AFTER MIDNIGHT town centre purified; bars closed at midnight by provincial governor

HUA HIN THAILAND The recent enforcement of midnight closing times for the bars in central Hua Hin by order of the Prachuap Kiri Khan Provincial Governor has sparked a variety of reactions from those affected, and AWOL has dusted off it’s crystal ball to have a look into a possible future for the town... It’s midnight in the compact former nightlife area of Hua Hin, cleansed in the February 2011 purge by the visionary authorities in Prachuap Kiri Khan. Soi Binthabaht, Poolsuk Road, Soi Selekam, Soi Sarakam, the Night Bazaar and the surrounding streets are deserted, as families and elderly couples have been tucked up in their luxurious hotel rooms for a good hour. The Night Market, once a bustling hub of the town has ceased to exist as it’s former customers now travel to Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket for holidays. The town is finally returning to it’s quaint traditional fishing village charm. A lone policeman rides down the former den of iniquity that was Soi Binthabaht and wonders what has happened to all the people who used to work in the area; the motorcycle taxi riders, the food vendors, the hill tribe wooden frog sellers, the flower sellers, and of course all the bar and other business owners and their staff. As he reaches Poolsuk Road, he glances over at the wall where all the restaurants used to be lined who catered for the tourists. He thinks about the good times he had with all his police colleagues as they engaged in good natured banter, and feels a bit sad that they have now all gone to other police forces as they are no longer needed in Hua Hin. Many of them are now in Cha Am and Khao Takiab as these areas were strangely omitted from the clean up, although with tourist numbers to the area falling, in contrast to other parts of Thailand, he thinks that they won’t be needed there soon either. continued from page 1 The policeman sits and ponders about how the strange foreigners like to party until late and have attractive girls attending to them, and go to karaoke bars, and that now most of them don’t come to Hua Hin any more. He remembers how awe struck he was at the strength and determination of the authorities to enforce strong morals in the face of strenuous efforts by the booze drenched whoremonger bar owners to bribe or threaten them to allow the continued descent of Hua Hin into a sordid mix of sex and drugs and rock’n’roll. When they didn’t get what they wanted they tried to band together and resist the rule of law, but they were weak, arguing among themselves, and easily forced into eventually quitting their businesses. Once a few gave up they fell like a row of dominoes, and left town with their dirty tails between their legs.

A soi dog howls hungrily in the distance and is quickly joined by thousands more to shake him out of his thoughts. His stomach grumbles and he looks around for the som tam stall he had always frequented, before quickly remembering that it had gone at the same time as the bars did. He spots something moving out of the corner of his eye and tenses before realising that it was just some tumbleweed drifting along the empty street. He radios in ‘All quiet’ to the station, shakes his head, and as he rides slowly past the temple he wais, and prays that he will have enough money to feed his family this month.

glasgow, scotland Man uses loyalty card to fix toddler’s genitals Clydebank man Ross McBride tried to repair a one-year-old’s swollen private parts with a supermarket loyalty card after accidentally hitting him with a football. Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that McBride, 23, feeling frustrated that he had not received a Valentine card from his girlfriend in February 2008 kicked a football with venom, which then accidentally struck a toddler between the legs. After a time McBride, of Newshot Court, noticed that the child’s private member was red and swollen, so he bizarrely attempted to fix it by using a loyalty card that he snapped to arrest the swelling. At first he tried to compress the boy’s private area, but when that didn’t work he used the card parts

to saw at the genitals to get to the swelling, the court heard. The boy was taken to hospital by his mum, where doctors treated him for bruising, swelling and cuts to his penis and thighs. He has since made a full recovery. Mcbride, who suffers from autism, admitted using culpable and reckless conduct. Prosecutor Iain Bradley emphasised that there was no sexual aspect to the case. Piaseczno, poland Burglary in Poland goes wrong as robber asks victim to let him out Bungling burglar Pawel Adamczyk got himself into a spot of bother during a recent raid in Poland when, unable to escape with his stash of stolen goods, he had to ask his victim to let him out of the house.

