Little place, big day W WALLA WALLA will hit the national headlines on Monday, when star sportsman and champion b bloke Merv Neagle is farewelled. More than 1000 people are expected at the funeral of N Neagle, who was tragically killed when his truck crashed near Griffith on 23 August. See page 3.

Purple Power THEY call themselves the ‘Purple Power Surge Girls’ and tomorrow week 165 of them - all sporting purple outfits and red hats – will kick up their heels in Albury. The PPSG are part of the Red Hat Society, a worldwide ‘disorganisation’ of women who embrace their mature years with enthusiasm. “A day of fun, friendship and complete silliness is something we don’t often do,” organiser Pam Bleasdale said. Animal cruelty rife By BLAIR THOMSON RSPCA workers are responding to two cases of animal neglect and cruelty on the Border every day. Inspectors covering the AlburyWodonga region say the number of incidents they respond to is “unacceptable.” “I go to probably 350 to 400 jobs a year, just in my region,” Albury inspector Lionel Smith said. “Since I joined the RSPCA, there’s been probably nine or 10 years of drought, so the workload has been absolutely enormous.”

Mr Smith said he attended about 30 jobs on average each month and sometimes as many as 50 jobs. Guy Gorman, in charge of the northeast region which covers Wodonga, attends a similar number. While the drought caused huge problems for livestock, that has now changed. “At the moment, it’s mainly domestic animals, dogs, cats, birds,” Mr Smith said. “It’s annoying with dogs, because there’s six or seven basic things you need to do for the dogs, like provide basic shelter, fresh water, food, veteri-

nary treatment for fleas and exercise. “There’s not a lot of things you need to do. “In the worst cases I do, where there’s malicious damage, cruelty, then you have to have the animals put down and there are some big penalties.” Many cases Mr Smith attends involve repeat offenders. “It’s so frustrating, these people who have owned dogs for years and you have to keep coming back and telling them the same things over and over again,” he said. “At the end of the day, if the care is not provided you have to go ahead and

give them an infringement notice and put them before the court. “But I try and work in with people as much as possible, because I believe if they have to pay a $500 infringement notice, that’s money they could be using to provide for the animal.” Mr Gorman said while some of the Wodonga matters he responded to were relatively minor, some involved serious cases of cruelty. “It’s not acceptable,” he said. “Serious cruelty should be abolished. “We’d like people to heed the point.

“If you’re in a situation of having an animal, you make sure you have the finances to look after the animal. “If not, heed advice straight away rather than waiting for myself to get involved.” Penalties for animal cruelty involve fines up to $30,000 and two years’ jail in Victoria, and $20,000 and up to two years’ jail in NSW. “A lot of people are having a hard time out there, but if you have an animal, you have to have the financial means to care for it,” Mr Smith said.

A RECENT hip replacement hasn’t stopped Maureen Williams from raising - and taking down her favourite flag at her favourite place. Maureen, with a walking stick in hand, is often found early morning and late afternoon beside the flagpole outside Christ Church in Beechworth on flag duty. “I love doing this, Maureen said, as she went to work outside the 150-year-old Anglican church. “This church is a little unusual in that we are open every day. That surprises visitors and maybe it’s taking a risk, but most of the time nothing goes missing. “It’s a sad indictment when churches have to be locked during the day because of vandals and thieves. We don’t want that to happen here. Maybe it’s got to do with a flyer inside the church. “Welcome to a house of prayer. On entering, talk to God, on leaving, talk to your neighbour, it reads. One cannot imagine a light-fingered visitor wanting to talk about what he or she may have left with.

ALBURY RSL had a $1300 “collect on Tuesday - because of a historical society becoming history. The Albury-Wodonga branch of the Military Historical Society of Australia was forced to close because of a lack of numbers. It was founded in 1976. The MHS presented its funds to the RSL. “The RSL were good to us and for more than a decade we held our meetings there in the John Neale room, MHS spokesman Nigel Horne said. “John was a member with us, the RSL and with many other military related organisations.

“POLITICS is perhaps the only profession for which no preparation is thought necessary, famous Scottish novelist-poet Robert Louis Stevenson once wrote. We’re not suggesting those in politics - regardless of who they are or where they are - are bereft of preparation. However, they could be - courtesy of “the punters. Most of the time, most of “the punters couldn’t care less about politics. Sadly, they don’t realise politics is everywhere. Everything’s political. Sporting and school organisations, workplaces, religious organisations and this, that and everything. Don’t believe it? Well, join a committee and find out. Australians often complain about our politicians: mainly over their lack of ability - or their ability to rort the system. With an attitude like that, we cannot complain about what we get. Their superannuation may be the “square-up, but politicans at the top level aren’t flushed. There would be many businessmen in Albury-Wodonga on more money than our federal leaders – and some on more than the Prime Minister. The most meaningful, and important, politics for most people, is, or should be, at local government level. Electors in the city of Albury are tomorrow week off to the polls - and if you don’t go because you “don’t care you will be fined as it’s compulsory to vote. We urge all eligible to vote to take an active interest prior to going to the polls. Don’t know who’s standing in your electorate? Then visit or contact Albury Council and ask. And if the candidate has put a “not for release message next to his or her name, then look up the telephone book and ring them to find out what they plan to do for you and your area. And if you cannot find their number, ring the ACC and leave your name and number for the councillor, or wannabe councillor, to contact you. And if they don’t, don’t vote for them. Electors have got to care, those standing for election must be contactable. A combination of the two leads to good local government.

