Premier to open centre

POSITIVE FOR WODONGA… Mark Byatt says The Cube represents Wodonga’s transition from rural town to regional city. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON

By BLAIR THOMSON VICTORIAN Premier Ted Baillieu will officially open The Cube tonight. The final touches were being added to the $10 million entertainment centre this week, with Wodonga Council keen to keep details of the opening night a secret until the last minute. But NewsWeekly can reveal Mr Baillieu will be

in attendance at the colourful complex - along with other dignitaries, including Minister Simon Crean representing the Federal Government. But The Cube will not be seen by the public until Saturday. Wodonga mayor Mark Byatt said the new centre, complete with a large outdoor screen, was for everyone in the community to use. “This is an absolute point in time for the history

and the development of this city and something that I think for many, many years we will be proud of,” he said. “Even though there was some apprehension about the design and potentially some of the colours and the naming of the facility, I think what we see in front of us is an outstanding outcome.” Continued page 3

YouTube assault By BLAIR THOMSON ALBURY police are investigating a violent assault posted on YouTube in which a boy had his head stomped and kicked. The video, titled Local Fight 2640, appears to have been filmed near the Albury skate park and shows the boy’s parents encouraging him to attack the other youth. A man who appears to be his father yells at him to “kick his (expletive) head in” while his mother taunts the other youth. His father encourages him to stomp on the other boy’s head, while he covers himself on the ground. The fight stops after the youth is kicked in the head several times. One fighter called the other youth a “Howlong rat” after the fight had finished. More than 800 people have watched the video since it was posted on 25 July, and some spectators in the video clearly show their faces. The video is listed as comedy. One YouTube user commented that “this is why bullies are born … you kids should be ashamed”, while another described the “amazing advice that the loving father is giving his son” as weak. Inspector Tony Moodie said the video was “brutal”. “Police are aware of the YouTube video and have been for a little while and are investigating it,” he said. “It was reported by a member of the public. Editorial Urge ‘kids’ into court IF we are serious about keeping “kids out of courts, then let us put them in there first. Courts should be chocker-block with youngsters ... but on a different side of the fence to where they now are. The more “kids see how a court operates – how soul-destroying it can be – the bigger chance we have of cutting back on crime. No facts are spared in court. Everything is revealed. It can be most humiliating for the accused, very embarrassing to say the least. If schools and those charged with the education and care of youth took them on excursions to courts – seeing what happens, hearing what is said – it would have a big impact. Often magistrates remark like: “You are fined $750 on the charge of stealing, there’s $150 in costs and you have 14 days to pay or you go to jail for a month. Stand down, or “You have a shocking record, you are fined such and such, you must report to such and such police station on Mondays and Fridays. Stand down, can be delivered quicker than Usain Bolt runs 100 metres. Court words may be run-of-the-mill stuff to magistrates, judges, lawyers, police and clerks, but often it’s airy-fairy jargon to others, especially first-time defendants/offenders, who leave court not knowing what’s happened, or what they must do. Something simple like missing when they have to pay a fine by, or not noting how many times a week they must report to a police station, can lead to a warrant being issued. We’re not suggesting to go easy on wrongdoers, not at all. But at least make sure they know what the penalty is and what they responsibilities they have. Society doesn’t want them becoming repeat offenders.

Play time gets closer ASPECT Riverina School is on the way to reaching its goal of a new playground. For 12 months, the private Albury school has been planning an upgrade of an existing area to suit the needs of its autistic children. About $110,000 was needed for the upgrade, a target principal Kristen Ody wasn’t confident of reaching. But it’s getting closer, courtesy of local community groups and businesses. A $600 cheque from the Rotary Club of Albury Hume has taken the total to around $65,000. “We have some lovely community groups who donate small amounts and they all add up,â€? Ms Ody said. “There’s another piece of equipment with the $600 ‌ we’re very excited.â€? The playground area to be refurbished needs to have the old synthetic grass and sandpit removed and new play equipment added. Ms Ody said the new area and equipment would provide vital resources for physical movement and sensory stimulation of students. This includes a rubberised surface, a new sandpit, various pieces of play equipment and outdoor heating. Rotary club secretary Dennis Martin said the money was raised from the sale of programs for the Melbourne Storm-Canberra Raiders rugby

She said often help through other avenues assisted the school in reaching its target. “One of our dads is organising a working bee to come and lift the artificial grass away and dispose of it, which would normally cost $7000, she said. “If we can get some people along and hire a skip, that’s around $7000 we don’t have to find, or we can use to buy equipment. Aspect is an autism-specific school, with the aim of providing children skills and the ability to transition back into a mainstream education system. On average, children spend 18 months to two years at the school. “We do keep some students for all their primary school and some, or all, of secondary, but for children who are ready, the aim is to transition them back, Ms Ody said. “Eighty per cent of autism-affected children don’t have an intellectual disability, but their autism is what gets in the way of being successful in and out of school. “Primarily, we address the characteristics of autism and try and provide the children strategies and ways to live.

