GET IN THE HOLE! HUA HIN GOLF FESTIVAL 2011 TEES OFF
HUA HIN THAILAND For the tenth year running, golfers in Hua Hin are being offered the chance to play some of the areas superb courses for a flat rate green fee of 800 baht. The courses participating this year are the Banyan, Royal Hua Hin, Palm Hills, Eagle Milford, Majestic Creek, Kaeng Krachan, Imperial lake View, Springfield, Sawang and the Royal Thai Army Sports Center Suan Son Pradipat Golf Course (Sea Pines). The festival runs throughout August and September, and there are special tournaments also taking place on five weekends throughout the festival; 6-7 August (Eagle Milford and Sea Pines), 20-21 August (Palm Hills and Imperial Lake View), 27-28 August (Banyan and Majestic Creek), 3-4 September (Sawang and Kaeng Krachan) and 10-11 September (Royal Hua Hin and Springfield). Entry fee for each tournament is 2500 baht (except for Sawang and Kaeng Krachan which are 2000 baht) and this includes green fee, caddy, dinner and rewards. Special room rates are available at a number of hotels in the area, and more details can be obtained from TAT Phetchaburi on 03247 1005-6 (E-mail : tatphet@tat.or.th) and TAT Prachuap Khiri Khan 03251 3885 (E-mail : tatprachuap@tat.or.th). There has been some criticism by local expat golfers recently of how they are treated by some of the golf courses, with regard to dual pricing, tee time booking for members and a lack of foresight by the courses to attract them to play with special offers other than the annual festival. Some estimates put the expat golfing fraternity at around the 1500 mark, but many people simply can’t afford to play as often as they would like, if at all, and during low season courses are often quite empty. This has been particularly noticeable with the Thai baht being so strong, while green fees have doubled in recent years at many courses. Maybe the golf festival should be expanded to run throughout the low season?

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Mumbo jumbo Nonsense, especially meaningless speech and often associated with spurious religious ritual. There might be thought to be more than a hint of racial stereotyping in use of this phrase today. The casually racist belief in the gullibility of the supposedly childlike ‘fuzzy-wuzzies’ was widespread when this term was coined, and it hasn’t shaken that off. The phrase probably originated from the Mandingo name Maamajomboo, which was a masked dancer that took part in religious ceremonies. In the 18th century Mumbo-jumbo referred to a West African god. Francis Moore, in his 1738 work Travels into the inland parts of Africa noted: “The women are kept in the greatest subjection; and the men, to render their power as compleat as possible, influence their wives to give them an unlimited obedience, by all the force of fear and terror. For this purpose the Mundingoes have a kind of image eight or nine feet high, made of the bark of trees, dressed in a long coat, and crowned with a whisp of straw. This is called a Mumbo Jumbo; and whenever the men have any dispute with the women, this is sent for to determine the contest, which is almost always done in favour of the men. One who is in the secret, conceals himself under the coat, and bringing in the image, is the oracle on these occasions. No one is allowed to come armed into his presence. When the women hear him coming, they run away and hide themselves; but if you are acquainted with the person concealed in the Mumbo Jumbo, he will send them all to come, make them sit down, and afterward either sing or dance, as he pleases; and if any refuse to come, he will send
for, and whip them. Whenever any one enters into this society, they swear in the most solemn manner never to divulge the secret to any woman, or to any person that is not entered into it: and to preserve the secret inviolable, no boys are admitted under 16 years of age. The people also swear by the Mumbo Jumbo; and the oath is esteemed irrevocable. There are very few towns of any note that have not one of these objects of terror, to frighten the poor women into obedience.” That seems like a nice trick if you can do it and it isn’t much of a surprise that the phrase migrated in meaning to mean nonsense and meaningless speech. In the same book Moore anticipated the eventual nonsense meaning of the term by defining it like this: “A cant language... call’d Mumbo-Jumbo.” It wasn’t until a century or so later that it began to be used generally to mean nonsense though. In 1858, The Saturday Review published this: “The old Mumbo Jumbo of ‘unchristianizing the Legislature’ must not be consigned to the eternal limbo... without a parting exsufflation.” Note: exsufflation isn’t a word one sees every day. With the aid of a dictionary it means ‘discharge of air’.

