‘Just get rid of it’ Councillor says Cumberoona too expensive By BLAIR THOMSON THE SAGA of the Cumberoona continues. Work to fix the paddle steamer will start soon, weather permitting, with ground works at the site currently under way. The vessel could be ready for operation within two to three months, but requires clearance from Maritime NSW and an operator to run the vessel. Albury councillor Henk van de Ven says council figures show almost $1m has been spent on the vessel since he joined the council in 2004 with what he says is little benefit to the community. $1.9m has been spent running and maintaining the vessel over the last 17 years. He believes the Cumberoona should be sold after the current repairs, valued at about $200,000, have been completed. “Sell it to the highest bidder,” he said. “I asked the question to the council, and that’s how much it’s cost in the last eight years, $940,000.” The Cumberoona had been used on the Murray as a tourist attraction and for events between 1986 and 2006 but has been sitting on a slip at Wodonga Creek since. The council will seek expressions of interest for someone to run the vessel once the repairs have been completed and safety checks passed, but that doesn’t guarantee the vessel will become operational. Cr van de Ven said it was time public spending on the Cumberoona stopped. “It should not be allowed to cost this community any more,” he said in a paid advertisement in NewsWeekly. But long time Cumberoona and Uiver supporter Cr Philomeena Sawyer said the money spent

The vessel will be jacked up onto stands so engineers can work on the hull, with staff waiting until water levels reside before the project can begin.
Fun for kids too GROWL… Wodonga’s Little Me Markets, held at Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre are proving popular, not just with Border residents but those visiting the area as well. Hume near full
Editorial
By BLAIR THOMSON
At what cost
WINTER is usually the time of year when Lake Hume is most empty. But the dam is edging closer to full capacity following recent rainfall, with predictions it will fill to the top. Around 30 billion litres of water was flowing into Lake Hume each day early this week, with a slightly higher amount being released, causing the Murray to swell. With the dam sitting at 97.6 percent at the time NewsWeekly went to print, NSW State Water senior field asset officer Ross Hillary said it would inevitably reach capacity. “That’s a bit of a prediction, but it will, he said. “But we like to maintain a bit of air space in there so we can capture the rain instead of releasing everything that comes through straight away. “Having it so full is good for some, not for others. With El Nino weather pat-
By TREVOR JACKSON ALBURY is a great place to visit. It’s set in an area with easy access to so many tourist attractions such as the snowfields of Victoria and NSW. Short day trips reveal wineries, historic sites such as Beechworth and Kelly country, not to mention the various other attractions in the Riverland region. This makes Albury the perfect home base for family holidays. And yet the debate still rages regarding some of our so-called iconic features. When it comes to the Cumberoona or the Uiver the community is split. But it has to be asked what value these items add to the city landscape. Those entering the region by air could be greeted with a slice of history should the Uiver be restored and situated within easy view. It does provide an interesting look back at our history. With such a major waterway right in the heart of the city it seems the Cumberoona is ideal to showcase the mighty Murray, but can it be sustainable? When it comes to the crunch the council has to ask what real value is added, not just in dollar terms but in word-of-mouth references to the city of Albury. But something needs to be done instead of all the talk. If these icons are to go the way of the Dodo, get on with it. If they truly do offer something to the city, again, get on with it. This continued extension of fruitless discussion simply causes further divide in the community and wastes time and ratepayers’ money.
FILLING‌ The Hume Dam is near capacity with plenty of water being released. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON terns forecast, which would result in less rain, the high water level is seen as a positive. “But ever since the El Nino was mentioned it hasn’t stopped raining,â€? Mr Hillary said. “It is just a prediction, and you can’t go on predictions. “We haven’t changed anything at this stage based on those predictions.â€? Mr Hillary said the power station at the Hume Weir had
been running at full capacity for about two weeks. “When it’s running flat out it provides enough power for something like 30,000 households for one day, he said. “We cranked up our releases from 10,400 megalitres a day mid last week to 30,000 megalitres. “If the dry conditions don’t change, we’ll be slightly easing back on the releases in coming days.

Population grows, but birth rate continues to fall By BLAIR THOMSON THE BIRTH rate at Wodonga Hospital has fallen for the second year in a row despite a rapidly growing Border population. Figures from last financial year show 1616 babies were born at the hospital, down from 1621 the previous year and 1661 in 2009/10. Albury Wodonga Health deputy director of nursing maternity service, Julie Wright, said economic uncertainty could be behind the decline. “The economic climate is always a factor as to whether people are watching this space, “But it could just be a pure coincidence. “We have had a frenzy with women booking in lately so I’ll be staying alert as to what happens between now and December because I sense deliveries will pick up again. “I’ve heard of areas like Shepparton and Bendigo having an increase in the last six months.” Ms Wright said despite the decline, the last three years in the maternity ward had been busy. “In 2009/10 it was a recordbreaking year with 1661 births and it’s slipped back a bit since then,” she said. “I don’t think anyone would have comprehended it continuing to grow at such a steady rate to the point that we’re recognised in the state as a very busy maternity hospital.” Last year’s births were still significantly higher than a decade ago, when