A box of many tricks

Rural workers hit LAWYERS are warning recent changes to workers compensation will have a “devastating effect” on people in rural and regional areas. President of the Albury and District Law Society, Kym Connell, said the reforms recently introduced by the NSW Government would cause social and economic upheaval. “These changes will hit the most vulnerable workers the hardest … and are particularly harsh for those in rural and regional parts of the state,” Mr Connell said. “Under the new scheme, compensation for injured workers will no longer be assessed based on the availability of alternative employment in their local area, leading to reduced payments for injured workers in areas with existing job shortages. “For many in regional areas, the only alternative available will be to move to bigger cities, adding to the already existing economic hardship for these individuals and their communities.” President Justin Dowd from the Law Society of NSW said the reforms were an unnecessary attack on benefits for injured people. “Our position is that this legislation should be abolished and we should go back to the drawing board to develop a fair system based on consultation that achieves the aims the government said it wanted to achieve,” Mr Dowd said. “These reforms are bad for injured workers and their families.”

From page 1 Cr Byatt said while The Cube was likely to make money for the council and have positive economic effects for local businesses, it would also be used for free events. “It’s not all about generating income; it’s a community facility by and large,” he said. “It also has the ability to inject some income into the city. “Commercial events on the national or international scale have the ability to inject into our economy quite significant dollars. “They stimulate more business, they stimulate our economic growth and our economic advantage.” Cr Byatt said The Cube was part of Wodonga’s transition from a rural town to a regional city. “If you want people to relocate into your city and enjoy their experience of your city, then these facilities provide that opportunity,” he said. “I think we’ve been lacking in that regard for quite some time.” The Cube replaced the old Civic Centre, which was built in 1971. People will be able to tour the venue on Monday and Tuesday. Cr Byatt said the venue wouldn’t be competing with the Albury Entertainment Centre – but would complement the neighbouring venue. Comedian Wil Anderson will be the first big name to play at the venue with his show Wilarious tomorrow night.

Kicking drama From page 1 “It’s not the sort of video you want to circulate around the place, especially when it’s identifying a victim of an attack. “It’s not great.” Insp Moodie said he didn’t want to say too much about the investigation because it was ongoing, but said investigators were looking at several options, which could include removing the video and laying charges. He confirmed the two people fighting were under 18. “It was quite brutal to look at,” he said. “We’re not very far into the investigation, so I don’t want to say too much.”

THE social issue which has caused the most concern in our community is one of alcohol fuelled violence. The majority of this community, including all members of our team running for election, want early closing. There is no need for licensed premises to be open after 2am, particularly weeknights, winter, or non holiday periods. This is something we all feel very strongly about. We, like you, as parents, business owners, retirees, students and residents, want to feel safe when going out at night. We want tourists to our town to see it as a safe city. There is no need for people to be able to buy and consume alcohol after two in the morning. A one-year experiment in Newcastle recently - where there were enforced lockouts, earlier closing and responsible service of alcohol – saw alcohol related violence reduced by 37 per cent. The council overseen trial period was so successful, they are now looking to replicate the trial in Kings Cross, while other cities in NSW have expressed interest. The council responsible for Kings Cross has recently banned the sale of drinks in glass after midnight. It’s a start … but doesn’t go far enough. Albury should also be following the Kings Park lead. However, the licensed premises in Albury have a lot of power in this city and have resisted all past efforts by council to curb their trading hours. It is therefore disappointing to note that, just as they did at the last election, the hotel lobby is making a concerted effort to get Daryl Betteridge re-elected, as the large and prolific posters being displayed all over town - and the running of election advertising for him on hotel television screens - clearly indicates. Daryl owns Sweethearts Pizza, which has the dubious distinction of being one of the violent alcohol related “hot spots” in Albury. Gavin Grant, owner of the Bended Elbow, which, in the past has also had the dubious distinction of being named in the top 10 most violent establishments in NSW, is second on Daryl’s ticket. Daryl is chair of the Liquor Accord, elected by the members and not appointed by the council, and he has continually failed to see that, as such, he has a clear conflict of interest. As a councillor he should be supporting the views of the majority in this town, not the vested interest minority, including himself. You be the judge. Do you want the hotel lobby, through Daryl, setting the agenda for this city, or do you want people who have the safety of the majority at the forefront of their thinking? Have your say to comments@henkvandeven.com.au or go to the website www.henkvandeven.com.au to have a look at our team and what we promise.

Taxi fire probe By BLAIR THOMSON ALBURY detectives are seeking further information over an arson attack which destroyed a maxi taxi. Several people contacted police after the incident and following a story in NewsWeekly, and police want to speak to them again. “The investigators would like the callers to contact us, have a chat to see what else they can put together,” Detective Marg Saunders said. “There’s nothing to indicate it’s connected at this stage with other car fires. “It wasn’t a stolen vehicle. “There’s other information that has been received that we’d like to follow further.” A middle-aged man was seen carrying what appeared to be a petrol can before the vehicle was