Adamczyk, 27, was drunk as he tried to steal from a house in Poland in a crime that went not quite to plan. The burglar had made a hole in a garden fence before entering the property but he later found that he could not escape. Mr Adamczyk could not squeeze through the gap in the fence as he had too many stolen goods. Not wanting to leave the wide load behind Mr Adamczyk knocked on the front door and asked the owner to let him out. He was arrested after filling his coat with stolen items and drinking a bottle of whisky. The owner said: ‘I walloped him and called the cops.’

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. On cloud nine In a state of blissful happiness. Whenever a phrase includes a number, like the whole nine yards, at sixes and sevens etc., then attempts to find its derivation usually focus on the number. ‘On cloud nine’ is no exception. A commonly heard explanation is that the expression originated as one of the classifications of cloud which were defined by the US Weather Bureau in the 1950s, in which ‘Cloud Nine’ denotes the fluffy cumulonimbus type that are considered so attractive. Another explanation is that the phrase derives from Buddhism and that Cloud Nine is one of the stages of the progress to enlightenment of a Bodhisattva (one destined to become a Buddha). Neither of these explanations holds water. To begin with, both the cloud classifications and the Buddhist stages to enlightenment have ten levels. To single out the last but one stage of either is rather like attributing the source of the ‘whole nine yards’ to American Football, where it is ten yards rather than nine that is a significant measure. Also, the fact that nine is far from the only number that has been linked with clouds, argues against those origins. Early examples of ‘cloud’ expressions include clouds seven, eight, nine and even thirty-nine. It seems that it is the clouds themselves, rather than the number of them, that were in the thoughts of those who coined this phrase. The imagery was originally of a ‘cloud cuckoo land’ or ‘head in the clouds’ dreaminess, induced by either intoxication or inspiration, rather than the ‘idyllic happiness’ that we now associate with the phrase. The early references all come from mid 20th century USA and the earliest that I’ve found is in Albin Pollock’s directory of slang, The Underworld Speaks, 1935:

Tel: 032 516587 terrace90@gmail.com www.terrace-90.com Soi 90, Phetkasem Rd, Hua Hin

“Cloud eight, befuddled on account of drinking too much liquor.” ‘Cloud nine’ comes a little later, for example, in The Oxnard Press-Courier, August 1946: “I think he has thought of everything, unless the authorities pull something new on him out of cloud nine.” Around the same period we find clouds seven and thirtynine, in The San Mateo Times, April 1952 and Ross’s Hustlers, 1956, respectively: “Mantovani’s skilled use of reeds and strings puts this disc way up on Cloud Seven.” “That stuff is way up on Cloud Thirty-nine.” The early favourite was ‘cloud seven’ and many of the oldest citations use that form, as in this piece from The Dictionary of American Slang, 1960, which was the first printed definition of the term “Cloud seven - completely happy, perfectly satisfied; in a euphoric state.” This early preference for seven as the significant number may have been influenced by the existing phrase ‘seventh heaven’. Since the 1980s or so, ‘cloud nine’ has become predominant. That has probably been influenced by the use of ‘cloud nine’ in popular music - George Harrison adopted the term as the title of his 1987 album and, more notably, The Temptations’ ‘psychedelic soul’ album of the same name, in 1969. Linguistic hype being what it is, we now hear people expressing their happiness with the inflationary ‘cloud ten’, which brings us back to the cumulonimbus/ Buddhist theories. Eighth heaven anyone?

MAN OF THE HOUSE A husband had just finished reading a new book entitled, “You Can Be THE Man of Your House.” He stormed to his wife in the kitchen and announced, “From now on, you need to know that I am the man of this house and my word is Law. You will prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I’m done eating my meal, you will serve me a scrumptious dessert.. After dinner, you are going to go upstairs with me and we will have the kind of sex that I want! Afterwards, you are going to draw me a bath so I can relax. You will wash my back and towel me dry and bring me my robe.. Then, you will massage my feet and hands. Then tomorrow, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?” The wife replied, “The funeral director would be my first guess.” take the blue pill A woman sees her doctor and complains that her husband is losing interest in sex. The doctor gives her a pill, but warns her it is still experimental and tells her to slip it into his mashed potatoes at dinner. So, that night at dinner, she does. About a week later she’s back at the doctor’s office. She says, “Doc, the pill worked great! I put it in the potatoes like you suggested. It wasn’t five minutes and he jumps up, rakes all the food and dishes off the table, grabs me, rips all my clothes off and ravishes me right then and there on the table.” The doctor says, “I’m sorry, I didn’t realise the pill was so strong, I’m sure the manufacturers will be glad to pay for any damages.” “Naah...” she says, “that’s okay. We wouldn’t go back to that restaurant anyway.”