SMILE… One of our youngest residents, Zoe Stevens, pictured at nine hours old. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON 1436 babies were delivered. Males are consistently delivered at a higher rate at the hospital, which Ms Wright puts down to natural causes. “More males will pass away before the age of 30 than females because of that risky type of behaviour with cars, farm work and manual labour,” she said. “You do tend to lose more males and it’s probably nature balancing itself out.”
More babies are born by Caesarean – about 30 percent, up from 15 percent two decades ago – and the hospital is able to care for more sick and premature babies. “The babies who have breathing problems, we would nearly always send them off to Melbourne if they needed ventilation or mechanical breathing support,” Ms Wright said. “We’re keeping more and more babies here.
“We have the special care nursery where we have all the small unwell babies and that keeps us quite busy. “Despite the decline over the last three years, it has been comparatively busy here.” Wodonga is the fastest growing regional city in Victoria, expanding by about 2.1 percent each year, while Albury is growing at about 1.5 percent each year.
ALBURY police allegedly found firearms, cannabis and methamphetamine after forcing their way into an Eden Street home on Tuesday afternoon. Insp Matthew Tishler said police kicked in a side door of the Lavington home while executing a search warrant at about 4.30pm. Police say two shortened firearms were found, along with 28 grams of cannabis, four grams of methamphetamine, an amount of cash and ammunition. A 27-year-old woman and 30-yearold man were charged with drug supply offences and dealing with the proceeds of crime. The two have appeared before Albury Local Court. Inspector Tishler said the raid had been dangerous for the police involved. “There’s always danger when you have to force entry to exercise a search warrant, especially when there’s shortened firearms and ammunition,” he said. He said police could legally force their way into homes if certain conditions were met. “So long as we announce our office prior to entry,” he said. “It depends on what decision we make, weather it’s a door, or window or garage. “That’s subject to the officer.”

THE Cumberoona has cost this community $940,000 since I came on council in 2004, and it has basically sat on the river bank and gone nowhere, and it should not be allowed to cost this community any more. It was a private project that received government funding for the bicentennial celebrations, but with no long term business plan, when they ran into financial difficulties they expected council to bail them out. Council was divided on the issue at the time, but the decision set a precedent for other projects that ran into trouble, like the Uiver and the Ettamogah Sanctuary. And when I oppose any more spending on these projects it will be as a supporter of the silent majority, not pandering to the wishes of the very vocal minority. The mayoral vehicle and the China trip. On the16,000 kilometres it has travelled in four years, it has cost council $1.60 per kilometre to have, and if Cr Gould had needed a car she could have used her own and claimed $0.63 per kilometre travelling allowance, as can all councillors when they travel on council business. As Mayor, Cr Gould invariably did not travel alone to outlying areas for meetings, she nearly always had a staff member go with her to those meetings, so the mayoral car was a total waste of money. And Cr Glachan has not moved to save the city any money by getting rid of the car. And the sister city trip, which council had made a decision to not send anyone to, but Cr Gould decided she wanted to go anyway. Another $20,000 wasted. What has AlburyCity got out of it? You be the judge. Should we keep the Cumberoona? The money spent on the Cumberoona in the last eight years would fund another kilometre of new road, another three kilometres of local streets rehabilitated, six kilometres of streets resealed, or five kilometres of new footpaths or cycling paths, or perhaps a new skate park for the youth of our city. Fears for young students as drivers flout road rules By BLAIR THOMSON PARENTS and staff at Albury Preschool say speeding drivers are putting young lives at risk. The Alma Street preschool is located near a blind corner and teacher Joe Barton says drivers rarely stick to the 50kmh speed limit, with a speed sign obscured by trees. NSW preschools don’t qualify as 40kmh school zones, and it’s claimed many drivers travel at 60kmh on the street. “Because it’s a blind corner it’s very difficult for parents crossing the road to know what’s coming,” Ms Barton said. “It’s very, very dangerous and I think it’s a huge problem. “Students are always in the company of parents when they leave but they’re often responsible for four or five kids at the same time and it only takes one second for them to get out of their parent or guardian’s sight. “There have been a few near misses.” The preschool’s committee recently made a submission to Albury Council about the dangers of the road. “They’d be going 60kms an hour, sometimes more,” committee member Helen Darmody said. “We at least need a warning system because there’s not that awareness that people are going to pass a preschool. “The parents, teachers and the committee here, we just want safety for our kids.” The committee wants better signage on the road, warning lights, and for the road to be designated a 40kmh area. Council staff will collect traffic and speed data which may then be provided to NSW Police and the NSW Road and Maritime Service. But Member for Albury Greg Aplin said it was “very unlikely” the speed limit would change, but said the council could consider other road issues at the site.
Connecting people and communities
Road help sought By BLAIR THOMSON ALBURY Council wants community members to nominate streets where they think speeding is a problem. The top five Albury streets where speeding is a concern will be targeted in an enforcement and advertising campaign. “In NSW, speed is a factor in about 40% of road deaths, which means that around 200 people die each year from speeding,” council’s road safety officer Lauren Torocsik said. “50km/h has been the speed limit for urban streets in NSW since 2003, so there is no excuse for people not knowing what speed to do,” she added. “If you are in a built up area and don’t see a sign, the speed limit is 50km/h.” The campaign is being conducted by council in partnership with the Roads Maritime Service in response to the high number of phone calls regarding speeding on local roads, and an increase in the number of speed related crashes. Drivers are urged to take caution on local streets with walkers, bike riders, dogs and children all potentially at risk of speeding drivers. Residents can nominate dangerous streets until 24 July by calling 6023 8111 or visiting www.alburycity.nsw.gov.au/speed
SLOW DOWN… Joe Barton and Helen Darmody at a blind turn in Alma Street. Both are concerned about the dangers posed by drivers near the Albury Preschool. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON “All students are required to be accompanied by an adult as part of their rules, which is why preschools don’t fall under that 40kmh limit” he said. “That doesn’t mean that there aren’t concerns and council can look at individual considerations to determine the volume of traffic and other issues in those individual situations.”
In the meantime, Ms Barton and Ms Darmody are warning drivers to slow down. “We have 50 children here on one day at any given time,” Ms Barton said. “That’s a lot of people and cars coming in and out, even without dealing with passing traffic. “The parents body is worried there’s going to be a crash.”

