Fake flyer a ‘low act’ By BLAIR THOMSON

ALBURY councillor Henk van de Ven says a fake flyer campaign is an attempt to discredit him ahead of council elections and a “low act”. Pamphlets bearing Cr van de Ven’s image and an Enzed logo had been distributed to his business and along Wilson Street, offering a 15 percent discount at his store and promising to “stop the rot in council”. The orange printouts claim to have been authorised by the councillor, but he says he had nothing to do with them. “I just think it’s a bit of a low act,” he said. “There are people around with the knowledge who have been involved behind the scenes with council stuff over the last six or seven years, but it’s a waste of my time trying to pinpoint anybody down, because they’re going to deny it anyhow. “It’s obviously someone who understands a little bit about computers, understands a little bit about the electoral process and knows what’s going on.” He said if the flyers had have been distributed next week, they would have been illegal due to electoral laws. “It’s disappointing, the mentality of the people who do this sort of stuff,” he said. “They obviously know the laws because they’ve done it outside of the electoral period which starts on Monday.” The flyers may have been a response to last week’s NewsWeekly story in which Cr van de Ven said it was time to sell the Cumberoona paddle steamer. Several people expressed anger at the idea on NewsWeekly’s website and contacted our office, and the image used in the flyer had been taken from the website. “With issues like the Cumberoona, there’s always two sides of the debate which is good,” he said.

Picture: BLAIR THOMSON “I think healthy debate is good but this sort of stuff drags any issues down. “I’m happy to sit down and debate anyone about the Cumberoona at any time, but these sort of tactics, if they’re trying to discredit me, are just not going to work and it’s grasping at straws.” It’s believed to be the first time fake campaign flyers have been handed out in Albury, but they have been used in other electorates. Cr van de Ven denied creating the flyers himself to boost his profile ahead of council elections. “It’s not done by me,” he said. “This wasn’t done by anyone who likes me.” He said he wasn’t sure how many copies of the flyers had been created or where they had been distributed. Once the electoral process starts on Monday, all material from candidates must be approved by the NSW Electoral Commission.

Editorial Happy to lend a hand By TREVOR JACKSON RETAILERS on the Border, like those in so many other parts of the country have been doing it tough. Online sales have been eating into profit margins and forcing many businesses to close their doors, losing local jobs and much needed financial input into the region’s economy. But there are those that continue to prosper, with products not so much affected by the intrusion of the internet. On page four this week a local company, Mountain H2o has been highlighted for its willingness to donate excess stock of bottled water to a much needed cause; Wodonga FoodShare. And the company is proud of its local content, with the majority of production items sourced from the region. Warehouse and logistics manager for Mountain H2o, Peter Griffiths was eager to showcase the technology and the local involvement in the business. A couple of examples: the water is sourced from a natural spring near Mount Beauty, filtered through state-of-the-art equipment, and the subsequent labour that entails on-site here in Albury while local freight carriers cover the majority of the company’s delivery requirements, in turn boosting the Border economy further. And the donations to Wodonga FoodShare, an organisation operating under the Foodbank Victoria umbrella, further enhances the local aspect, with many pallets of bottled water destined for the needs of the immediate community here on the Border. While there may be doom and gloom out in the business community in some aspects, it’s certainly pleasing to hear a feel-good story such as this.

THE WODONGA community was this week presented with a portion of the Bay Bike for the ongoing support of Bicycle Network Victoria’s Bupa Around the Bay event. Now in its 20th year the event has grown to become Australia’s largest mass participation bike ride, with 193 riders from Wodonga having participated in that time. Bupa Around the Bay is run in conjunction with The Smith Family charity which last year raised over $1m. This year they aim to top that figure. The Bay Bike is a symbol that recognises the contribution of regional riders. The bike is broken down with portions presented to prominent regional communities during July, Wodonga being selected due to the continued support of cyclists from the region. Units lucky to escape fire as arson attacks continue

A MIDDLE-AGED man was seen carrying what appeared to be a petrol can before a maxi taxi was destroyed by fire last week. The Toyota Hiace van was set on fire outside a block of units in Hartley Street, Lavington, around 4am last Friday. A nearby resident, who asked not to be named, told police she thought she had seen a man carrying a petrol can before the incident. “It was like out of a horror movie,â€? she said. “He was tall with a wide-brimmed hat on, dark jacket, slacks and he looked like he was in his 40s. “I noticed him out of my window ‌ I would have looked more but I was too scared to.â€? She said there had been a fire at the same location “about four months agoâ€? where flames had travelled up the side of the unit. The taxi was parked about a metre from one of the units but the blaze was extinguished before it could spread. A trail of burnt grass suggested petrol had been poured around the vehicle and lit from a distance, but the petrol cap on the van was also open.