085 429 0378 the ladder A man is walking along one day and he comes upon a ladder. Looking up, he sees that the ladder disappears into the clouds. Curious, he begins to climb. Before long, he is in the clouds. He looks around and sees the most horribly ugly woman he has ever seen in his life. Obese, snaggle-toothed, matted hair..... She looks at him, beckons, and says, “Have sex with me, or climb the ladder to success.” Well, having no intention of doing anything with this woman, the man keeps climbing. A bit further on, he comes upon a woman slightly less ugly than the woman before. Not attractive, by any means, but not repugnant. “Have sex with me, or climb the ladder to success,” she says. Again, the man elects to continue his climb. Before long, he comes upon another woman. This one is actually attractive. Not a knock-out, but very pleasing. “Have sex with me, or climb the ladder to success.” Well, he figures the women keep getting better and better looking as he gets higher and higher. So he decides to continue climbing. A bit farther up is the most gorgeous woman he’s ever seen in his life! In a sultry voice she says, “Have sex with me, or climb the ladder to success.” Well, needless to say, he is very tempted. But he just can’t imagine what could top this woman, so he decides to climb higher. On the next cloud up is a horrid 500lb man. You can see the lice in his hair, he stinks, his clothes are ratty..... “Who are you?” our climber asks in horror. Grinning a toothless grin, the man looks at him and says, “Hi. I’m Cess.”

the awol pool ladder

A new individuals only pool competition is being introduced to the Hua Hin area by AWOL. Sign up for free at www.freeonlineleague. com/myleague/awolpoolladder - you will be contacted when the ladder is ready to start, planned to be when enough players sign up. The idea of the ladder is to provide all levels of pool players the opportunity to play over a longer period of games than the team leagues allow, thus giving a better chance to both improve and enjoy a longer stint at the table. The ladder concept allows players to find their own level and after a short time means they will generally play against others of a similar standard, but with the chance to play better players to learn from and hopefully beat sometimes! Once the ladder is established a knockout competition will also be introduced. If you are having any problems accessing or signing on to the website or for more information please email info@awolonline. net. More details next week. Go to www.freeonlineleague.com/ myleague/awolpoolladder to sign up now!

NEW SEASON A meeting was held last Wednesday to determine the details for the new season. The most important decision was who would take over from Barry and Jill in running the league, and Brian from King Bar has stepped up to the plate. The new season will start on Wednesday 9th March and will again consist of two divisions. The teams in each division, which are of equal stature, will be determined by a random draw. Discussions were held on a variety of issues but the only change, other than the running of the league, is a minor one to do with late starting matches. Details of this and all other information will be supplied to each participating team. Division composition and fixtures should be available in next week’s AWOL, as well as via the websites http://huahinsocial. leaguerepublic.com and www.awolonline. net/pool.html

HUA HIN DARTS LEAGUE

new season The new season was discussed at a meeting last Tuesday, and the following were agreed upon; The league will be run by a group comprising Rune, Ankana, Golf, Ball and Steve - this was voted unanimously by those present. The new season will start on Tuesday 8th March 2011, and it is hoped that it will comprise two 10 team divisions; the deadline for registration and fee payment is Tuesday 1st March 2011; the fee is 1000 baht per team as before. The use of this money is for administration costs and as outlined below for sponsorship raised. Sponsorship of the league - it is hoped will be expanded, and subsequent to the meeting the existing sponsor Thaieiendom and the Bangkok Schengen Visa Office has agreed to continue, while two other sponsors have verbally committed funds as well. Every competing team will be supplied with a new dartboard along with sponsor materials, and trophies as usual will be presented to winning teams and individuals. If all commitments come to fruition a number of other innovations are being considered including donations to charity, transport being provided to and from Cha Am for important Cup or individuals stages, a ‘Ring The Bell’ fund to cover the individual champion’s extra bar tab on the night and a paid for end of season party.