Hume Public School creating a change By TREVOR JACKSON
FIVE young athletes, including three sisters, were presented with Young Achiever Support Scheme (YASS) awards at the Wodonga Council meeting this week. Trent McMullan, Alexandra Cox and sisters Olivia, Lily and Matilda Richardson were congratulated by Wodonga Mayor Mark Byatt after all five have competed at either a state or national level in their chosen sports. Trent, 15, has been a member of the Wodonga basketball representative program for six years and has been selected to play in the Basketball Victoria Country state team for the past three years, co-captaining the under 16 state team at the Australian Championships in Tamworth. Alex, 15, played in the Ovens and Murray water polo competi-
tion to win the highest goal scorer in the 16 and under age category for the second year running. She also topped the B grade women’s competition. While representing NSW at a recent tournament, Alex scored six goals against American team Ukiah and helped her side to a 21 to four victory. Sisters Olivia, 11, Lily and Matilda Richardson, both 9, recently competed at the Australian Midwinter Youth Championships in Brisbane. There were more than 220 children entered from every state and territory, as well as Singapore, Hong Kong and the USA. The girls sailed in the International Optimist Dinghy Green Fleet in which there were 27 competitors. Matilda finished sixth overall, Lily 11th and Olivia 22nd.

Picture: TREVOR JACKSON He said the idea of the boomerang came from the children involved. They drew the plan, cut out the shape, rubbed it down and added the artwork and names of all students involved. They then sent the boomerang to North Sydney where the students there added their touches to the opposite side. “As a teacher you can plan something but when the kids take it, they take it on a completely different tangent to what you thought would happen,â€? Mr Mansell said. “I was just along for the ride ‌ it was
fantastic.â€? Mr Mansell added that the Indigenous culture was second nature to the children at Hume Public. “When we were doing this, to our kids it was just an art program,â€? he said. “To the kids up there it was like “Wow, look what you kids are doingâ€?. At our school we don’t think of it like NAIDOC ‌ it’s just part of our life, part of our culture. It’s a big thing but it’s not out of the ordinary. Our kids embrace it.â€? Hume Public school will again team up with North Sydney for this year’s entry.

HUME Public School students are excited to be taking part in the CREATivE CHANGE GenerationOne school competition for the second year in a row. And after the great showing in last year’s competition they are hoping to go one better and take out the overall prize. GenerationOne is a movement designed to bring all Australians together and end the disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in one generation. The competition encourages primary schools to perform and film their own version of the theme song, Hands Across Australia while secondary schools use the Warumpi Band’s Blackfella/Whitefella to inspire their response to Indigenous disparity. Last year Hume Public School received a CEO Commendation Award for their joint entry with North Sydney Public School. Despite being located more than 500km apart the schools used ‘connected classroom’ video conference technology to allow the students to interact with each other on a regular basis. One of the major projects was a large boomerang created by both schools. Assistant principal of Hume Public School Ken Mansell, who was involved with last year’s entry said the competition was a great learning tool for both schools and gave the students here an opportunity to share their experiences with their city counterparts. He said while North Sydney had little contact with Indigenous children, Hume had a 35 percent ratio of Aboriginal children and as a result were able to provide valuable information to their peers.