By BLAIR THOMSON AN ALBURY police officer was taken to hospital after being smashed in the face by a glass bottle on Saturday night. Police say the the 26-year-old officer was one of a dozen Albury and Wodonga police officers who responded to an out-of-control open house party in Alexander Street, East Albury. The officer was allegedly hit in the face by a man holding a bottle after trying to disperse the 150 to 200 partygoers. “The bottle didn’t break but he received a laceration below the eye,� Inspector David Cottee said. “He was treated for the laceration at Albury Base Hospital and finished the shift at the hospital.� Insp Cottee said the party had spiralled out of control, with police attending the home several times throughout the night. The gathering had been advertised on Facebook. “We had attended the same address earlier in the day to express concerns about how the party would be managed because we became aware it was on Facebook,� Insp Cottee said. “And we responded to a number of incidents earlier in the night between 8pm and 10.30pm after complaints in relation to people fighting, noise and damage. “We would strongly advise against the use of Facebook to advertise parties.� Insp Cottee said the officer wasn’t severely injured in the incident, but it highlighted the risks of the job. “It’s always a dangerous job,� he said. “The likelihood of being involved in an incident where you sustain injury is high. “The likelihood of being confronted by violent offenders is also high.� Police had not identified the attacker at the time NewsWeekly went to print and Insp Cottee said investigations would continue.

Another neighbour, Brodie Barnett, said it was usually a quiet area, but there were often arguments between the residents of the units and shouting. “There’s always a bit of trouble there,â€? he said. “There was a girl there last night banging on the doors, yelling at people. “The flames got to about roof height but the firefighters had it out pretty quick.â€? Mr Barnett said the taxi had been parked in the same location without number plates for “quite a whileâ€?. He said the owner used another taxi which was also parked at the premises. Braedon Caton said he had rushed to the scene after noticing flames from his Douglas Road home. “It was a bit worrying because it was so close to the house,â€? he said. “I just wanted to make sure no-one was hurt ‌ the firefighters were already taking care of it.â€? Albury police have responded to dozens of car fires in recent months and investigations into the taxi fire are continuing. A car was also burnt out at Glenroy this week and another car was dumped in water.

AWARD-WINNING Border business, Mountain H2o has joined Albury Wodonga Regional Foodshare to provide bottled water for needy Victorians. Albury Wodonga Regional Foodshare is an initiative of Foodbank Victoria designed to improve the volume and quality of food reaching rural and regional Victoria. The partnership will see Mountain H2o initially donate five pallets of bottled water to Wodonga and a further 10 pallets to Shepparton, with the scope for continued support into the future. Wodonga FoodShare rural community support officer Catherine Byrne said she was very pleased with the partnership that provided an essential product to the program. “My role is to source food for this region, to try to get donations in from this region and to retain it for this region,” she said. “Foodbank Victoria organises food for around 550 agencies that do emergency relief food such as food parcels. We collect from Woolworths and Coles or any excess of any food produced. “Having the water on board, which we consider essential, is just fantastic.” Ms Byrne said the program helped a wide demographic of the community from the homeless to those simply falling on hard times. Mountain H2o warehouse and logistics manager Peter Griffiths said the company was only too pleased to be able to help such a worthwhile cause. The product, which would normally be destroyed was now being put to good use, providing a win win situation for all involved. “We saw it as a way to use excess stock and stock that’s still of good shelf life,” he said.

We see it as a benefit to the local community and the greater community. We understand that people do have misfortunes, everyone does, and if we can provide a little bit of relief to someone it’s a good thing.

“We feel we’re doing the right thing by helping others.” Foodbank Victoria is an independent charity that aims to deliver nutritious, healthy food to individuals and families experiencing hardship. Through a network of more than 600 community organisations, including welfare agencies, schools, support groups and local resource centres, they provide food, emergency relief and support programs to 18,000 Victorians in need every week.

THE FUTURE of the Oz.e.Wildlife animal sanctuary won’t be decided for some time. The land at the closed sanctuary was donated to The Friends of the Ettamogah by the late Heidi Peck in 1969 and gradually transferred to council ownership. Friends of the Ettamogah chairperson Daryl West met with council representatives last week to discuss potential future uses of the land. “Hopefully there will be some recognition of Heidi Peck through a scholarship,” Mr West said.

“There’s 24 acres of land and if the land gets sold for a fund, that could go to someone deserving of it. “I’d like to see something come from it that could benefit the region.” Mr West said because the council is essentially in “caretaker” mode prior to September’s elections, a decision on the site wouldn’t be made for at least a few months. The most obvious use of the land would be for industrial purposes. Mr West said various items at the site would soon be auctioned off. “There will be a clearing

sale in the near future, as soon as we can get rid of the animals,” he said. “Hopefully that will be in the next four to six weeks. “It’s mainly odds and ends, things like tables, a cash register, shovels, a pool pump, things in the cafeteria and posts.” New homes have slowly been found for the animals since the sanctuary shut in May. Mr West said the future of the site all depended on how a future council would deal with the situation. “They’re not against the proposal for a fund and scholarship, it’s just a case of wait and see,” he said.

Celebrations planned as LibraryMuseum turns five By BLAIR THOMSON THE ALBURY LibraryMuseum turns five today. And to mark the occasion, a day of fun, celebration and cake eating is planned. The festivities will kick off at 10am with the launch of local children’s author Susan Berran’s new book, Bonez. Deputy mayor Neville Hull will launch the library’s newest exhibition, Thoroughfare, at 11am. The exhibition looks at the city’s transportation industry as it evolved from the use of horsedrawn carriages to motor vehicles and will also look at the history of the LibraryMuseum site. Cr Hull will cut a birthday cake alongside Albury and District Historical Society Member Joe Wooding and a local Albury public school student.

