death by their owner Mitch in a Lavington garage on Friday 13 April, suspended by their collars and leads from a metal beam. Subsequent police investigations had failed to identify the perpetrator at the time of going to press.
1032048-JL18-12
A Facebook page set up by their owner dedicated to “Justice for Bella and Jasper” has had almost 4000 “Likes” recorded, with the general sentiment one of great sadness and anger. The reward stood at more than $1700 earlier this week, according to that page. A fairly typical comment posted was: “This is soo sad… the people that did this should be put to death the same way!” Among the latest to make a donation was the Albury Citizens and Ratepayers Movement, whose president, John Emmery, was so touched by the animals’ death he donated $200.
SADDENED… Ratepayer boss John Emmery has added $200 to the reward. Picture: CAROLINE STRAINIG “I’m doing this off my own bat. I’m sure the association committee will agree, but if not I’ll pay it myself,” he said. “This is a hideous thing and the person needs to be caught.” Mr Emmery said the killings
had shocked people, and made pet owners afraid to let their dogs out or leave them at home unattended in plain visibility from the street. Anyone with any information about the killings should call police or Crime Stoppers.

QBE closes doors
Demolition starts on mill
By BLAIR THOMSON QBE Insurance will close its Albury office at the end of the month with 12 staff to lose their jobs. The workers compensation office in Swift Street is the victim of consolidation, with letters sent to customers advising them of the closure. Staff will have to relocate to Bendigo, Shepparton, Wollongong and Canberra, with all offered positions in those locations. Local workers wouldn’t speak to NewsWeekly, but a QBE spokesman said the decision to close the branch was made after “careful consideration and review”. It is believed the company has been adversely affected by compensation claims made following recent natural disasters. Shares in the company declined

Pictures: BLAIR THOMSON site was available at a cost of $1.6m, but now says there is no price set. The site had been considered for the new Australian Taxation Office building currently under construction on Smollett Street and several potential buyers had inspected it. But fitting a new business in with the layout of the building was problematic and the cost of clearing the site a stumbling block. “At the end of the day, people are entitled to make their living out of what they want to do with sites, and if something can’t be preserved then something more modern seems to be the way to replace it,” Mr Wooding said.

DEMOLITION of the Allied Mills buildings in Albury has begun - with the aim of making the site more attractive to a developer. The Young Street flour mill has been attacked by vandals since its closure more than three years ago, with glass, paperwork and smashed furniture littered throughout the building. Copper wiring and other metals have also been stolen from the graffiticovered site, which opened for business a century ago. Asbestos was removed from the area last week with a Melbourne demolition team working over the next eight to 12 weeks to clear the structures, which will be sold as scrap metal. Rather than being pulled down in one go, the aging solos will be carefully removed. Albury and District Historical Society vice president Joe Wooding said it was sad to see the mill go, but said there would be a new history developed on the site. “From a purely financial point of view, there’s very little you could do with flour mills,” he said. “At the end of the day, the mighty dollar is what it’s all about. “It’s the world we live in. “While it’s something that’s been iconic here for 100 years, life moves on. “There is quite a bit of history there but the site’s obviously been neglected.” The site is zoned for mixed used with 3700sqm of freehold and 9600sqm of leasehold land. Kel Barclay from Stanley & Martin had previously told NewsWeekly the
from December 2011, dropping sharply at the start of the year and made a rebound in March. The spokesperson said QBE remained “committed to regional areas and to ensuring brokers, policyholders and injured workers continue to receive consistent and high levels of service and support”. Staff have already started packing boxes at the building. Medicare’s office in Dean Street will also close today. The service will operate from Centrelink at 430 Wilson Street from Monday with reduced trading hours as part of government cost-cutting measures. The Dean Street service had operated from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday, but will now be open 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

