down with dengue health ministry issues seasonal warning and urges precautions
HUA HIN THAILAND This week the Thai Public Health Ministry has issued warnings regarding dengue fever, the mosquito borne disease. According to their records, between January and June this year some 23,324 people have become infected with the dengue virus. Of this number, 13 have died. Elderly people and children aged under one year old are most at risk of dengue fever infection, the ministry’s permanent secretary Dr Paijit Warachit said this week. “People who have a high fever, fatigue, stomach ache, vomiting and no interest in food should undergo treatment,” Paijit said. “We found that over 80 percent of mortality from dengue fever occurs during July and August, which is the peak season for this disease,” he added. The continued seasonal rainfall this year has increased the number of mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus that causes Dengue Haemorrhagic fever. Dengue is caused by Aedes Aegypti, a common household mosquito, which is active at all times, not just sunrise and sunset as malaria carrying mosquitos are. In 2010 the ministry also issued warnings, including a reminder that mosquitoes are attracted to dark clothing; the figures this year so far are better than 2010, which in a similar period saw 43 deaths and more than 45,000 cases of dengue, and for the whole year there were over 115,000 reported cases of dengue and 141 reported deaths. However people are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid this nasty virus. Hua Hin is not a high risk area but there have been outbreaks here before; tourists are probably less at risk than expats and residents, as the former will normally follow the advice given.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Cut to the chase Get to the point - leaving out unnecessary preamble. This phrase originated in the US film industry. Many early silent films ended in chase sequences preceded by obligatory romantic storylines. The first reference to it dates back to that era, just after the first ‘talkie’ - The Jazz Singer, 1927. It is a script direction from Joseph Patrick McEvoy’s novel Hollywood Girl, 1929: “Jannings escapes... Cut to chase.” There’s quite a distance from a single citation in a script direction to a phrase that is part of the language. It doesn’t appear again in print for some years and we can be fairly sure that McEvoy wasn’t the source of the figurative use of the phrase as we now know it. That figurative use, i.e. the generalized ‘get to the point’ meaning emerged in the 1940s. The Winnipeg Free Press, March 1944 ran an article about screen writing that included this: Miss [Helen] Deutsch has another motto, which had to do with the writing of cinematic drama. It also is on the wall where she cant miss seeing it, and it says: “When in doubt, cut to the chase.” That does imply getting to the point but isn’t quite the current meaning as it relates specifically to film chases. The more general usage comes soon afterwards, for example, in this piece from the New England newspaper The Berkshire Evening Eagle, February 1947: “Let’s cut to the chase. There will be no tax relief this year.” The precept as it applies to films is as prevalent now as it was in the silent film days. Many, in fact it is not too strong to say most, films aimed at a young male audience involve plot devices that allow for car/boat/spacecraft chases. There is usually a token love interest storyline
before everything in sight ends up in pieces. There is a similar phrase ‘cut to Hecuba’, which is reported by Michael Warwick in ‘Theatrical Jargon of the Old Days’, a piece in an October 1968 edition of Stage. Warwick explains the phrase as a “relic from Shakespeare and was an artifice employed by many old producers to shorten matinees by cutting out long speeches”. The allusion is to a speech in which Hamlet refers to Hecuba, which appears late on in Act 2 of Shakespeare’s play. The need for such a phrase is evident, as Shakespeare apparently produced several versions of Hamlet, some of which would have taken more than five hours to perform and which were seemingly intended for private reading rather than performance. A need to ‘cut to Hecuba’, in order to get to the end in a timely fashion seems reasonable. Warwick doesn’t include any evidence to prove the existence of the phrase prior to 1968 though and it is hardly a part of everyday language I can find no citation of it in print other than in Warwick’s article. There’s also nothing to link ‘cut to Hecuba’ with ‘cut to the chase’. It is quite possible, indeed likely, that the two phrases were coined independently.

the bells...the bells After Quasimodo’s death, the bishop of the Cathedral of Notre Dame sent word through the streets of Paris that a new bell ringer was needed. The bishop decided that he would conduct the interviews personally and went up into the belfry to begin the screening process. After observing several applicants demonstrate their skills, he had decided to call it a day. Just then, an armless man approached him and announced that he was there to apply for the bell ringer’s job. The bishop was incredulous. ‘You have no arms !’ ‘No matter,’ said the man. ‘Observe !’ And he began striking the bells with his face, producing a beautiful melody on the carillon. The bishop listened in astonishment; convinced he had finally found a replacement for Quasimodo. But suddenly, as he rushed forward to strike the bell, the armless man tripped and plunged headlong out of the belfry window to his death in the street below.