destroyed around 4am on 20 July. The man was described as tall, with a widebrimmed hat, dark jacket, slacks and was aged in his forties. Det Saunders said people contacted police after reading the story in NewsWeekly. “Any other occupants in the street that might not have spoken to us should get in contact,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how small or insignificant the information may seem.” Albury Police can be contacted on 6022 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POOLWERX Albury Wodonga franchise partners Michelle and Rob Hudson and Tracey and Dean Holley have made a big splash nationally. The couples have been commended for their marketing strategies, winning the Local Area Marketing Excellence title at this year’s PoolWerx awards. The award recognised outstanding marketing efforts to open their pool and spa care retail store in October. “We felt it was important to manage our marketing efforts in the area and establish the business and brand reputation so customers knew how serious we are about pool and spa care,” Mr Hudson said. Business partner Dean Holley dived in with: “This award is a true reflection of the strength and experience of the PoolWerx Albury Wodonga team - but also of the continued support shown by our customers and the wider community.” PoolWerx chief executive officer John O’Brien said the Albury Wodonga store was one of the top performing stores in the 220 franchise strong PoolWerx network. Aspirin put to the test A STUDY launched in Albury this week will test whether taking aspirin contributes to good health in elderly people. Researchers at Monash University in Melbourne - and the Berman Centre for Outcomes and Clinical Research in the USA - hope to get 500 local residents to take part in the study. “The ASPREE study will, for the first time, determine whether the potential benefits of aspirin outweigh the risks,” associate professor Robyn Woods said. “Health professionals know aspirin helps prevent heart attacks and some forms of stroke, and research indicates aspirin may also prevent mental decline. “However, aspirin is also known to have side effects, such as increased bleeding, that may offset its benefits.” Residents in Albury-Wodonga who are over 70 and in good health will soon be invited to take part in the study via a letter from their GP. The letter will be sent direct to their homes. Participants, who are randomly assigned to take 100 mg of enteric coated aspirin or a matching placebo (an inactive tablet) daily, undergo annual health checks for an average of five years. Recruitment will end in 2013, with the results of the study made available around 2017-18. For more information on the ASPREE study, visit www.aspree.org or call 1800 728 745.

Abortion hurts many: pro-life group By BLAIR THOMSON CALLS to end weekly protests outside the Englehardt termination clinic are diverting the community’s attention from the real issues behind abortion, according to Peta Evans from the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants. Ms Evans said in a statement to NewsWeekly – following calls by leading local obstetrician Dr Pieter Mourik for the community to rally against the protesters – that her group was being unfairly blamed. “This is an attack diverting the community’s attention from the reality that abortion hurts not only women and babies, but men, families and the greater community,” she said. She said Dr Mourik – a member of the Order of Australia and 2010 Rural Doctor of the Year – and other people opposed to the protests did not “appreciate” several studies. “Neither do they appreciate the medical research that connects abortion to the long-term detrimental effects on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of women,” Ms Evans said. “Dr Mourik refers to the Helpers’ presence and states that the ‘whole community is sick of it’, a generalisation which ignores the many people in our community who do support reducing the number of abortions and giving real alternatives and support to women facing a crisis pregnancy.” Ms Evans said the group acted “peacefully, offering support and education for those who are considering abortion”. She quoted two studies which claimed abortion caused adverse psychological consequences. Dr Mourik was unable to be contacted, but recently told NewsWeekly the information being put forward by the group was “lies”. He said The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists stated claims terminations caused breast cancer and men-

RIGHTS… Peta Evans has again defended the actions of protesters at the front of Albury’s termination clinic. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON tal health issues were wrong. While Dr Mourik is concerned by the number of terminations conducted, he said it was wrong for the group to protest at the clinic and hand out misleading information. “I fervently object to a minority group terrorising women every week without fail,” he said. “I’ve sat in the car and watched them. “They do not let any person come in or out without confronting them with a pamphlet and this revolting little plastic foetus.

“They actually intimidate every woman coming in and out.” Dr Mourik said the protesters didn’t know if women were attending the clinic with things like gross fetal abnormalities, and said only very early term terminations were conducted. “Every person who comes in and out gets assaulted or intimidated,” he said. “That’s got to stop. “They can have the strongest beliefs they like, but that’s not the way they should behave.”

Meet the candidates ALBURY councillors - and “wannabe” councillors -will be put under the pump at a public meeting next week. The public will ask candidates for the 8 September elections what their views are on all issues at a community forum on Thursday. The “tell us all” get together has been organised by Albury Wodonga Community Network Incorporated - at the request of some active ratepayers. Invitations have been sent to the number one candidate listed on the ticket of the 12 groups - and the three independents - standing in the elections for the Albury Council. The 12 groups each have five people on their ticket. “If the candidate listed at the top of the ticket cannot make the meeting, then the invitation is for another candidate on that ticket,” Lucinda Rhook, the chief executive officer of AWCNI, said. “We are focusing on the GlenroyLavington area, as that’s where the people who asked us to arrange the meeting are from. “They want the candidates to say what their visions are, the issues they think are important and what they will pursue if elected. “There has been a positive response from people. One candidate has responded saying he is glad to have an avenue like this to connect with the community.” The community forum will be held at the Glenecho Neighbourhood House, 949 Burrows Road, Glenroy, between 6 and 8pm. Fines linger over stink By TREVOR JACKSON GREENCHIP Recycling could face a fine of about $300,000 - and further penalties of up to $150,000 a day – if Environmental Protection Authority regulations are not followed at its compost plant. Concerned residents in the Killara region this week voiced their opinions to the EPA at Baranduda, frustrated at the apparent lack of action regarding foul odours coming from the premises. They were told of measures presently in place to alleviate the issues. But it’s also the contamination of ground water that is a concern for the EPA, with leachates, or run-off, from the composting process potentially creating a “very serious issue.