State-of-the-art imaging at X-Ray Group THE X-RAY Group has all your imaging needs covered. With four locations at the Garden’s Medical Group, Albury Base Hospital, Wagga Road Lavington and Rowan Street Wangaratta, the group offers X-ray, ultrasound, CT scans, biopsies, MRI scans, mammograms, dental X-rays and more. X-ray Group general manager Wayne Ashton said the new Lavington service had been busy since its opening. “It’s the next step forward as far as our services go,” he said. “At the moment we offer X-ray and ultrasounds there, but there’s a room and space for future CT scanning services. “We’d like to invite everyone to come and try our services and see what they think.” The Lavington service uses the latest technology. “The X-ray machine is a stateof-the-art digital radiography system which gives patients the lowest possible dose and the highest quality imaging,” Mr Ashton explained. “It’s just been released and it’s a fantastic unit. “We’ve worked really hard at keeping the patient dose to a minimum while keeping the image the best possible, which is what this system does.” The ultrasound machine is equally impressive. “We’ve got a Phillips IU22 which is the latest technology,” Mr Ashton said.
“It has 3D, which is where you can see 3D images, and 4D, which is where you can see 3D images in real time. “The picture quality is very good and the staff are happy to use it.” The business offers services with no out-of-pocket expense. “Everything at Lavington, and all the sites, is bulk-billed,” Mr Ashton said. “There’s no out-of-pocket fee for all Medicare-eligible examinations. “We get referrals from doctors, GPs, specialists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, dentists, orthodontists … a whole range of specialities, meaning we offer services to a wide range of people.” Ease of access and customer service are important at The X-ray Group. “Our focus is to provide the best customer service we can across all four sites,” Mr Ashton said. “It’s a good, friendly atmosphere with a cost-effective service.” Mr Ashton said having adequate car parking space meant patients didn’t have to walk a long way to the service. “They don’t have to worry about parking, which is a big issue,” he said. “People can bring any referral with them. “Again, we’d just like to invite people to try our service and see what they think.”

Albury station to be repaired
TIRED BUT HAPPY‌ From left to right Janene Knobel, Erin Hilton, Matthew Little and Shara Knobel.
Walking to help others ALBURY-WODONGA’S local entry in the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km walk, the Camino Largo team, says there is still time to donate to their fundraising if you’d like to help them – and a good cause – at the same time. “You can donate until the end of May, team member Shara Knobel said. The team, a mixture of police and teachers, completed the walk from Wheelers Hill to Wesburn in the Dandenongs on the weekend of 20-22 April in just over 26 hours, with the only side-effect some tired
and weary limbs and a few blisters. Shara said they were delighted in the achievement, all the more notable because they were first-timers and some of the original team members dropped out in the lead up to the event and were replaced. “Thanks must also go to our helpers, Chris and Liz, who were there at every support stop, she said. Fundraising currently stands at around $2000. Donations can be made online until the end of May. For more information visit www.trailwalker.oxfam.org.au
THE Albury Railway Station will get some extensive and much needed repairs later this year. Albury MP Greg Aplin said the station was set to benefit from improvements under the Transport Access Program. “The Transport Access Program is a new NSW government initiative to deliver accessible, modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure where it is needed most, he said. “Extensive and much needed repairs will be undertaken to the roof of the station to improve the appearance of the iconic building and to fix leaks. “It is good news the NSW government is undertaking these repairs at Albury Station, which is a local icon and one of the finest examples of a rural station in the country. “Making sure our transport infrastructure is up to standard is important for local customers who use this station and coach interchange. Mr Aplin said tenders were being called for the project, with construction expected to commence mid-year. Albury station was opened on 3 February 1881, coinciding with the opening of the Albury extension of the Great Southern Line from Sydney. At that time the Victorian line was complete as far as Wodonga, and a trip between Sydney and Melbourne required a coach connection to cross the Murray River.

