A DECADE OF MISSED OPPORTUNITY JAZZ FESTIVAL 10 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR BUT NOTHING LEARNED
HUA HIN THAILAND Every June since 2001, Hua Hin has hosted the annual Jazz Festival. Every year thousands upon thousands descend on the town. Every year many more miss out because of the poor organisation and promotion that has dogged the event for several years. And every year the opportunity to make it a truly great event is missed. AWOL ran a similar front page last year, where we wondered if the festival was going to happen at all; it did of course, and large numbers attended and enjoyed the shows, but the same problems that always occur were evident again. Not enough thought is given to traffic management or providing something like a park and ride service, meaning, as there normally is when any event takes place here, gridlock for the town. The planning of the event, in terms of other activities connected to the festival, like artist workshops, or smaller stages dotted across the town and more involvement of the bars, restaurants and other local businesses to give the town a real ‘festival feel’., is non-existent Marketing opportunities and commercial possibilities could be extended beyond the main sponsors of the event, and in any case all of these things should be in place months before, not just a couple of weeks prior to the festival. As a weekly publication we are normally able to print the lineup and dates of the festival for our readers, but almost all other local publications in Thai or English are monthly, thus denying them a chance to join in with one of, if not the largest annual event for the town. We have printed in our ‘Hua Hin Live’ section that the festival will happen between Friday 10th and Sunday 12th June, as these are the dates on the TAT website; if correct, then with less than four weeks to go, the organisers are leaving it too late once again. Maybe next year will be different?

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. The last straw The final additional small burden that makes the entirety of one’s difficulties unbearable. The full version of this metaphorical phrase is ‘the last straw which breaks the camel’s back’, which has an Old Testament sound about it. Searches there produce many references to straw and camels amongst the smiting and begetting, but no ‘last straw’. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations lists it as a ‘mid 17th century proverb’, but offers no supporting evidence for that view. The earliest citation that can be found is from The Edinburgh Advertiser, May 1816: “MR. BROUGHAM remarked, that if it [a tax on soap] were only 3d. a head, or 4d. and 5d. upon the lower orders, yet straw upon straw was laid till the last straw broke the camel’s back.” Some authorities suggest that the phrase is a variant on an olde proverb ‘it is the last feather that breaks the

horse’s back’. That may be so. The earliest found for that is after 1816 though and, of course, much later than mid 17th century. That’s also from The Edinburgh Advertiser, in November 1829: “It may be very well for Mr. O’Connell, in his own exultation of heart, to ascribe the success of the Catholic Relief Bill to his ‘agitation;’ but the fact is, that ‘agitation’ was only the cause of Emancipation in the same sense in which it is true that the last feather breaks the horse’s back.” Last but not least there is, or rather was in 1843, a merger of the two phrases. This appeared in The Southport American in October 1843: “And finally, the ‘feather which breaks the camel’s back’ having been added to Sir Walter’s burthen, he was struck down by paralysis, and after lingering a few months, was gathered to his fathers.”

THE MARRIAGE A man met a beautiful blonde lady and decided he wanted to marry her right away. She said, ‘But we don’t know anything about each other.’ He said, ‘That’s all right, we’ll learn about each other as we go along.’ So she consented, they were married, and off they went on a honeymoon at a very nice resort. One morning they were lying by the pool, when he got up off of his towel, climbed up to the 10 metre board and did a two and a half tuck, followed by three rotations in the pike position, at which point he straightened out and cut the water like a knife. After a few more demonstrations, he came back and lay down on the towel. She said, ‘That was incredible!’ He said, ‘I used to be an Olympic diving champion. You see, I told you we’d learn more about each other as we went along.’ So she got up, jumped in the pool and started doing lengths. After seventy-five lengths she climbed out of the pool, lay down on her towel and was hardly out of breath. He said, ‘That was incredible! Were you an Olympic endurance swimmer?’ ‘No,’ she said, ‘I was a prostitute in Liverpool but I worked both sides of the Mersey’. MISSING WIFE The Wife has been missing now for two weeks. The Police rang and said to me today to ‘be prepared for the worst’ So I went to the Salvation Army and got her clothes back OPERATION This older Jewish man was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to receive the anesthesia he asked to speak to his son. “Yes Dad, what is it?” “Don’t be nervous, son, do your best and just remember, if it doesn’t go well, if something happens to me ... your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife....”