Rail could be way of the future: Hockey By BLAIR THOMSON
CHAT‌ Joe Hockey and Phil Clements talk about the Ettamogah Rail Hub. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON
ducing the transport industry’s reliance on trucking. Mr Hockey spoke to the hub’s general manager Phil Clements about the opportunities such facilities provide, before meeting CSU staff and students to discuss plans to enhance the university’s medical school in western NSW. Mr Clements said he hoped the rail hub would itself expand over coming years. “We can get more services coming in and out of the hub and we do have our own land up the back here, about seven hectares, which can be developed an industrial estate, he said. “We see the potential to do other things here that we’re keen to pursue. “We’ve got a fairly ambitious program going forward over the next couple of years. Mr Hockey had been touring regional Victoria, mainly to discuss the carbon tax.
CREATING more transport facilities like the Ettamogah Rail Hub is a “no brainer, according to Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey. Mr Hockey visited the rail hub and Charles Sturt University in Thurgoona on Wednesday. “Firstly we’re here to hear about the carbon tax impact on businesses but also to understand what the opportunities are for regional Australia, he told NewsWeekly. “When you see an intermodal (transport hub) like this, you say to yourself, this is going to alleviate some of the enormous growth that may come with trucks on the roads over the next 20 or 30 years. “We’ve got to better utilise existing infrastructure, which this does, and unused infrastructure. The Ettamogah Rail Hub, which opened in June 2009, is a container handling terminal which moves containers between trucks and trains, re-

Come and see the cutest alpacas in the region Check out the products made from the “Fibre of the Gods” CRESWICK Natural Fibres has a new store in Beechworth selling natural fibre products. Alpaca products are a major focus for the Australian-owned business but other natural fibre products are also offered including wool and cashmere. Having opened on 4 July the business has received positive feedback from locals and tourists alike, with many visitors also coming from areas such as Albury, Wangaratta and Myrtleford. Store manager John Smyth said he was pleased with the way the store had been received and the interest generated by the products. He said alpaca products were popular for a number of reasons. The insulation properties and quality of the hollow fibre both warms and cools the body, is far lighter than many other fibres and lasts longer. “We focus on the natural fibres, alpaca, wool, cashmere, and they’re really making a comeback,” Mr Smyth said. “Alpaca traps the heat and keeps you a lot warmer but doesn’t have the weight. In summer the hollow fibre lets
out the heat so it keeps your body temperature at a constant so you’re not overheating. “People who appreciate quality also like the product because they know it’ll last.” Many of the products offered by Creswick Natural Fibres are produced from locallysourced wool at the Creswick mill which has been in operation since 1947 and is the only coloured wool spinning mill of its type in Australia. And the focus will be on alpacas this weekend when Creswick Natural Fibres hosts a Cutest Cria Competition featuring some of the prettiest baby alpacas, (crias), in the region. Entry is free and those attending can vote for the cutest cria in the People’s Choice Award. The event is being held this Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July at the Beechworth store with many local and interstate breeders displaying their stock. Activities will be provided for all ages with the opportunity to talk to local breeders about alpacas and the perfect opportunity to see some of the products made from the “Fibre of the Gods”. Children can also enter a colouring competition with a chance to win a great prize. Creswick Natural Fibres is located at 54 Ford Street in Beechworth and can be contacted on 03 5728 1741. CUTE... Baby alpacas, crias, will on display this weekend at Creswick Natural Fibres’ Beechworth store.

Promising treatments for injuries and pain Cycling for life FOOT + Leg Pain Clinics, who are now in Albury and Wangaratta, are having great success with treatments for regenerating soft tissues to heal injuries. As a result patients are finding increased strength in damaged connective tissues, increased mobility and decreased pain. Prolotherapy, one of the most
promising medically researched treatments for tissue regeneration and repair is now being used successfully by a range of health practitioners to treat varied concerns including; chronic hip, back, elbow, knee, ankle, heel (Plantar Fasciitis), forefoot and big toe joint pain. The natural injectable glucose and anesthetic solutions are prefer-
able to cortisone and anti-inflammitory medications in assisting the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Prolotherapy is also a fast acting, minimally invasive and cost-effective solution for long-term healing. “With new research and treatments it’s becoming easier to treat and heal injuries and relieve pain, Dr. Marni Gray, podiatrist at the Albury clinic said. “We’ve assisted athletes’ return to professional sport, pain relief and increased mobility in people who have suffered for years or have been told nothing can be done for them.
It’s really very gratifying.â€? The clinics take an holistic approach to healing and consider patients nutritional requirements and lifestyle factors in conjunction with Prolotherapy and other treatment options. They also have options for needle phobic patients, or mild problems, which may include nutritional supplementation, strengthening and reconditioning programs, dry needling and prescription foot orthotics. CYCLING has obvious health benefits and Lisa Barry, physiotherapist at Osteo Health in Albury knows this as well as anyone. Lisa, a full-time mum of two has taken to the sport of road cycling as is now riding for a national road team. She trains around 10 hours-aweek to keep up the level of fitness required and says cycling is something her body has thanked her for. But she says you don’t have to cover the amount of kilometres she does to gain the benefits offered from cycling. “First and foremost it’s low impact,â€? Lisa said. “You don’t have the whole body weight pounding through the legs as in running. For the average Joe getting out there it’s about being more active more often. It’s about finding a sport you know and enjoy and having someone you like to do it with.â€? While cycling can provide a good level of fitness Lisa said it was important to understand how the body works to ensure you receive the full benefit of any physical activity. “While I do endorse cycling for a lot of people I remind them they are in that bent position so they do need to stretch the body out,â€? she said. “The body is built to move ‌ it’s a very clever machine when it works well but if we spend all day bent then it’s not going to thank us.â€? And while the benefits can be very rewarding it’s just as important not to overdo it, especially those just beginning. “I’ve seen a lot of personal benefits from cycling,â€? Lisa said. “But after having children and being out of sport for a while, I had a few niggles and had to gradually build up. You need to build up with any sport.â€?