New-look church wins praise all round WODONGA’S new-look St Stephen’s Church has been officially opened and dedicated after a $750,000 new extension and refurbishment. Uniting Church moderator Isabel Thomas Dobson of the church’s Victoria and Tasmania synod performed the honours at a special service on Sunday afternoon, followed by a community breakfast on Monday. “The redevelopment has been designed to accommodate the expanding mission of the congregation and UnitingCare Wodonga, church council chairperson Adrienne Dyall said. “Our facilities constructed in 1982 were unable to support the growth of our present and future ministry. “As a congregation and agency we are very excited to move into a new purpose-built facil-
ity containing specialist interview and meeting rooms, a welcoming reception/hospitality area and new office space to accommodate staff and volunteers. The project included a new opportunity shop and toilet facility as well as new floor coverings across the entire building, with everyone at the breakfast praising the new and improved facilities. More than $70,000 was raised locally towards the project, with the balance coming from a longterm loan from the Uniting Church. Services offered by UnitingCare include emergency relief, counselling (pastoral and financial), interest-free loans, cooking, social and gardening groups and a food share centre. Church services are held every Sunday.
Board chairperson Ian Bedford is pictured with the Rev Rachel Franklin and moderator Isabel Thomas Dobson with the plaque commemorating the project, which will be installed in the foyer in due course. The new extension is on the right of the picture. Picture: CAROLINE STRAINIG
IF THE look and feel of a beautifully handcrafted wood item sends you into a spin, you’ll find plenty to excite your senses at the Arts Space Wodonga. More than 80 locally crafted wood items from members of the Albury-Wodonga Woodcrafters Club are on display at the galley until 19 May, with techniques ranging from wood turning through to scroll sawing, pyrography, carving, furniture, toy making and box making. A variety of wood is used, almost all recycled or salvaged, with red gum and camphor laurel the most popular. Albury-Wodonga Woodcrafters president Doug Malsem said the exhibition was a great way of showcasing local woodcrafting talent. “We have a very strong community of woodcrafters here in the region with about 150 members meeting regularly at our workshop at Gateway Village since 1987, he said. “By exhibiting some of these pieces at Arts Space Wodonga, we will be able to share our craft with a different audience. The Albury-Wodonga Woodcrafters Club is located at Gateway Village and some of their wares can be purchased from the Wodonga Visitor Information Centre (open seven days a week). The club has a workshop open every day except Sunday and Thursday, and new members – including learners – are welcome. “You don’t have to be good. We get a lot of learners who have an interest in doing something with wood and we welcome with open arms, Mr Malsem said. Music streaming The product that impacted around the globe was music streaming. Australia has a number of players with SongL and JB HiFi offering free trial periods. Spotify, the largest library of music, is rumoured to arrive in Australia late this year. The wireless system called airplay for iPods, iPhones and iPads, will allow the stored music to talk wirelessly to your sound system. Try the onemonth free trials.
Internet radio While this has been around for some time, we are now finding some stations making navigation easier. My tip: go to www.aupedeo.com as an excellent example.
Projectors When 65 LCD TVs hit the market some felt this could be the death knell of the projector. Nevertheless,
3D changed that, even though 3D is a little underwhelming on a TV panel. My tip: check out some of the quality 3D projectors prior to committing to a large panel.
Integration For the integration of all the disc products specialised units at the premium end used to be the way to go. The past year has seen a rapid improvement in pricing of the premium single all-format disc players to the point of rivalling the price of the better quality CD players. On the subject of affordability, many of the audiophile people have had the frustration of putting the LP record to hard drive with mixed success or with the requirement of many products to make it sound great on the good sound system (possibly why turntable sales are still good). We are now having products as an all-in-one that can wirelessly talk to the computer for your music, internet radio, stream your subscription music, play 24bit music files through a USB stick and play through a DAC (digital to analogue converter) for superb sound in one box.
Television in 2012 Models are all just appearing with the trend to mimic the application offering of the Smartphones. My tip: if the primary use is still a television, look carefully at the picture quality and never buy a television without hearing it at a good volume level.
A BORDER organisation which connects volunteers with community groups has placed more than 1700 people in the past year – but says that’s just the tip of the iceberg and more volunteers are needed. “We have more than 100 not-forprofit organisations on our books ranging from the SES to aged care and if you asked me if there is an area of demand we have trouble filling, I’d say all of them, Lindee Clarke of the Albury Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau said. “Seriously, if you are a barista I can place you, if you are roof tiler, I can place you, if you are a quilter, musician or a demon chess player I can place you! We have demand for just about everything you can imagine. “I couldn’t put an exact number on vacancies because I just send people along until I’m told they don’t need any more volunteers, but the demand is always there. Lindee, who has worked for five years as an administration coordinator for the federal, state and council-funded bureau, spends much of her time interviewing volunteers and matching them up with suitable organisations. “Sometimes the work is connected with the person’s past work or a hobby, but other times it is not because the person wants to do something totally different, she said. “Some people also have to do volunteer work as part of a Centrelink requirement for Newstart. “We get a whole range of people. From students who need to do volunteer work as part of a course to those between jobs and retirees. Jobs include anything from admin to environmental work, with particular demand in the aged-care sector. THE latest twist in Albury’s Buddhist temple saga has a definite piggy smell to it. As if the financial woes of the original operators and repeated thefts of equipment were not enough, the temple grounds were recently invaded by some unwelcome and messy neighbours. The monk in charge of the Abercorn Street temple, Ajahn Satit, arrived to conduct a service to find not a burglary, but a greeting party of six pigs which had escaped from next door. He said the pigs caused damage to the lawn and the playground and their noise was an unwelcome intrusion during meditation. The pigs’ owner’s wife later saw them there and lured them home with a piece of bread. Ajahn Satit thought they might have been let out as a joke, but their owner says that was far from the case. “For a start, they churned up my own front garden too and are much too hard to round up , the person in question, Mita Pauljevic, said. He said the pigs’ roving days were hopefully over because he had since found and strengthened the weak area in his fence they forced their way under.

