Build it now, say ambos By BLAIR THOMSON WODONGA paramedics are sick of waiting for a new ambulance station to be built. NewsWeekly believes Ambulance Victoria is looking to purchase land under compulsory acquisition, with the project said to be starting in weeks. Funding for a new station has been available for some time, but finding a suitable site has been a sticking point, with several blocks of land considered and rejected. But an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson would not confirm the plans, saying a number of land options were being considered. “There’s nothing locked in concrete,” the spokesperson said. “We’re looking at a number of options.” Ambulance Victoria Wodonga branch manager Mike Fuery said he believed the new station was getting closer to being built, but hadn’t heard of compulsory acquisition plans. “Everyone’s waiting with bated breath, it’s tedious and our patience is being tested,” he said. “As time goes on, we are getting closer. “Everyone’s pretty tired and hoping for some sort of news very soon. “But to put a timeframe on it is something we can’t do.”

WAITING… Mike Fuery says paramedics are tired of waiting for a second ambulance station to be built in Wodonga, and want to see action. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON Mr Fuery said the idea for a new station had been raised six years ago. “We’ve now got the money, we just need to secure a new site,” he said. “That’s the big thing. “It would be nice to have an announcement soon.” The station will be located somewhere in the southern and western region of the city to service the area’s ageing population. The current station in South Street will be retained and possibly refurbished under the plans.

“Where we are now has strategic value, so we want to keep that,” Mr Fuery explained. “And the data we have suggests where we need the new one in terms of workload.” Mr Fuery said the lack of a second station wasn’t putting lives at risk yet, and wasn’t affecting response times, with the new station aiming to futureproof ambulance needs. Wodonga Council had suggested several possible locations for the new station that didn’t fit in with Ambulance Victoria plans.

Pipeline to the future THE LOCAL economy is benefiting from the coal seam gas industry. Pipe maker Iplex has doubled its workforce since taking on a contract to produce coal seam gas pipes 18 months ago. Mark Jones and Chrissie Edwards, pictured, say there is plenty of work at the Albury factory to keep them busy. For the full story, another BLAIR THOMSON picture, see page 5.

A good sport is more important WE all love winning, nobody likes losing. Sport started the trend, sadly life in general has followed suit. However, one learns the best, and longest-lasting, lessons out of being beaten. Just ask James Magnussen. Earlier this week, he said he learnt more about himself in two days than he had in the previous 20 years. Why? Because Magnussen lost. He (and virtually everybody else) thought he and his 4x100m swim relay team were on the podium before they had even seen the pool. But Magnussen was a bigger loser out of the water, proved by how he reacted when interviewed - and more so when his colleagues were talking. He moped around like a sullen, spoilt schoolboy - and the reliable word is it’s not the first time he hasn’t shown common courtesy or respect for his “teammates. Now, Magnussen’s bounced back - and hopefully he will be better behaved for the rest of what looks likely to become a decorated career. And, hopefully in his wardrobe of video highlights, will be one of his (non) interview, just to keep him levelled. And we all need to be levelled from time to time. Sure, he’s human, but he’s a role model. And in competition, as in life, “certainties do get rolled. It may only happen every four years, but the Olympics is always full of surprises and drama. And learning experiences for those at the centre of the action, and those on the sidelines. For those of you already sick of the Olympics, there’s only nine days to go.

You be the judge NOW that the perpetrators of the bogus pamphlet have come forward, not out of any sense of righting wrongs mind you, but that they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, the question needs to be asked, “Why?â€?. That it was satirical political hijinx, as claimed by one, beggars belief. If the distribution of the pamphlet had not been caught on CCTV, and thanks to Ken Goff for making it public, I would have been left to ďŹ ght off the wrong perceptions in the lead up to the election campaign. And that they are sorry for what they have done also seems to be far from reality, as the other perpetrator was adamant that the other seven councillors also faced some sort of campaign malice in the next four weeks. I don’t know what action can be taken now that we know who was responsible. I do know this sort of behaviour is not what I want to see in the lead up to the local government elections, this is the sort of political mayhem one expects from our political peers in state and federal circles. I want to focus on the real issues of interest and concern to the Albury ratepayers. You be the judge. What, if anything, should happen to the two responsible for the bogus pamphlets? Is this the sort of behaviour you want to see from various camps in the lead up to the elections on 8 September? Or do you expect that candidates should focus on the real issues? Let me have your thoughts at comments@henkvandeven.com.au Cr Henk van de Ven Written and authorised by Henk van de Ven, 416 Wilson St., Albury NSW 2640. Advertisement

RED TIES, RED CARPET‌ Liam Shay is congratulated by Cr. Ed Foulston (middle) and Rodney Wangman.

Red carpet out for Liam A WODONGA teenager who was revived after “dying of a heart attack, is one of 36 finalists in Wodonga’s RED Carpet Youth Awards for 2012. Liam Shay, 17, has been named as a finalist in three categories, including Youth Ambassador, with winners to be announced at a gala dinner at Catholic College, Wodonga, tomorrow night. Liam suffered a cardiac arrest while on a family holiday in New Zealand in April, 2011. He went without oxygen for almost an hour, which resulted in a brain injury. The Catholic College Wodonga student spent several months in hospital and rehabilitation in Melbourne. But his determination to return home saw him back with his family in August, well ahead of expectations. Soon after, Liam had returned to his English class at school and was volunteering for the Interchange Program run by Upper Murray Family Care. This year has seen Liam return to Year 11 studies and being actively involved in various community services despite his health condition. Wodonga deputy mayor Ed Foulston said Liam was just one of many inspirational young people to be nominated for the RED Carpet Youth Awards this year.

