HUA HIN THAILAND Are you a timewaster on the tee? A sloth in the sand? Don’t give ‘gimmes’ on the green? Then the Hua Hin Golf Society want to help you! The Society has launched a blog on their website (huahingolfsociety.com/blog/slowplay/) to try and address what they say is “the biggest issue in golf today .... week in and week out we watch the tour pros taking 5 hrs plus to play their rounds and we think we should do the same!” Anyone who has played golf will at some point have a round spoiled by slow play, and the accepted etiquette is to allow others to ‘play through’ if it is clear that your game is holding them up. While this does occur in Hua Hin, not enough players are observing it, and the campaign is aimed at this and other ways to help speed up play. The blog states that “ everyone can have their input with causes, cures and ideas to help – in this way all members should be able to help one another with constructive advice on the course in an effort to speed up play.” Already noted are the following suggestions; improving knowledge of the rules, being ready to play when it is your turn, dispensing with the concept of ‘last hole winner tees off first’ and offer ‘gimmes’ on putts under two feet in non-competitive games. The golfers behind this do not wish to spoil others enjoyment, or put pressure on novice or bad golfers, who can simply take a pause while others play through, but given the importance of golf to the Hua Hin area, anything that can improve the experience for golfers coming here should be welcomed, and it must be hoped that the courses themselves start to take the issue more seriously. Learn the rules, be ready to play and be nice to your fellow golfers!

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Nosy parker A ‘nosy parker’, sometimes spelled ‘nosey parker’, is a person of an overly inquisitive or prying nature. With all phrases that include a word that could conceivably be a person’s name, it’s natural to try to seek out the individual in question. Sometimes this search is fruitful, as with Hobson’s choice and Sweet Fanny Adams for example; more often, as with ‘as happy as Larry’, ‘Mickey Finn’ etc., it is a wild goose chase. The person most often associated with the phrase ‘nosy parker’ is Matthew Parker, who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1559 to 1575. In a systematic attempt to obtain a detailed account of the qualifications and activities of the clergy he ordered several unpopular inquiries. This, and the good archbishop’s impressively prominent nose, might be thought more than enough for his peers to have nicknamed him ‘nosy Parker’. The problem with this story is that his peers did no such thing. The phrase ‘nosy parker’ dates from the end of the 19th century. The popular Victorian novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon edited the Belgravia Magazine at that time and ‘nosey parker’ appeared there in the May 1890 edition, which seems to be the first example of the phrase’s use in print: You’re a asking’ too many questions for me, there’s too much of Mr. Nosey Parker about you, an’ I’d ‘ave you to know as I’m a laidee. In the 17th century, ‘nosey’ was just a name for someone with a large nose (although Archbishop Parker appears to have avoided that fate). An early example is in Thomas Shelton’s 1620 translation of Cervantes’ Don Quixote: The Story leaves them, to tell who was the Knight of the Glasses and his nosier Squire.

The word began to be used to mean ‘inquisitive’ from around the start of the 19th century. Robert Montgomery’s satire The Age Reviewed, 1828, includes a reference to it in that context: The scyophantic [sic] gang Whine through the kingdom with deceitful slang; Till nasty, nosy gabble mouth’d for hire, Puff their mean souls into Presumption’s fire. Before ‘nosy parker’ was coined, a ‘parker’ was simply a park-keeper. The opportunities for park-keepers to spy on courting couples were no doubt ample and there has been some speculation - by the lexicographer Eric Partridge and others - that this may be the source of the term. Such spying probably did go on, and it is now such a popular pastime as to have been given a name dogging, but there’s no real evidence of a link between furtive park-keepers and ‘nosy parkers’. Was the first Nosy Parker a real person and, if so, who? We don’t know. What is certain is that the rather hopeful guess that it was Parker the hawk-nosed butler from the 1960s Thunderbirds puppet series can be ruled out. It is much more likely that the expression alludes to overly inquisitive people who ‘stick their noses in’ other people’s business. The same allusion was probably called on with the coining of the more recent and graphic New Zealand/Australian phrase with the same meaning - ‘sticky beak’. Where parker comes into it is anyone’s guess.

Actually blinkers and not glasses as such, the little specs prevent the birds from seeing straight ahead, making direct confrontation with other roosters more difficult as they’re forced to look around the sides and be more cautious. ‘My roosters were always fighting each other - I was losing ten birds a day,’ said Xiaolong. ‘I was inspired by my own glasses and thought if I could just block their view so they can’t see each other directly, they wouldn’t have fights. The British royal family have been firmly in the limelight recently, but their ancestors are now making headlines for grisly reasons, with the revelation that they used to dine on human flesh. According to a new book on medicinal cannibalism, written by University of Durham academic Dr Richard Sugg, well-off and welleducated Brits used to eat human flesh, blood and bones as medicine. This practice apparently took place in other parts of Europe as well up until the end of the 18th century. While referring to the barbarity of cannibals in the New World, royals hypocritically applied, drank or wore powdered Egyptian mummy, as well as human fat, flesh, bone
and even brains. Dr Sugg suggests one cure for nosebleeds used by the upper class was moss taken from the skulls of dead soldiers. The academic, from the university’s English Studies department, argues strongly that the Europeans were the real cannibals of the world. ‘One thing we are rarely taught at school, yet is evidenced in literary and historic texts of the time, is this: James I refused corpse medicine; Charles II made his own corpse medicine; and Charles I was made into corpse medicine,’ he said. Charles II wasn’t the only royal to enjoy a feast of human flesh either; Queen Mary and William III were said to be in on the act too.

Barcelona’s lack of pace in defence might prove to be crucial if United are able to create chances for Hernandez, Rooney or runners from midfield, and if they are able to hold the ball long enough to do so. The big decisions for Ferguson will be who to use in midfield; the experience of Scoles and Giggs (below), or the stamina and speed of Park and Fletcher, whether to play Rooney almost as a fifth midfielder, or up top on his own or with Hernandez.