EVERY year the Albury Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau stages a breakfast or lunch as part of National Volunteers Week to thank local volunteers, and this year is no exception. As part of the week,, which will run from 14-20 May, on Tuesday 15 May, there will be a lunch at Woodland Gove in Wondonga from 11.30am to 1pm, and on Thursday 17 May a free breakfast at Mirambeena Community Centre in North Albury from 8.30am-10am. “Over previous years we have just done a breakfast or a lunch and some people have missed out because they were working, so this year, we decided to do a breakfast and a lunch, Lindee said. The move seems to have paid up because early indications from email RSVPs are that they will exceed the 200/250 or so who have attended a function in past years. The bureau is looking for gift donations for little presents to give as door prizes and free gifts. “If there are businesses out there who have some stuff they’d be prepared to donate – from pens to vouchers for a free coffee – please do get in touch, Lindee said.

MAY usually signals the time for the 2012 offering of new models, as well as the successful products of 2011 start to emerge. The products that won the day included the iPad and iPhone, which forged ahead. People now use them to run sound systems, television sets, automate your home -the list is limited only to your imagination. This will see some solid challenges from the competition. We will have to wait to see how successful they will be. My tip is Apple will still dominate.

New spin on favourite old songs from Campbell By BLAIR THOMSON
(MA 15+)
(MA 15+)
(M)
(G)
NOW SHOWING: Thu 03.05.12 to Wed 09.05.12
DAVID Campbell returns to the Border with a setlist of songs that inspired him during his formative years. Born in the early 70s, the singer’s teenage days were spent listening to tracks like Come on Eileen, Tainted Love and I’m Your Man. While the era signalled a change in the singer’s musical tastes, there were many other changes happening in his young life. It was during the 80s that he discovered his father was rock icon Jimmy Barnes, having been raised by his grandmother. “It was kind of a tumultuous time, but a time when I went head-first into music as salvation,” he told NewsWeekly. “Music got me through it. “And this show is music from that period, the New Romantic time. “I just thought there was a great part of song-writing that people don’t talk about much.” Cover versions of his favourite 80s songs are contained on his latest album, Let’s Go, released last year. Particular tracks elicit certain memories and emotions in Campbell, transporting him straight back to the time in which he listened to them. “Certain songs have certain memories for me, or certain desires or wishes and I think that I’m trying to relate that to other people,” he said. “I think a lot of people feel the same way. “We spent a month in the studio sort of workshopping around 30 or 40 songs, seeing what songs would fit, what era, how we would take on the era and what suited my style. “The songs are rearranged and given a live feel.” Campbell shares his thoughts on what the songs mean to him with his audience, labelling it a “very personal show”. “The music is very contagious,” he said. “What’s not to love about that decade?” While having a famous father has certainly opened doors for Campbell, he tries not to trade off his popularity. “I’ve certainly strived over the last 19 years to be my own man,” he said. “I think people accept that now and like the fact that I’m different to Jimmy. “Sometimes vocally and genetically we cross over but I’m mainly independent from him.” But there’s no denying the Cold Chisel front-man has given Campbell a few pointers along the way. “He’s definitely been an influence, even on me wanting to be in the industry,” he said.
SONGS FROM THE HEART… David Campbell will perform songs that inspired him during his formative years during Saturday night’s Albury gig. “Not just for me, but for a lot of performers out there. “When you didn’t really feel like you had a lot to live for he sort of went there’s this option that you can make a career out of. “He made it seem like an achievable thing. “He was aspirational, and even with Cold Chisel now he’s aspirational in that he says yes you can keep going in your 40s and 50s, and you can still be viable. “He’s given me advice like sing from your heart, very simple things, but he
never interfered to be that overbearing parent.” While his father has largely stuck to music, Campbell has branched out into stage performance and is currently presents a morning television show. “It’s great to have a change in life, something different,” he said. David Campbell will perform with his band at the Albury Entertainment Centre tomorrow night (5 May). For more information call 6051 3051.

