HUA HIN, THAILAND Few can have escaped the news of riots and looting on the streets of UK cities and towns this week, but thankfully most of you reading this (with the honourable exception of our dedicated online readers) have already escaped the problems that are cropping up all over the rest of the world, and will be able to enjoy a riot of your own with the events and activities ongoing or coming soon to Hua Hin. Currently there is the Golf Festival of course, in it’s tenth year with ten courses offering 800 baht green fees until the end of September; also celebrating it’s tenth anniversary is the King’s Cup Elephant Polo which celebrates a decade by returning to Hua Hin after a three year hiatus in Chiang Rai, and this is taking place at the Anantara Resort from Monday 4th to Monday 11th September; with a 3,000-seat stadium being built and the games free of charge for everyone, this year’s event promises to be the biggest ever. Squeezed in between these two in the last weekend of August (Friday 26th and Saturday 27th) we have the world renowned Hua Hin Jazz Festival bringing ‘Jazz On The Beach’ also for the tenth time, although for the first time in August. Planning for this year’s event has been disrupted by a number of things, not least the Thai General Election, but thousands will flock to the town to soak up the sun, sea, sand and sax. MURDERER OF ALLEN QUICKE SENTENCED
PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, THAILAND Allen Quicke was the editor in chief of Asia Times Online and was brutally murdered a year ago. On 9th August 2011 it was announced by the Prachuap Khiri Khan Court that the accused, Mr Ake-pot Kaewpeng, did not lodge an appeal prior to the extended deadline of 5 August 2011 and consequently the case is now considered finalised. Kaewpeng was found guilty on all charges: Murder, theft at night and theft with an act of violence. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment, reduced from the death penalty taking into account his acceptance of the charges. He was arrested on 21 August 2010 and is currently still remanded in Prachuap Khiri Khan Prison.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Walk the walk Back up one’s talk with action. ‘Walk the walk’ is almost always said in combination with ‘talk the talk’, for example, “if you’re going to talk the talk, you’ve got to walk the walk”, or “walk it like you talk it”. This is a 20th century American alternative to various old sayings which epitomise the notion that ‘talk is cheap’, for example ‘actions speak louder than words’ and ‘practice what you preach’. The context for the use of any of these expressions is in response to what is seen as empty boasting. People who are accused of such are said (in the USA) to ‘talk a good game’ or (in the UK) to be ‘all mouth and no trousers’. The disdain that unproductive bragging is held in was carried a little further by no less authors than George Bernard Shaw and Shakespeare. They both implied that ‘talking’ was itself an ineffectual alternative to ‘walking’. In Man and Superman, 1903, George Bernard Shaw suggested that: “He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.” Shakespeare’s Richard III, 1594, includes the character known simply as ‘The First Murderer’ - clearly not a man to be trifled with: Fear not, my lord, we will not stand to prate; Talkers are no good doers: be assured We come to use our hands and not our tongues. Benjamin Franklin is reputed to have coined the proverbial saying “Well done is better than well said”. While that phrase is certainly in Franklin’s style, there appears to be no hard evidence to link him to this phrase. The earliest usage that can be actually verified is a citation from the Ohio newspaper The Mansfield News, June 1921:
“Although he has no gilded medals upon his bosom, Howard Herring of the North American Watch company, walks the walk, and talks the talk, of a hero today.” More recently, and especially in the UK, where ‘walk the walk’ has never caught on, the phrase is sometimes condensed to ‘walk the talk’. This appears to have derived in the UK as a simple mishearing of the American original. The earliest example of it that is found in print is in an article in The Times (London), from May 1993. This came in an interview with Gordon Roddick, cofounder of The Body Shop cosmetics chain: “Some of the less friendly observers have determined that we will abandon our principles and reveal ourselves as shallow cynical exploiters. We must disappoint them... quite simply put, we walk our talk.” An even more recent term, ‘walk and talk’ has been coined for a storytelling device which has been widely used in US television dramas, like The West Wing and ER. It is a tracking shot of a primary character who is approached by various underlings in order to obtain a rushed ‘on the hoof’ conversation. Usually filmed using the rather inappropriately named ‘Steadicam’, the scenes are intended to make the exchange more visually interesting and to imply the busyness and importance of the main character. UK RIOTS I heard one Conservative MP on the radio today blaming Blackberrys for organising this trouble in London. I thought he should be a little more careful, using racist language like that. One of the rioters threw a brick through our kitchen window and hit my wife on the head, knocking her out. I ran outside and chased him down. I dragged him back to the house and pointed to my bloodied wife in a heap on the floor. I pulled out a knife and said, “It’s time to face the consequences of your actions.” Shaking, he said, “What are you going to do?” “Me?” I replied, handing him the knife. “I’m not going to do anything. YOU’RE going to finish making my sandwich.” I can’t believe what’s going on in London! Is it real?! I’m still in shock! Arsenal have signed an English player?!

