bubbling under major new retail projects point to the start of a boom period
HUA HIN THAILAND Since AWOL was launched in 2008 we have regularly run stories on new business and other planned developments in the area; some of these have never materialised but even through a difficult business climate, Hua Hin has seen a remarkable growth in new shopping, accommodation and other projects springing up. Recently this development has accelerated, and in the year ahead we are going to see several landmark retail developments being completed. The first of these is likely to be the new Makro store currently under construction in the Soi 4 area - no confirmed opening date but reports suggest it could be open as early as October this year. A Tesco/Lotus superstore is also under construction on the west side of the Phetkasem Road on the way to Cha Am, roughly opposite the Regent Beach Holiday Inn, and shouldn’t be far behind. Also north of the town, just past the Palm Hills Golf Course, is a project called ‘The Venezia’, which will cover an area of 46 rai (73,600 square metres). This will be a Venice-themed indoor and outdoor shopping mall, restaurant and leisure facilities venue complete with gondolas, bridges and canals, and is scheduled to open in July 2012. Works are being carried out all around the town in addition to these, with a rumoured Big C opening to the west on the bypass, several developments under the Geeuntung family banner, including a large hotel on Soi 94 and several retail projects, a water park, wakeboard facility and a small sailing lake at the Black Mountain Golf Club, and recently completed the Best Western ‘Serenity’ hotel almost opposite Soi 6. The pace of change may be worrying for some, but seems to be heralding the start of a new boom for the town, for better or worse. It can only be hoped that it also brings prosperity to the local people who really need it.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Fiddlesticks This week we have a reader’s request for the phrase ‘fiddle sticks’, (thank you Guy) which he recalls being used by his mother when kids were not telling the truth. In this usage, the meaning is ‘nonsense’ but it is not completely clear how it came to be used in this manner. Other uses of the phrase are also as a cry of frustration - ‘Oh, Fiddle Sticks!’ possibly substituting it for a more vulgar word, while the original meaning is quite simply a violin (or fiddle) bow, which leads nicely into one of the theories concerning the use of the phrase as meaning nonsense. According to The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, originally by Francis Grose., Fiddlestick’s End meant “Nothing; the end of the ancient fiddlesticks ending in a point; hence metaphorically used to express a thing terminating in nothing.” It is not too much of a stretch to move from a meaning of nothing to meaning nonsense, but there are earlier references that suggest another origin. Another theory is yet another seafaring one; that fiddlesticks came from the wooden bars that stopped crockery sliding off tables on ships in rough weather. Apparently, at least according to some tour guides, officers used to play silly games with them, hence the name. This is another of those inventive stories, although there’s an ounce of truth in it because the protective slats, bars or rails around the edges of shipboard tables are indeed called fiddles. There is a link between the violin bow and ship’s table senses of fiddle, in that the word has been used in several fields for various wooden contrivances with a more or less fanciful resemblance to a violin and that this is the source of the ship usage.
But otherwise, ship’s fiddles and fiddlesticks are unconnected. A fiddlestick was undoubtedly at first a violin bow. (Both fiddle and violin come from the Roman goddess of joy, Vitula, who gave her name to a stringed instrument; fiddle came down to us via the Germanic languages, violin through the Romance ones.) Fiddlestick is recorded from the fifteenth century, and Shakespeare used a proverb based on it in Henry IV: “the devil rides on a fiddle-stick”, meaning that a commotion has broken out; the imagery is obviously related to the broomstick of a witch, and perhaps there’s some thought behind it of the noise that a fiddle might make if the devil got to play it. At some point in Shakespeare’s lifetime, it seems fiddlestick began to be used for something insignificant or trivial. This may have been because a violin bow was regarded as inconsequential or perhaps simply because the word sounds intrinsically silly. It took on a humorous slant as a word one could use to replace another in a contemptuous response to a remark. George Farquhar used it in this way in his play Sir Henry Wildair of 1701: “Golden pleasures! golden fiddlesticks!”. From here it was a short step to using the word as a disparaging comment to mean that something just said was nonsense. Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Sisters doing it for themselves susanna and donna - the new kids on the block
HUA HIN THAILAND Two new eating and drinking venues have recently appeared in the town, as Susanna Restaurant and Bar Donna, named after the daughters of the owners, opened at the Peony Hotel on Naresdamri Road, fifty metres south of the main Sofitel entrance. It is in fact the second Susanna Restaurant, with the first being the well established and popular location at the top end of the Night Market, thirty metres down from the railway. The new restaurant will be serving the same delicious menu, described by Sipi (pictured right, centre, with his wife and head chef, Porn, left, and Mai Thai boat partner Lars, right), as a ‘globetrotting selection’ taken from places they have visited on their travels. The fourth partner in the business is Pertsa, currently out of the country. One unique example that has been hugely popular at their existing restaurant is the Lapland style fish fillet with butter, but the menu offers food from eleven different countries, and the menu comes in five languages - English, Finnish, Swedish, German and, of course, Thai. Porn has thirty years of experience as a chef, with over half of that spent in Europe. Bar Donna is effectively the lobby bar for the Peony Hotel, and as well as the wide range of drinks you would expect, also has a pool table and dartboard with comfortable seating and a relaxed atmosphere. The bar and restaurant also serve as pick up and drop off points for boat trips on the recently acquired (by Lars with partners Sipi and Tero) and renovated sixty foot teak boat the Mai Thai. This offers daily day and dinner cruises, day and night fishing trips and is available for private charter. It can cater for up to twenty people and all trips include free transportation,a free ‘sea lunch’ and visits to places such as Dolphin Bay and Monkey Island. There is a sun deck with comfortable sun chairs, a bar that is always open and a superb music system with over 2000 songs from the sixties on. Meppen, Germany Runaway horse caught on speed camera in Germany A mode of transport flying through a speed restriction and getting snapped by an enforcement camera is nothing new - although it’s not every day that mode of transport is one from the 19th century (i.e. a horse). Normally reserved for catching motorists haring along in their cars, this speed camera turned up an interesting result for police in Meppen, Germany, when they examined their evidence at the end of the day. The runaway nag had bolted from a nearby paddock and found his way onto the main road of the Lower Saxony town, dashing through traffic as drivers tried their best to

get out of the way. The horse was eventually accosted - but only after 20 minutes of freedom, and setting off the speed camera. A police spokesman said: ‘The horse was galloping at full speed for several kilometers before it copuld be stopped, caught and led back home. The image was taken by a camera set to take pictures of speeding motorists and people
going over the red light. It was actually a car driver that triggered the picture and the horse ended up being snapped in the same picture.’ The officer added that the driver who skipped the traffic signals had lodged an official complaint against the fine - saying he was distracted by the galloping gelding. ‘He claimed he was trying to get out of the way of a runaway horse,’ the spokesman added. ‘At least we know that part is true.’ A broken fence was cited as the cause of the escape. It has since been repaired.

The Croatian international says Daniel Levy had an agreement that should an offer from a bigger club come in for him he would be allowed to break his own agreement – an agreement which Levy has broken.