Merv Neagle, a winner on and off the field MONDAY will be the biggest – but saddest – day in the history of Walla Walla. The untimely death of Merv Neagle has put the town in the national spotlight, and more than 1000 people are expected at his funeral on the local oval, as PETER SWEENEY reports. A SHOCKED and saddened Garry Mickan has “no idea” how many to expect; how many the Walla Walla Football Netball Club has to cater for. “The biggest problem will be with parking. We’re working on 1000 (people). It may be more, it may be less,” Mr Mickan, the club president, said. “We just hope we’ve got enough food.” Buses are coming from Essendon, where Neagle made his footballing name. The premiership cup and flag he helped win the Bombers in 1984 will take pride of place. Many of his past Windy Hill team-mates, and big names from the present, on and off the field, will be there. Cars will transport people from all points, some folk will fly in. Merv Neagle was “a traveller”, a football coach who went here, there and everywhere. Some places he spruiked the coaching gospel at included Merbein, Balranald, North Albury, Mangoplah-Cookardinia United Eastlakes, St Mary’s (Darwin) and Mount Barker (WA). This was his first year at Walla Walla, where his wife, Donna, comes from. “Merv took my girl everywhere with his football,” Elizabeth Heir, wearing a Sydney Swans scarf, said of her son-in-law during last Saturday’s season-closer at Walla. Neagle was playing for the Swans when he met Donna Heir. “Knowing Merv, he will probably be cremated and put in the Murray River, keep moving and travelling. “He used to come into our house and kiss my stroke victim husband (Ken) on the cheek and say, ‘hello my darling’.” Donna Neagle hugged each Walla Walla player last Saturday, after they were beaten by Lock-

hart. Her son, Jydon, was the coach for the day. “You can’t coach, either,” Mrs Neagle joked as she embraced the eldest of her four boys – who is one day tipped to wear the Essendon colours his dad did so famously three decades ago – on the oval which on Monday will hold a crowd it never has. The Walla Walla ground was a sea of red and black armbands last Saturday - and the rooms full of emotion. Mr Mickan, who said he had an “amazing” president-coach relationship with Neagle, “sharing Sunday morning coffee conversations with him at my farm”, had tears and struggled for words as he asked each player what their coach meant to them. All struggled to respond, some couldn’t. Before Saturday’s match, Mr Mickan read a letter from the Hume Football League, saying how lucky it was to have an AFL legend in the competition. And he told a large, stunned crowd the Walla Walla Football Netball Club would start a trust fund or “whatever we have to, to care for Donna and her four young boys.” At the end of the game, he addressed the players. Tears in his eyes, he told the group they had been overcome by the passing of Neagle and couldn’t get up to win, “just like Melbourne with the death of Jim Stynes.” “But hold your heads high, you did him proud. We will have a beer for Merv tonight, he would have liked that.” On Monday, countless numbers will bow their heads in memory of Neagle. Then they will share countless stories of the “loveable larrikin.” And, most likely, have a drink or three for him. Merv Neagle would have liked that.

Born a bushie, died a bushie as Mount Barker, but didn’t want to be in the story. Not so Neagle. “Yeah, no worries mate,” he said. The biggest problem he had at the time was working out how he could get the best country footballer he had seen to play - home for the Aboriginal was a nearby jail. New to this area, a couple of weeks back I went for a Saturday afternoon drive and came across Walla Walla and the footy ground. I asked who coached “the locals” and a bloke wasn’t sure, but handed me the record. I listened to Neagle at three-quarter time, when he urged his players to kick another six goals and make it “our first 20” for the year and then introduced myself to him post-game. We chatted for five minutes, he asking about the west and more interested in anything than himself. That was Neagle. City folk may have seen the sportsman - country folk knew the person. And that is far, far more important.

MERV Neagle walked out of the bush into the big smoke 35 years ago, when he left Dimboola for Melbourne. Though he was to make his name as a star footballer with Essendon, and to a lesser extent the Sydney Swans, Neagle’s heart never left the country. It’s evident by what he did after he finished in the AFL - he headed bush. It could be argued no footballer in the history of the game has given as much to “grassroots” footy as Merv Neagle. The impact he had on bush footballers will long be felt Australia-wide. I met Neagle when I worked for The Sunday Times in Perth and he coached Mount Barker, 350km south of the capital city. I tried to “line-up” a photo story with him and Craig Turley, a former star West Coast Eagle, who, like Neagle, was a runner-up in the Brownlow Medal (1991, to Jim Stynes). Turley was coaching Denmark in the same league

OVER the next week, you will be promised the world by candidates for the Albury City elections. One of the things voters must remember is that for any policies or promises to be carried out five votes are needed. So what I promise is not to make promises I cannot keep. What my team promises is that on any issue, for whatever part of the community, the decisions we make will only be made on merits - and that decision has to provide the best outcome for the city of Albury. Garry, Mick, Alex, Helen and myself have put our hands up to serve the community should you believe us worthy of your vote. I will be sending out the “J” Team how to vote to every resident, and it details a snapshot of each of our team, letting you decide who you want to vote for. If you don’t receive one of our how to votes, contact me at comments@henkvandeven.com.au to request one be sent to you. You be the judge. Do you want to vote for people who make promises they cannot keep, or for the team that wants to serve the community, and who will vote every time for what is best for Albury City? Let me have your thoughts at comments@henkvandeven. com.au Cr Henk van de Ven Written and authorised by Henk van de Ven, 416 Wilson St., Albury NSW 2640. Advertisement