A National Family History Week activity will be presented by the Lavington Family History Group from 2pm to 3pm, followed by a family-friendly event involving a dinosaur dig. According to Albury Council, around 220,000 people visit the library each year, borrowing 250,000 books, DVDs and CDs. More than 10,000 people attend activities at the site, including storytime, conservation workshops and technology training and 17 exhibitions are put on display each year. The building, created by local construction firm Zauner Constructions, opened in July 2007. The building has been described as “bold”, with odd angles and green areas key features.

Commit to life, reap the benefits By TREVOR JACKSON THE Border Indigenous community was treated to a special and intimate concert last week by Australian artist, Christine Anu prior to her gig at Albury Entertainment Centre. Anu performed, accompanied by a solo acoustic guitarist, to a doting crowd, shared her experiences relating to her weight loss battle and spoke to members of the Mixed Salad weight loss group. She said it was an important life lesson to impart to the local Aboriginal community, relating her own experiences, subsequent changes and health benefits. “It’s really important because I think that my mentality hadn’t switched over from that “I’m never gonna die” sort of moment,” Anu said. “Then 10 years of life catches up and you’re thinking, “I’ve got every health risk that’s happening in my family or in the wider community knocking on my door right now and if I want to continue doing what I love doing the most, I’ve got to do something about it”. Whilst I wasn’t doing anything about it I wasn’t enjoying what I was doing at all because it was just eating away at me, that disconnect with how we talk with our bodies … it was really about engaging that again.” While on stage Anu shared a conversation she’d had with Cathy Freeman. She recalled Freeman was unhappy for not learning enough about her culture, having been too busy. “I said to her, “you’re not dead, you can learn your culture any time”,” Anu said. “But things don’t fall out of the sky into your lap. If you want things to happen to you, you have to go out and do

it, and you have to commit. That’s pretty much what we’re doing now, she’s doing it and I’m doing it.” Anu said her passion for music was still as strong as it had ever been, although she couldn’t explain why, but felt it was a good way to share stories with her people. “I can’t explain why music does that

to me, why I still get up and sing My Island Home and I still get choked up with the words,” she said. “It’s what makes your heart beat and it’s about connecting with the storyteller in you. My grandad was a great story teller and my people are great story tellers and I’m just keeping that tradition going. Music brings you together no matter what age you are. Aretha’s music … there’s an Aretha song in the soundtrack of every single one of our lives, there’s a ‘Chain of Fools’ out there. I think music brings us together no matter what our race, religion or what age we are. “Having opportunities like this … it just helps me connect with my people and show them the human being, not the singer.”

Oil spill fears evaporate as substance declared harmless A FUEL spill into Albury’s Bungambrawatha Creek last week was not as bad as initially feared. Firefighters and Environmental Protection Agency officers responded to concerns a substance – initially thought to be diesel – had leaked into the creek, and possibly the Murray. Two booms were set up to stop the substance spreading as firefighters sought the source of the spill. But it’s now believed the substance, identified as a heating oil, was largely harmless and didn’t reach the river. “Because the Murray was so high, the water was coming back up the creek,” firefighter Daniel Castley explained. “It was flowing back in, rather than out, so we’re pretty sure it didn’t make it into the river.” The source of the spill was linked to a home in Poole Street.

“The man had a 450 litre heating tank, an old oil storage container for an old heater and that had been accidentally drained,” Mr Castley said. “I believe he was undertaking renovations and thought it was water, not a product until he realised his mistake and plugged it back up. “The whole tank didn’t get drained and he’s been quite helpful in working with the council to rectify the issues.” It’s not known how much of the tank’s contents was released in creek. Mr Castley said the oil evaporates in the sun and wasn’t likely to have any environmental impact. A Hazmat crew from Wagga attended the scene following the spill. “They had more specialised equipment for cleaning up the spill,” Mr Castley explained. “People should make sure that if they

do have any spillages or if they notice a substance, they should call the fire brigade. “We’re happy to assist.” Albury Council team leader of compliance John Mulvey said the man was facing penalties starting at $750, which would likely be decided later this week. “It was human error and I’d encourage people that if they do come across these tanks and want to remove them, they can contact council,” he said. “We don’t want to see people accidentally put themselves in a position where they face fines and costs.” Mr Mulvey said it was the third such incident he could remember in recent years. EPA staff had taken water samples from the creek following the incident which will only be analysed if needed for further investigations.

WODONGA council is seeking public comment on two concept plans for the future use of Sumsion Gardens and Belvoir Park. Recent public feedback on the use of the park was taken into account and the masterplan for the next 30 years drawn up. Two options have been developed, including a possible extension to include increased car parking and wetlands, a cafe and the extension of bike paths and walkways. Wodonga Council acting manager infrastructure and parks Theo Panagopoulos said feedback received from the community in the initial phase of the project was positive and the two resulting plan options would allow for the further growth and development of the precinct. “The major difference is option two shows a parcel of land that’s not currently in council ownership so there is potential for

the park to expand,” he said. “However, the council would be required to purchase that in the future if the need was there to do so. It is a natural extension of the park area and would be handy if the council did own it.” Mr Panagopoulos said it was up to the community now to decide what was the more suitable plan. “We’re waiting for the feedback from the community to tell us what we should be doing in this precinct,” he said. “It is the community’s park, we’re just the custodians of it.” Copies of the draft plan are available from the council’s Hovell Street office, Wodonga Library, Felltimber Community Centre, Baranduda Community Centre and online under ‘Latest News’ at wodonga.vic.gov.au Submissions must be received at the council’s office by 5pm Friday, 17 August.