“Almost 90 nominations were received across nine categories and 66 youths were interviewed by a panel of judges, he said. “The standard of nominations received was extremely high and the inclusion of two new categories, the Youth Organisational Support Award and Youth Sports Volunteer Award, has been a popular addition. Albury Wodonga Community College (AWCC) has this year extended its sponsorship of the awards, committing $6000 per year for the next five years. CEO Rodney Wangman said the awards had many benefits for the college, with a number of students aged 15 to 19 choosing an alternate secondary education pathway. “These students, like all Wodonga youth, are to be admired for their commitment to their studies and the community, he said. The guest speaker at the gala dinner is Australian Youth Climate Coalition’s (AYCC) director of operations, Jem Bamford. Jem has volunteered as one of three national grassroots co-ordinators for the past two years, co-managing AYCC’s 300-strong volunteer network.

Rain delays pool opening By TREVOR JACKSON WODONGA residents could be without an outdoor pool for the beginning of the summer, due to rain delaying the opening of the new WAVES facility at White Box Rise. Wodonga council decommissioned the Stanley Street pool at the end of last swimming season, prior to the completion of the new facility, with the intent of opening the new WAVES centre on 1 December. But a loss of more than 30 days due to rain has resulted in a possible delay to the opening date. Wodonga council’s director planning and infrastructure Leon Schultz said there was no revised completion date, but added it was not inconceivable the delay would be similar to the amount of time lost. “We do know the contractor has the ability

to claw back some of the lost time and he will obviously be doing that,” Mr Schultz said. “We’ll be working very hard with him to try and achieve some claw-back of those days that have been lost. “While completion was scheduled for the end of October, we believe we will be delayed by a number of weeks. That obviously has an impact on the opening date. “Similarly, we’ll try to shorten the commissioning phase of the project so we can still open the facility in December.” Mr Schultz said he was sure the contractor would have used the best information he had available at the time and he “may or may not have” included a number of wet-weather days. Mr Schultz noted the Wodonga residents had other options with a 25-metre indoor pool at the sports and leisure centre and other outdoor venues in Albury.

TRAUMATISED… Nadia Mellor has counselled between 20 and 30 women traumatised by pro-life protesters. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON

‘Stop the protests’ By BLAIR THOMSON A LEADING local doctor wants the public to rally against the anti-abortion protesters who meet weekly outside the Englehardt Street clinic. Members of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants gather outside the termination centre each Thursday with signs, pamphlets and plastic foetuses. Dr Pieter Mourik, a retired obstetrician, met with senior Albury police members this week in a bid to force the protesters to move on, but was told there was nothing officers could do unless complaints of intimidation were made. “Yes, we all know they have a legal right to be there, but do they have a moral right?” he said. “And the vast majority of the Albury Wodonga community doesn’t think they have a moral right. “I think they’ve got to be made to feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. “If the whole community is against them they will stop … they’re not being challenged and I’m going to challenge them.” Dr Mourik said if the aim of the group was to stop terminations, then women shouldn’t be accosted when leaving the clinic, describing that as “punishment” for their actions. “The whole community is sick of it, they’re legally thumbing their nose at the whole community,” he said. “They should be protesting somewhere else.” Counsellor Nadia Mellor said she had spoken to between 20 and 30 women traumatised by the protesters and had herself felt intimidated. “I think with good counselling, most people are able to deal with the decisions they’ve made,” she said. “What they can’t deal terribly well with is being confronted by these protesters. “In a small rural area where women could easily be known by the protesters and know that other people then know about their business, that’s traumatising as well.”

POSITION AVAILABLE

NewsWeekly tried to contact several protesters without response. Peta Evans told NewsWeekly in March the group had no plans to stop and admitted their actions could cause “heartache or difficulties” for women. Dr Mourik said he accepted the group’s right to protest, but said they should move away from the clinic and stop confronting women. “How dare they tell women they can’t do something because they don’t believe in it,” he said. “This has been going on for too long and they’re too comfortable.”

SUCCESS‌ Kate Duncan was pleased her effort was noticed by judges at the national cooking competition. Picture: TREVOR JACKSON

Kate, queen of the kitchen BORDER cook Kate Duncan has taken out the Jamaica Blue 2012 Golden Cuisine Challenge. Employed at the Albury franchise, Kate beat more than 75 competitors from across Australia and New Zealand, many of those qualified chefs. Though working in the industry for 10 years, Kate has not trained as a chef and was surprised to win. “I was totally shocked,â€? she said. “There were a couple of qualified chefs, people who have not only been with Jamaica Blue, but in other restaurants for years. “I started working in kitchens when I was 17 and moved to Albury for uni. Even then I worked in cafes, bars and restaurants ‌ it’s what I like to do.â€? Kate was required to design a breakfast dish from a list of ingredients and chose mushrooms stuffed with breadcrumbs, pine nuts and a tomato

salsa, served on sourdough and avocado with pancetta on the side and a drizzle of herb oil, obviously impressing the judges. But Albury franchise owner John Miseski said the competition wasn’t just about the food. “The competition is designed to showcase some of the quality staff we have, he said. “It’s to give good feedback to the stores and to give the staff incentive and recognition of a job well done. Kate had to design her recipe and cost it, keeping in mind it has to be for our type of environment. Her dish was fantastic. “But it’s also about how she handled herself, her demeanour, her personality. The way she holds herself and walks into a task obviously blew the judges away. We’re very proud of her. Kate won a $1000 travel voucher and plans to use it for a holiday with her son.