Daily, weekly or long term OLD MAN A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath he ordered a banana split. The waitress asked kindly, “Crushed nuts?” “No,” he replied, “Arthritis.” THE CAMEL A Captain in the foreign legion was transferred to a desert outpost. On his orientation tour he noticed a very old, seedy looking camel tied out back of the enlisted men’s barracks. He asked the Sargeant leading the tour, what the camel was for. The Sargeant replied, “Well sir, it’s a long way from anywhere, and the men have natural sexual urges, so when they do, uh, we have the camel.” The Captain said, “Well, if it’s good for morale, then I guess it’s all right with me.” After he had been at the fort for about 6 months, the Captain could not stand it anymore, so he told his Sargeant, “BRING IN THE CAMEL!!!” The Sarge shrugged his shoulders and led the camel into the Captain’s quarters. The Captain got a foot stool and proceeded to have vigorous sex with the camel. As he stepped, satisfied, down from the stool and was buttoning his pants he asked the Sargeant, “Is that how the enlisted men do it?” The Sargeant replied, “Well sir, they usually just use it to ride into town.” LONG LIFE A man asked his doctor if he thought he’d live to be a hundred. The doctor asked the man, “Do you smoke or drink?” “No,” he replied, “I’ve never done either.” “Do you gamble, drive fast cars, and fool around with women?” inquired the doctor. “No, I’ve never done any of those things either.” “Well then,” said the doctor, “what do you want to live to be a hundred for?”

AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 Romance will bloom in your sign this week, coating everything with a thin layer of pollen and making a mess before germinating into the overripe and rotten fruit of routine. PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 20 There will be no major changes in your life this week, which given the fires and barracudas, is pretty terrible news. ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20 Sleep will elude you as you wrestle all night with existential questions of mortality and meaning as well as a couple of random wrestlers.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 You’ll realise the people asking you to choose between hugs and drugs have set up a false dichotomy after finding you can have both at once. GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Remember, only you can give yourself permission to be happy, although the people in charge of giving you permission to use the bathroom may have something to say about that. CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22 You had no idea the love life of the nuthatch was so vigorous, so obsessive, and so likely to result in bird mess in your hair. LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22 You hate the phrase “We’re through the looking glass here, people,” but you’ll have to use it anyway this week when you and a bunch of people go through a looking glass.
VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22 The stars hate to be the ones to tell you, but the problem with you is certainly not that you love too much. LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 23 People will say you’ve hit a new low even for you, which is depressing, as they clearly haven’t been paying attention to a thing you’ve done. SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 21 You’ll score a bunch of great stereo equipment and furniture from your neighbours, who happen to die when you go into their house and stab them and take all their things. SAGITTARIUS NOV 22 – DEC 21 You’ll finally give in to a persistent coworker’s desire to, as he puts it, “spread you wide open, throw your feet up on the mantel, and really go to town,” but to your great dismay there seems to be sex involved.

Ils étaient in- séparables. 1964 - 1968 (1968 : Création du Fusion Jazz : « In A Silent Way », compositeur : Joe Zawinul.
» (Herbie Hancock).

FIXTURES AND PREDICTIONS
(all times Thailand)
SATURDAY, 14 MAY 2011 Blackburn v Man Utd, 18:45 The game that can mathematically confirm that United have won the title, and we fully expect them, even with a likely weaker team, to win this one. Blackpool v Bolton, 18:45 Bolton are now only playing for position but Blackpool desperately need the win. We think a draw. Sunderland v Wolverhampton, 18:45 Wolves have given themselves a huge chance to escape relegation and a win here would virtually seal their safety; Sunderland are not in good form but we think this may also be a draw. West Brom v Everton, 18:45 Both just playing for position, but both in good form as well. Could be a good game and another draw. SUNDAY, 15 MAY 2011 Chelsea v Newcastle, 19:30 It will probably be mathematically impossible for Chelsea to catch Man Utd by the time this is played but they still need to absolutely confirm second place, so we expect a narrow win for the boys in blue. Arsenal v Aston Villa, 22:00 In reality, it doesn’t make much difference finishing third or fourth as far as the Champions League goes, but psychologically Arsenal need to finish strongly. Neither side are in great form really but we think a home win. Birmingham v Fulham, 22:00 Birmingham are not yet safe and really need a win, while Fulham still have an outside chance of Europe. Tough call but we are plumping for an away win. Liverpool v Tottenham, 22:00 Liverpool are in red hot form and will want to despatch Spurs to confirm 5th place. The away team have faded badly and we can’t see anything other than a home win. Wigan v West Ham, 22:00 Do or die time for the Hammers - anything less than a win here will almost certainly mean relegation. If Parker plays they have a chance, if he doesn’t they are doomed. Wigan are also in the same boat and this is likely to be a nervous edgy match with lots of errors. Home win. WEDNESDAY, 18 MAY 2011 Man City v Stoke, 01:45 A rerun of the FA Cup Final just four days later, and that match will surely have an impact on this, making a prediction very tricky. Both teams have qualified for Europe and neither can move significantly up the table, although Stoke could drop by as many as five places if they lose. We think City have the squad to be able to win this one.