Clothes store shuts up shop By BLAIR THOMSON PARACHUTE clothing store has closed after more than 20 years in business. Fighting back tears, owner Kristina White said she had loved her time working in the store, but sales and profit had been declining for about two years. “It’s very sad but the times aren’t very good at the minute,� she said. “We have a lot of people coming in saying that they can get stuff online, sometimes cheaper and with more variety. “When we first started there was less competition and eBay wasn’t as big as it is now.�

Ms White and her husband Andrew have owned the Albury Centro business for a decade. Kristina said the first seven or eight years had been profitable. “I’d say sales would be down between 10 and 20 percent and the costs have increased,� she said. “There’s about five staff at the moment and only one has found another job. “We’ve been quite lucky over the years with staff; we’ve employed about 20 young girls who have all been really lovely.� Ms White said despite the store closing, it wasn’t all bad news for the retail sector.

“I haven’t even thought about what I’ll do next,â€? she said. “I’d love to go back into retail but I don’t know if I’d own another store, maybe just work in one of the local shops. “There are certainly lots of shops around and other businesses coming here that will be looking for lots of staff. “I’d like to say thanks to the local community and all of our staff. “It’s been great, we’ve had an absolutely wonderful time here.â€? Need to grow agriculture education By BLAIR THOMSON GREATER investment needs to be made in the future of the agricultural industry, according to a local school principal. Mark Doecke, principal at St Paul’s College in Walla Walla, said there was a shortage of students interested in the sector. “We would like to see the government invest more money in agricultural education,� he said. “I think people think agriculture is old fashioned and a dying industry, but in fact Australia’s agriculture industry is so competitive with the rest of the world because we do keep up. “We compete on the world stage with countries that are highly subsidised, so I think what we need to do is sell agriculture. “It can be a pretty sexy subject.� About a quarter of the independent schools’ 231 students learn about agriculture, which often leads to further education and jobs in the industry. “I think we’re doing what we can for a school of this size,� Mr Doecke said. “It’s very hands on, very practical, but at the same time there’s a lot of new technologies that

are being used. “So it’s not just theory, it’s also got a healthy amount of keeping in touch with the newest developments. “We have quite a few students go through who become agronomists, go into vet related industries that apply to stock, and probably another area is water resource technology and the whole management of water resources.� The school incorporates a farm and also runs an equine program. “If the government is serious in addressing the shortage of workers in agriculture, more needs to be done to support those schools financially that are at the coalface of teaching agriculture education,� Mr Doecke said. “A recent report says that by 2014 mining is going to drop somewhat and I think that’s the start of a real opportunity to say okay, lets have a fresh look at agriculture. “It’s about government and private enterprise working together, and schools like us, and it’s something the entire community has an interest in.�

Open-top, fast times By TREVOR JACKSON BORDER motorsport has again been well represented on the weekend with Tampered Motorsport and Matt Chahda taking to Wakefield Park circuit in a Mazda MX5. Chahda, who recently stepped up to Formula Ford racing, was approached by team owner Adam Ronke to drive the car and revelled at the opportunity to jump back into a sedan. The open-top Mazda proved a challenge but Chahda was on the pace early and finished the weekend with a third place position in his class. “I was happy with how I went overall,” Chahda said. “The car was a bit underpowered so I had to gain all my ground around the corners, which made it fun. They are quick cars cornering …

they’d be close to what the Formula Fords are able to do.” Chahda’s best race position for the weekend was a second place but he felt he learnt a lot about the track through the six races and the lack of power helped hone his race-craft. “It was just a low-powered engine,” he said. “It was never a race-built engine where all the other guys were in turbo cars and all had bigger cams and everything. It was slower in a straight line so I learnt a lot about positioning yourself well to take the corners faster and gain the ground you had to.” Chahda said he felt it also showed he had the ability to jump into a different car and be on the pace quickly, having set a fast time in the first session. And Ronke was more than pleased with the effort. “It’s the fastest the car’s ever been,” he said.