Shoes will tell stories BORDER Baptist women will tomorrow show they care for Bhutanese women. Wodonga District Baptist Church is hosting the Freedom Women’s Conference, where women will donate gift cards to assist the needs of recently re-located Bhutanese women and their families. The event, titled Stepping Up, picks up on women’s love of shoes to tell their stories. The motif for the conference is a red shoe made up of lots of images of different types of shoes. “Different shoes are required for different circumstances, organiser Mandy Stark said. “We’re all stepping up, stepping out or step-

ping through something or other in our lives. “Presenters will share personal journeys which will encourage and challenge us to move forward in places where we may be stuck in our lives. “It’s a day of pampering, pilates and looking at personal ‘colours’ for stepping out with confidence. Or women can chill out and chat over a latte. The conference runs between 9am and 5pm at the Wodonga District Baptist Church, 154 Melrose Drive, Wodonga. The cost is $45 ($40 concession), which includes lunch, morning and afternoon teas. Telephone (02) 6056 1777 for bookings.

A day to change a life CANCER Council NSW wants communities to volunteer, donate or sell merchandise on Daffodil Day on 24 August. Every second Australian who lives to 85 will be diagnosed with cancer - a disease which doesn’t discriminate and stretches across all cultures and communities. “In the south west region alone, around 1580 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year,” community relations co-ordinator Laura Thomas said. “This is a scary number, but one Cancer Council NSW can beat with enough support and funding.” Cancer Council NSW needs more than 275 volunteers for Daffodil Day events across the south west region - and is urging people to volunteer, whether distributing

merchandise boxes, setting up stalls or selling daffodils. “We need the help of everyone to provide hope to the hundreds of people fighting cancer in our community,” Ms Thomas said. Visit www.daffodilday.com.au to find out how you can help.

Wodonga Jewellers PIPES… Mark Jones with a coal seam gas pipe.

Picture: BLAIR THOMSON

Pipes a dream for locals By BLAIR THOMSON A LOCAL pipe manufacturer and the Border economy are benefiting from the controversial coal seam gas industry. Iplex Pipeline’s Albury factory has doubled its workforce since securing a contract to produce coal seam gas pipes 18 months ago. Up to 140 tonnes of pipe are produced daily at the Terry Court factory by 85 staff. “It has been a rapid expansion,” plant manager Mark Jones said. “With other businesses struggling, we’ve been lucky enough to pick up plenty of jobs and it’s kept us afloat.

“We’ll probably start slowing down soon but as far as I’m aware there are a few more stages happening. “I don’t know whether we’ll get more work down here or at one of the other sites.” The raw materials come by train from Melbourne before being trucked to the factory and turned into pipe using heat and pressure. The pipes are then sent to Queensland. “With the upturn in work, we have put new machines in,” Mr Jones said. “We’ve gone from producing probably about 40 tonnes of pipe a day a year and a half ago to 120 tonnes a day on average now.

“We’ve filled all the space we’ve got in the factories, but we’ve always got further room to develop if we need to.” Coal seam gas has emerged as a major industry in Australia, particularly in Queensland, but has been criticised for its adverse environmental effects. Mr Jones said he didn’t want to talk about “that side of it”, but said the company hadn’t had any problems from protesters. “We just make the pipes,” he said. “It’s definitely good for the local economy. It also has a ‘flow-on’ effect with other trades, like the timber mill and all the other things associated with the production.”

‘Golden-fingers’ to steal show By TREVOR JACKSON AUSTRALIA’S winner of the Sydney international piano competition will present a recital at St Matthew’s Church, Albury, tomorrow night. James Guan is only 21, but already has an impressive list of achievements to his name. He has performed numerous solo recitals in China and Barcelona, was a featured artist at the City Recital Hall in Sydney in 2008, won the Sydney Conservatorium keyboard unit’s concerto competition and was a 2009 finalist in the Vlassenko competition in Brisbane. James will begin with Mozart’s Sonata K.333, followed by Sonata No. 2 Op 35 from Chopin. After interval, he will perform Ravel’s Une barque sur l’ocean from Miroirs and finish with Rachmaninov’s Moments Musicaux Op 16. Murray Conservatorium assistant director Jenny Pietsch was pleased the young artist would perform here - and

said the evening was sure to be entertaining for a wide cross-section of the community. “The idea is to bring good quality music performance to regional audiences, Ms Pietsch said. “Often being in regional areas, we miss out on the things city people take for granted, so we’re very fortunate to have somebody of his calibre in Albury. Ms Pietsch said this would be one of the best performances held recently on the Border. She also considered it a “must-see concert for music students, not just those studying piano. “I specifically think young people, to see another person who’s not too far above their age bracket - this is an Australian who’s come up and gone through his lessons - he can do this so therefore they can too, Ms Pietsch said. “I think the fact he’s young is fantastic.