Good, Gooding times A DECADE may have passed, but Paul Gooding remembers it like it was yesterday. And tomorrow night, he’s hoping thousands of fans will experience what he did in 2001. That’s when the Border Bandits last won the South East Australian Basketball League - on their home court - for the first time. Mr Gooding’s son, Leigh, was the head coach. “One thousand pale blue and maroon coloured balloons went up in the air,” Mr Gooding, these days the president of the Bandits and the Albury Basketball Association, said. “There was a lot of razzamatazz, a lot of euphoria over the grand final win. It was our first.” Just a couple of years earlier, the Bandits were headed for oblivion, due

to mismanagement. “The club was in severe financial difficulties, but we got a new adminstration and resurrected things,” Mr Gooding said. And then Leigh Gooding entered the picture. A long-time basketballer in Albury, he was assistant coach of the West Sydney Razorbacks, when a deal was “worked out.” “Leigh became the head coach of the Bandits, came here once a week for training and went to the games,” Paul Gooding said. “Carl Iverson and Matthew Morgan became his assistants and the three blended a team of locals and imports to triumph.” Naturally he, and a big team of basketball lovers, are banking on the same result tomorrow night. See page 28.

ROADS will be bathed in orange this weekend when the Genesys pro cycling team hits town. The team is preparing for the Tour of the Murray and this is their third visit to the Border, using it as the final tune-up. Saturday sees a different format to the previous two years, with a coaching clinic run through Albury Wodonga Cycling club. There will be two separate rides. The team heads off from Stead Street, Wodonga, around 12.30pm for a junior ride, offering advice on technique and bike set-up on the outward leg, with a race for the younger riders on the return journey. A 30-kilometre senior road race starts at 2.30pm. Genesys Wealth Advisors principal Matt Armstrong said the team enjoyed the experience Albury offered, with the many quality roads providing them with the perfect lead-up to the tour, where they are attempting to defend their title. Genesys pro cycling team has been one of the most successful teams in Australia, taking all before them in the Scody Cup last season, in which they won every race they contested. Local cyclists can meet the team, grab autographs and advice. While here, the team is looking to raise money for their chosen charity, Children First. Be at Stead Street at noon tomorrow to join in.

Fake, but fabulous By BLAIR THOMSON PAINTINGS from some of history’s greatest artists have been lovingly ripped-off and copied for a good cause. The Albury Wodonga Artists Society will present Fabulous Fakes at Adamshurst next Friday (7 September), with funds to support the cancer accommodation centre. More than 40 paintings have been copied by the local artists, including iconic works from van Gogh and Monet. “We had a lot of fun doing these,” society president Meg Brown said. “They are spectacular. “They’re a very high standard of painting.” Work on the paintings started a year ago in preparation for the 25th anniversary of the group. While there’s nothing illegal about copying the works, they can’t be signed with the names of the original artists. “And you can’t have a spitting image,” Ms Brown said. “A lot of them are very good, some of them are pretty horrible. “But doing it was a very pleasant thing.” While Ms Brown hasn’t set a fund-raising goal, the event is expected to make a significant contribution to the cancer carers centre. “We’ve had so many people donate things,” Ms Brown said. “Everyone has donated their own materials, they were framed for next to nothing, Adamshurst is donating the building for us to use and Peter Drummond has donated his time for the auction.” Ms Brown is hoping around 200 people will attend the event. Viewing starts at 5pm, followed by an auction at 7pm. Entry is $25, which includes a glass of champagne, finger food and a catalogue. For more information, call Ms Brown on 0418 231 651.

It’s time to Act

THE Local Government Act will be rewritten in a simpler form. The Minister for Local Government, Don Page, said the new Act will ensure local government is brought into the 21st Century and is better able to meet the needs of ratepayers. “The Liberals and Nationals government is about returning grassroots democracy to NSW and bringing local government closer to the people,” he said. “We want to ensure the legislation is more easily understood by the people who rely upon it. “We need an easily understood Act, written in plain English. “The NSW Act is the longest Local Government Act in Australia, containing more than 550 pages. “It was written in 1993 and has since been amended 178 times – it’s time for a new start.”

‘Lucky’ truckie bucks odds By BLAIR THOMSON THE driver of a milk truck involved in a fiery high speed crash has returned to work. Jeremy Ackroyd was injured when his truck slammed into a concrete power pole in Hume Street, Albury, after being struck by an underage driver who was allegedly speeding, in a stolen ute. Speaking publicly about the incident for the first time, he told NewsWeekly he

had had a lucky escape. “The copper told me I was bloody lucky to be in a truck, because if I was in anything else, or on foot, I would have been dead,” he said. “Another cop told me that again a few hours later. “Lucky I’m still here.” Mr Ackroyd sustained head and arm injuries in the incident. But the hardest part was telling his

wife, Kristen, what had happened. “I put it down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said. “A split second later, I would have missed him …or he would have missed me.” Mr Ackroyd has been driving trucks for the past five months and says he didn’t consider finding a new career. “I know none of it was my own fault, so it was a pretty easy situation to get over,” he said.

Recline and win FATHER’S Day. It’s a time to let dad put his feet up and recline – literally. A recent survey of 1012 Australians showed that 42 per cent of dads have a trusted old recliner or sofa they refuse to part with. With this in mind, Fantastic Furniture in Albury has launched a “Recliner Survivors” launch – and is inviting mums, wives, partners, kids and grandkids to send in a photograph of “dad’s daggy” or worn out recliner.

