it’s a nice day for a... royal wedding?
HUA HIN THAILAND The town was likely to have come to a grinding halt at 4.30pm today as thousands of Thai and expat residents were expected to be fixated by the Royal Wedding between HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton being shown live on television. It is even possible that the copy of AWOL you are holding in your hand would have been delivered late as policemen vacated their traffic duties and left the lights on red so they could view the fairytale wedding. Several expat venues have arranged special parties to celebrate the day, with The Lord Webb in Khao Takiab the most prominent with its noble connections, and the most obvious place for proud British citizens to go. While the event is a public holiday in the UK, it is not in Thailand but may be treated like one by many. As it is, there is a public holiday with Royal connections next Thursday (5th May) which is Coronation Day (see ‘No AWOL Next Week’ story on page 2 for more details). Thailand was due to be represented at the wedding by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, although at press time there was no official confirmation that she would be attending.
