an end to conflict? early signs that election result will be respected, but can it last?
HUA HIN THAILAND The size of the victory for the Phue Thai party in Sunday’s General Election has, for the time being, muted any pre-vote thoughts of another coup or mass demonstrations by the opposition. For the record, the current seat count between the two main parties is 265 to Phue Thai and 159 to the Democrats, with the only apparent problems coming for the third placed party BhumjaiThai, with investigations being carried out into some alleged electoral frauds. In Prachuap Kiri Khan the Democrats were dominant as expected, although detailed results have not been made available for individual towns or areas yet, only general provincial results. The announcements made so far by the Prime Minister in waiting, Yingluck Shinawatra, seem to indicate that an early and potentially provocative return to Thailand by her brother Thaksin is not likely to happen, and the acceptance of the poll result by both the army and the Democrats, without the anatagonistic and defiant words that has been characteristic in recent years, all seems to signal some form of reconciliation, with very few people wanting a repeat of the troubles of the last few years. This is all good news for Thailand, regardless of how the policies of the new government are implemented; business experts seem to think these policies will weaken the baht because of the finances that will be required, and if that is the case it will be a boost to the tourist industry, exporters and, of course, expats. If the positive mood prevails, this will be a huge benefit to Hua Hin, and we can look forward to the next high season with some optimism. It is, however, still a very big ‘if’, but so far, so good.