ROTARY Club of Albury Wodonga Sunrise has kicked off on the Border with sport high on the agenda to promote the youth of the region. The club plans to attract young professionals who may not be able to meet during a lunch break or evening but can participate in an early morning breakfast meeting. The first major project for the club will be a netball event, the Corporate Netball Blitz, to be held on 3 August at The Scots School Albury. With the assistance of ANZ bank, the major sponsor for the Australian ANZ Championship netball competition, the club has managed to secure the services of Melbourne Vixens players Kate Beveridge and Ashlee Howard and NSW Swifts player Samantha May. The three players will be on hand to referee and provide coaching and advice to all participants. Interim club president Conor Noonan said he was excited about the prospect of the new club and was looking forward to working with young professionals on the Border. “The youth agenda will be the primary focus, youth leadership and assisting youth in whatever form it may be” he said. “We’ll get behind that agenda and sport is going to be a major part of that.” Mr Noonan said it was a great opportunity for the club to bring Australian netballers to the region. “Our first major project is the netball event,” Mr Noonan said. “What we’re trying to achieve on the third of August is basically a day or an afternoon where we will have a clinic with students from the secondary schools in the area. They can come along and participate and they’ll be coached by three Australian netballers. “In the evening we’ll have a corporate event,

Small in stature but big on style By TREVOR JACKSON IT’S probably reasonable to say Hyundai built its reputation in Australia on the back of the muchloved Excel. The little Korean car is still fondly spoken of, with a large proportion of Australian motorists either having owned one, or knowing someone who did. Since then Hyundai has continued to build a loyal following with a wide range of models from the basic to the luxury. With the ever-rising cost of fuel Australian motorists are becoming more frugal but still want a decent level of comfort in a

small car; enter the i30. The i30 was introduced with much hype. Claims of European styling, a spacious cabin and competitive performance and fuel consumption figures set the scene. Australian motorists embraced the new model and now the next generation i30 is set to take the popularity of the Korean marque to the next level. Hyundai claim the new i30 redefines the concept of a small premium vehicle and I think they may well be on the mark. Indeed the i30 has been given the stamp of approval by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program, ANCAP with a 5-star safety rating.

Curvaceous lines continue the theme of other new Hyundai models hitting the showroom floors and to me it’s one of the best looking vehicles to come from the marque, eclipsing the out-going model, but then I guess that’s a matter of taste. New engines, including diesel options ensure the i30 will be a viable option in a competitive class. I tested the ‘Active’, the entry-level of the i30 line-up and found no shortage of equipment to keep the average small-car driver happy. Climate control is not standard but plenty of options for adjustment of the air conditioning provides ample scope for comfort. And the air conditioner is run electrically, not off a powerrobbing belt drive system. The power steering is a similar set-up and offers three levels of feel; comfort, standard and sports to provide adjustments for personal taste at the push of a button. A large touch-screen sits in the middle of the dash with adjustments for stereo and other items. The stereo allows connection of the latest technology such as iPod and axillary devices or music can be streamed via the Bluetooth system. The dash is well laid out with two large round gauges for RPM and speed and displays for the trip computer and other necessary information. Parking sensors are standard but not a rear-view camera. Sitting in the pilot’s seat the i30 offers enough seat adjustment to provide a comfortable position for most drivers. The steering wheel feels good, although not leather and this level of trim, with adjustments for such features as the cruise control falling easily to hand. Visibility is good with electrically-adjustable heated mirrors. Rear-passenger leg and head room is more than acceptable and boot space is adequate. The 1.8 litre petrol motor in the test vehicle was coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, equipped with my favourite sequential-style manual mode.

On the road performance is snappy around town with the choice of manual shifting adding more control across the rev range. I found the full automatic option to work well but somehow prefer that feeling of control the manual mode offers; again a matter of taste. Out on the freeway the little Hyundai reaches the legal limit comfortably and road noise seems negligible. Indeed the stereo offers more than enough volume to enjoy your favourite tunes in comfort. Set the cruise control and the i30 lopes along with little fuss, leaving the driver to concentrate on the more important things; the road and traffic ahead. Handling was impressive on the way to Lake Hume and out around Bellbridge, with the suspension soaking up enough of the rough tarmac to offer a comfortable ride but still providing a sporty feel to inspire confident cornering in most situations. The snappy performance driven through the six speeds offered, specifically in the manual mode, allows the driver to keep the little petrol engine spinning and pulling strongly out of corners and up inclines. In fact, the car is a joy to drive; one of those vehicles that just seems to work well. I felt confident and safe under all road conditions and would have no problem living with an i30. The level of trim provided in the base model is enough to keep most drivers in this class happy, but if you’re after a more refined experience there are two other models offered which inclusions such as GPS, leather trim and reverse camera. Add to that the option of a diesel power-plant and the i30 appears a very viable option to those looking for a small, affordable hatch-back, but don’t want to scrimp on appointments. The i30 is set to tackle the likes of Ford’s Focus or even Volkswagen’s Golf head on and after a couple of days behind the wheel, I think there’s no doubt it will continue to be one of the best selling small cars in the Australian market.

Technology to save lives THE Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has welcomed reports from Europe and the US identifying the safety assist technology (SAT) Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as a potential life-saver. According to ANCAP’s sister organisation, Euro NCAP, real world performance data suggests that AEB can reduce crashes by up to 27 percent. In addition, results from research conducted in the US by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) confirm that insurance claims

on cars fitted with AEB have already reduced by 14 percent. ANCAP CEO Nicholas Clarke says the technology has the potential to significantly reduce the road toll, likening it to the introduction of electronic stability control or the humble seat belt. The technology uses forwardlooking radar, lidar and video cameras to monitor the view ahead of the car and alert the driver of impending dangers. If the driver doesn’t respond to the alerts the car starts to brake itself.