The Avengers By BLAIR THOMSON MOVIE: The Avengers (M) DURATION: 142 minutes MARVEL’S latest superhero action blockbuster starts with a huge, exciting bang, and slowly fizzles out over the next two-plus hours. Created with an estimated budget of $220m – that’s about $1.5m for each minute of screen time – it brings together several characters from comicbook-turned-film franchises, as they battle against evil extra-terrestrial enemies. The activation of the Tesseract, an
experimental and volatile source of unlimited energy, has opened a space portal allowing the evil destructioneers to come to Earth in an attempt to destroy it. Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America and other fighters are deployed to retrieve the stolen Tesseract from Loki, Thor’s evil adopted brother. But that’s no easy task, obviously. Cue what feels like never ending battle scenes with almost everything in sight getting smashed to bits with a mix of impressive CGI and real world sets.
Visually, it’s awesome. But after watching battle after battle, the wow-factor of seeing a giant space vessel or building getting destroyed in stunning detail has long worn off. The creators have tried to inject some humour into the script, mainly through Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, but it didn’t work for me, nor did the tedious dialogue which is also stretched out unnecessarily. It’s true that this film has been very well received by both critics and the general public. But for me, it completely misses the mark.

wrapping paper and some dayspecific gifts to choose from, including different coloured photo frames and notebooks with nice messages such as “I love my mum” and bright coloured candles with writing on the glass holder. Other popular presents include chocolates, porcelain
jewellery hangers (a figurine of a lady with hooks to hang your jewellery on top), wind chimes, clocks and hanging crystals. “If you hang the crystals near a window, the sun strikes them and they look lovely – some of them have angels,” Helen said. Soap, liquid soap and hand creams – most Australian made – are another option, as are bunches of dried flowers, which are purchased for both a happy and a sad reason. “Some people prefer these to fresh flowers because they last and are a lasting memory,” Helen said. “Touchingly but sadly, they also make a lovely tribute on a grave, and many people buy them for this.” Simple Indulgence is located in the Birallee Shopping Centre, Melrose Drive, Wodonga, phone 6059 2600. Pop in and see Helen – she’s sure to be able to help you find something just right for your mum. 1031878-KS18-11
FINDING that perfect Mother’s Day gift can be hard, but there’s one local business that does its best to make it simple. Simple Indulgence, whose motto is “Gifts with a difference”, stocks a whole range of products ranging from a $2 cake of soap up to African figurines costing almost $100, although the majority are towards the lower end of the scale. Owner Helen Goldsworthy, who has owned the store for 13 years, does all her own buying and prides herself on stocking affordable, good value gifts that people will enjoy giving and receiving. The word from those who have shopped there is that even if you don’t know what you are looking for, you are sure to find it at Simple Indulgence because there are so many clever and eye-catching gifts to choose from, with something to suit every budget. Homes&Property Homes Property ❯❯ Albury Wodonga
Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria
Regions beat city in rental stakes THE rental vacancy rate for Melbourne in March was 2.3 per cent, a slight easing compared to the two per cent recorded in December. For the first time since 2005 the rate has been above two per cent for 10 consecutive months. The level of vacant properties
is reasonably consentient in the suburbs between 0–20km from the CBD, with the inner-city vacancy rate at 2.3 per cent compared to 2.4 per cent in December; the middle suburbs’ vacancy rate is 2.3 per cent compared to 1.2 per cent. It is also clear that there is a higher level of vacancies in the suburbs within 4km of
the CBD. The level of vacant rental homes across Melbourne appears to have stabilised just below what would be considered a balanced market at three per cent. Overall, in regional Victoria the vacancy rate is 1.6 per cent, continuing the trend of fewer va-
cant rental homes compared to Melbourne. Of the three main regional centres Ballarat now has the lowest level of vacancies, with 0.5 per cent compared to 1.3 per cent in December. Bendigo, which has been below one per cent for just under a year, has a vacancy rate of 0.9 per cent compared to 0.5 per
cent in December. In both cases vacant rental homes are in short supply. Geelong is more similar to Melbourne, with a vacancy rate of two per cent. It has improved substantially for renters from the 0.9 per cent recorded in December.
SKEWED… More high-end house sales in the December quarter compared to March may have skewed median prices.
Figures paint wrong picture, agent says In some other areas such as Bendigo, Geelong and Mildura there were actually increases of between 2.1 percent and 5.6 percent in the March quarter. Mr Harvey said Wodonga was also the fastest -growing regional city in Victoria, with a 2.1 per cent population increase from 2010-2011, up from 1.9 percent in 2009-10, which augured well for future property values. “Another reason to buy now is that vendors are being realistic and not inflating prices to then drop them,” he said. “When a home was worth $300,000, vendors used to price it at $329,000, trying to get $300,000. Now they price it at $305,00 and if offered $298,000 usually go.” Interest rates had also just been cut by the Reserve Bank on Tuesday. Mr Harvey said one of the reasons the December median price may have been so much higher is because sales were traditionally higher in December, with people using the summer break as a good time to move, with more higher-end houses being sold as a result.
Established estates. Quality homes. A safe and secure neighbourhood with a great selection of land on both sides of the border at a great price.