Apparently Spurs have signed a new striker, a local lad with Italian roots. Harry is claiming it is a steal, pinched from under the eyes of Juventus scouts. His name is Grabatelli. After rioters loot and destroy Carpet Right, Police say Tottenham now has Rug Dealers on every corner. Following the uprising in London, Colonel Gaddafi has today declared the rioters as the official government of Great Britain. So there I was, throwing things at police, destroying cars and robbing shops. Then I stopped playing Grand Theft Auto and went to work. I’m a glass half full kind of person. I always wanted to own my own home in London and now finally I can afford a mortgage on a nice little place in Tottenham. I was thinking of somewhere safe to hide in London, somewhere with nothing valuable worth stealing, nothing new and shiny that will attract anyones attention. I found the perfect place, and at least the Arsenal trophy room is warm. Police in Manchester say the looters are not from Manchester. Must be United fans then. I was driving through Liverpool and it was awful. Youths threw bricks at my windows, tried to steal my tyres, I saw several people looting from a electrical shop and gangs of hoodies roamed the streets, looking for people to mug. God knows what it will be like now that there’s riots.

UPCOMING Hua Hin Jazz Festival 2011 - the festival has now been confirmed to take place on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th August. The new organisers are Bangkok Fanatix. Vic Hua Hin October Camp 2011 For more than twenty years, Patravadi Theatre in Bangkok has the tradition of making arts with young people and develops their potential. QINGDAO, CHINA Man dresses as carrot along with 49 friends to propose to girlfriend A Chinese man has chosen dancing carrots over dazzling carats when he proposed to his long-term girlfriend - while dressed as a vegetable. Kooky character Pang Kun dressed up as his favourite vegetable and was joined by another 49 bright orange carrots wearing sunglasses to pop the question to his partner Zhao Xinyu. After meeting Zhao at the local shopping complex in Qingdao, Pang excused himself to the bathroom and quickly changed into his suit. When he returned his was joined by pals and they all started bopping away to music - much to the amazement of Pang’s girlfriend. When they finally stopped for a
breather, a hush descended over the crowd and a recording of Pang’s voice was played over the loudspeaker. ‘Six months ago I met you,’ his voice began. ‘I still remember your shyness at our first date, my longing for the next date and my excitement when the first time I held your hand at the movie theatre.’ Suddenly Pang threw off his suit and got down on one knee to ask Zhao to marry him. Naturally she said yes - much to the gathered crowd’s delight. According to Pang he had spent three weeks planning the stunt, which cost him £10,000. Redditch council If you’re walking through Redditch and spot an orange lump on the path, steer clear, as it’s likely part of the local council’s latest bid to tackle dog poo. Reddich Borough Council have decided enough is enough and introduced a new scheme intended to highlight the extent of the foulsmelling problem in the town. Between now and October, members of the council will be patrolling the streets spraying any dog poo they find orange in the hope that it will help people steer clear and will draw attention to the issue. Rather than taking a handson approach, the government recommends that people who find dog mess which has not been cleaned up report it to the local council.

FEATURED GAME SWISS SUPER LEAGUE SATURDAY, 13 AUGUST 2011 FC Basel v FC Zürich, 20:45 St Jakob Park, Basel As there are no real standout matches in the English and Scottish leagues, and the leagues have not yet started in Spain or Italy, we thought we would feature the Swiss equivalent of Manchester United versus Liverpool; the two most successful teams in the Swiss leagues meeting in what really is a fierce rivalry, although it has switched from time to time, with Grasshopper-Club Zürich having previously been regarded as arch-rival. Supporters from both sides have caused trouble in the past, with the worst incident in May 2006. FC Basel had won the league in the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons and were set to make it three in a row if they won or drew against Zürich at home on the last day of the 2005/06 season. But if Zürich won, they would get the title. Zürich took the lead with a late goal from Iulian Filipescu and consequently won the match and the league. After the final whistle, players and fans from both teams started fighting on the pitch and in the stands. This incident has fueled hatred and bitterness between fans of both sides. Neither team has started particularly well this season; in the first four games both have only won once, with Basel drawing and Zürich losing their other three. It’s a big week for Zürich as they have a first leg Champions League playoff against Bayern Munich the following Wednesday. The Zürich fans will regard this league match as more important though, and manager Urs Fischer will be a brave man if he picks a weaker side and loses to Basel under the guidance of German manager Thorsten Fink. The form book suggests that Basel have the edge, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this match ends in a draw.