One major change was agreed to the end of season individuals competition, which is to increase it to a top 32 from 16, which will be run over two Tuesdays in succession. It was also agreed that the 32 players involved should be 16 from each division. As it currently stands there are 19 teams who have stated their desire to participate, and hopefully one more will be added before next Tuesday. Full information and contacts will be available from next week but in the meantime any queries can be sent to steve@awolonline. net.

Reliability premier league news kicked off by bobby’s bar Fixtures AND PREDICTIONS

(all times Thailand)

Saturday, 26 February 2011 Aston Villa v Blackburn, 22:00 Both sides could do with a win here to ease fears of relegation, particularly the home side. Rovers are pretty tight defensively though and we think Villa could struggle to break them down - draw. Everton v Sunderland, 22:00 Everton will be boosted by their FA Cup win against holders Chelsea and are another team that would benefit greatly from three points. This is likely to be another close game and another draw. Newcastle v Bolton, 22:00 Two teams destined for mid-table mediocrity and at present the home side are in decent form. Bolton seem to be treading water somewhat after their impressive first half of the season.Home win. Wigan v Man Utd, 22:00 United were poor in the Cup with a much changed side and Ferguson won’t want to risk another performance like that, despite the fact that Wigan are in no great shape themselves. Away win. Wolverhampton v Blackpool, 22:00 Blackpool’s unexpected win over Spurs has taken some pressure off them but Wolves are fighting for survival as well and we wouldn’t be at all surprised if they grab the win here. Sunday, 27 February 2011 West Ham v Liverpool, 20:30 West Ham have an absolutely woeful record against Liverpool and it is hard to predict anything other than a defeat for them here; however they are on a decent run and the return of Hitzlsperger has beefed up their midfield. This could be a high scoring game but the most likely team to win is, naturally, Liverpool. Man City v Fulham, 22:00 Despite being in 13th place, Fulham are by no means out of the relegation scrap, and although they are in good form we think City will plunge them right back in the middle of it with a home win. Monday, 28 February 2011 Stoke v West Brom, 20:00 Another Midlands derby match with West Brom another team needing a win. Stoke are not mathematically safe by any stretch of the imagination but a win here would push them close to the mark. We think a home win is on the cards.

Wednesday, 2 March 2011 Chelsea v Man Utd, 02:45 The big game of the week sees Chelsea well off the pace in the league, but with a good win in Europe under their belts. United have been doing barely enough in their games and will need to be on their mettle here. We have a feeling that this will not be the case and that Chelsea will throw the title race open again with a home win.

Olympic stadium to become ‘world class’ car boot sale venue

london, england Following the announcement that West Ham United are the preferred bidder as the future anchor tenant for London’s Olympic stadium, it has been revealed that one of the other uses will see it transformed into the nation’s finest car boot sale venue after the 2012 games. Determined to leave a lasting cultural legacy for the country, the stadium’s governing body has accepted a bid from car boot sale organiser Roy Hobbs, who believes his events could attract buyers from as far afield as Luton. Hobbs, who currently runs several car boot sales and a market stall where you can get mobile phones unlocked, said: “We’re talking bouncy castles, a choice of up to four burger vans and of course loads of quality goods, none of them nicked.

An artists impression of what the Olympic Stadium car boot sale would look like

“There’s a woman from Rickmansworth who sells gingerbread men, she makes them herself, she’ll probably be there if her shingles aren’t playing up. “And two smashing lads in a white Renault van with several hundred pairs of white size-7 Reebok Pump trainers that they got for their birthdays but unfortunately didn’t fit.” Hobbs said the government has

already been in touch about selling the stuff that used to be in the Millennium Dome and has since been kept in a massive taxpayerfunded cardboard box. A spokesman for the Olympic Park Legacy committee said: “The Olympics are about pushing yourself to your limits and we hope that visitors will channel that spirit when they are haggling over a Poldark VHS box set or a book about how the pyramids were built by aliens, never giving up even when the seller insists he won’t take less than 50p.” He added: “Athletics meetings will continue to be held on the site for the dozen or so people who are interested, so we’re asking people not to park cars or vans on the track.”