Australian-made Nissan electric vehicle components exported to Japan THE first batch of Australian-made components for Nissan electric vehicles has been exported to Japan from the Nissan Casting Australia Plant (NCAP) in Dandenong, Victoria. The aluminium components include the inverter case, inverter water jacket and water jacket cover for electric vehicles such as the Nissan LEAF, which was launched in Australia last month. “Everyone at Nissan Australia is excited that we are playing such a tangible role in the production of zero emission electric vehicles,� Nissan Australia CEO William F Peffer Jr said .

“To see ‘job number one’ for the electric vehicle parts production finished and exported is a landmark moment for the Nissan casting plant. “These electric vehicle parts are part of more than two million components and accessories made at the Nissan casting plant each year, contributing to the overall growth of success of Nissan both in Australia and globally.� NCAP was awarded an exclusive suite of global manufacturing contracts by its parent company in Japan last year and will eventually produce around $160m in export revenue.

Thousands to flock to Albury for Eisteddfod By BLAIR THOMSON THE ALBURY Wodonga Eisteddfod kicks of tomorrow (Saturday) at the Albury Entertainment Centre. Around 4000 young performers will participate in the annual event, which features dance, music, speech, drama and debating. “It gives them a chance to perform, compete and get constructive feedback,” administration officer Benita Cousins explained. “Their performances are marked and they’re given a placing. “I think for the young kids, they have a lot of fun with their friends, get excited about practising and getting their costumes ready, and for the older ones it’s about the competitive side of it. “It gives them a feel of where they’re at in their fields.” The event runs until 12 August with friends and family members

encouraged to attend. “Anyone can come along and you can purchase tickets at the door,” Ms Cousins said. “And entry is free for seniors on the two Thursdays.” Ms Cousins said modelling from Albury Council estimated the direct economic impact of the event at $632,000. “People come from all over to watch and compete,” she said. “There are a lot of locals from Albury Wodonga, but also Myrtleford, Canberra, Griffith, Yarrawonga, a few from Melbourne and Sydney … it draws in a lot of people.” The festival has grown from humble beginnings as a four day event 25 years ago to become one of the most popular attractions in the region. Col can still make ‘em laugh By BLAIR THOMSON

HE MIGHT be in his 60s, but comedy veteran Col Elliott is as energetic as ever. A quick question about what he’s been up to ends up being a lengthy oneway discussion about everything from his time in the navy to his first venture into live comedy. He’s also fond of switching on one of his swag of accents at the drop of a hat and is effortlessly funny – the kind of guy you see at a party with people crowding round, laughing for hours. Most comedians have an “off” switch for every day life, but for Elliott, who plays at the Commercial Club tonight (Friday), comedy is in his blood. “Stand up is like a work in progress,” he told NewsWeekly. “It doesn’t stop. “I guess it’s a bit like songwriters, you just keep doing it, you get different ideas and it’s a great exercise for the brain.” Elliott spent seven years in the navy having originally joined “for a free soup”, and started performing with fellow officers in Singapore. When he left the navy at 23, he had no job, little money and few prospects. Comedy seemed like a good option, and after appearing on Kevin Dennis New Faces and Bert Newton’s radio show, people starting taking notice. “Back in those days when I started, there weren’t a lot of comics,” he explained. “Today it’s a really cool thing to be a comic, everybody’s a comedian. “It’s now a form of entertainment that just relates to people, picking out the idiosyncrasies of other people and our way of life “It’s never been politically correct, but 10 years after I started, along came Kevin Bloody Wilson who really pushed it harder, then Rodney Rude, and they’re a lot heavier than I am in a lot of ways. “But sure, my show is definitely an adult show.” Elliott’s performances cover all facets of comedy, including stand up, characters, conversation comedy and musical numbers. He has stuck with a core group of characters over the years, with Chooka the Roadie, Giuseppe Lasagne and Slugger Mulligan among the best known. “You’re constantly writing for those

He returns to Albury tonight. characters,” he said. “I love doing Chooka, those lines like, ‘my girlfriend’s not talking to me any more ... she reckons I’m a stalker ... well, she’s not my girlfriend right now, not yet.” “It’s more than just standing in front of your mates, making them laugh. “They’re going to laugh because they know you, they love you, they’ve got an empathy for you, but you’ve got to stand in front of people as a comedy entertainer and make people that you’ve never met before laugh. “If you can do that and get someone genuinely pissing their pants, then you know yep, I’ve made it.” Elliott was once so convincing as Chooka – a character based on an old roadie – a journalist thought he was a real person. “A guy from the Daily Mirror in London came up and said ‘Hello Col,

I’d like to do a little piece on you’,” he explained. “‘I’ve got most of your info from your manager, but I would like to have a little bit of a word with your roadie who opened the show’. “I looked at him thinking he’s taking the piss but I went backstage, changed back into Chooka and did the interview as Chooka. “It wasn’t until three days later that the bloke rang to say he felt like a bloody idiot. “He thought it was another person. “That’s the best compliment you can get.” Elliot said he still gets a buzz out of performing, viewing it as a privilege, rather than a job. Big expectations in final Batman film, but it’s not quite there MOVIE: The Dark Knight Rises (M) DURATION: 165 minutes IT WAS always going to be tough to follow up the immensely popular previous Batman instalment, The Dark Knight. That film started off at a cracking pace and never slowed down, with Heath Ledger’s inspiring performance one of the best you will ever see, forever leaving us wondering what could have been. Set eight years later, The Dark Knight Rises opens with Gotham City in a state of relative peace. The Joker has been banished to fading memory and life has returned to normal. Batman is no longer needed, nor wanted, after taking the blame for Harvey Dent’s crimes and Bruce Wayne spends his time in near solitude in his mansion, having almost given up on life.

