TIME TRAVEL? NEW PROPOSAL TO ALTER PROVINCIAL TIME ZONES WOULD MEAN HUA HIN ONE HOUR DIFFERENT TO CHA AM

HUA HIN THAILAND A Thai government ‘think tank’ has made radical proposals to help with energy saving, fuel conservation and the easing of road congestion in the Kingdom. The most striking of these is a proposal to divide the country into two time zones, north and south, with the dividing line between the two being the border between Phetchaburi and Prachuap Kiri Khan provinces. The northern time zone would continue to operate on the existing 7 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, while the southern zone, including Hua Hin, would be an hour ahead of that, placing it in the same world time zone as Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Reaction to the proposal has been mixed; AWOL interviewed tourists and expats on Monday and Tuesday, and the responses ranged from those like expat Alan Foolman, an Australian, who said, ‘This is typical of the stupid things governments do, just making jobs for the boys.’ to tourist April Ungo, from South Africa, who thought it was a good idea, ‘and might even encourage more tourists’. Thai and foreign business owners who travel regularly between the two provinces are not at all impressed however, and one, Arnold Frikinjok, a Dutch exporter, was almost incandescent with rage, saying ‘I will have to change the time on my watch, a very nice one I got in the Night Market, my mobile phone, and the clock in my brand new Mitsubishi Pajero, about five times a day! I have heard of some foolish ideas in my time but this one is right up there with building a nuclear power station in an area that has frequent powerful earthquakes!’ CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