“Tell us why it so badly needs replacing and you could win $1000 to spend in our store,” Noeleen Hunter, Albury store manager, said. “Dad may be seated, but it’s time for you to stand up and be counted.” Send your photo to:www.facebook.com/FantasticAU for your chance to wave goodbye to dad’s tatty old chair and say hello to a brand new look for spring.

Eye, eye… it’s do, or die IT’S move on or mothballs for Lavington and Wodonga Raiders this weekend, when the 2012 finals kick off in the Ovens and Murray Football League. Wangaratta Rovers and Albury clash in tomorrow’s qualifying final, but it’s Sunday’s elimination contest that everybody’s talking about. Todd Bryant (Raiders) and Matt Pendergast (Panthers), pictured left, went head-to-head for photographer TREVOR JACKSON before their teams do the same. Turn to page 28 for how footy writer Simon Corr sees the games.

Grounded, now flying COROWA Shire Council has been awarded a grant of $720,000 to assist with the cost of the clean-up and repairs following storms in March. It is part of a natural disaster declaration by the NSW Government, covering nearly half the local government areas in the state affected by storms and flooding. The Corowa aerodrome area suffered the worst damage. “This is a vital asset to council and the community as it is not only used for medical emergencies, but

as a base by the Rural Fire Service,” Greg Aplin, the member for Albury, said. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth, the NSW Government pays the first $119.7 million of all natural disaster costs in each year. The Commonwealth matches NSW expenditure for costs between $119.7 million and $209.5 million and beyond that pays three-quarters of all costs.

The power to save you energy THE rising cost of electricity is hitting most Australians in the hip pocket but Planet Power have the knowledge to save people real money, now. The Albury-based business has teamed up with the Wagga store to provide true local knowledge across the region and a range of products to reduce power costs. Solar power is a big part of that but there are many other products offered by Planet Power that can help reduce energy consumption and save real dollars on your next bill. “Basically what we’re here to do is offer a total solution, not necessarily just solar,” Planet Power manager Nick Lyons said. “We look at hot water, pool pumps, LED lights, the whole range. The idea is to get the energy costs down and complement that with a solar system. “It might mean that a small solar system with hot water or LED lighting is going to get them a bigger result than just solar.” Sales representative Melissa Lowry said older residents were embracing the new technologies currently available with solar appealing to many. “It’s also something they can monitor,” she said. “Your inverter gives you information on what you’re actually generating. I have found that most customers check their inverter a fair bit. They really want to understand and see what they are pro-

ducing.” Planet Power can visit your home to give a detailed quote and advice on how to save energy and recommend a range of products, including what the current power providers are offering. Mr Lyons said this can equate to real dollar savings. “Depending on where they live and what products they currently use we’ve saved some households up to 95 percent of their bill,” he said. “In some households it’s been up to 60 percent but it all depends on the solution. They may just install LED lights or any of our range of energy-saving products which could bring their bill down by around 40 percent.” Mr Lyons said one of the more popular products had been an energy-saving device for the pool pump which doesn’t replace the power with solar but simply reduces the energy the pump draws. He said most people in the region have found they can cut back the pumps capacity and still achieve the same result for their pool, in turn saving money. If you’re looking to reduce your energy consumption but aren’t sure what steps to take or what products to choose Planet Power has a range of products on display at their Aldi Complex store to show you first hand what each can do. For more information give the team at Planet Power a call on 6021 4500.

BACK… Children Collide are heading to the Border next week.

Welcome collision By BLAIR THOMSON INDIE rockers Children Collide are heading to CSU next Thursday. The three-piece band, fronted by the talented Johnny Mackay, has a unique sound that ranges from reflective melancholy to powerful, aggressive rock. The band’s first EP, We Three Brave and True, was released in 2005 and the group has since been on an upward trajectory. People started to really take notice following the release of Theory of Everything in 2010. Featuring singles Jellylegs, My Eagle and Loveless, the album reached number five on the ARIA

charts after solid radio play on Triple J. While their latest album, Monument, has been slightly less of a hit, the group is still highly popular. The Albury show is one of the group’s last on the 19 date Monument tour, which has mainly focussed on regional cities from Bunbury to Byron Bay. While the show is named after the group’s newest release, the gig will feature tracks from throughout Children Collide’s career. The band members are no stranger to the area, having played here on previous tours. For more information visit childrencollide.com.au

FLIPPING OUT… Local girl “Flip” Kammerer, pictured right, will be back in town for the Circus Oz show at the Albury Entertainment Centre.

Flipped over flying By BLAIR THOMSON HER real name might be Phillipa Kammerer, but the nickname “Flip” suits her perfectly. Flip, a former Border resident and Flying Fruit Flies student, is one of several daring performers taking part in the Circus Oz show at the Albury Entertainment Centre tomorrow week. As her name suggests, she has a talent for pulling off stunning aerial manoeuvres. “I grew up on a farm in the Kiewa Valley near Tangambalanga before I moved to Wodonga,” she told NewsWeekly. “My mum lived in Wodonga and my dad lived in Albury next door to one of the Fruit Fly trainers. “She saw me bouncing on a trampoline one day and told dad to enrol me.” Between the ages of eight and 18, Flip honed her circus skills and toured with the local company. “It was one of the best things that happened to me in my life,” she said. “I did a lot of tumbling, acrobatics, teeterboard, some of the stuff that I’m doing in the Circus Oz show at the moment. “A lot of Fruit Flies come out multiskilled.”

