A DOG’S LIFE TEMPLE DOGS SAVAGELY ATTACKED
pranburi, THAILAND Stray dogs in Thailand are a problem that won’t go away, but many Thais and foreigners attempt to try and deal with them in many ways such as adoption. More often than not though, unwanted or stray dogs end up being looked after by monks or nuns at nearby temples, often with donations or assistance from local residents or charities. This in itself does not solve the problem, as it can cause tensions with people living close to where the dogs are kept because of noise, smell and cleanliness, as well as encouraging a lax attitude as regards the responsibility everyone has when they take a dog as a pet; some will discard the dog when it becomes an inconvenience to them with the knowledge that the local temple will take care of it. This has been brought into stark reality by reports from the Wat Huay Saleng Pan temple outside Pranburi, where a nun takes care of the dogs left there. There is no money available to her to construct a fenced in compound, both to keep the dogs from straying and to protect them, which has become a necessity recently as someone in or near the temple has been savagely beating the dogs, including puppies, to such an extent that they have required emergency treatment. The latest, a tiny puppy, had to be rushed to the Kassetsart Veterinary Training College where it was found to have had it’s insides ruptured by a vicious beating, while two other dogs have swollen legs so painful they cannot walk. The head monk at the temple is said to have been unhappy about the situation with the loose dogs for some time, and the nun looking after them is distraught at the violence being inflicted on them. A local group of dog lovers is now involved in trying to raise the funds needed to construct a compound, as well as trying to identify and report the person or people behind the senseless attacks on the dogs to the relevant authorities. If anyone would like to donate anything; money, materials, time or anything to assist this situation please contact AWOL on info@awolonline.net and we will pass on your details to the group in question.
