HUA HIN THAILAND It was only a matter of time before this subject hit the AWOL front page again, and as disappointed as we are at having to report it once more, we will continue to highlight what most bar owners are calling a scam until this perennial persecution ends. Over the last few weeks, and most notably last weekend, bars in Soi 102 and Khao Takiab have been visited by a group of about five or six Thais, mostly male but with one female also reported; they have been entering bars claiming to be police and attempt to seize equipment such as laptop computers which they say are playing music illegally in the premises. AWOL has had reports from three bars of this, and in two of them large amounts of money were demanded, and paid, for the items to be returned and for the bar, and it’s staff (who feel intimidated by the manner of these raids and the frequent threats that they will go to jail) to be left alone. No warrants or identification are presented, and if they are asked for, as in one case, the scene turns ugly, and one bar owner was assaulted; however he then used reasonable force to eject these unidentified ‘officers’, as was his legal right. This particular raid was also apparently filmed by a security camera. The entry and search of a premises, and the seizure of items from that premises are illegal unless the people carrying out such actions are in possession of a warrant signed by a judge and present it and identification when asked. The way these raids occur have the hallmarks of organised crime, but no one in this community knows who these people are, or what they can do when faced with this situation. While most agree that they should be challenged, when confronted by this mob it is not so easy. AWOL hopes this is the last time we hear of it, but fear it is not. Be warned.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Run rings around To easily outrun or outclass and opponent. ‘Running rings around’ originated as an English hunting term. It was used by fox-hunters but more often by those indulging in hare-coursing, which is now banned in the UK. The circling runs made by the hare in its attempts to outrun the chasing greyhounds were called rings. The first person to refer in print to rings with that meaning was the Member of Parliament for Ipswich, William Churchill, in 1717: “Hunt circling Hares, or wily Foxes chase, Their mazy Rings, and fly Meanders trace.” ‘Running rings’ came a little later. The first example found of the expression in print is in the hunting text Stable Talk and Table Talk, Charles Brindley, 1846: “Was it a bad scenting country, or were foxes scarce?” He said, “Neither: but the foxes were apt to run rings.” ‘Running rings around’ is found later again, in the 1875

Coursing Calendar: Ace-of-Trumps was immensely her superior, making rings round her, and winning all one way. The figurative use of the phrase, which refers to people being outwitted or outclassed rather than outrun, began being used in the late 19th century. Several of these early uses come from Australia and New Zealand. For example, this piece from the New Zealand newspaper The Waikato Times, November 1880: Failing Mr Clark’s acceptance of the invitation to become a candidate [for election as Mayor], there are several other well-known citizens who could “run rings” around Mr Larkins. The alternative form of the expression is ‘run circles around’, which came into being later again, around the turn of the 20th century. This form is entirely disassociated from the source hunting context and was coined in the USA and is still used there, whereas most other English-speaking countries prefer the original ;run rings’ version. An example of it is found in the New York newspaper The Syracuse Standard, July 1897: The speedy Herreshoff flyer... could run circles around any of the craft running between Clayton and the Bay.

Mr Trichan from Chiang Mai in Thailand is a deep fried chicken specialist with a hands on approach that in no way conforms to health and safety regulations. Now I can fry rice, chicken, and many things with just my bare hands. They’ve never seen anything like it before,’ he said. ‘People were coming from all over just to buy my chicken and watch me spoon it out with hands. He has been searching (without success) for sympathy. He has asked repeatedly for a special handicap during his recuperation, so the committee met over many beers in BOB & NOKS and voted to allow it, but he must wear a skirt and play off the ladies tee. He had the operation in India of all places, and to get a visa his long suffering wife had to go as a ‘carer’, which she did very well; last week he asked her to make him a cup of tea to which she replied ‘we are not in India now and the visa ran out weeks ago so make your own’. He has been a member of the society for several years and with his dulcet Scottish tone and songs of yesteryear you would lose him in thick fog. zurich, switzerland The UN has stepped into the crisis at FIFA by backing a resolution to use ‘all necessary measures’ to bring democracy to the world governing body. Security Council Resolution 1982 was passed with a 13-0 vote in favour with only two countries, Russia and Qatar, abstaining. A spokesperson for the UN said, “This is about bringing free and open elections to FIFA. For too long it has been run as a one-party dictatorship with no real choice being offered to the voters. It is absolutely not about regime change.” The chairman of the FA said, “It is absolutely about regime change. The problem is Sepp Blatter and until he’s gone there’s no hope of changing FIFA for the better.” He issued these comments from the standard British UN position of hiding behind the US delegate while shaking his fist angrily. Despite the announcement, it is not yet clear what form these UN measures will take, or when they are to begin. However, it is expected that countries will soon escalate from their current policy of ‘being all nice to Mr. Blatter’s face hoping they’ll get what they want then saying nasty things behind his back when they don’t’.

This all follows the desperate moves made by Blatter this week to restore credibility to both himself and FIFA, by drafting in a ‘council of wisdom’, comprising of Henry Kissinger, Placido Domingo and Johann Cruyff. Apparently Billy The Fish was also approached but declined the offer as he was too busy training with Fulchester United F.C. Plus he said it was all a bit too fishy for his liking. There are two possibilities currently being discussed as to what the next steps are. One is to enforce a ‘nofly privileges’ for FIFA executive members by revoking their gold membership status for all major international airlines. The other is to insist on playing ‘You’ve got to pick a pocket or two’ from the musical Oliver! every time Sepp Blatter walks on stage.
A defiant Mr. Blatter promised to fight on and he released a statement that said, “Sure I’m the only person you can vote for, but if I didn’t stand again you’d have nobody to vote for and that’s not very democratic is it?” Mr. Blatter insisted that nothing should be read into the fact he now wears full military uniform for all public appearances and that giant 100 metre high statues of him that have been erected around Zurich.