Old-school fun and fitness
RETRO‌ Old-school retro-style bikes are making a splash and helping people to live a healthier lifestyle while enjoying the experience.
THE humble push bike has come a long way from the days of the single-speed cruiser to the modern mountain and road bikes. But one thing has always remained the same: the push bike is a great way to keep fit and healthy while enjoying the outdoors. Councils are concentrating more on providing bike path networks or bike lanes on major roads, giving more access to more cyclists. And while technology bred through events such as the Tour de France has found its way into the high-end models it’s nice to see a relaxed riding experience hasn’t been forgotten. Those wanting to spend time with the family and get out and about are well catered for, with model designs harking back to days of old. Bikes such as the Schwinn Deluxe pictured are proving popular amongst the average commuter and providing comfort and simplicity for those relaxed weekend rides. Ash Humbert from Pushy’s Bike Warehouse says it all comes down to personal choice and requirements. With well over 10 years in the industry he’s seen a spike in the popularity of cycling for pleasure and fitness and says the new retro styles are a big market mover. “Bikes have come a long way, he said. “The days of being on an old hard seat and not being comfortable are gone. As the bikes get better people enjoy what they’re doing more so they continue to ride. “All the bike manufacturers now have simplified things. They’ll do a replica of a bike you might have ridden when you were young and people come in and see that and it excites them. Looking over the Schwinn it’s easy to see why people have taken to the old styles again with comfortable seating, a relaxed riding position and three-speed hub gears operated from a twist-grip shifter to make life on the road a little easier. Ash said many people utilised bikes for rehabilitation purposes as well as those wanting to trim down a bit, but he said many people didn’t need
28 speeds and other hi-tech equipment, which is where the retros fit in. “Old-school town retro bikes have really captured people’s imagination, he said. “It’s the simplicity of them, the cost is low and people can jump on them and ride to the gym or go to the shops or have a ride with their son or daughter on the weekend. If you’re looking for a bike just to have a bit of fun and keep fit and healthy at the same time, go and check out a few of these new old-style bikes; they may just capture your imagination as well.

WEBERS Circus promises fun, excitement and danger when it opens at Gateway Lakes next Friday (27 July). Featuring ten performers, the family show involves miniature ponies, aerial stunts, performing dogs and clowns. But perhaps the most exciting part of the show is the Wheel of Death. “It’s a big rotating wheel that goes up to the top of the tent, and the performer goes inside and also does tricks on the outside, sometimes while blindfolded,” Natalie Weber said. “There’s no safety harness or net so it’s quite dangerous. “He’s come off twice before.” Performer Hewin LylzkorskyBolidar was thrown from the wheel during a show at Salamander Bay in 2010, falling from about eight meters high. “He’s learnt to come off it and catch himself, but that one time he didn’t catch himself so easily,” Ms Weber said. “The audience was in a bit of shock and he sat on the ground for a little while and we took him to hospital. “He was out of the show for a week … it doesn’t always go to plan when it’s a live show.” Webers Circus has been touring the nation since 2006, with each

Vast void leads Rai to experiment By BLAIR THOMSON THIRSTY Merc front man Rai Thistlethwayte is riding solo at tonight’s (Friday) SS&A Club gig. The man responsible for songs like In the Summertime, 20 Good Reasons and Someday, Someday, has been experimenting with a new sound of late. A period of change has led to Thistlethwayte creating a “whole swag of new material”. “I’ve been messing around with a loop pedal and singing beats, and playing over the top of that,” he told NewsWeekly. “And there’s a lot of spontaneity that comes from that and it gives me a lot of flexibility. “Things can open out. “You never know how the songs are going to end. “When you’ve only got a keyboard and vocals, it really is all about the style of singing and playing that I do naturally. “It’s definitely different to a band consideration and it’s definitely cutting edge from where I’m at as a musician.” Thistlethwayte recently returned from a three month trip to Los Angeles to check out the city’s music scene. “I moved out of my apartment which I was living in for seven years which is a change and I’m staying in different part of Sydney, listening to various other music,” he said. “It’s been unsettling in a way, moving around a lot this year. “It’s been a year of change. “It’s kept it really interesting for me.” According to Thistlethwayte, being uncertain about the future aides the creative process. “John Cleese was famous for saying that you’ve got to make a void in front of yourself and fill it with something creative,” he said. “I guess that’s a similar idea of jumping in that abyss where you don’t know exactly where that next chapter is. “The way to create it is to have almost all that possibility there in front of you. “It’s creatively exciting.” The Sydney-based musician formed Thirsty Merc a decade ago. People started taking notice following 2004’s self-titled release, which went double platinum and reached number 15 on the ARIA charts.