St Matthew’s Church Archdeacon Peter MacLeod-Miller said it was a great opportunity for music lovers to listen to a high-quality recital in what he considered the best acoustic setting in the region. “The church has traditionally been one of the greatest patrons of the arts, and particularly of music, he said. “I think it’s great to continue the tradition, and also in Albury’s most significant acoustic setting, doing honour to a tremendous potential. “It’s fantastic the Border will host an international talent at the beginning of his career, rather than at the end of it. We’re very, very happy indeed. Tickets cost $40 for adults, $35 concession, students aged 10-18 are $25, while children under 10 are $5. Group discounts are available. There are 200 seats at the recital. Contact the conservatorium on 6041 4249 for ticket bookings.

Poor teeth cost us billions and millions THE cost to the Australian community through lost productivity because of poor dental health is estimated at $2 billion annually. And research by the Australian Dental Association reveals about one million working days are lost each year in Australia through poor dental health. Also, around 600,000 days of school are missed annually through poor teeth. And the ADA warns things are going to get worse. “There are more than 19 million decayed teeth in Australia and there will be another 11 million decayed teeth each year, the ADA states. To prevent tooth decay: Avoid snacking on sugary or acidic foods and drinks between meals. Some foods like muesli and fruit bars might seem healthy, however, if they are sugary or have a sticky texture, they may increase your risk of tooth decay. Eating calcium rich foods like milk, cheese and yoghurt can help to neutralise acids and protect your teeth. Brush twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste – brushing can reduce your risk of decay by 25 per cent. Floss once a day – flossing removes food from between your teeth, which brushing can’t reach. If the food is left between your teeth and forms plaque, you increase your risk of tooth decay. Drink fluoridated tap water – Studies have estimated an 18-40 per cent reduction in tooth decay when children drink fluoridated tap water in conjunction with other sources of fluoride. Chew sugar-free gum – There is evidence chewing sugar-free gum increases the production of saliva, which helps protect your teeth against decay. OPEN WIDE‌ A lady has treatment on her teeth.

Beating tooth decay TOOTH decay is Australia’s most common health problem, being five times more prevalent in children than asthma. Around 11 million newly decayed teeth develop each year and according to government reports, it’s also the second most costly diet-related disease in Australia, which is all the more concerning given 90 per cent of all dental disease is preventable. Research commissioned by the Australian Dental Association (ADA) reveals an alarming 57 per cent of Australians expect at some stage in their lives they will develop tooth decay, a condition that can be unsightly, painful and irreversible. However, ADA’s oral health committee chairman Dr Peter Alldritt says no one should expect to get tooth decay or accept that the condition is inevitable as it can be prevented with a healthy diet and proper dental care. According to Dr Alldritt, the easiest way to avoid tooth decay is to be aware of what you eat and drink. “The number one cause of tooth decay is consumption of sugary foods and drinks on a regular basis, he said. “The bacteria in your mouth convert sugars into acids. Over time, acids eat away at the surface of a tooth, attacking the enamel, weakening the tooth and causing decay in the form of holes or cavities. “Preventing tooth decay can be as simple as controlling consumption of sugary or acidic food and drinks between meals, drinking soft drinks through a straw to minimise the acid exposure to your teeth and eating calcium rich foods like cheese and yoghurt to help neutralise acids and protect your teeth. Another easy way to prevent tooth decay is

to maintain healthy oral hygiene habits such as brushing teeth twice a day and flossing once a day, yet more than 30 per cent of Australians admit they are only brushing once daily, with most of us skipping the pre-bed brush and many of us admit we avoid flossing altogether. The study found almost 35 per cent of parents report their children are only brushing once a day with more than 60 per cent accepting their children will get tooth decay at some point in their lifetime. While the habits suggest complacency when it comes to oral care, the survey revealed the overwhelming majority of Australians say decayed teeth and bad breath are the biggest turn-offs on a first date, far more concerning than excessive body odour or poor dress sense. “It’s clear from an aesthetics point of view, healthy teeth are important to us but it’s concerning so many Australians accept they or their children will at some point be affected by decay, Dr Alldritt said. “This doesn’t have to be the case and it certainly shouldn’t make people complacent about their teeth. During Dental Health Week the ADA is urging Australians to rethink their attitudes to tooth decay and not accept or expect it, but rather practice better oral health habits and be aware of the damage certain foods and drinks can cause to teeth. Being aware of what you eat and drink and avoiding copious amounts of sugary or acidic food and beverages is the easiest way to avoid tooth decay altogether. Brushing twice daily, flossing every day and visiting your dentist regularly will also go a long way to avoiding the condition.

Specialised service for 30 years

POOR oral hygiene has many consequences, and one of those may be the need to have dentures fitted. But the need for dentures isn’t always the result of poor oral hygiene, with many other reasons for tooth loss such as gum disease or accidents. Not wearing a mouthguard during sporting activities can result in the loss of one or more teeth and require partial dentures to be fitted. Many options are available for patients in such a situation and one Border business has been specialising in the fitting of dentures, practising from the same location in Dean Street, Albury for more than 30 years. James Sexton operates a denture clinic and dental laboratory, which began as a one-man operation and has grown to employ three other fulltime staff and one part-time staff member. In the past 30 years Mr Sexton has seen a certain amount of change in the industry, most of that being the age demographic now utilising the service. “We see a lot more younger people now for partial dentures, whereas we don’t see many young people for full dentures, unless there’s a problem with their mouth, Mr Sexton said.

