ARMED AND DANGEROUS TEENAGE BIKER GANGS ATTACK

ROAD USERS ON HUA HIN STREETS

HUA HIN THAILAND The menace of teenage gangs racing around Hua Hin on souped up motorbikes carrying a variety of weapons has once again reared its very ugly head. Reports have been coming in of incidents which have resulted in injury and serious damage to vehicles. The gangs’ modus operandi appears to be to congregate late at night or in the very early morning to use public roads as their own dangerous playground, and anyone who dares to try and use the road they are on is in danger of being chased and attacked. They block the entire road, weaving and racing alternately, which forces any unfortunate car or other road user to either take a diversion or run their gauntlet. Up to forty or fifty bikes can be involved, often with two or three of the wannabe hoodlums on each. There are strong suspicions that many of them are hyped up on ‘ya ba’ or similar amphetamine based drugs. There is clear evidence that they carry wooden clubs, machetes, slingshots (with large marbles) and guns, possibly home made. The police are aware of their presence but are in an invidious position, as it appears that these young thugs may be from rich and powerful families who will make the job of investigation, prosecution and appropriate punishment of the guilty parties virtually impossible. Incidents similar to this were occuring a couple of years ago but were stopped by the police, so it must be hoped they can do so again. Incidents have occurred on the Canal Road, Chomsin Road and Petchkasem Road, and if they continue unabated we are sure to see death on the streets as a result. We hope that if it is any of these biker brats, it is seen for what it is, as being a result of their own actions and not any poor unfortunate law abiding driver who was trying to pass them. If you have had any encounters with these louts, please email AWOL on info@awolonline.net with the details.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Say cheese A photographer’s instruction just before taking a picture, in order to make people smile. ‘Say cheese!’ must have been said to people posing for photographs as often as ‘watch the birdie!’. Articulating a long ‘e’ sound requires us to draw back our lips and bare our teeth in a grimace, which is the obvious reason for photographers using it. The question is though - why cheese and not some other word? (and, come to that, why birdie? - but more on that later). Despite exhaustive etymological delving, no one has found any literal link between ‘say cheese’ and the meaning of the word cheese. Some have suggested that it relates to the now rather archaic term ‘cheese it’, meaning ‘run away’. That’s pure speculation and in any case; why would a photographer just about to take someone’s picture encourage them to run away? ‘Cheese’ was probably chosen because both the ‘ch’ and ‘ee’ sounds require a baring of the teeth, but then, so other words, like ‘each’ and ‘seas’. Of course, nonEnglish speaking cultures also take photographs and have their own versions. In Mexico and Argentina, they say ‘whisky’ and in France, ‘dit souris’ (‘say mouse’). The term was probably coined impromptu by a photographer and we aren’t ever likely to find out who that was. We do have a pointer to who first popularised the use the word when having a photograph taken. The earliest printed records of the expression are from the 1940s, in particular, this piece from the Texas newspaper The Big Spring Daily Herald, October 1943, titled Need To Put On A Smile? Here’s How: Say ‘Cheese’: Now here’s something worth knowing. It’s a formula for smiling when you have your picture taken. It comes from former

Ambassador Joseph E. Davies and is guaranteed to make you look pleasant no matter what you’re thinking. Mr. Davies disclosed the formula while having his own picture taken on the set of his “Mission to Moscow.” It’s simple. Just say “Cheese,” It’s an automatic smile. “I learned that from a politician,” Mr. Davies chuckled. “An astute politician, a very great politician. But, of course, I cannot tell you who he was...” Ambassador Davies looked every inch the politician who took his own advice. His coy ‘I cannot tell you who it was’ was no doubt delivered with a wink, as Davies served under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who fits his description perfectly well, as listeners in 1940s America would have been well aware. The fact that the newspaper report presented Davies’ recipe as a novelty that its readers would previously be unfamiliar with does suggest that the phrase can’t be much earlier than 1943 in origin. It’s also reasonable to speculate that it was Roosevelt introduced the phrase into the language. Photographers these days often prefer to use ‘Say, one, two, three’, as it produces the same grins and makes sure that all the sitters smile at the same time. While it appears that virtually any ‘long e’ word could have been chosen instead, ‘cheese’ has stood the test of time and resulted in a new adjective - ‘cheesy’. People began to speak of ‘cheesy grins’ or ‘cheesy smiles’. The word ‘cheesy’, meaning ‘vulgar’/’tasteless’, derives from the perceived insincerity of cheesy grins. As for ‘watch the birdie’, this now outdated instruction, usually given to children to get them to face in the right direction for a photographic portrait, unlike ‘say cheese’, did refer to an actual object. The ‘birdies’ were animated props that could be made to squawk or warble and so attract a child’s attention. 7

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM AVIATORS Flying is a hard way to earn an easy living.