THIRSTY… Rai Thistlethwayte enjoys keeping the future uncertain to ensure things don’t get too stale. Sliedshows, released in 2007, went gold, and the most recent album, Mousetrap Heart, reached number 14 on the charts. “We’ve been trying to put this tour together for the end of the year based on new recordings,” Thistlethwayte said. “I can’t say that it’s an ‘album’ album, but we’re just putting the logistics together for that. “We’ve had a pretty chilled out year.” The band toured for a year-and-ahalf following the release of Mousetrap Heart and were in need of some time apart. “It’s emotionally draining to finish a tour and just go straight back into it,”
Thistlethwayte said. “Sometimes that’s happened, the band’s just wanted to get straight back into the studio after a run of gigs. “Other times it’s like it’s good to give it a couple of months or six months before you get back into it. “But towards the end of the year we might be back.” Thistlethwayte plays several Merc songs during his solo shows, but said he would focus on his own music. Rai Thistlethwayte plays at the SS&A Club on Friday 20 July from 9pm. Entry is free.

Hard to find fault in new Spider-Man MOVIE: The Amazing Spider-Man (M) DURATION: 136 minutes IT FEELS like it’s way too soon to reinvent the Spider-Man movie franchise. Tobey Maguire was, after all, still getting around in the iconic red costume only five years ago, and doing a damn fine job of it too. But while the old story archs have been reheated with a different spin, The Amazing Spider-Man is … well … amazing. Andrew Garfield stars as Spidey, starting off as smart, but weak and nerdy high-schooler Peter Parker, before gaining his powers in a similar fashion to the original film from 2002.

He fits the role perfectly. He captures that feeling of an ordinary kid doing extraordinary things, while still trying to figure out his place in the world. And the film is grounded enough, you don’t need to suspend reality too heavily, for you to connect with what you’re watching. Equipped with his new powers, Spidey begins his good deeds by stopping petty crooks but bigger and scarier problems quickly emerge. The main villain is talented scientist Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), a wellintentioned man who hopes to develop a formula to regrow limbs and human tissue. Of course this goes wrong, and The Lizard emerges.
The nine foot tall beast plays out some visually stunning fight scenes with Spider-Man, but it’s not just the moments of action that are impressive. Even the simplest of scenes are beautifully produced, and the overall screenplay is faultless. 3D technology has been used to bring the movie to life and isn’t overdone, jumping out at moments where necessary, and laying restrained in the moments it should. Emma Stone plays Parker’s love interest, Gwen Stacy, with aplomb, and every other actor suits their character to a tee. Hopefully the sequels live up to this brilliant start, which the previous run of films failed to do.

Residential market remains stable
THE latest REIV house price data shows that the median price of a house in Melbourne has remained steady at $535,000 in the June quarter. A combination of broader economic factors, slowing population growth and continuing low levels of consumer confidence have resulted in no real capital growth in the residential market this year. The results confirm feedback from REIV Members that both buyers and sellers are approaching the market in a conservative manner. This is translating into a lower number of sales than is present in a strong market and as a result, no real price growth has been recorded. Historical analysis shows that the real estate market moves in cycles and after the initial price falls in 2011, it is now in a period of stability marked by low activity. The median price has fallen 5.3 percent over the past 12 months but, as the overall median has not changed in the past six months, this indicates that the market has plateaued and is likely to remain like this until confidence improves. The median price of a house in metropolitan Melbourne increased by 2.9 percent to $535,000 from a revised March median of $520,000; and the median price of a unit increased by 2.3 percent to $450,000 from a revised March median of $440,000. In regional Victoria the median house price dropped by 1.6 percent to $305,000. Prices were generally stable in Geelong at $386,000, there was a 2.6 percent increase to $315,000 in Bendigo, and in Ballarat there was a 3.5 percent drop to $280,000. The suburb-by-suburb details are available from www.reiv.com.au or the VIEW app.