“

Complete Dental Care

“Complete dentures are more in the realms of the elderly in this day and age. With fluoride in the water people save their teeth, not like used to be the case years ago. Mr Sexton said one of the biggest changes to have happened in the industry over the years was the introduction of implants to retain dentures. He said the business would work in conjunction with a dentist who would place the implant. The patient then returns to his clinic for the denture to be fitted. “Probably the happiest people who have dentures are the ones who have implants to retain their lower dentures, Mr Sexton said. “It just makes a big difference for their self esteem and confidence. Not everybody’s suitable but for those who are, and those who want to do it, it’s life-changing. It’s more stable, they can eat better, eat a wider range of foods and they just seem all-round happier. Mr Sexton said patients came to his clinic because of the specialised service offered. Having a good working relationship with dentists in the region also allowed Mr Sexton to refer patients should other work need to be undertaken such as crowns or fillings. Those requiring full or partial dentures from either side of the border may be covered through their private health fund or Medicare. Pensioners and Veterans Affairs patients are also catered for.

EVOLVE Orthodontics founder John Brabant will celebrate 30 years of working on the Border next month. Originally from Maroubra in Sydney, Dr Brabant opened a local practice with two other orthodontists in 1982. He took sole control of the business two years ago before relocating it to Thurgoona Street, Albury, and renaming it Evolve Orthodontics. “I decided to reinvent the practice, he explained. “We brought in the latest orthodontic technology and revamped the entire business. “And it’s proven to be a huge success. “We have a wide range of cutting-edge treatments which we use to deliver some fabulous outcomes for our patients. “You only need to look at the before and after pictures on our website to see those results. The success of Evolve was recognised last week when Dr Brabant was awarded the HTC Start-Up award at the Telstra NSW Business Awards in Sydney. One of the reasons Dr Brabant was given the award lies in the fact he gives back to the Border community. He provides 10 disadvantaged children with free orthodontic work each year and formed the hugely-successful Carevan Foundation in 2009, offering free food to those in need. “That’s one of the reasons we were chosen, Dr Brabant said. “What I’m trying to do with disadvantaged

Birallee, the centre full of meat and greet BEFORE you learn his name, one would think the butcher in the Birallee Village Shopping Centre has a major problem with spelling. That’s until genial - and with a couple of knives in hishands it would be silly to call him anything else - Mark Bollinghaus introduces himself. Ah, that’s why his shop is called The Haus of Meat. “I might have The Haus of Meat, but this is the house of everything,” Mark says proudly. He then adds business these days is as much about marketing as it is anything else. So fellow shop owners at the BVSC should be pretty happy. Mark Bollinghaus is a walking and talking advertisement for them all. “This place (the centre) has everything,” he says. “Everything. There’s a major supermarket and shops where you can buy meat, bread, drugs (chemist), newspapers and ... and ... “We’ve got the every day needs for everybody. Park your car at the door, grab a shopping trolley and you’re away. “This is a community centre - and community centres are needed. “Oh sure, we’ve had our challenges and it hasn’t been easy. “The centre has been sold and renovated and for long times nothing happened. But now it is, and people should

give us a go. “Call this Wodonga West, north or whatever, but give us a call. “There’s a big catchment area around here now. It’s getting bigger, but we’re still a community.” And that’s something Helen Goldsworthy can attest to. Helen owns two shops - both named Simple Indulgence at Birallee Village. “I have a lot of repeat customers, a lot,” she said. That’s no wonder, as she specialises in all types of gifts for all types of occasions.“Birallee is becoming very, very busy, because it offers much and it has great parking,” Helen said. However, she admits customer service is what gets people back to the centre. And Helen and her daughter, Tanya Thies, are well known for such. Simple Indulgence started life as a party plan format in 1999. “Our range of gifts is endless, whether it be for yourself, your home, birthdays, anniversaries or for AFL diehards,” Helen said. “Whatever the occasion and whatever you want, we have it.” Shoppers, give yourself a simple indulgence, and pop along to the Birallee Village Shopping Centre - and not just to the shops of that name. You will find what you want, when you want it, in each and every store. And nothing beats shopping in a relaxed atmosphere.

WANT proof how good the Subway store at the Birallee Village is? Well, just watch “the kids”. Students may take their lunch to school, but they often opt for Subway instead. “That’s how much they love us,” store manager Lauren Cocking said.“It’s amazing the number of young people getting into healthier eating, it’s great to see. “And the Birallee Village is getting

busier and busier.” Nearby to Subway and still with dough, Chris and Angela Quirk own Bakers Delight. “We’ve seen many changes over the years and people are getting into healthier eating,” Chris said. “White bread is still our biggest seller, but people are looking for variety with grain and wholemeal breads becoming more popular.

“Hi Fibre Lo-gi loaf and our chia omega 3 loaf have recently become most popular. “We don’t sell day-old bread. Everything’s baked in the store and sold the same day.” And the Quirks are very much “hands-on” owners, often in the kitchen at 2am making sure buyers get the freshest bread there is.

THERE’S a ‘For Lease’ sign which stands on cleared ground alongside the Birallee Village Shopping Centre in Wodonga. “Expressions of interest are sought from prospective occupiers to be part of a new development to be constructed on this site,â€? the sign says. It suggests the land is suitable for retail and medical ofďŹ ces. It wasn’t so long ago, that the land, or more to the point the shopping centre, just wasn’t suitable. Full stop. But how things can change. “For a long time I wanted to get out of here .... now I’m glad we didn’t,â€? is how one shop operator summed up the centre. “For years and years nothing happened here - now everything, and everybody, is coming here.â€? It certainly is. The modern-looking Birallee Tavern, a McDonald’s restaurant and a BP service station shadow the Birallee Village Shopping

Centre on one side - as do the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre and the Felltimber campus of the Wodonga Middle Years College on another. And then there’s the housing. “Once there was nothing here, now we are getting everything, newsagent Marlene Smedley said. Marlene and her brother, Terry Mahony, who has retired through ill-health, opened the business in June, 1986. “There was only a supermarket, a baker and a takeaway shop out there then, Terry said. “We had seven empty shops next to us at one stage. Nobody thought it would go ahead, they wondered who would ever go out there.“It was probably 10 years ahead of itself ... now it’s going really well. The Birallee Village Shopping Centre is a “one-stop shop, so to speak. As they say in real estate, it’s all about location, location, location. That says it best.

