Charity begins at home

Expats rally round stricken Englishman HUA HIN, THAILAND An early December day in the idyllic resort of Bang Saphan, some two hours or so south of Hua Hin, and a smoothie on the beach for breakfast was the normal order of the day for one former resident of Hua Hin who had moved away some months earlier. Chris Brown, once a well known figure to be found at his wife’s bar Sugar Cane in Hua Hin, had become as popular in his new home as he had been in Hua Hin, and the waitress who brought him his morning drink had made a little extra, so encouraged him to drink some so she could top it up with the excess. He obliged, only to suddenly double up in pain and fall to the floor. He was rushed to the local hospital who quickly diagnosed that he had a perforated ulcer in his stomach, and he was transferred to a hospial in Chumphon for an emergency operation. Four operations later and at least two weeks in critical condition, Chris is still suffering, both physically and financially, as the bills for his treatment mount up. Most would expect that his health insurance would cover these bills, but as

the shape of Hua Hin After Dark and in particular a Norwegian called Ole, got their act together to help Chris; at first it was personal donations of cash, which got him moved from a crowded noisy ward to a private room when Chris was in his life and death struggle, and now several fund raising events have taken place or are planned to at least alleviate the financial burden.