It’s not until muscle-bound terrorist leader Bane (Tom Hardy) emerges from the underground that the Batsuit is again needed, and Master Wayne hobbles into action. While it’s great in parts, the problem with this film is it takes too long to kick into gear and the story is too confusing. Running 15 minutes shy of three hours, the first half of the movie is a little boring. An hour could have been slashed from the runtime without losing anything, and would have made things clearer. Like The Joker, Bane is an evil man who simply wants to bring death and destruction to the world. Equipped with a metal face mask which makes his voice sound like Darth Vader, he’s a truly scary guy but doesn’t have anywhere near the impact of Ledger.

His dialogue is often muddled by the vocal effects, too. There’s also an element of realism missing from the film. Bane has the opportunity to finish off Batman on at least half-a-dozen occasions, but pauses, delivers a semiwitty line, and he escapes, and Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman just doesn’t feel right. It’s like the creators, knowing this is the conclusion to the series, have jammed in every last idea and drawn everything out to make the most of the remaining time. There are also too many characters. It might sound like this movie is a stinker. But there are some brilliant moments, and despite all the criticism, it’s not a bad film overall. It just feels like it could have been much, much better.

Buyers now looking at energy efficiency A VERY topical issue is our energy costs. I for one had not seen this to be a major issue when purchasing electrical items until recently. I started to research televisions available in today’s market. The best authority we have in Australia is the government site www.energyrating.gov.au I decided to go to the Origin Energy site to understand what I paid for my electricity. A little confusing as the prices quoted were less GST however the credit card fees include GST. I wondered why the site would quote excluding GST and provide a calculator to work out the extra 10%. Back to the main issue, using the energy rating calculator of large screen TVs from 130cm to 150cm and the figure quoted by Origin at 34.42c cents per kilowatt hour, the figure staggered me at the difference between the best and the worst major brand TVs. The best was the Philips 55� LED LCD Smart TV at $867 over 10 years to a staggering $3297 for a Samsung 59� Plasma TV. Some lesser brand TVs are worse.

Growth suburbs provide housing for thousands LAST weekend the Sunday Age reported that there were large numbers of homes for sale in a range of the city’s outer suburbs. On the face of it, this appeared concerning; however, analysis of the local market and the role of those suburbs in housing our growing population shows that it’s not the case. The fact is that the city has always had growth suburbs with lots of homes for sale. Forty years ago it was suburbs such as Fawkner; and today it’s the likes of Doreen. It is remarkable just how many homes have been built and sold in those locations. For instance, the ABS has reported that in Derrimut, Point Cook and Werribee 15,875 homes have been sold and moved into over the past decade. When contrasted with the 2,961 reported for sale, this does not sound nearly

as much. And almost the entire suburbs of Doreen and Merdna have been built in that time, with 5,581 homes added. It was reported there were 3,718 homes for sale there. However, as any resident there will tell you, 65 percent of homes don’t have for sale signs on them. Clearly, these numbers include the pipeline of supply to ensure the community’s housing needs can be met in an affordable manner. The fact that two years ago The Age reported concerns that there were not enough homes for sale and now there are too many, shows nothing more than the usual development cycle in operation. The development cycle is subject to the same rises and falls that are present in the broader real estate market.

SO, with no Ovens and Murray football last weekend what did you do? Maybe you got those jobs knocked over around the house that have been calling to you each week. Perhaps you went and watched some district football, rugby league or netball. Maybe shopping, playing with kids, housework or even cooking (doubt it). Some Ovens and Murray fans felt so depraved of footy they travelled to Wagga to watch our stars compete in the Australian Country Championships. Whatever you did in the beautiful winter sunshine last week I bet with only ďŹ ve rounds to go you thought to yourself at some stage, “Gee I can’t wait ‘til footy is backâ€?, and the good news is, it is! Firstly on the Australian Country Championships our O&M boys must be congratulated for representing their clubs, their league and their state, and doing such with excellence and dignity. Four of our O&M lads were selected in the All Australian side; Albury’s Joel Mackie and Josh Maher, North Albury’s Dan Leslie and Wangaratta Rovers defender Tyson Hartwig and countless others competed over the carnival. It no doubt reemphasised that the Ovens and Murray is without doubt one of, if not the, premier country Australian football leagues. Before I preview this weekend’s Ovens and Murray football action that sees us with just ďŹ ve games left before ďŹ nals, I want to touch on the incident that left former Wodonga Bulldog and current North Melbourne vice captain Jack Ziebell out of the game for four weeks. As someone who has been involved in the game for many years I was disgusted to see Jack penalised for doing what has been drummed into every child’s head since they picked up the sport, “attack the footballâ€?. Endless junior coaches, parents and umpires have promised kids you can’t do anything wrong if the football is your sole target and that you will get looked after if your eyes are on the ball ‌ well it appears not. Nobody likes seeing people get hurt, that’s a given but it is also unavoidable sometimes. To penalise someone for playing by the rules is a farce. I really hope for the future of our great game that this ridiculous penalty Jack has received is a one-off mistake and players all over the country