Solar power generating savings By TREVOR JACKSON
POWER… Janelle Beath says residents in the region can save real money with a council-endorsed solar system.
CLEAN energy and carbon footprint are terms bandied around regarding our impact on the environment, but what do they really mean to the average homeowner? In financial terms reducing your carbon footprint in your home by making use of clean energy options can save money. And north east Victorian residents are discovering how with a popular community solar program which provides information on how to reduce, or in some cases wipe out your electricity bill. The Solar North East program, funded by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with ZEN Home Energy Systems, is providing information for homeowners that is invaluable to their decisions on solar power options. Since the program was launched in October last year more than 1500 residents have attended the initial information sessions and 263 systems, with an average size of 2.97kW have been ordered. As well as helping keep household finances in the black, the program is making significant contributions to the environment by reducing 726 tonnes of carbon emissions so far. The Solar North East program provides individual home assessments by an energy adviser, giving advice on reducing energy consumption and recommending suitable home energy systems to residents. WAW Credit Union has jumped on board offering low-interest fi-
nance to participating residents in certain council areas, making the prospect of solar power even more attractive. ZEN manager Janelle Beath said the program, endorsed by local councils, was proving very popular as the cost of electricity continued to rise. “It is a huge saving,” she said. “If you put the right system in, potentially you can wipe out your electricity bill or even go into credit. I think one of the advantages of the program is the fact that the guesswork is taken out of it. “A lot of people get totally confused about solar. They can come along with an electricity bill and discuss what options there are for them and what system they need. “It’s a program developed to educate people about solar.” Figures released show 555kW of solar power installed with an estimated yearly yield of 851MW hours, a total carbon footprint reduction of 726 tonnes of CO2, 14 full and part time jobs created in addition to work generated for sub contracted installers in each shire district and most importantly average household savings of $1446 on energy bills per year. A new round of information sessions is set down at towns in the region including Tamgambalanga, Bellbridge, Wodonga, Chiltern and Yackandandah. For more information on the project and dates of sessions go online at www.solarnortheast.com.au or www.zenhomeenergy.com.au.

Web Page Directory QR codes explained YOU’VE probably seen QR codes in various places quite often now. And you might have wondered what they are and how you use them. We explain below exactly what this technology is and how it’s used. What is a QR code? Think of QR codes (or Quick Response code) as a barcode designed to take people from the physical world to the online world. The technology was invented in Japan to track a car maker’s manufacturing process but has branched out into broader use on mobile devices. If you see a billboard for a movie you like, or a pair of shoes you want to find out more about, traditionally you would have had to jot down or memorise a lengthy web address. Now you can simply scan the QR code and visit the website instantly, or bring up contact details. How do I get it to work? To scan a QR Code, you first need a QR code scanner installed on your mobile phone.
WELCOME to the exciting first edition of NewsWeekly’s web page directory. With more and more companies using the internet as a tool to reach potential customers and service the needs of current clients, the web is a vital tool for any business. Coupled with proven advertising sources like NewsWeekly, local companies are seeing the benefits of having an online presence. This page provides a direct link between advertisers and their webpage, sending interested readers straight to the site.
¡
¡
This is done using a QR code (see story to left). In simple terms, a QR code is a barcode that can be scanned by a phone. The phone will then open the relevant website, taking out the need to stumble through search engines to find what you’re looking for. Take up of the new technology has been impressive, to say the least. And the great news is that every advertiser in our new web page directory will be given a QR code, absolutely free of charge, thanks to Aussie Local Marketing. While plenty of busi-
nesses have websites, getting clients there has now been made a whole lot simpler. This page will run on the third Friday of each month, making advertisers stand out from their competitors. Interest in this exciting new venture has been high. If you want to advertise in the highest circulating paper in Albury Wodonga, reaching over 30,000 homes and 50 pick-up points, call us on (02) 6022 5800. It could just give your business that competitive edge.
NewsWeekly website HAVE you visited NewsWeekly’s website or Facebook page lately? With news, sport and entertainment, and a full copy of the week’s paper, the site (awnw.com.au) is gaining momentum and
readers. And our Facebook page is more popular than ever as more people “like each day. So why not check them both out today and see what all the fuss is about.

An exciting new opportunity
These programs are made for nearly every mobile phone manufacturer and are simple to use. A quick search of iTunes will find several QR code scanners, while a Google search will find plenty of apps for other phones. Go with the one that has best reviews. What next? Once the program (or app) is installed and running, you simply need to scan the QR code and the information and web links will appear. Is this technology here to stay? Yes, and its usage is growing. Studies show more people know what QR codes are, more people are using them and more companies are making them. In fact, some clothing companies are moving from physical stores to displays with QR codes where shoppers scan the codes and buy online, rather than in person.