The EPA’s north east regional manager, Clare Kiely, said they were very concerned about the situation and had issued two recent Pollution Abatement Notices, PANs, covering both the odour and the groundwater situation. She said an initial notice issued previously had failed to alleviate the odour, so the EPA was left with no option but to take further action, which included fining the company for noncompliance. “We were getting a lot more community reports recently, so this time the EPA decided we needed to approach things differently, Ms Kiely said. “We formed a partnership with Wodonga council saying ‘we really need to work together on this’. That re-

sulted in us doing an extensive number of inspections and odour surveillance, some of it jointly with Wodonga council. That resulted in two notices being issued last month and also a penalty infringement notice that was issued last

week for a breach of licence for offensive odour. The $6500 fine is the tip of the iceberg, with further fines applying, should the PANs not be complied with. Ms Kiely said it was a challenge to prevent odours from such industries and the EPA was endeavouring to discover exactly what was being used in the composting process. “We do believe the inputs are contributing to the odour, she said. “Odour is attributed to the leachate that runs off and the waste inputs that arrive on site. “Based on information we get, we may look at reviewing the inputs currently taken and that will assist in reducing odour. Ms Kiely said the work required to

Swooper season

SWOOPING… A magpie takes flight. SPRING must be coming. Why? Well, magpies have started swooping. So much so, that a “stay away from this place” order has already been issued by Wodonga council for David Winterbottom Park, north of Pearce St and east of Stanger St. Council is advising residents to steer clear of the park – a well-known magpie hotspot - for two months. More “stay away from here” warnings are tipped as the weather warms and the maggies arrive. “The best way to deal with a swooping bird is to keep as far away as possible, until the young birds have left the nest,” Richard Lamb, from council’s parks and gardens, said. People swooped by magpies are asked to report it to the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), who are compiling records for the Victorian Magpie Map. The map will advise people of areas to steer clear from. And the DSE is giving away ‘swoop off’ kits, which include a set of printable eyes to put on the back of helmets and hats. People are urged to wear a bike helmet or hat when walking in areas known to attract magpies. Residents can report a swooping location by phoning 136 186, or by tweeting @DSE_Vic with the location details and #swoopvic.

THE BORDER… Steve Toms hopes to start fixing problems caused by state lines.

States of repair By BLAIR THOMSON THE New South Wales cross-border commissioner is hoping to start fixing some of the bureaucratic issues between Albury and Wodonga. Steve Toms, appointed to the position in March, said the NSW Government was expected to respond to his report detailing crossborder anomalies this week. Mr Toms compiled a list of concerns, not just for the local area but throughout NSW, in categories including health, transport and liquor licensing between the states. He said “some things” had already been fixed

in the local area, but added his hands were tied on commenting before the report is released. “It pretty much details all of the cross-border issues, and they certainly show up in AlburyWodonga,” he said. “That will become very clear once I can speak more freely about it. “There are some cases of businesses, or individuals, that can be resolved pretty quickly.” Member for Albury Greg Aplin said he would discuss the report with Mr Toms in the next few weeks. “I’m not sure specifically of the issues he has identified, but that’s the purpose of the next

meeting,” he said. “There was a very large number (of issues). “So it’s a case of working through those anomalies that can be resolved and identifying ones that are just there because of state peculiarities which can never be resolved.” Border residents had spoken of the difficulty of running a business across two states, of concerns between differing car licence laws, and other issues. Mr Toms said there was likely to be more information released about this issue later this week, after NewsWeekly went to print.

SAY NO TO DRUGS Published: Friday, September 7, 2012

September 2012

DRUGS are the scourge of society. They kill people. They ruin the lives of others. There’s no such thing as ‘casual’ use, drugs will trap you. So, do we, as caring, concerned and committed citizens sit back and do nothing? Or do we take up the challenge… for our children, for our community, for ourselves? News-Weekly wants to do what it can to make society cleaner, and life better, for Border people. We cannot do it on our own – and invite you to join us in the fight. Together, we CAN do it. would contribute an additional $200,000 – effectively offering up to $3 for every $1 raised. “The local community and its community foundation met the challenge.” Mr Drum said Border Trust’s greatest strength was building strategic funding partnerships and strong mutually-beneficial relationships with local businesses and community organisations. Mr Drum congratulated fund-raising partners, including the Hume Building Society, NAB, Australian Industry Group, the Albury Wodonga Bridal Fair, Parklands Albury Wodonga, Places Victoria, Apex Wodonga, the Murray Valley Centre and the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company. Border Trust is one of 10 community foundations that raised money from local corporate, philanthropic, individual and government sources to support community initiatives.