DIARIES (thanks to Grahame) Wife’s Diary: Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn’t flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn’t say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, ‘Nothing.’ I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn’t upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can’t explain his behaviour I don’t know why he didn’t say, ‘I love you, too.’ When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was

UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS Overvecht station in Utrecht installs kids’ slide to help busy passengers Dutch train passengers using Overvecht railway station can expect a quicker than normal journey after having a ‘transfer accelerator’ installed - otherwise known as a big children’s slide. Grown men have been spotted smiling gleefully as they travel down it and mature women can be seen laughing like school girls as they descend. The added feature is probably more suited to a water park or a kid’s playground but that hasn’t stopped Utrecht-based firm HIK Ontwerpers from adding it to the renovation of the Overvecht railway station. The designers explained the slide is a gift to the rail commuters and hope
it will create a playful urban area that could generate positive energy in a disadvantaged neighborhood. It is yet to be seen if a queue will form during rush hour, which ironically enough - would mean the journey may take longer. SHAOYANG, CHINA Bus driver unaware his vehicle had no back wheels A Chinese bus driver who was pushing his pink pride and joy to the limit during peak hour traffic didn’t even realise the rear wheels had rolled away. Thinking that it was just a pot hole that had damaged the buses suspension, 48-year-old driver Shi Shao continued puttering along until worried passengers rang the bell and notified him that the entire
back end was scraping along the ground. With sparks flying from the undercarriage Mr Shi immediately stopped in the middle of a busy road to wait for a tow truck. However, as a result the bus brought rush hour traffic in the city of Shaoyang to a standstill. When police arrived at the scene naturally they couldn’t believe their eyes and found the two detached wheels a considerable distance behind the brightly coloured bus. Luckily no one was hurt in the accident, but there may have been some pride lost by the driver and the mechanics located back at the depot. It hasn’t yet been confirmed, but there are local reports suggesting the wheels were successfully re-attached with extra sticky sticky-tape.

For the coming 2011 - 2012 football season we have decided to make a few changes on the Football News page; we will not be reproducing the Premier League table every week, and the AWOL preview for each match is also being shown the door. Instead we will feature the fixtures for each coming week for the English and Scottish Premier Leagues plus the English Championship, with kick off times adjusted for Thailand and predictions of the outcomes. A new addition will be ‘AWOL’s Featured Game’ which will be chosen from the entire list of fixtures for that coming week, and not necessarily the fixtures printed in AWOL, so could be an international match, Champion’s League or Europa League game or one from any league or cup across the globe. Premier League Fantasy Football will be returning, but we will not be regularly featuring I Know The Score in the paper this time; however it will be available on the AWOL forum, along with a new Championship Fantasy League. Rangers were sluggish at the start of the first leg and cannot afford to play the same way if they want anything out of the tie. It will be a massive disappointment to both the fans and the club if Rangers once again fail to reach the group stages of the Champions League, Malmo, on the other hand, have never got past the qualifying rounds, so this would be a huge achievement and a big moneyspinner if they can hold on to their advantage.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND Manchester City have agreed to let centre-forward Carlos Tevez return to the wild, admitting that their attempt to domesticate him has been a ‘complete failure’. The signing of Tevez was seen a something of a risk by many observers, with some fans groups suggesting that tethering such a magnificent beast for their weekly entertainment was ‘cruel’. Fan Michael Gallagher told us, “Creatures like Carlos Tevez don’t belong in mansions in quiet Cheshire villages, having their natural urges tamed by club officials.” “They belong in the wild, foraging for food, and being the subject of scary stories that we use to scare our children into behaving.” “The club will tell you that they’ve taught him valuable life skills, and phrases such as ‘get ball’ and ‘score
goal’, but that will just make it harder for him to reintegrate back in the wild.” The Tevez experiment is likely to see Manchester City return to purchasing only tame or housebroken creatures from this point forward. A club official told us, “We want a player who can excite the fans, knows where the goal is, but also doesn’t look like they’d bite the head off a chicken if you left them alone with one.” “It would be an added bonus if they know how to use a western toilet.