Chris and the bakers start at 2am each morning baking a variety of breads from scratch to ensure their customers get the freshest bread in town. COLOURFUL SET… Vonda Bouys and the Falsettos will play a range of hits from the ‘60s at the Jazz Basement next Friday.

Jazz of the ‘60s By BLAIR THOMSON THE SOUNDS and sights of the swinging ‘60s will be brought back to life next Saturday (11 August) when Vonda Bouys and the Falsettos play at the Jazz Basement. Armed with a set list of more than 40 songs, including You Never Can Tell, Downtown, and Da Do Ron Ron, the band is headed by former Border resident Dani Fry. “I used to play in a cover band in Albury years ago called the Plastic Assassins, at places like The Termo and the Lavington Sports Club,” Ms Fry said. “But it’s been a while since I’ve gigged up that way so I’m looking forward to it. “I’ve got lots of family up there who are all musical so it will be good to get back.” The five-piece group, based in Ballarat, dresses up in colourful ‘60s attire for the gigs, complete with wigs and old instruments. “We’re trying to do a resurgence of the dance hall type of thing where we go into country com-

munities and bring their halls back to life,” Ms Fry said. “We’re trying to recreate that scene from the ‘60s and we’ve been searching around for halls. “I believe the ticket says there’s a strictly ‘60s dress code so we’d encourage people to brush off their boots, wigs and beehives and come on down.” The band’s trombone player, Bryn Hills, also hails from the Border. “We put together a jazz group to perform at someone’s wedding,” Ms Fry said, “and we had such a great time that the dozen songs we learnt turned into the 40 we now have on our set list. “At every gig I’ll have a lady come up to me and tell me that her husband hasn’t danced to a certain song for 20 years. “That happens at every single gig. “It is popular with that older age group but the younger age group also gets into the songs.” Doors open at 7.30pm with several hours of music planned. BACK… The Delltones are in Albury tonight for a gig at the Commercial Club.

Dinosaurs of doo-wop By BLAIR THOMSON THE DELLTONES can lay claim to being the oldest band in the world. Formed in 1958, the group is still going strong with original member Ian “Peewee” Wilson at the helm. While all former band members – all 21 of them – have either left the group or passed away, The Delltones have kept that original doo-wop sound alive. The group is like a living, breathing time capsule of a sound that is gradually fading into distant memory. “We’ve been around two years longer than the Rolling Stones,” Wilson said. “The highlights and lowlights are many, but I have very fond memories of that early period. “I remember running out on Sydney Stadium with 10,000 kids and that experience was overwhelming and one that hasn’t left me. “The sound hasn’t changed very much at all since then.” The group is best known for songs Come A Little Bit Closer, Get A Job and Hangin’ Five, from their 19 albums. According to Wilson, The Delltones had been told early into their career that they wouldn’t be around for too long. “It was all new and the people around

us were giving us a lot of advice,” he said. “And part of that advice was don’t give up your day job, this music is just a passing fad and it will all be over very shortly and the airwaves will return to where they were before, which was dominated by Frank Sinatra, Bing Cosby and Patty Page. “But it was very exciting. “We didn’t know what was going to happen, we did give up our day jobs and flung ourselves into it not knowing where we were going. “And I think that was one of the reasons The Deltones is still around today. “We never thought we had a future in it, and we just went from day to day. “We never really planned our career.” The group had taken plenty of tips from rock legend Johnny O’Keefe in those early years and even appeared on his show, Six O’Clock Rock. “The Delltones performed with him on stage on that show and also on many of his iconic recordings, including Shout,” Wilson said. “There was a lot to be learnt from Johnny O’Keefe ... he was not a gifted singer by any means, I think anybody recognises that and I think his records

Box office

don’t necessarily stand the test of time. “But he was a charismatic performer and an exciting performer and it was an exciting time to be around. “When nobody really knew what was going on, he seemed to know what was going on. “And he was able to enchant the punters and fans as well as TV and recording executives alike. “His title as the Godfather of Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll was very apt.” While the group no longer tours as regularly these days, Wilson believes their sound is still spot on. “The type of music we do is lighthearted and it’s aimed at the heart and the feet,” he said. “It’s invigorating, it’s energetic and no matter what mood the band’s in before they hit the stage, we’re invariably up when we leave. “It’s such good fun to do and the audience usually gets infected. “We’re unashamedly crowd-pleasers.” The Delltones play at the Commercial Club tonight (Friday). MOVIE: The Sapphires DURATION: 100 minutes IT’S NICE to see an Australian film with a bit of substance about it. The problem I have with some local films is their reliance on the idea of all Australians living deep in the bush, with a can in one hand and a fair go attitude ever-present. There’s nothing worse than hearing someone say “strewth” on the big screen, as if the film makers couldn’t get past simple caricatures and inaccurate stereotypes. It can be extremely cringe-worthy. Thankfully, The Sapphires largely avoids this.