A COMMUNITY foundation providing support for the Wodonga, Alpine, Indigo and Towong communities has been rewarded for its fund-raising efforts - with a $200,000 boost from the Victorian Coalition Government. The bonus is on top of a $100,000 government funding announcement last year. Damian Drum, the parliamentary secretary for regional development, made the announcement at the Albury Wodonga Community College on Wednesday. Mr Drum was representing Peter Ryan, the deputy premier and minister for regional and rural development. “Border Trust supports local programs that they believe will provide the greatest benefit across the Alpine, Indigo, Towong and Wodonga communities,” Mr Drum said. “When we gave them the seed funding of $100,000 in June last year, we also set a challenge. We said if they could raise $100,000 within 12 months, the Victorian Government

nations and the sales of merchandise. It’s little wonder that Daffodil Day – now in its 26th year – is Australia’s flagship fundraiser and the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. This year’s target is more than $9.2 million, which will be directed towards vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services for cancer patients and families. Just $5 can support a newly diagnosed patient while $500 can help fund groundbreaking research into better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. Cancer councils contribute more than $50 million yearly for research into improved treatments. More than 10,000 volunteers are today expected to staff over 1200 Daffodil Day sites across Australia. The range of merchandise includes enamel lapel pins, branded pens, mini-footballs, diamante pins, a Gardener Dougal teddy, key rings, and, the main attraction – bunches of fresh daffodils. Cancer’s most alarming statistic is that

PREPARED… Wodonga Primary School students will perform to about 12,000 people in Melbourne next month. Picture: BLAIR THOMSON

Primary aim is to perform By BLAIR THOMSON STUDENTS at Wodonga Primary School are busy preparing for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular. The young singers will perform in front of an expected audience of 12,000 at Hisense Arena in Melbourne on 8 September. Associate music director Trevor Jones recently came from Melbourne to visit the students, and said they were ready to go. “They’ve been working hard over the last six months,” he said. “They’re really well prepared and it’s exciting to see them so excited ahead of the show.”

Mr Jones assisted the students in their vocal work. They will sing simultaneously with 1500 students from around Victoria in two, three-hour shows. “They’re going to be up in one of the sections usually used by audiences to fit them all in,” Mr Jones said. “It’s a mass choir, singing a range of music from the Beatles through to recent pop hits. “It’s really great fun.” The show will also feature an 80-piece orchestra, 1400 mass dancers and 30 circus performers. Visit education.vic.gov.au/spectacular for more information.

From hiccups to hip hop for Hoods By BLAIR THOMSON IT has been a long journey from drunken freestyling in parks to the top of the hip hop world for the Hilltop Hoods. The three members of the hugely popular Adelaide hills outfit started rhyming around the age of 15, simply to entertain themselves. Australian hip hop was like a bad joke when they started, and few artists were good enough to achieve any airplay. “Some of us studied and worked jobs and all that sort of thing, but we never planned to make a career from it, simply because there was nobody in this country who was making a living off it,” MC Pressure, real name Daniel Smith, told NewsWeekly. “There really was not much to do in the Adelaide hills, so we used to just get drunk and freestyle in parks, and that turned into making crusty demo tapes in a shitty eight track self-made studio. “Our early recordings are pretty embarrassing. “We were rapping about anything from bludging school to stealing liquor from the local bottle-o, or painting trains ... really juvenile sort of stuff.” But those early songs are now just a distant memory, and a quick listen to the radio or look at the charts shows how much the musical landscape

has changed. “It’s entrenched itself in the younger generation,” Pressure said of Aussie hip hop. “They’ve taken it as their own and taken it in their own direction and they’re doing different things with it, which is amazing. “Traditionally hip hop has been a sort of youth culture and I think the reason for that is it’s so accessible “It exists on a very street level and a very primal level, everyone can have a go at it.” While everyone may be able to write a few rhymes and sing a few verses, few do it as good as the Hilltops. Songs like The Hard Road, The Light You Burned, Still Standing and Parade of the Dead are testament to that, as is the fact their last three albums have reached number one on the charts. “I think the music has probably changed, for sure, that’s a natural progression thing,” Pressure said. “You get older and you develop more as an artist and start moving your music in different directions. “Your music in hip hop is very much a personal reflection on who exactly you are; as you change over the years, your music moves with you.” According to Pressure, delivering lines like “to have to tell my son he near-

ly never existed” isn’t always easy. “That was very personal to me,” he said. “I guess hip hop more than other music is much more expressive because of the volume of information you’re giving. “It’s so much more than you can jam into a rock track. “When I’m rapping about my family or my son, certainly that’s personal to me, it doesn’t get any more personal than that.” As a long-time fan of Eminem, Pressure was elated to land a support slot opening for the US rapper’s Australian tour late last year. “They were just small shows to 50,000 people in a stadium,” he joked. “Nobody in the entire place got to meet him, not even the promoter. “He literally rocked up in a black van and a SWAT team of security led him on stage, he did the show and got led off stage. “But it was good fun, they were crazy shows.” While the Hilltops aren’t as big as Eminem, Pressure said the band’s popularity overseas was increasing and said the group had no intention of slowing down. They will play a sold-out show at Paddy’s on Sunday.