continue to make that red pill their number one objective. Lavington v Albury This weekend sees yet another decorated former AFL footballer enter the competition in Tadhg Kennelly. The former Sydney Swans premiership player will pull on the powerful yellow and black guernsey as the Tigers take on the Lavington Panthers at the Lavington Panthers Oval. Just as his former Swans team mate Barry Hall was on his debut you could expect the Irishman to be a little rusty but his inclusion into an already highly efďŹ cient back line is certainly not going to make scoring against Albury any easier. Lavington need to show their supporters, and in fact themselves that they can be a genuine contender with a much improved effort this week. The playing talent is deďŹ nitely there however the Panthers can’t seem to get it to click for four quarters. Their midďŹ eld guns in Matt Pendergast and Luke Garland continued their ďŹ ne seasons with great showings at the Australian Country Championships, but they need more assistance from others, whereas the Tigers always have an even spread of contributors and goals kickers, something that makes them near impossible to hold. The Tigers still have their eye on ďŹ nishing top and won’t let the Panthers spoil their plans. Albury by 36 points. In other games, Wodonga Raiders should keep alive their faint hopes of a top three ďŹ nish with a victory over North Albury. A vastly improved Wodonga could pinch an away win at the foothills when they travel to Mytleford, Yarrawonga will be too strong for Corowa Rutherglen and the all Wang Derby and should see a Barry Hall inspired victory for the Rovers

Local Sport Thunder powers forward By BLAIR THOMSON ALBURY Thunder remains undefeated after the team notched up its 10th victory on Saturday. The Group 9 title is looking more likely after the side’s best start in years, sitting four points clear on the ladder. About 1200 people attended Greenfield Park to witness a dominant local display against Southcity, with the home team winning 48 to 18. And in an encouraging sign of things to come, the Under 16s, League Tag, Under 18s and Reserve Grade teams all won their matches. Club president Rick O’Connell said the success of the side was bringing more spectators to games in the AFL-dominated area. “Winning certainly does create that extra interest,” he said. “People want to see for themselves what the fuss is about, what the team’s doing. “The crowds at our home games have been up by about 10 percent and the crowd on the weekend was the biggest I‘ve seen at Greenfield Park since my involvement with the team began in 2004. “We’ve got a lot more juniors playing the game than in previous years too.” According to Mr O’Connell, the Thunder has benefited from a solid pre-season. “They started their preparation before Christmas and got into serious training a lot earlier than normal,” he said. “Their fitness is certainly something that is really showing through. “We’ve got a quality playing group, an excellent coach, and just the general feel and culture around the club is really positive. “It’s a very committed group.” Mr O’Connell said the Thunder’s strong performance in the Group 9 division was adding to

“We’ve definitely got a good chance.” While knocking off the equal-third team on Saturday has put the Thunder in strong flag contention, Mr O’Connell said the side was trying not to get ahead of itself. “You come back to all the cliches, one week at a time, don’t get ahead of yourself, get all the little things right,” he said.

“But that’s true, that’s what we’ll be doing over coming weeks.” Saturday’s game was opened by a match between the NSW Country representative team and the Victorian squad, which NSW won 60 to nil. The Thunder will take on eighth-placed Wagga Brothers in an away game tomorrow (Saturday).

Strong win but still more work needed By TREVOR JACKSON A PLAYOFF spot is a reality for the Bandits after a strong 77-61 win on the weekend against Hobart Chargers at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. The home side was motivated to take a victory after going down to the Chargers in Hobart last time the two teams met. They now sit in third spot on the SEABL south conference ladder with just a handful of games remaining. The Bandits took the ascendancy from the tip off and lead throughout but still needed to call on all the intensity they could muster to ensure victory. Mohamed Ntumba topped the score charts with a big double double consisting of 22 points and 18 rebounds. Alex Opacic fell just one rebound short with 13 points and nine rebounds while Ben Hol-

lis had another big night on the boards, pulling down 17 rebounds. And the charismatic Jazzmar Ferguson rallied the crowd down the stretch in typical fashion, calling for a bit of noise to help the home side across the line. Coach Brad Chalmers said he was pleased to take the victory after what he considered a sloppy effort when the teams previously met in Hobart. “The intensity levels weren’t quite there whereas this week, in particular early, we made sure we were really focused and really on the ball and put a lot of pressure on them,” he said. “I thought we really dominated the game and if we had shot a little bit better we may have won by a little bit more.” Chalmers said they needed to focus now with just four games remaining before the playoffs

and just one more home game. “I don’t think we’ve been great at home sometimes,” he conceded. “We’ve probably relied on the comforts of home and haven’t really played with the right energy and hence we’ve lost a few games at home we should have won. “Friday night we were on the ball in terms of we know what we need to do, let’s go and do it, and that was the most pleasing part of it. Now we need to go and do that more often to get ourselves a playoff spot.” The Bandits face a tough road trip this weekend with Mount Gambier and Geelong.