Filmed at various towns around the Border, the film is set during the Vietnam War and follows the three McCrae sisters as they try their hand at singing. Irish actor Chris O’Dowd plays Dave, their manager, who sees potential in the group and a chance to make it big, and they head off to perform for the troops in Vietnam with their cousin in tow. But first, they need to learn how to perform soul music, a favourite of the American soldiers. The voices of the lead characters really shine through in the film, gelling together in perfect harmony. Jessica Mauboy sounds particularly brilliant and her acting is pretty good for a first timer. It seems odd that O’Dowd would

sign up for an Australian film given his recent stint in Hollywood movies, but he fits in so well. His comedic timing is perfect and he can work humour into any line or situation with what appears to be minimal effort. It’s quite rare to see a film with four Aboriginal lead characters, but they all do a decent job for the most part. It’s hard for the film to pull off some of the bigger scenes without a massive budget, but the production values of The Sapphires is still quite high. It’s an inspiring story that’s executed quite well, and the swinging soundtrack doesn’t hurt either. It’s well worth checking out.

Poor shooting robbing Bandits By TREVOR JACKSON ALBURY Wodonga Bandits face a tough task tomorrow night when they host Brisbane in the last home game of the SEABL home and away season. The Spartans are languishing towards the bottom of the east conference ladder but the Bandits’ shooting woes continue, with just a 37 per cent return in the loss to Mount Gambier last week. Coach Brad Chalmers classed Brisbane as “a good side” who hadn’t lived up to expectations and beating them would be no easy assignment. And while the Bandits’ import players, Mohamed ‘Momo’ Ntumba and Jazzmarr Ferguson, have been stand-outs in the latter part of the season, there’s no escaping the poor shooting. “Over the last three or four games, in particular, we haven’t shot the ball that well,” Chalmers conceded. “But I think it’s just one of those patches guys go through, and we’ve probably had three or four guys going through it at once. “Momo’s been quite consistent with his shooting, but from the perimeter we’ve been a little bit cold.”

Chalmers said tomorrow’s game and the following road trip to Canberra provided a great opportunity for the Bandits to finish on a high - and possibly book a home-court play-off game. “We’re going to have to play really well to get the win and we’ve got the big picture stuff to think about as well, so we’re going to be fairly motivated,” he said. “If we finish the season strongly with two wins, we’ll make the playoffs, and then it’ll depend on other results around the league as to whether we play at home or away.” And Chalmers said there would no major change to his game plan for this weekend. “Over the last month, we’ve been trying to do a few different things defensively and we’ve made some changes there,” he said. “We just haven’t shot the ball well offensively, but it’s not through lack of execution, it’s more that we’re just not putting the ball in the hole. “Our game will be very similar to what we’ve been doing the last couple of weeks and hopefully we’ll shoot the ball a bit better and get the result we’re after.”

Junior golfer to tee off MORE than $600 was raised on Sunday to assist Howlong junior golfer Jayden Walker with costs for his trip to Perth later this month. Walker, who plays off a two handicap, will represent the Victorian State Schools representative side. Walker will join team-mates to play in a series of practice matches and training sessions before competing in the School Sport Australia Championships in Perth between Sunday 26 August and Saturday 1 September. Howlong Country Golf Club arranged a special fund-raiser golf day for Walker. Another Howlong teenager, Zack Murray, will also represent Victoria in the championship.

OPPORTUNITIES… Brad Chalmers says the remaining two SEABL games present a great opportunity for the Bandits to go to the play-offs and possibly secure a home-court final. Picture: TREVOR JACKSON

THANKS SISTER… Lauren Jackson saved the week from being disastrous for her brother, Ross, above.

Flagging fortunes for Ross ROSS Jackson has been in the news this week for all the wrong reasons, after a former assistant was involved in a “fake flyer” campaign against an Albury councillor. But Jackson, who is standing in the coming council elections, did have a much brighter side to his week, as TREVOR JACKSON reports. THE Border displayed a real sense of pride when Lauren Jackson was the Australian flagbearer in the Olympic Games opening ceremony. No doubt many viewers sat up until the early hours to watch the march, but none with more pride than Lauren’s brother, Ross. Ross Jackson said he heard of the announcement around 5.30am on his 30th birthday, which he said was a great start to the day.

But he was relegated to watching the march, as we all did here on the Border, on the TV, rather than being present in London. “It did bring a tear to my eye,” Jackson said. “I’m so proud of that girl. She’s fantastic. She’s a beautiful person and the person who deserves it the most.” Jackson said during Lauren’s career there had always been one constant, his parents Gary and Maree, who made the

trip to London to watch their daughter compete in the Games. He said it was hard to describe the sense of pride they felt watching her carry the flag. “Through my family’s involvement with basketball, ever since Lauren was born … it’s been a very large part of this family’s life,” Jackson said. “From those days through to now, you probably couldn’t describe the pride mum and dad have for this.”