MOVIE: The Bourne Legacy (MA15+) DURATION: 135 minutes DESPITE getting off to a somewhat boring, sluggish start, the latest instalment in the Bourne film franchise eventually makes its mark. Gone is Matt Damon, replaced with Jeremy Renner, who stars as Aaron Cross. Cross is an elite member of the secretive Operation Outcome squad, and the film opens with an Alaskan training mission to test the capabilities of the hardened soldier. Squad members – known by their assigned numbers – are testing two pills that enhance the physical and mental capabilities of those who take them. While all this is happening, Bourne – never seen, apart from a small photo – exposes information that brings several top secret government operations into question. This causes the cancellation of Cross’s program and the elimination of all assets, which in real terms means the destruction of the operatives. One of the best things about the Bourne movies, including this one, is the questions it raises about government power and secrecy. Those who serve the best interests of the country are essentially disposable pawns for their bosses. Their deaths may make a small, vague sentence read aloud to a senate enquiry, and their lives are only as useful as the bigwigs decide. There’s no good guys fighting the bad guys ... it’s the supposed good guys, employed to protect the nation, fighting the individuals they employ to protect the nation. The case of Julian Assange and Wikileaks, which is back in the news, shows this secrecy and underhanded tactics do happen, but with perhaps a little less blood and gunfire. The inevitable firefights and car chase scenes in the film are well-crafted, with a good mix of thought provoking dialogue and action-packed battles. It’s about on par with the earlier instalments, and leaves you thinking there’s definitely more Bourne movies to come.

AFTER a stint co-ordinating the Audio and Visual Specialist Association – but not wishing to live in “the big smoke – I opted to semi-retire. I helped set up Tru Hi-Fi as a small footprint business with low overheads to cater for the customers who enjoy their music and videos – and appreciate the better standards of television viewing. Like most concerts I attend these days, I expected the majority of people who entered the store to have grey, or no, hair. This occurred, however, another phenomenon also happened. Through the website and networking activity, the 25 to 35-year-olds appeared and purchased in a way that was most unexpected. I must admit that in my children’s generation, it was all about being seen with the latest label, or the coolest brand, or the clothes had to have the right advertising. Something has changed in a short period. A generational change is unfolding – and this must have the retail market in a spin. From what I am experiencing, today’s emerging leaders are more conscious of what they get for their available income. The online spin, paid advertorials, the flashy expensive shopfronts of public relations companies, don’t help sell the products if the blogs or chat sites universally expose the shortcomings. Today it is becoming more difficult for a retail store to place a range of similar products from the same factory with different brand names with different prices and call it “choice. Our emerging customer will use the internet more and more – not necessarily because they want to. Most are still happy to buy locally for the security of service and advice. If the retail market ends up with a lack of advice, lack of choice and expensive looking spiderweb shopfronts, the emerging generation has news for them.

Top ownership beside the sea THE Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) divides housing tenure into three broad categories: those owned outright; those owned with a mortgage; and the rest, which are rented. The most recent Census - compiled in 2011 - found two suburbs in metropolitan Melbourne where more than 60 per cent of homes were owned outright. By way of comparison, the Census found 33 per cent of homes were rented last year, the balance being owned outright or with a mortgage. Both the top locations with very high levels of outright ownership were in seaside locations on the Mornington Peninsula: Portsea and Sorrento. The raw data may, however, not reflect the actual ownership scenario, as the Census is based on the physical location of the people when

they filled in the Census forms in August 2011. Portsea and Sorrento are towns more popular in summer than winter. During summer, people travel to their holiday homes and short-term rentals are highly occupied. This is reflected in the Census by the fact Portsea and Sorrento had vacancy rates of more than 80 per cent on Census night; it was highest in Portsea, where 88 per cent of homes were vacant. The age demographic of those who were home also reflects this. In Portsea and Sorrento, 81 per cent of those at home on Census night were aged 55 or over. This tells you a lot about these towns and highlights the importance of looking at demographic data from a number of perspectives, when using it to guide investment decisions.

Biggest with 2400 houses By BLAIR THOMSON CONSTRUCTION has started on the biggest display home village on the Border, with the laying of a concrete block at Riverside Estate in Wodonga. The home to be built will be one of 17 display homes in the development, which will eventually contain 2400 houses. “This is easily the largest display village in the region, JMP Developments project manager Andrew Stern said. “There’s about eight homes already under construction and by the end of the year we should have a minimum of 30 houses here. “There’s a real variety in the blocks, but they’re typically

anything from about 700m2 up to about 1200m. “We’ve got smaller blocks, but typically the sweet spot tends to be around 700-800m2. Davis Sanders Homes is building the first display home and 10 other local and national builders will construct the remainder. “They’ll all be open by 2013, Mr Stern said. “It will be a real magnet for people looking to buy a new house and land package and there’s huge traffic flows during the week and weekends here. Wodonga Real Estate is selling the blocks. The company’s land specialist, Margy Meehan, said there

had been good levels of inquiry. “We’ve just released stage three, we’ve put them on the internet and are marketing them and starting to sell them, she said. “It’s good to have the variety and I think it’s going to be a wonderful estate for families. “There’s walking paths, the river for swimming or fishing and it’s going to be wonderful going in to the future. NBN fibre optic cable, which all new home owners will have instant access to, has been installed at the estate. Davis Sanders Homes managing director Murray Pigdon said he expected the development to stimulate growth and activity in the building industry.