Flip and the other young performers visited Melbourne to view Circus Oz shows each year and she was eventually scouted by the group. “I definitely dreamed of joining,” she said. “I aspired to become a part of it and it’s a dream come true. “I did an audition and got in six months later.” Circus Oz is one of the first contemporary circuses in Australia. While there is a lot of pressure placed on the performers, it’s for their own well-being. “There’s definitely pressure, it just revolves around doing skills that could possibly threaten your life if you stuff them up,” Flip said. “I busted my ankle doing teeterboard when we were overseas one year and had to be taken off to hospital in a kangaroo suit. “It was a bad landing. “The teeterboard is like a seesaw and you get catapulted into the air a couple of metres. “I just had a bad landing and stuffed my ankle ... I tried to keep going but just fell on the floor. “You think, s..t, I hope the person below me catches me well.”

Box office

Safely completing such dangerous stunts requires seven hours of practice every day. While Flip admits it can be tough, she’s done it for so long that it’s second nature. “Consistency is the key for mental and physical confidence,” she said. “Yeah it’s tough, but I’ve been doing it for 20 years now. “When I don’t do it, I get really bored and don’t know what to do with myself.” And while her skill set has improved, she still finds it hard to control her nerves. “As I get older I’m finding it more nerve-wracking,” she said. “If the kids I’m teaching aren’t nervous, I think there’s something wrong with them.” The show runs for around two hours and is suitable for people of all ages. The show has a construction theme, and Flip plays a “fitness freak bogan.” A live band supports the performers, who are all Australian and highlytalented. The local show is part of a tour of regional Australia and will be followed by a run of shows in the USA later this year. For more information call 6043 5610.

MOVIE: Total Recall (M) DURATION: 118 minutes THE new remake of the 1990 film Total Recall is most certainly a movie of two halves. I was a little surprised to find myself enthralled in the movie for the first hour, given the number of bad, and sometimes awful, reviews the film has had. The scene is set right at the beginning; at the end of the 21st Century, the world is uninhabitable, apart from two areas. The UK is now the wealthy United Federation of Britain, and Australia is the working class Colony, with workers from the Colony travelling through the centre of the Earth for work each day. While it borrows (some might say steals) many visual cues from else-

where, with a striking similarity to a level in the last Call of Duty video game, and robots similar to the stormtroopers from Star Wars, the two cities look amazing. There’s a level of depth and detail that is simply stunning, and the storyline hooks you in. Colin Farrell plays factory worker Douglas Quaid, who suffers from nightmares that rattle him when he’s awake. Sick of the monotony of his job and stuck in a rut, he decides to try Rekall. Anyone who’s seen the first Total Recall would know the mind-bending service is not to be toyed with, and despite similar warnings from his friend and a colleague, Quaid gives Rekall a shot. As soon as he’s hooked up and the “secret agent” program tuned in, reality bends. A SWAT team moves in and Quaid

jumps into action, killing all in the room. You’re never quite sure if this is the fantasy he paid for being enacted, or if his real existence is being revealed. While there is that Matrix vibe in the film that makes you question reality, the ideas aren’t strong enough to span the entire movie. They’ve taken ideas good enough to span an hour long movie, stretched them out too far and filled the rest in with action. The second half is gun battles, a little bit of dialogue, more high-octane sequences and things getting blown up - and it’s all very boring. If 30 minutes was cut, nothing would be missed. The most annoying thing is the film starts off brilliantly and full of promise, but ultimately fizzles out and becomes just another action film.

Motoring

Albury Wodonga

A winner, inside and outside THERE’S something about these new Peugeots that just seems to work. The power and driveability of the diesel engines, the comfort and style – it all comes together in one impressive package. And the new 308 Active Touring wagon is no different. Small on the outside, inside it boasts seven seats for family motoring, including three separate seats in the middle row. These three seats offer ample comfort for the younger members of the family, providing their own space, and each one can be removed, which adds to the overall layout of the vehicle. In fact, all seats rear of the front row can be folded up or removed to create extra space for luggage. The middle seat in the middle row can be removed and two side seats moved in to create even more comfort for two passengers - a very modular design indeed. The overall appearance of the little wagon is impressive. Typically modern Peugeot lines set the scene, with a glass panoramic roof topping it off nicely. Inside, optional leather provides a stylish feel and the easy-to-navigate dash places all the necessary readouts within easy visibility. The leather driver’s seat was easy to settle into, with its electric adjustments and vision through the large glass being adequate. Now it’s time to put the 308 through its paces. The two-litre diesel, coupled to a

six-speed automatic transmission performed well through Albury’s Saturday morning traffic. The option of manual shifting helped the little power plant keep spinning and bring its true versatility to the fore. Other than a short throw from first to second gear, the combination worked well, although a typical diesel whirr could be heard off the mark. But once up and running, there was little difference to the average petrolpowered engine. In fact, the two-litre diesel is the same as that utilised in the much larger 508 sedan, which performed impressively. Peugeot claim 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres combined fuel figures for this combination in the 308. Entering the Hume, I was impressed with the acceleration to highway speeds. Again, using the manual shifting option, I was able to keep the urge up and comfortably reach the legal limit with no problems. Once there, a touch of the cruise control set the pace and the little 308 loped along effortlessly. Interior noise was negligible and the 308’s road manners were quite impressive. It offered a combination of smooth comfort with an underlying sporty feel. So far the little Peugeot seemed to be ticking all the boxes – but could it really handle on the rough stuff? Heading out around Lake Hume is enough to give an informed idea of the handling characteristics of any vehicle.

