community mourns the loss of ‘red bar’ steve
hua hin, THAILAND Tributes and condolences have been pouring in for Steve Scott who died last Saturday of heart failure at Bangkok Hospital, believed to have been brought on by a severe asthma attack. Steve was one of the partners, and the driving force behind the Red Bar in Soi Binthabaht. The Thai watering ceremony and funeral prayers were held at Hua Hin Temple on Tuesday (16th) and the cremation was held the following day. Some of Steve’s family and friends flew in from the UK to attend. Local friends and expats filled the temple and there were many floral wreaths. The Facebook page for Red Bar has been flooded with people paying tribute, as well as expressing their shock at his untimely departure. The photo of Steve shown here encapsulates the man - always with a genuine smile, kind hearted, generous and a live wire who had turned Red Bar into one of the busiest bars in town. Steve had only recently heard that he was going to become a grandfather, and he leaves behind two sons, Mark and Jonathan. AWOL would like to express our sincere condolences to them and the rest of Steve’s family and friends.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Tie the knot Get married. There is a suggestion that this expression derives from the nets of knotted string which supported beds prior to the introduction of metal-sprung bedframes. The theory goes that, in order to make a marriage bed, you needed to ‘tie the knot’. Like many such folk-etymological explanations, there’s not a shred of evidence to support this idea. It isn’t clear whether this expression derives from an actual knot used in marriage ceremonies or whether the knot is merely symbolic of a lasting unity. Knots have a place in the folklore of many cultures and usually symbolize unbreakable pledges. Actual knots have certainly been used in marriage ceremonies for some time and the tradition of trying the wrists of the bride and groom with twine continues today in marriages in the use of sashes which are placed over the principal’s wrists. The word ‘knot’, although not in the phrase ‘tie the knot’, has been associated with marriage since at least the 13th century. The Legend of St. Katherine, circa 1225 used the Middle English ‘cnotte’, i.e. ‘knot’, to mean ‘the tie or bond of wedlock; the marriage or wedding knot’: “Swa ye cnotte is icnut bituhhen unc tweien.” E. and M. A. Radford’s The Encyclopedia of Superstitions has it that: “In the seventeenth century, one or two of the bridefavours were always blue. These were knots of coloured ribbons loosely stitched on to the wedding gown, which were plucked off by the guests at the wedding feast, and worn as luck-bringers in the young men’s hats.”
The expression was recorded in 1717 by the English poet and diplomat, Matthew Prior. In his humourous poem, Alma; or, The Progress of the Mind he includes: “So to the priest their case they tell: He ties the knot.” Francis Grose, in his 1811 edition of The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue listed the ‘knot tied with the tongue’ with specific reference to marriage. “He has tied a knot with his tongue, that he cannot untie with his teeth: i.e. he is married.” The Jewish tradition, like many others, also has a long history of the use of knots in the marriage ceremony. The Wilmingtonian And Delaware Advertiser, January 1826, reported this item under the banner of ‘Miss Rothchild’s Marriage’: “At an early hour on Monday morning, Stomford Hill, the country residence of N. M. Rothschild, Esq. was in a great state of bustle, and most of its inhabitants were on qui vive, waiting the approaching hour when Hymen was to tie the knot of a son and daughter of the house ot Judah.”

Featured Game english premier League Saturday, 20 August 2011 Arsenal v Liverpool, 18:45 Emirates Stadium, London There is a plethora of big games this week, with Sunderland/Newcastle and Man. Utd/Spurs in the EPL plus West Ham/Leeds in the Championship, but this fixture is fascinating from a number of angles. Obviously the very recent (and drawn out) departure of Cesc Fabregas looms large, and the possible move of Samir Nasri is also casting a shadow over Arsenal’s start to the season. Both teams has unsatisfactory draws to start their campaign, against Newcastle and Sunderland respectively, but early games are never a good indication for the rest of the season. It is hard to know how both will approach this game but you would expect Arsenal, as the home team, to take the initiative and for Liverpool to play a counter attacking game. Arsenal fans would have been glad to see the return of Thomas Vermaelen as they badly missed his strong presence in defence for most of last season, and it appears as if Wenger has given the nod to Wojciech Szczesny to be first choice keeper, although he has pursued an unsuccessful rotation policy for that position in the past. Liverpool, in contrast, have spent a lot of money so far, with Jose Enrique, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam all making their debuts last week. It will take time for them to gel with their team mates so a game like this has probably come a bit too soon for Dalglish’s liking. Depending on which team gets the first goal, this really could go any way, but we don’t think there will be many goals and the most likely outcome is a draw. If Liverpool grab the lead we think it will be very hard for Arsenal to break down their defence, but on the flip side if the Gunners score first we believe that Liverpool have the ability to break through the weakest link in Arsenal’s team. Not a classic but will still be interesting to watch.