Two monks, hearing the bishop’s cries of grief at this second tragedy, rushed up the stairs to his side. ‘What has happened ? Upcoming Phra Lor Recital at Vic Hua Hin, Saturday, 30th July 2011, 7.30 pm Phra Lor is a famous Thai Epic, a love story of three lovers all written in poetry by one of the kings in Ayudhya period. Shaoyang City, china Chinese beekeeper triumphs in ‘bee-bearding’ competition A beekeeper from China’s Hunan Province has triumphed in an unusual competition to see who could wear the most bees on their body. Wang Dalin, 42, went head-tohead with fellow bee enthusiast Lu Kongjiang in the challenge, which took place in the province’s Shaoyang City on Sunday. Both Wang and Lu, 20 - dressed in just a pair of shorts and facial protection including goggles and nose-plugs - stood on a set of scales for an hour while using queen bees to attract swarms of the insects to their bodies. And after the 60 minutes were up Wang was declared the winner,

having attracted an impressive 26.86kg worth of bees - compared to Lu, who could only manage just under 23kg. But despite their efforts, neither managed to break the world record for the most number of bees ‘worn’ at any one time. That honour belongs to American
animal trainer Mark Biancaniello, who attracted 39.5kg worth of bees on to his body in 1998. Bee-bearding was invented in Russia in the 1830s and was originally confined to attracting bees to one’s face, using a queen bee in a strategically placed cage. However more recently the practice has extended to covering the entire body in bees, as it provides more room for a greater number of the insects to land. Other notable ‘bee-bearders’ include Chinese couple Li Wenhua and Yan Hongxia, both of whom were covered in bees for their wedding ceremony in 2009.

BALL IN HAND POOL SEASON PRESENTATION The third season of the Ball in Hand Pool league finished in style last week. Hosted brilliantly by John and Tan at Play Sports Bar in Soi Salawat, everybody had a great time and fantastic food. 9 trophies were awarded by ‘The Hurdy Gurdy Man’ James Purdy (Sunset Boulevard), noted for his dancing rather than his pool abilities! He presented Stevie ‘The sportsman’ Bailey who plays for Hua Hin in every sport but lowers himself to play for Sunset Boulevard Bar on a Wednesday in the pool league. He beat Simon ‘The Pieman’ from Talk of the Town in a thrilling battle for third place in the 9 ball singles tournament. In the final of that tournament, Hendrick ‘the handsome’ from Dolphin (playing for Talk of The Town) bar won the title after beating Elvis look-alike, Gon from the Lord Webb bar. In the 8 ball singles Tamm (The Thai Tiger) beat Bernie (The Bolt) in a tense final at Oasis Bar contested by two previous winners. Deano (Oasis Bar) took third place with a win over Nu from Thaiwaii. The reigning champions, Eagle Bar, took both the Cup Winners Trophy and League Champion Title for the second successive season. For the coming 2011 - 2012 football season we have decided to make a few changes on the Football News page; we will not be reproducing the Premier League table every week, and the AWOL preview for each match is also being shown the door. Instead we will feature the fixtures for each coming week for the English and Scottish Premier Leagues plus the English Championship, with kick off times adjusted for Thailand and predictions of the outcomes. A new addition will be ‘AWOL’s Featured Game’ which will be chosen from the entire list of fixtures for that coming week, and not necessarily the fixtures printed in AWOL, so could be an international match, Champion’s League or Europa League game or one from any league or cup across the globe. Premier League Fantasy Football will be returning, but we will not be regularly featuring I Know The Score in the paper this time; however it will be available on the AWOL forum, along with a new Championship Fantasy League. Both of these will get updated in the paper at strategic points during the season. Featured Game World Cup Qualifying Asia Saturday, 23 July 2011 Thailand v Palestine, 18:00 Venue: I-mobile Stadium (Buriram) and THURSDAY 28TH JULY 2011 Palestine v Thailand, 22:00 Venue: Faisal Al-Husseini International Stadium (Al-Ram) Last 5 games: Thailand DWLDD Palestine DWWDW Coaches: Thailand: Winfried “Winnie” Schäfer Palestine: Mousa Bezaz This two legged knock out game will decide which of these two advances to the group stages of the AFC World Cup Qualifying. Palestine beat Afghanistan 3-1 on aggregate (2-0 home, 1-1 away) in the first round. Thailand received a bye to this stage. There is a little recent history between these two teams, as they played each other in March this year in a two legged qualifier for the 2012 Olympics; both legs ended 1-0 to the home side, (with the game in Palestine the first ever competitve game in the country) and Thailand went on to win 6-5 on penalties. However, Thailand was ordered to forfeit the first match because of fielding an ineligible player, thus Palestine advanced, only to lose to Bahrain in the next stage. On paper Thailand are favourites as the higher ranked FIFA team (120 against 170), but the games earlier in the year give the lie to that. The games are likely to be very close, and Thailand will want to make the most of the first home game, and it would be a disaster for them if they do not get to the group stages. Spare a thought for the Palestinians though, who face huge problems in even attending fixtures several times in recent years Israel has denied exit visas to squad members, and several of their players have been killed as a direct result of the conflict.

FANTASY FOOTBALL As we have done for the last two Premier League seasons, AWOL will once again be running a private league for AWOL readers to compete against each other. At present the online game is not yet running so watch this space! In addition to this, we are introducing another game dedicated to the n-power Championship, although this one will not be featured in the paper every week, but more on the AWOL Forum.