MEDIAN house prices quoted by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria may be accurate but they do not accurately reflect what’s going on in the market here, Clinton Harvey of Wodonga Real Estate says. “The median house price can easily be skewed by a larger number of higher-end sales one quarter compared to the other and I think that is what has happened in this case,” Mr Harvey said. “It does not mean house values have dropped by that amount! “Things have been very stable for the past eight years and in my opinion it is a good time to buy because I think they will start going up within the next two to three years. “The only thing holding the market back at the moment is confidence. The world economy has improved, Australia is going okay and employment here is quite stable.” Figures released by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria for the March quarter showed the median price of a house in Wodonga dropped from $298,000 to $255,000, although for 2011 as a whole only dropped 4.6 per cent.

Local Sport Racing great remembered By BLAIR THOMSON LATE Brad Jones Racing team member Jason Richards was remembered at an event held in his honour over the weekend. The Jason Richards Memorial saw 130 go kart drivers from across Australia competing at the Sheathers Road Karting Complex in Wodonga in round four of the Rotax Pro Tour. A minute’s silence was held prior to the finals to remember the talented V8 Supercar driver, who lost his battle with cancer last year at age 35, and the New Zealand national anthem was also played prior to the Australian national anthem. Richards started his racing career in karting and had competed on the Rotax Pro Tour. His family had been invited to the event, but were said to be still too distressed by his passing to attend. “It was a highly successful event,” Albury Wodonga Kart Club president John Reynolds said.
“One local guy, Peter Jackman, finished second overall in the over 40’s class, he was our best placed competitor. “Zac Phillips finished eighth in the junior class, Danny Wright finished 10th in the heavy class and James Reynolds finished 13th. “Jordan Boys was also doing well in the juniors but had a mechanical failure in the final and didn’t finish. “So it was a pretty good result from the local competitors.” In overall standings, Melbourne driver Thomas Randle won the junior category and Daniel Rochford overpowered Pierce Lehane, who had dominated qualifying events, to take out the light category. Troy Woolston was presented with the Jason Richards Memorial Award trophy for best embodying Richard’s racing spirit before winning the heavy class. “That will be a perpetual tro-
phy,” Mr Reynolds explained. “I think he won it because of his never-say-die attitude and his willingness to win, but also because he’s a very fair and clean competitor. “He embodied Richards’ racing tenacity, performance and spirit.” About 500 people attended the weekend’s event, with hopes the memorial will return to the Border next year. “We’re trying to get it back as an annual event,” Mr Reynolds said. “It went really well, no glitches at all so we’ve done everything we can to ensure we get it back, but we’ll have to wait and see.” New lap records were set in every class with drivers reaching top speeds of around 130kmh. Monthly club days are held at the local track with a large regional event scheduled at the course in August.

Club back on track for winter THE Border Track & Field Club conducted the first of their winter programs on Sunday at Alexandra Park in Albury. “The aim of the program series is to prepare the school-age athletes for their school carnivals, and enable all athletes to work on technique and provide a fitness base over the winter months, in preparation for the summer season,” spokesperson Bernie Cannan said. “While the programs have a competitive nature to them, they have been designed to include coaching and training drills to assist all athletes.” The Border Club in conjunction with the Albury Little Athletics Centre is also running a train-
ing program for the older members of ALAC. “The aim of this is to provide an insight into senior athletics as well as providing training drills, coaching and improve their knowledge of athletics,” Bernie said. “While predominately aimed at secondary school-age athletes and the upper age groups of Little Athletics, anyone over the age of 11, of any ability, including parents are more than welcome to attend and join in.” The program will be held on the last Sunday of each month, starting at 3pm. New members are always welcome. For more information phone 0409 326 218.
READY TO RUN… Kevin Shanahan and Alex Takle were among those who turned out last Sunday. Kevin is training for track and field and Alex pentathlon, hoping to qualify for the state titles. Picture: CAROLINE STRAINIG