An excellent opportunity HUTTON Real Estate has for sale a delightful three-bedroom unit, one of just two on the block. Whether you are looking to live-in, or wanting to add to your investment portfolio, this unit is one not to be missed. The unit offers large open living, incorporating dining, kitchen with pantry and a breakfast bar.

The three bedrooms include built-in robes and the unit has been freshly painted with new carpet throughout. The single lock-up garage provides internal access and a private yard adds to the liveability. Situated close to public transport, schools and within easy access of Lavington Square shopping centre, this unit offers convenience and an excellent opportunity.

WHEELY GOOD FUN… the Border BMX Club holds its annual state challenge next weekend.

States to go headto-head By TREVOR JACKSON THERE will be action aplenty when the Border BMX club hosts its second NSW-Victoria state event next weekend. The open competition was first staged last year, with NSW claiming the overall title while Victoria took the honours in the teams challenge. Club president Chris Walsh said the event was well received and he’s looking forward to further success this year. “We had about 250 riders last year, with around 40 pro riders,” he said. “There’s plenty of interest and I think the Olympics has stirred it up as well.” Competitors range from the very young to the very experienced - with trophies on offer for all classes and prizemoney for pro riders. NSW will be joined by the ACT to tackle the Victorians. And there’ll be plenty of interest from the local community, with several riders taking to the track to represent the region. “We’ve got a few young blokes

riding the 15-year age group and we’ve got a few new members between six and eight years of age, who will be having a go at their first major meeting,” Walsh said. “It’s a good opportunity for them to have a race in a major meeting without travelling away.” Riders will also have the opportunity to experience state tutoring, with coaches from Melbourne attending on Saturday. Walsh said the feedback from last year’s event was very positive, with many enjoying the social atmosphere as well as the tight racing. And he said the rain in recent weeks hadn’t dampened spirits, with work continuing on the track to ensure it’s presented in pristine condition. “We’ve done a fair bit of maintenance on the track and have a bit more to come,” he said. “As long as we don’t get a heavy downpour it’ll be fine … a bit of mist actually does it more good than harm.” Action takes place on Sunday between 10am and 1pm at the BMX track on Silva Drive, Wodonga.

Says with SIMON CORR “AND now, the end is here, and so I face the final curtain.” “Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew, when I bit off more than I could chew. I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way.” Okay, Frank Sinatra was probably referring to his career in entertainment, but there’s a similarity with his famous song and the finale this weekend for four coaches in the Ovens and Murray. For Myrtleford’s Stan Magro, North Albury’s Bob Craig, Wangaratta’s Judd Porter and Corowa Rutherglen’s Shaun Mooney, the Sinatra lyrics ring true. The end is undeniably here. Some will be content on the progress they have made, but overwhelmingly all will be disappointed with the way this season panned out. As Blue Eyes said, there was certainly times when they bit off more than they could chew and they all absolutely stood tall, but did they really do it their way? I am not suggesting any of these guys didn’t have full control over their respective teams, I am rather pondering if they did it their way, or did they do is as best they could? Surely, if some of these teams had the resources of some of their fellow competitors, the end results would have been vastly different. Imagine if Craig had the finances to recruit a high-profile AFL recruit, or if Magro had a list of 60 to 70 he needed to trim at the beginning of the year. I guess what I am trying to say is that sometimes a coach is only as good as his cattle - and the resources which support them. The four guys did the best they could and all should be extremely proud of their efforts. The life of a coach is a tough one, with plenty of criticism and little praise. Well done and good luck to these four mentors

and let’s hope that should you engage in this type of leadership again, you get to really say “I did it my way.” The curtain will also fall on the playing season for five clubs this weekend, as we enter the final home and away round. It’s a difficult time as the months of pre-season and the blood, sweat and tears invested in the year are not rewarded with a finals appearance. Unfortunately, 10 doesn’t fit into five and by Saturday afternoon, it will be time to start looking to next year. Some individuals will be rewarded with club best and fairests and pats on the backs, but as a team sport, you want to share the ultimate success. The Race to the Ton The biggest thing of interest this weekend will be who will reach the big ton. Brendan Fevola sits on 94 goals and will try to kick six against bottom placed North Albury. Fev is yet to play the Hoppers and even despite the efforts of their champion captain, Dan Leslie, it is hard to not see him achieving the feat. Things won’t be as easy at McNamara Reserve for Patrick Rose and the Wodonga Raiders as their opponent, Myrtleford, have the propensity to drop numbers. Rose has been superb this season and requires just five goals for the century and I hope he also reaches the mark. With big crowds expected at both venues, it will be an exciting thing for the games. Fev will have the added appeal of achieving his century at home, however, I’m sure the Raiders faithful will head up to the Ovens to ensure Patty has plenty of support. The games this weekend are really a “bit of a nothing” with finals-bound team hoping to get through unscathed. The biggest anomaly is that Albury and the Wangaratta Rovers meet – and will play again in the first game of the finals. Will the coaches play ducks and drakes with their selected teams? Is a win more important than a loss which sees the side maintain a healthy list? I wouldn’t read too much into the result of this game … but expect both to have a fair dinkum crack.