FA CUP FINAL SATURDAY, 14 MAY 2011 Man City v Stoke, 21:00 The glory of the FA Cup has been steadily diminished, from the moment that the winners in the 1999 final (Manchester United) were not allowed to defend the Cup (due to competing in the World Club competition), through the choosing of weakened teams by top sides, to this moment when the Final is taking place on the same day as other matches; it should be the only professional football match taking place in England on this day, or even this weekend, whatever the scheduling difficulties. Hopefully these two teams, and Stoke in particular, will bring some of the shine back in what should be a classic encounter of finesse versus strength. Stoke to encapsulate what the FA Cup is all about with a historic win.

LONDON, ENGLAND After QPR avoided a points deduction for breaching transfer regulations, the Football Association have confirmed that they only inflict the harshest punishments on clubs that are unable to afford better lawyers than them. The decision, which was originally expected on Friday, was delayed until 12 o’clock on Saturday, while the FA compared their own legal team against the vastly superior members of those representing the West London club “After checking the credentials of QPR’s defence we have decided that it would be easier for us to impose a fine rather than the points deductions we normally hand out to less wealthy clubs,” revealed an FA spokesperson.

FA CONFIRM RULES ARE OPTIONAL FOR CLUBS WITH EXPENSIVE LAWYERS Warnock - redefining hypocrisy since the Tevez affair
“We were also a little worried about their ability to spring a counter attack which could cost us millions of pounds that could be better wasted by trying to bribe FIFA officials to give us a World Cup tournament sometime this century.” Swansea, who finished third, said they have not ruled out the possibility of taking action over the decision despite not caring about it when they were sat in fourth.
“If we don’t go up via the play-offs, it’s important that we at least give our fans something to feel really bitter about,” said Swansea chairman, Huw Jenkins. There has also been further criticism that the £875k fine given to QPR will have about as much impact on the club’s cash-happy owners as the Lib Dems have on government policy, but the FA remain defiant. “We also had to take into account health and safety issues,” the spokesperson revealed. “If we’d imposed a points deduction, Neil Warnock’s resulting meltdown would have made Fukushima look like a puncture on a child’s tricycle.”
PM OUTRAGED AS LORD TRIESMAN ADMITS FAILING TO BRIBE FIFA
LONDON, ENGLAND The Prime Minister could not contain his fury today after four members of FIFA accused the former chairman of England’s World Cup bid of stubbornly neglecting to offer filthy wads of cash for their votes. After tearfully confessing to the claims, Labour peer Lord Triesman was viciously criticised in the House of Commons for having the absurd notion that morality has any place when dealing with football’s governing body. “What an ignorant fool,” the Prime Minister told the House. “You can tell he’s not a Tory.” “I mean, not only did we have the future king of England in on this bid but we even managed to get the darling of English football on top of that, and this ponce puts it all
to waste with his ‘principles’.” “Lord Triesman is a damn sight older than me so he should be well aware that bribery is actually one of the principles our country is founded upon.” Cameron continued. “Just look at our government. I lured Nick Clegg into a coalition with the promise of a share in policy making and what’s more – I haven’t even allowed that cheque to clear.” Cameron has promised a review of the bidding process and it is expected that Chancellor George Osborne will announce either a new tax or cuts to the NHS to fund future payments to FIFA.