TREVOR Jackson gets behind the wheel of a Peugeot – and finds it comes up trumps. The combination of twisty turns and the bumpy surface demands you keep your eyes on the road, and hands on the wheel. Again, the 308 seemed to excel. It’s no sports car, but then it isn’t meant to be. Having said that, it certainly inspires confidence behind the wheel with ample feel through the

leather steering wheel. A vehicle is the sum of all things – the appearance, the comfort, the handling, the performance and the versatility. The 308 wagon, to me at least, ticks all those boxes, creating the complete package for family motoring. The modular interior design en-

sures everyday needs are met, from ferrying the kids to and from school, to the weekly shopping chores, with ample space and style to ensure a pleasurable experience. The bottom line - if a small, versatile, economic wagon is on your list, then the 308 is definitely worth a look.

Audi sails to medals

EXPORT… Territorys being sent into new territory.

Going forward into new Territory AFTER selling more than 130,000 of the Australian designed and built Territory SUVs, Ford Australia is looking to expand its overseas presence with an export to Thailand last week. Despite the decline in large vehicle sales on home soil, 100 high-

further exports. A small number of Territorys were previously exported to Thailand in 2005, with 2300 also sold to South Africa and more than 12,000 sold in New Zealand. Ford received strong interest from prospective Thai customers

series all-wheel-drive Territory Titanium TDCi diesel-powered units were exported. Ford Australia president and chief executive officer, Bob Graziano, said it was a small, but important deal that would provide a base on which to potentially build

when it displayed a seven-seat Territory at the Bangkok Motor Show in March. Mr Graziano said it was clear the Thai customers were looking for the roominess of the family-size vehicle and the features available in the Titanium variant.

AUDI Australia has put itself on the dias – the Olympic dias, to be exact. Audi has provided medal winners in the Australian Olympic sailing team with an Audi R8 for a month. Mat Belcher, Malcolm Page, Tom Slingsby, Nathan Outteridge, Iain Jensen, Lucinda Whitty, Olivia Price and Nina Curtis will be driving the $270,000+ sports car as “congratulations” from the team sponsor. Audi Australia’s managing director, Uwe Hagen, said it was an opportunity to officially recognise the Aussie sailors as “the best in the world.” “I want to thank the entire team on behalf of Audi for their contribution,” Mr Hagen said. “Not everyone can win a medal, but the true test of a great athelete is their ability to constantly look for the next challenge prepare as well as they possibly can and push to succeed.”

Joints in stock

SPECIALISTS‌ Trevor Killalea and Cameron White fit a CV joint to a Subaru.

TWIN CITY CV JOINT is a well established business on the Border, specialising in drive shaft replacements and repairs for all makes and models of vehicles. Trevor Killalea and Cameron White run the Kendall Street, Wodonga business, which has been established for more than 15 years. A wide range of stock, from front-wheel-drive to four-wheeldrive vehicles, covers for the needs of most. “We specialise in drive shafts and CV work and we stock all that gear, Trevor said. “We’re the only place between Wagga and Shepparton that carry it all. Previously, a damaged CV joint

generally meant an expensive repair or replacement with a genuine part, but Twin City CV Joint provides quality after-market products at a fraction of the cost. All joints are made by an Australian company to the specifications of the manufacturer. This ensures a speedy service if the item is not in stock. “If we need a joint we don’t have in stock, we can generally get it overnight, Trevor said. “There are some vehicles we just can’t get after-market parts for, they have to be a genuine item and they can take a bit longer, but we stock joints for 95 per cent of vehicles. Twin City CV Joint offers a full warranty comparative to genuine manufacturers on all CV joints: two

years on front-wheel-drive vehicles and 12 months on four-wheel-drives. Prior to purchasing the business, Trevor spent 10 years working for a local dealership where he was employed as head Honda mechanic, while Cameron was with the same business for over 16 years as head Subaru mechanic. Trevor said this combined experience covered not just CV joints but all mechanical repairs, ensuring customers received the best advice and service on their vehicles, regardless of make or model, all under the one roof. For all your crive shaft repairs or replacement needs, give the team at Twin City CV Joint a call on 6056 5444.

Chipping in to take chips off Rather than having to have a car repainted, he can remove scratches and chips and polish a vehicle to an acceptable standard. And his full mobile service means he can attend to the needs of the customers at any site. Andrew said while many people can afford to buy an expensive, prestige vehicle, they may be time-limited, and therefore can’t maintain the bodywork. He says the system he uses removes all road grime prior to polishing, and his water-based polishes ensure the exterior of the vehicle, including rubbers, is well presented. He said this was very important when presenting a car for sale, or simply for those who take pride in their vehicle, regardless of make, value or finances. “In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if it’s a $100,000 car or a $2000 car, I do the best

job I can - I treat them all the same, Andrew said. “I also like to take care of pensioners. I try to keep their prices to a minimum. A lot of them are now without husbands, who used to maintain the car. Now he’s gone, that’s where I can help. And Andrew’s passion for vehicles is reflected in his attitude towards his business. “I don’t put times on a job, I just put a price on it, he said. “When I’m satisfied with it, I’m finished. I just really enjoy seeing the finished product and the reaction of the customer. They’re generally extremely happy. “I think sometimes they just don’t understand what can be achieved.

A panelbeater and spraypainter by trade, Andrew began Border Chip and Scratch Repair 10 years ago. And he hasn’t looked back. His business concentrates on the exterior presentation of vehicles, including repairs and re-finishing of bumper bars, to a standard, he says he would be happy with if the vehicle were his own. “I like to take personal ownership of a customer’s car when I have it, Andrew said. “When I’m finished, it will look like a car I’d be happy to drive. He said minor repairs to exterior paintwork and plastic bumper bars can save a client a lot of money.