Local Sport Looking to ‘nail’ series By TREVOR JACKSON KRIS Meyland has taken RAMBO by the scruff of the neck - and hopes to deal out more of the same at Nail Can Hill on 9 September. Meyland won the first four rounds of the Riverina Alpine Mountain Bike Open - a series of three-hour enduros - at Bright, Mount Beauty, Wagga Wagga and Beechworth. Now he’s eyeing victory in the final leg at Albury. “That’s the goal, but a lot can go wrong,” he said. “It would be good to do it in front of the home crowd … it would be a dream to be honest.” But little has gone wrong for Meyland this season. In fact, he has finished a lap up on the next finishers in two rounds - and nearly 10 minutes clear of the second-placed riders in the other two. Meyland said he was pleased with the results, especially considering this is his first season back racing for many years. “I was racing mountain bikes in high school and was pretty competitive,” he said. “I had a break for a while then got back into road riding last year. That was going well so I got back into mountain bikes, and I guess it snowballed from there. “Steve from The Full Cycle gave me a bike to ride and it all fell

into place.” And it’s the endurance road riding which Meyland says has helped him in the longer dirt format. “A lot of the other mountain bike racing is quite short and sharp and I don’t really respond too well to that,” he said. Meyland said having a good support crew was also an integral part of his success. “My parents still come and watch me and my girlfriend hands me my drinks,” he said. “I don’t carry much with me on the bike. That’s the advantage of doing the multiple laps - I know that every 25 minutes I’ll be back to get something I want. “Over three hours there is a bit of a strategy to make sure you have enough energy left by the end of it, or you can find yourself wanting.” Meyland recently won a six-hour event in the team category at Nail Can Hill. “It’s probably good in that it’s got a bit of everything, but nothing for too long,” he said. “Mount Beauty has quite extensive climbs, whereas with Nail Can, you’re up and down quite a lot so it works well. The six-hour was one of the most enjoyable races I’ve ridden.” See more about the RAMBO event at Nail Can Hill on www.alburywodongamtb.org.au

Home, but not hosed BORDER basketball fans are gearing up for their most exciting week in a decade – with the Bandits hosting the SEABL grand final against either Knox or Nunawading tomorrow week. However, for coach Brad Chalmers and his players, reality has set in and it’s back to business for the showdown at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. Chalmers has no special training plan for the big game. “We’ll stay fairly normal with our preparation,” he said. “We won’t do anything too different. We will have an extra session on the weekend to ensure the run’s in our legs. Then we’ll be planning a little bit around who the opponent is.” Chalmers said either Knox or Nunawading would be confident of travelling up the Hume (Highway) and taking the title back south. “Both those teams are pretty experienced in playoff basketball,” Chalmers said. “Whoever comes here will come with a fair bit of confidence. But we’re in the same vein, we’re feeling confident that we’re

prepared and will be able to play well in our home environment.” Chalmers said their performances over the last few rounds of the home and away season had shown they had what it took to win the title – intensity at both ends of the floor. Add to that an improved shooting percentage in recent games and the home side is looking the goods. “It’ll be important the team that wants to win shoots the ball at a reasonable clip, and down the other end can really make stuff happen and create offence from their defence,” he said. “We’ll focus on that and I think we did a pretty good job of that down in Knox (last weekend). “Everyone’s super-excited and the boys understand the opportunity they’ve got and the importance of it,” he said. “We’re playing in the best basketball competition currently running in Australia and we have a chance to play in one of the conference grand finals. I think we all understand it’s a big deal for us and for the community… it’s just real exciting.”

Cash and crowd up Wild over Casey STAKEMONEY’S up - and the 131-year-old Albury Racing Club is tipping crowd numbers will follow suit. The curtain opens at the Albury racecourse today when the first of 18 meetings for the 2012’13 season is held. More than 200 people will be entertained over lunch by Melbourne comedian Ben Price, but connections of horses have their eyes more firmly fixed on stakes, the minimum money for a race this year being $15,000 - up from $10,000 last year. Horses will race for about $1.5 million at Albury this season. As for club officials, their eyes are fixed on the spring carnival. The club will race on October 13 and 27 (Caulfield Guineas and

Cox Plate days) and November 6 and 8, Melbourne Cup and Oaks days. “We want to make those days bigger and better than they’ve been,” ARC chief executive officer John Miller said. “The Albury Gold Cup carnival on 21 and 22 March, 2013, is the showpiece, but many efforts are being put into making our spring meetings more successful, especially with non-racing people. “There will be an Oktoberfest promotion at our meeting on the 13th. “This will be the third year we have had a meeting on Melbourne Cup day. Last year we had nearly 3000 people here.”
