opportunity knocks micro boom to boost town?
hua hin, THAILAND The Jazz Festival is here and if you haven’t already noticed the town is packed; for details on the festival please grab a copy of our free Special Edition available all over town and throughout the event. As noted a couple of weeks ago, this is one of a series of events which might well be the catalyst to kick start the town’s economy, with the elephant polo taking place from 5th September, the ongoing golf festival, and there will also be the return of many ‘part time expats’ over the next couple of months. While the town may not return to the tourist heights it reached a few years ago, there are definitely signs that the high season might well exceed the last couple of years, and this will be helped if, as many experts are predicting, the baht weakens against the Euro and other western currencies. The atmosphere of apparent political stability will also encourage people to come to Thailand again. The recently added attractions to Hua Hin such as the floating markets, new hotels and shopping outlets, slowly improving imfrastructure and the vast range of property available here makes the area more attractive than ever, and it is clear that many big business concerns are eager to be in place as a major boom looms on the horizon. The likelihood of Hua Hin being combined with Cha Am and Pranburi into a new province still appears to be on the cards as well, which would also mean a higher profile as a provincial capital, with all the benefits that would bring in terms of government jobs and increased activity. We really are at the beginning of an unprecedented opportunity for businesses and individuals in the area, although for many it might not feel like it as we trundle through a very low season. The Jazz Festival will help ease us out of the low and towards the high, so get down to the beach and soak up some sounds!

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. No laughing matter Not a subject for levity. Like ‘no holds barred’ and ‘no room to swing a cat’, ‘no laughing matter’ is almost always expressed as a negative. Comic situations aren’t usually referred to as laughing matters. That wasn’t always the case - ‘laughing matter’ was a commonplace idiom before anyone ever thought to make a negative phrase out of it. The phrase sounds as though it might be of quite recent coinage but in fact it has been known since Tudor days, as in this example where the Bishop of Worcester, Hugh Latimer published a tirade against the selling of religious favours - The seconde sermon preached before the kynges maiestie, 1549: These sellers of offices shew that they beleue that there is neyther hell nor heauen. It is taken for a laughynge matter. Edward V, who was king at the time, couldn’t have been overly impressed as the selling of favours continued for many years after this sermon was preached. Latimer was nothing if not persistent and the first instance of ‘no laughing matter’ is found in John Foxe’s reports of his continuing campaign against religious corruption - Actes and monuments touching matters of the Church, 1563: Then the audience laughed againe, and maister Latimer spake vnto them saying: why my maisters, this is no laughyng matter. I aunsweare vpon life and death. Latimer was devout and, if contemporary reports are to be believed, of a rather dour disposition - which is appropriate for the chief instigator of a phrase like ‘no laughing matter’. His parents considered that he had a “ready, prompt, and sharp wit” but by ‘wit’ they meant
‘intellect’ rather than ‘humour’ and “purposed to train him up in erudition”. An extra phrase this week! No holds barred Without restrictions or rules. The holds here are wrestling holds and that’s where the phrase originates. Wrestling has long been an Olympic sport, administrated by FILA, the sport’s governing body. There are sets of rules for each of the various styles of wrestling. Prior to the formation of rules, wrestling was a free-form affair. There was no need to mention any such phrase as no holds barred, as that was taken for granted. It wasn’t until after the sport became regulated that bouts where those rules didn’t apply were billed as such. The earliest reference I can find to no holds barred is from Manitoba Daily Free Press, February 1892: “Wm. Gibbs, the Kansas man, and Dennis Gallacher, of Buffalo, engaged in a wrestling match at the opera house here tonight. Gibbs was strangled into insensibility and may die. The conditions of the match were best two in three falls Greco-Roman style; no holds barred.” Forms of contemporary no holds barred wrestling in which rules are thrown out the window are Hardcore Wrestling and Cage Fighting. Hulk Hogan starred in a 1989 film based on free-form wrestling - ‘No Holds Barred’. Its tagline was “No Ring. No Ref. bedford, england Doormat handed eviction notice A humble 1cm doormat in Bedfordshire has been handed an eviction notice and risks losing its spot outside a flat. The doormat located in Albert Street, Bedford, was adjudged to be a fire hazard by Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association (BPHA) - the body which runs the two-floor apartment block. Renter of the flat in question, Lubin Reyes, a 37-year-old currency broker, discovered warning tape across the doormat urging him to ‘move it or lose it’. Mr Reyes, who has lived in the first floor apartment for more than a decade, told the Daily Mail: ‘Someone is being paid to walk around and do this. It’s ridiculous. I can’t understand what they are thinking, it my doorstep and my doormat. ‘I need to wipe the soles of my shoes dry or I might fall over in my house then that would be health and safety issue. ‘It’s right at the end of a corridor so its not like people will be rushing past it. It’s about one centimetre high and made of rubber. It had “move it or lose it” written on it, that’s like a threat. ‘It’s like they are saying don’t mess

However, once underway, Dr John Patterson said he found a rare and deadly cancer on Mr Seaton’s penis, and he took the ‘life-saving’ decision to remove it. Dr Patterson says he removed less than an inch of the penis, and the rest was amputated by another doctor. Four photos of Mr Seaton’s crotch were shown to jurors, clearly showing the organ had been removed. Mr Seaton told the court about his reaction when awoke from the operation: saying: ‘I pulled the
dressing down, and I didn’t see nothing. ‘Then I came out of the restroom and I said, “I’m getting the hell out of this damn hospital”.’ Mr Seaton and his wife Deborah are now suing Dr Patterson for ‘loss of service, love and affection’ after the organ’s removal, seeking unspecified damages. Mrs Seaton insists that Dr Patterson did not consult her over the procedure. ‘It’s his body,’ she said in court. ‘He should have a say in it.’ Dr Patterson responded by claiming that he did not think it wise to get permission from the patient’s wife. ‘My impression was she would not be someone I would ask what he would want,’ he explained. Testimonies in the case resumed this week.

Featured Game english premier League Saturday, 27 August 2011 Aston Villa v Wolverhampton, 18:05 Villa Park, Birmingham While league tables are notoriously misleading at this stage of the season, this is a top four clash and a Midlands derby to boot between two undefeated sides. Mick McCarthy must be delighted at how his side are performing and in particular that they have beaten two sides that are probably vying for similar mid table positions come the end of the season. Villa, on the other hand, have played the same two sides but with the home and aways reversed. Alex McCleish will know full well the importance of this game to the fans, and if he can win here will go a long way to appeasing them, as the former Birmingham manager was not a popular choice, despite (and because of) relegating their city rivals. This is likely to be a fast paced physical game with lots of incident; both teams are confident and scoring goals, but derby matches frequently end up as stalemates. However we think that Wolves just have the edge and will sneak this one by the odd goal.