Motorbikes for Rent

If helicopters are so safe, how come there are no vintage helicopter flypasts? Real planes use only a single stick to fly. This is why bulldozers & helicopters -- in that order -- need two. There are only three things the copilot should ever say: 1. Nice landing, Sir. 2. I’ll buy the first round. 3. I’ll take the fat one.

As a pilot only two bad things can happen to you and one of them will. a. One day you will walk out to the aircraft knowing that it is your last flight. b. One day you will walk out to the aircraft not knowing that it is your last flight. There are Rules and there are Laws. The Rules are made by men who think that they know better how to fly your airplane than you. Laws (of Physics) were ordained by nature. You can, and sometimes should, suspend the Rules but you can never suspend the Laws. The ideal pilot is the perfect blend of discipline and aggressiveness.

The medical profession is the natural enemy of the aviation profession.. Ever notice that the only experts who decree that the age of the pilot is over are people who have never flown anything? Also, in spite of the intensity of their feelings that the pilot’s day is over I know of no expert who has volunteered to be a passenger in a non-piloted aircraft. It’s not that all airplane pilots are good-looking. Just that good-looking people seem more capable of flying airplanes. An old pilot is one who can remember when flying was dangerous and sex was safe. The scientific theory I like best is that the rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost airline baggage.. You define a good flight by negatives: you didn’t get hijacked, you didn’t crash, you didn’t throw up, you weren’t late, you weren’t nauseated by the food. So you’re grateful. The FAA Motto: We’re not happy till you’re not happy.

CATCH THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY WITH

JARNOLTOWKA, POLAND Drunk bareback ‘Romeo’ facing jail for riding horse into house to impress girl You’re out drinking with friends, trying to hatch a clever plan to impress a girl. What do you decide? Strip off and ride your horse into her front room of course. Lovestruck Pole Jan Rudnicki, 40, came up with his fool-proof idea while in a bar in the town of Jarnoltowka while chatting to friends about the best way to impress eligible divorcee Gosia Domoslawska, 36. Friends said when Jan first suggested his bizarre plot they thought he was joking. ‘But then he went outside, climbed onto this horse - which he’d ridden to the pub - and set off barebreasted and bare-backed,’ Mirek

Nowak explained. The next thing we knew, he’d been arrested.’ Gosia called the police - and called him ‘a loon’ - after he’d ripped off her front door. ‘I was at home watching TV with my daughter when I heard this deafening crash and suddenly this half-naked man on a horse appeared in my front room,’ she said. ‘I never fancied him before and I certainly don’t now. If this was supposed to win my heart he must be seriously off his rocker.’ The dad-of-seven has since apologised and offered to repair the damage. BARGTHHEIDE, GERMANY How did that get there? Car wedged in van to avoid trailer costs Police who stopped a white van veering from side to side on a busy

road were somewhat surprised when they opened the back doors of the vehicle to find a car wedged in on its side. The white van men from Kazakhstan decided to save on trailer costs after snapping up a silver Mazda 626 that they wanted to ship back home. When the car didn’t fit in the van the right way up - the two men called a few pals and loaded it in on its side on top of a mattress. But the trip back home for Konstanty Krol, 38, and Cezar Chmielewski, 28, ended when police stopped the heavily laden van after seeing it lurching all over the road. A police spokesman said the vehicles were confiscated and the men ordered to return with a proper transporter for the car before they would be allowed to continue the journey.

THE MURRAY MOUND EXPERIENCE ANDY MURRAY TO WATCH WIMBLEDON FINAL IN 3D

WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND The BBC will show the finals at this year’s Wimbledon Championships live in 3D, giving Andy Murray the opportunity to feel like he is actually there. The matches will be shown in a freeto-air broadcast and will be available to Andy Murray and other viewers if they have access to a 3D TV and HD channels, and do not consider the experience too painful. Danielle Nagler, head of BBC 3D said, “We wanted to give Andy a more realistic way of experiencing all the drama. It looked like he may have had a chance of reaching the final this year, but Roger Federer’s return to form has given him a bit of a wake-up-call and this is our way of softening the blow.” “So Britain’s number one will now be able to watch the player that beats him in the semi-final lining

The giant screen outside Wimbledon showing the view Murray can expect

up against the player that would’ve beaten him in the other semi-final – all in glorious 3D.” Experts have said the technological development will see a male British tennis player feel like he is actually in the final for the first time in 75 years.

London Bar AND GUESTHOUSE

“There has never been a more exciting time to be a British tennis player with a 3D television.” Said Lawn Tennis Associate spokeswoman Laura Williams. “In many ways, the experience will be even better than playing in it. You’ll be cooler, will have drinks on hand, and can switch over to see if there’s anything good on the other side whenever you feel like it.” Fans of the Scotsman and other masochists have been assured that all of Andy Murray’s matches, including his semi-final defeat, will still be screened in 2D.