BORDER residents flocked to the Brad Jones Racing garage last week for the recording of V8Xtra. The program provides an insight into the V8 Supercar season and is telecast on channel Seven. The BJR workshop was opened to the public with racing identities Neil Crompton and Mark Larkham calling the shots. The live taping was well received by the vocal crowd, many of whom took the opportunity to fire questions at the team owners and drivers as well as Crompton and Larkham. Team boss Brad Jones said he was hoping to attract around 200 fans to the night and was pleased to see numbers around the 300 mark attending. He said it showed the passion for the sport here on the Border and the knowledge of V8 Supercar fans as a whole. “It goes to show how well informed V8 Supercar fans are,” Jones said. “They certainly knew what was going on in the category and they had really good questions about where the category was going and what was happening with different things. “It was good to have that opportunity to interact with the people at the end of the night and get a feel for what they think.”
And many of the questions revolved around the introduction of the Car of the Future, the new breed of V8 Supercar set to come online next season. “The Car of the Future is going okay for us but it’s not something we’ve been focused on,” Jones said. “I think you get caught up in the Car of the Future stuff and right now we don’t need to be. We just need to keep focusing on getting results and hopefully a race win or two before the end of the year.” Overall Jones said he was pleased with the night and the support shown from fans. “There are a lot of V8 Supercar fans on the Border and they are always interested in what we’re doing,” he said. “I find that any interaction I have about motor racing when I’m doing something around town is always positive and I think it’s great that people are interested enough to come out to the workshop and interact. After the show hardly anyone went home. They were all interested in talking to Neil and the drivers and Larko and Kim (Jones) and I. We do have a strong local following and it’s great they can come and be involved in something like that.” The V8Xtra episode will be screened this Saturday, 21 July on channel Seven.

Local Sport The right racing formula By TREVOR JACKSON
SUCCESS… Border racer Michael Hinrichs is looking to bridge the gap to his competitors in the search for a podium position in this season of Formula Ford racing.
TWO Border racers are heading to Sandown Raceway this weekend to contest round three of the CAMS Victorian State Formula Ford championship. Michael Hinrichs and Gary Burns are currently running Mygale cars under the Omega Technical Engineering banner, with Hinrichs sitting in third place overall while Burns sits just a couple of positions back in fifth. The team also includes a further two cars that won’t be participating this weekend driven by James Garley, currently fourth and Chris Panazzo, currently eighth. All four drivers were regular kart racers at the Sheathers Road track in Wodonga before stepping up to the Formula Ford series. Burns and Panazzo are in their rookie years in the hotly contested category while Hin-
richs and Garley are in their second seasons, showing the team is on the pace, up against such names as Brian Sampson and Leanne Tander. Both Burns and Hinrichs will both be looking to up the ante this weekend and hope to bring home a good result. Hinrichs said they were all pleased with the season so far from a team perspective and hoped to bridge the gap to the front of the field this weekend. And with just 26 points separating him from the lead and Burns only 62 points off the front it’s quite possible they will both move up the leader-board. “We haven’t been fast enough so far so we’re trying to get fast and consistent and score some good points this weekend,” Hinrichs said. “With Gary being in his rookie year, he’s developing quite quickly and doing a good
job, so I think he has a good chance of picking up a place or two.” And while all seems to be running to plan the team works hard off the track to ensure its success. “We’re not a professional team as such,” Hinrichs said. “We prepare all the cars ourselves and do all the work on the cars ourselves. We don’t have people do that for us like the front guys but we’ve had a pretty reliable run so far, which is a big thing.” Hinrichs said it was good to have so many Border racers contesting Formula Ford competitions across the country, with two other locals, Sam Breen and Macauley Jones also racing at Sandown on the weekend in the Duratec class.
Lauren Jackson to play in Albury By TREVOR JACKSON LAUREN Jackson is set to play basketball at the stadium that bears her name when Albury hosts a round of the WNBL between Canberra Capitals and Bendigo Spirit on Sunday 18 November. It will be the first time Jackson has played at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre since its renaming and is sure to attract a large crowd. “Playing with the Canberra Capitals again is going to be very exciting, but being to be able to play a game in my home town gives me something to really look forward to with great pride,” Jackson said. “There is nothing like playing in front of your home crowd and I’m so delighted that I will be able do this in Albury with the Canberra Capitals.” This is the third year the Capitals have played a home
game in Albury and mayor Alice Glachan is asking locals to not only get behind Jackson but fully support the Capitals. “Securing top-level sporting events in Albury takes much negotiation and lobbying and Basketball ACT has shown a commitment to playing in Albury for not only this year but at least a further two years,” she said. “I urge locals to support the Capitals and make this a truly home game for them. In addition we are delighted that Lauren will be playing this year, which makes for a sensational all round event.” AlburyCity team leader leisure facilities, Michael Stanton said having Jackson at the game created a fairly unique situation. “I think it’s a really unique event, having someone here in the peak of their career playing in a stadium named after
them,” he said. “Normally players have passed on or retired before a stadium is named after them so it’s really exciting.” Canberra and Bendigo faced off two years ago in Albury and attracted around 800 spectators. Mr Stanton said he felt this game, being post-Olympics with the hype that comes from that and the fact that Jackson would be playing should attract a full house. “Canberra will be strong this season with Lauren playing and Bendigo should be potential finalists,” he said. “We want people to get behind the Capitals and make it a real home game for them. We’ve forged this relationship with them and we want to continue to get their support to help get them here long term.”