WITH the world ďŹ xated on London and the Olympic Games it is hard to imagine any other sporting events even getting a look in at the moment. The good folks of Albury Wodonga are every bit as mesmerised by the games as anyone else, with local girl Lauren Jackson the face of the Australian team. So it may be a long bow but this weekend the Olympics may just be upstaged by Australia’s premier country football competition, the Ovens and Murray. Okay I hear you, and yes I am a lunatic but take a minute to ask yourself which result is of more signiďŹ cance to you, the Hungarian synchronised swimming routine or the ďŹ nal scores in another chapter of the Albury and Yarrawonga saga. You agree don’t you? And if you add the sneak preview of this year’s elimination ďŹ nal into the mix, Wodonga Raiders and Lavington, I am sure you to0 can now picture Juan Antonio Sommeranch declaring this weekend’s Ovens and Murray round as the “best round everâ€?! And so, as they say, let the games begin. Albury v Yarrawonga Last weekend’s shock loss to Lavington means it is quite likely that the Tigers will not ďŹ nish the home and away season on top of the ladder. It does however mean that it is more important than ever to keep the psychological strangle hold it has on long time combatant Yarrawonga. The Tigers have denied the Pigeons premiership success for the last three consecutive years and with that comes a decisive mental edge. The game will be enthralling with two brilliant midďŹ elds that between them have three Morris Medals, and possibly a fourth at the completion of this year. Albury may struggle in the ruck department with an injury to Josh Dicketts, but without doubt the key will be goal scorers. Brendan Fevola has 77 goals this season and his impact on a game is unquestionable. He was well held last week and Albury’s Jay Koehler will be hoping to dish up more of the same this week. Albury are not as reliant on any one individual in front of goal but will be hoping All Australian country rep Josh Maher is available to return to the fray to stretch the Pigeons’ defence.

Myrtleford Wodonga Wangaratta Rovers Lavington Yarrawonga Helen Goldsworthy

Throw in Tadhg Kennelly, a very vocal Albury and Yarrawonga supporters group and the incredible Albury Sports Ground facilities and you have one hell of a game. Albury rarely loose two in a row and Yarrawonga are perhaps due to drop a game. While not a very compelling reason, but with that in mind I’m selecting Albury by 15 points. Wodonga Raiders v Lavington These two teams will deďŹ nitely meet in the elimination ďŹ nal so a victory in this game will be a mental advantage. I believe the Wodonga Raiders are the form team of the competition. Ben Davies is in incredible touch, he is impossible to tag and links up so well with his Raider team mates. The Panthers will need to work hard at the stoppages to restrict the ball he receives. Last week Matt Pendergast and co did this brilliantly againstAlbury. The Raiders also posses a livewire in Patrick Rose who is homing in on 100 season goals. In the past they have been a bit one dimensional but have since discovered a bigger spread of scoring options. Joel Hartley will need to again step up for the Panthers in the forward line after a great six goal cameo last week. I think the Raiders’ top-liners are close to the best in the competition and are performing at consistently good levels. While it’s hard to decisively select a winner, I think the Raiders at home should have the edge. Raiders by 19 points.

Local Sport Steamers stop

Banking on the best By PETER SWEENEY THE Albury Tigers are banking on the best footballer in the Ovens and Murray League hitting town tomorrow - for two reasons. “We want to play against the best - and there’s no doubt, it would be good for our bank, Gavan Schultz, president of the Albury Tigers, said. And there’s no prizes for guessing who Schultz is talking about. Word from further down the Murray River suggests Brendan Fevola will run out for Yarrawonga in its away clash with the Tigers. Fevola usually only plays home matches for the ladderleading Pigeons. Albury are budgeting for a “bigger than normal crowd tomorrow. “We’re hoping to get 2000-2500 people, but there’s three other games (Wodonga, North Al-

bury and Lavington) in town, so there’s plenty of choices for footy fans, Schultz said. “We have contingency plans in place for the crowd. If it is bigger than we planned, and we need more food and grog, then we have that organised. “We’re not getting carried away, but it would be nice if we had to quickly rearrange catering. “We’re watching the weather map, it looks as though it will be a fine day. “Fevola usually only plays at home (Yarrawonga). We’d love him to come, but we’re not paying for him. The Tigers have conquered the Pigeons in premiership play-offs the past three seasons and beat them at Yarrawonga earlier this season. However, the Pigeons presently sit a game and a half clear of the second-placed Tigers.

TURNING POINT‌ The Tigers hope Brendan Fevola will be in Albury tomorrow - helping them kick goals off the field.

THE Steamers have run out of steam - at least temporarily. The all-conquering Steamers - the big boys of Southern Inland Rugby Union - last Saturday lost their first match of the season, dropping 14-38 to Wagga Ag College. And it’s back to Wagga again tomorrow for the Steamers, when they take on third-placed Wagga City. Same trip, different result, is the finale Steamers coach Don Cameron is searching for. “We were down on personnel, but that’s no excuse. They were too determined and physical for us, Cameron said of Aggies, who sit one rung below Steamers on the table. “We were suffering the absence of Justin Wheatley and were further weakened by the late withdrawal of House Kora (flu) and Ben Walker (hamstring) for a contest that was always going to be tough. Aggies had only dropped one match pre this game - 18-39 to Steamers in Albury in round five. At home, they were hungry - and a 7-0 scoreline after just two minutes indicated the locals had come to play. When it was 24-7 at half-time, the writing was on the wall. “We did run out of steam and they ran in two late tries, but the scoreline didn’t tell the true story of a fierce, physical clash. Maybe, it was a ‘wake-up’ call the Steamers needed. “We know the standard we must reach to win the 2012 title, Cameron said. “And we know Aggies and City will be hard to beat. They are determined and skilful. “Just as Aggies were hungry for revenge last week, so City will be this weekend. “There’s only two games to go before the finals and we don’t want to start losing now.