Tuff as, bar nothing FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE enthusiasts on the Border have many options when it comes to choosing parts, accessories or servicing for their vehicle. But few offer the level of service of Bartlett Automotive. Owner Mathew Bartlett describes the business as a “one-stop-shop for the off-roader. But they also cover the needs of your daily driving, providing a complete service in the one workshop. This includes four-wheel-drive and light vehicle servicing, pre-trip preparation and a large range of four-wheeldrive accessories. “We do suspension upgrades, supply and fit bull bars, side steps, performance exhausts and modules for diesel engines, Mathew said.

“Just the exhaust can make a big difference to performance, but if you include the module, you can save up to 10 per cent off your fuel bill. Another popular item is the Tuff Bars bull bar. Bartletts are the only distributor of the rugged, Australian-made product in the region. Mathew said the bull bars were proving very popular with farmers needing protection from collisions with animals. “We see a lot of farmers who have hit kangaroos, he said. “Any of the other bars will fold up. They might protect the car a little, but the Tuff Bars are a solid bit of gear. Anyone who has hit a kangaroo, or is on a farm, wants those bars.

Mathew said the Tuff Bars come with a lifetime warranty, in aluminium or steel, and are the only manufacturer to offer double side rails for extra protection. And they are Australian-design-rule compliant, offering peace of mind. “They’ve all been tested to show they are airbag compatible, so they are proven to be safe, Mathew said. “The aluminium bar has actually been tested and shown to be stronger than some other steel bars. Bartletts also offer two-inch lift kits for four-wheel-drives, a legal upgrade, using major brands such as Bilstein, Lovells and Tough Dog. You will also find a range of recovery gear, camping equipment and many other accessories in their store.

Rent rates down

Enzo Raimondo

ACCORDING to our most recent data on the rental market, the availability of rental homes has contracted slightly in the three months ending in July. A vacancy rate of 1.9 per cent was recorded across metropolitan Melbourne, with the lowest level of vacant rental homes being found in the outer suburbs, where a rate of one per cent was recorded. The highest vacancy rate in the metropolitan area was recorded in the suburbs within four kilometres of the CBD, where 2.3 per cent of rental homes managed by a real estate agent were vacant. The middle suburbs had a vacancy rate of two per cent, which is tighter than earlier in the year. Overall vacancy rates are slightly lower than a year ago. tition for vacant homes than was the case a few years ago. This is confirmed by information that shows median rents have shown little overall growth in the last quarter. The REIV’s vacancy rate data is very broad: it segments the city into four areas based on radial distance from the CBD. As a result, some segments of the market may differ: this is particularly the case with the affordable segment, where demand clearly outstrips supply. In regional Victoria vacancy rates remain tight in Bendigo (1 per cent) and in Ballarat (1.9 per cent), but high in Geelong, where a rate of 4.7 per cent was recorded. More broadly, in regional Victoria a higher vacancy rate is recorded than in metropolitan Melbourne, a situation opposite to such reported a year ago.

SOLD‌ This Wodonga property sold after the purchaser read the review in NewsWeekly.

Home and hosed with NewsWeekly CHARM, style and a touch of history were the words writer Trevor Jackson used to describe a home Wodonga Real Estate were offering for sale. A week or two earlier, a Queensland couple – who were relocating to the Border for his work in the Army – inquired about homes here. They were after something “a little different. They had a look around, before the wife had to return home for her job.

The man was visiting a friend when he was shown the edition of Newsweekly, which featured a story on the home. He forwarded a copy of the article to his wife, she loved what she read and the couple then bought the house “down the line so to speak. “The article certainly helped sell the home, Clinton Harvey from Wodogna Real Estate said. “The buyers loved the article, more importantly, they loved the home.

For all pest and termite control including pre-purchase inspections.

ON THE lookout for a pest control operator? Well, the people who advertise with us (see below) are recognised leaders in their field. As for the rest, the website PestControl.com.au provides details of professionals capable of carrying out quality termite inspections and other pest related concerns. The website is Australia’s most comprehensive pest control directory. Qualified businesses are listed region by region. So tell family and friends in other parts of Australia about the website, because pests of all sorts aren’t only found on the Border.

ACTION‌ The time to act against bugs and pests is now.

High Country Pest Control

Andrew Fagan’s Albury Wodonga Pest Control

CREEPY crawlies. They can enter your home anywhere, anytime. Often, many are not pests, being described more aptly as “nuisances. However, attention is required if they are to be eradicated. Often - especially at this time of year - pest controllers are asked many, many questions. Some of the more common ones include: What about my cat and dog - are they safe? When you spray, should I stay at home, or leave? I’m not sure what kind of pest I have. Will termites attack a new house? What does it mean if I find a lot of ants around our home? I’ve found an old wasps nest on our patio....what should we do about it? Our neighbours have pests and they are going to get the house sprayed....should we move out? Do pest control companies always find what it is, or do you sometimes miss seeing something? The list goes on and on, however, as they say in the classics, it is better to be safe than sorry. Always be on your guard, and remember, there are some household pests going around on two feet.

