the elephants’ playground elephant polo returns amid appeals for donations to local foundation
hua hin, THAILAND The eyes of many will be on the tenth King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament returning to Hua Hin at the Anantara Resort next week (5th to 11th September) and a lot of jumbo fun it will be. However, some other elephants are in much need of attention too, and this was illustrated recently by an appeal for donations by the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation, who are looking to buy land adjacent to their existing location so that the Elephants in their care can have a lot more freedom. They are also looking to buy more of these beautiful beasts and have just completed the purchase of Songkran, a three year old female, with the very generous help of KVIK, the Danish Kitchen company based in Hua Hin & Bangkok, as well as the Vimolnoch family & friends, the Deleuran family & Michael Chompookas, Replica Design, Oriental Invest and many others. There is a further Elephant they would like to buy, who is lame and possibly ill; she is unable to work any more, but the owner wants in excess of 450,000 baht for her, and of course there are still two or three Elephants being taken round the town and surrounding areas begging. This practice, as AWOL has reported in the past, is illegal and could incur a hefty fine for the tourist who is caught feeding them. In addition to the above, the Foundation always needs monies to help with the feeding and looking after of the Elephants, the cost of which is around 50,000 baht per year per Elephant plus all the Vets fees, and more covered areas are required for shade. Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Purple patch An overly elaborate or effusive piece of writing. Also, a period of notable success or good luck. ‘Purple patches’, which are also sometimes called ‘purple passages’ or ‘purple prose’, were originally a figurative reference to florid literary passages, added to a text for dramatic effect. They were the literary equivalent of adding a patch of purple material to an otherwise undecorated garment. Purple was chosen because, as well as being a distinctive colour, it was the colour reserved for emperors and other distinguished statesmen in imperial Rome. Most of the early references to ‘purple patches’ contain clear evidence of classical origins, many of them including Latin text. The first person that can be identified as having used ‘purple patch’ in print in English was no less an author than Elizabeth I. In 1598, Queen Elizabeth translated Horace’s Latin text De Arte Poetica and this was published in 1899 as part of Queen Elizabeth’s Englishings: Oft to beginnings graue and shewes of great is sowed A purple pace, one or more for vewe. [Note: ‘Purple pace’ was the translation of the original ‘purpureus pannus’. ‘Pace’ meant ‘passage’.] Many works of art and scholarship that are listed as the creation of various English monarchs weren’t actually their own work, the attributions being merely a form of flattery. However, Elizabeth benefited from the Tudor notion that aristocratic women were suitable recipients of formal education and her mother, Anne Boleyn, made sure that “she wolde endewe her with the knowlege of all tounges, as Hebrue, Greeke, Latyne, Italian, Spanishe, Frenche” [and, judging by Elizabeth’s signature, caligraphy]. The queen became a noted Latin scholar
and we can be assured that the translation (and wouldn’t it be nice if we still used the Tudor word ‘Englishing’ for translations into English?) was by her own hand. The term ‘purple patch’ wasn’t much used again until the 18th century, at which time literary critics valued evenness of pace and style in literary works. Unevenly written texts were singled out for censure and ‘purple patch’ was the ideal label for a passage that stood out as overly florid. This idea was expressed forcibly in the 1704 book of literary criticism The True Tom Double: All a Man writes should be proportion’d Even and of a piece; and one Part of the Work should not so far outshine, as to Obscure and Darken the Other. The Purple Patches he claps upon his Course Style, make it seem much Courser than it is. It wasn’t until the 20th century that ‘purple patches’ were used in relation to anything other than writing. The term then came to mean ‘a period of good fortune or creativity’. An early example is cited in the newspaper The Westminster Budget, October 1900: True, it is hardly to be counted a purple patch of history, but a man must surely blame himself if he does not find something epic in the struggle. [of the common people] Purple patches took a turn back from the figurative to the literal in the 1960s when hippies took to wearing purple velvet and patching jeans with it. ‘Hendrix purple’ is now a recognised shade of dye in the fashion industry. Upcoming Vic Hua Hin October Camp 2011 For more than twenty years, Patravadi Theatre in Bangkok has the tradition of making arts with young people and develops their potential. It’s art camp brings together various professional artists to teach and work with the participants. HUA HIN DARTS LEAGUE
PRE SEASON MEETING The pre season meeting was held last Tuesday 30th August at 99 Bar in Soi 6, which will be the new hub of the darts league. Various items were discussed and voted on and the key details were as follows. The new season is planned to start on Tuesday 13th September, and all teams must register by at least a week prior to this. The registration fee is unchanged at 1000 baht per team. The makeup of the divisions will be announced once it is known what teams are entering, but as it stands the Lazy Daze team is moving to All Nations Hua Hin, who will also be entering a second team and Lucky Shot have said that they will not be entering this season. 99 Bar will be entering at least two teams, but this may also mean some existing teams will not enter if they cannot find replacement players. Normally the top one or two teams in Division 2 replace the bottom one or two teams in Division 1, but there will be some adjustments to try and ensure two divisions of even numbers, as well as trying to ensure that ‘new’ teams are placed in the appropriate division for the players they have.
It was agreed that from now on, any decisions made at the pre season meeting will be made by a one vote per team basis, rather than the ad hoc ‘whoever turned up’ system previously. It was also agreed that an agenda for these meetings must be sent out two weeks prior to the meeting, and any additional items must be added no later than one week prior, to enable every team to make their decision on each point. It was agreed that the doubles would remain as best of three 501 matches, but that Mickey Mouse would change so that only doubles and trebles in the range 15 to 20 would be counted from now on. All monies raised from sponsorship and registration fees were voted to be only used within the league and not for outside tournaments. Finally it was agreed that there is no compulsion on the bars to provide food every week, although if they decide to do so they can. Featured Game European Championship Qualifying Wednesday, 7 September 2011 England v Wales, GpG, 01:45 Wembley, London When the Home Internationals competition was still running, the UK was treated to regular meetings between these national sides, but competitive fixtures between them are now a rarity. They of course met in Cardiff earlier this year, a game won quite comfortably by England, and in general it is the pattern for these games. However, England have a few injury and form issues, such as Joe Hart the only fit goalkeeper who has international experience, while in defence it is likely to be a back four who haven’t played together before. Wales do not have an embarrassment of riches, but they do have some players capable of causing England problems, most notably Gareth Bale (below). However Wales best chance of getting anything from this game is a good solid team performance.
We expect this to be a classic game of the stronger team dominating possession (England) while Wales will be on the back foot hoping to spring forward in fast counter attacks. All coach Gary Speed and the Welsh fans will want is a committed, passionate performance, while Capello and the English fans will expect a win. We think the Welsh will get what they want, and we also think they will give England a scare, but ultimately the home side will get the points.