The worry is over

1045132-KG35-12

ACT now ... that’s the advice of the Australian Pest Controllers Association. “The bugs will soon be coming out of hibernation and hatching - and in six to eight weeks it will be too late to act, came the advice down the phone. The telephone attendant in the Sydney suburb of Rozelle - home of the APCA - is about to be inundated with callers, mostly asking “how do you get rid of ‘em? The ‘em is bugs, any type of bug. Now, according to our advisor, it’s mainly cockroaches, rats and mice. “It’s 27 degrees in Sydney today. If it rains soon we will have problems with mice. When there’s some sun and rain, the rats and mice come out to play. And when the sun comes out, then everything comes out. “You name the bug ... and the bug is here, our ‘plant’ among the pests said. “They are not here yet, but they will be in six to eight weeks. “People should be spraying their homes for pests now. If they wait until October-November, it will be too late. “When the weather’s consistently between 22 and 25 degrees, the pests will start hatching. August-September is a ‘shoulder period’ and not much happens, but as soon as the pests hatch, it’s too late. “Act now with your spraying. It won’t be long before it’s too late. And that’s when we will start to get hundreds of calls asking what people should do. Too late, they should have done it. Contact the Australian Pest Controllers Association on 1300-660-200 or see www.pestcontrol. org.au

Local Sport It’s Christmas come early Simon

Says with SIMON CORR JUST as many say “I can’t believe it’s Christmas already,” I am feeling the same about my Christmas ... the Ovens and Murray finals. This year promises something special, with all five teams a genuine chance of taking it out. Player management, double chances and weeks off will play a part in the final result, but for now, it’s all about week one. Qualifying final, Wangaratta Rovers v Albury, Birallee Park, tomorrow: Rovers took the points in a ‘dead rubber’ last week. The Tigers rested Morris medallist Shaun Daly, and key forwards Andy Carey and Luke Daly. Their re-introduction should give Albury a massive boost. Joel Mackie is back to his best and will play a pivotal role in the outcome. The Rovers have been the ‘sleeping giant’ all year and the dominance of Karl Norman has been a telling factor in their success. Barry Hall still looms as the X-factor for the Rovers, despite being well held last week by Tiger Jay Koeler. In a close affair, I think Albury may get through to meet Yarrawonga next week. Tigers by five points.

Albury

Elimination final, Lavington v Wodonga Raiders, John Flower Oval, Sunday: The Panthers got the win last time, but the stakes are higher here: with the loser finished. When playing to their potential, both are capable of anything and a lot will depend on the mental facet. The Raiders will still be riding the emotional high of last weekend, when Patty Rose brought up his ton and secured the Doug Strang Medal. The midfield will be more direct and effective in this game. Lavington has settled into a good rythym in the second half of the season, with Matt Pendergast dominating in close. In what I think could be the match of the season, I think the Raiders might pinch a four-point margin.

The ins and outs MARK Treloar knows plenty about interior decorating – and he knows a lot about what’s going on outdoors. Especially when it comes to footy. Mark was the top tipster at NewsWeekly this season. He selected “the card” last weekend, to finish 2012 with 72 winners. Helen Goldsworthy, who also picked five winners in the last round, and the Lavington Panthers were equal second with 69 winners, while Wodonga real estate agent Alan Hodgson came home with a wet sail to end up with 67 winners.

Hang on

FAMILY CAR CENTRE

IT’S the clothes line, but is it also the end of the line for these jumpers this season? The time honoured practice of “jumper washing duty” was evident by this picture snapped from the road bordering the backyard of a Beechworth home. As they say, when your number’s up, it’s up.

785 Mate Street, North Albury NUMBER CRUNCHING… An end of season clearance?

Ducking in for a win By TREVOR JACKSON AFTER more than a decade in the wilderness, Border basketball fans will be celebrating when their beloved Bandits take on Knox for the SEABL south conference title on Saturday night. Brad Chalmers’ boys have certainly turned heads this season, and now have their chance to show the league they’re up to the task once again. And there’s none more hopeful of success than Jack Duck. Duck grew up playing for Albury Cougars junior representative teams from the tender age of five, taking to the court in the under 12s through to the under 18s. He then progressed to the Cougars’ senior side, playing in the Victorian Country Basketball League before stepping up to the Bandits roster. But despite his years of experience, this opportunity has not been lost on the 20-yearold. “I think it’ll be an experience of a lifetime,” Duck confessed. “I was there watching in 2001 when they won it. You always want to see the Bandits do well and now we’re actually here. It’s one thing to see it, but being a part of it - it’s really exciting.” Duck said the excitement around the club was something he’d never witnessed. “It’s the first time I’ve been a part of something like this,” he said. “At every training, everyone’s bouncing around, running on adrenaline. “We’re all excited and keen to get going.” Duck’s game has settled down this year, after he played a pivotal role last season running the point. With the addition of Jazzmarr Ferguson, taking the lead role, Duck said he has been

EXCITED… Jack Duck is ‘pumped-up’ for the grand final on Saturday night. able to concentrate more on his game without the added team pressure. He said the experience he gained from Ferugson was invaluable. The Bandits have been the success story of the league this season and Duck said it has made the whole experience much more enjoyable. “I’ve had an enormous amount of fun playing under Brad and with this team,” he said. “We have 14 good guys who are willing to work hard and try to reach our goal. We originally set a goal for eight to 10 wins. Once we started playing together and got a feel as to where

we could actually go, that goal went up.” Duck said he hoped to see a big crowd on Saturday night to help the home side across the line. “I just hope to see heaps of people come in and get superloud and get us over the line,” he said. “I love playing in front of family and friends, people you know. Our crowd is probably one of the best in the league, so hopefully it’ll be like that Saturday.” Saturday’s game tips off at 7.30pm at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre.
