hua hin, THAILAND The third annual ‘Reggae On The Rock’ festival in Cha Am last weekend erupted into violence as gangs of teenagers attacked each other with various types of weapons including knives, machetes, and firearms. Reports have suggested that at least two hundred people were injured, while some posters on internet forums have claimed that up to five people were killed. Videos became quickly available of some of the fighting, which was shown on Thai television channels, but the events have gone largely unreported in the English language publications such as The Nation and Bangkok Post. The story appears to have been broken by the Thai Asian News network (TAN) a 24 hour news channel broadcast in English. The five hundred police and security volunteers struggled to deal with the outbreak of violence initially, but did eventually make arrests and remove many of the culprits. This sort of trouble is not unusual at the event, and mirrors the trouble that occurred at the Honda Summer Fest earlier this year in Khao Takiab, where shots were fired and again there were unconfirmed reports of some deaths. Both the ‘Reggae On The Rock’ and Honda Summer Fest attract thousands of mostly young Thais, with estimates of crowds in excess of 100,000; no doubt the vast majority of them have nothing to do with the senseless fighting, but it could mean that these events are not permitted in the future. If they do continue, a more thorough security operation is needed so that weapons can be detected and confiscated, and potential troublemakers prevented from attending, although the beach settings make this a difficult task. These events will also strengthen the hand of the anti-alcohol lobby, which will be a worry for bar businesses.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Piggyback On the back and shoulders of another person. As we will see below, ‘piggyback’ began its life as two words, so lets start from there. What’s the connection to pigs and to other ‘piggy’ phrases like ‘on the pig’s back’, ‘high on the hog’ etc? Well, there isn’t one - because ‘piggyback’ has nothing to do with pigs. In the 20th century, we settled on the ‘piggyback’ spelling, but the term has existed in myriad forms over the years - ‘a pick-apack’, ‘pick-a-back’, ‘pig-aback’ and so on. The earliest forms of ‘piggyback’ were the mediaeval ‘pick back’ and ‘pick pack’. These are cited within a year of each other in the 1560s, both in essays on religious themes: John Rastell’s A confutation of a sermon pronounced by Mr. Juell, 1564 - “What a tale is this, that the oblation of the church should be borne vpon an Angell (on pick pack perchaunce).” James Calfhill’s An aunswere to (John Martiall’s) treatise of the crosse, 1565 - “To easy... is that way to heauen, whereto we may be caried a pickbacke on a Roode [a horse]”. The common ‘pick’ part of these derives from ‘pitching’, either in the sense of ‘placing’, as in pitching a tent or ‘throwing’, as with a pitchfork. ‘Pack’ and ‘back’ refer to the load and the place it is carried respectively, and it is clear that ‘pick pack’ and ‘pick back’ are effectively the same expression. Pigs aren’t known as beasts of burden, so why ‘piggyback’? This appears to be no more than a misstating of the earlier forms of the phrase. Pigs don’t get involved until the 18th century, as listed in Robert Ainsworth’s,
Thesaurus linguae Latinae compendiarius, 1736: Back, To carry on pig back ‘Piggyback’ arrives in 1843, in Baynard Rush Hall’s The new purchase: or, Early years in the far West, in which Hall recounts a tale of a group of rowdies playing at racing with pigs carried on their back. It’s clear from the citation that ‘piggy-back’ was then a term known to the book’s readers: Meanwhile, two thus doing piggy-back in reverse order, had gradually advanced to the door. Additionally, here is an explanation of the (apparently) related phrase, On the pig’s back To be in luck; in a prosperous happy state. If ever a phrase were unequivocally Irish, it is this one. ‘On the pig’s back’ is a literal translation of the Irish ‘ar mhuin na muice’, which is used colloquially to mean ‘well off’; ‘in luck’. That Irish version is known from the 17th century onward and the English translation of it has been in use since the 19th century. For example, this piece from the New Zealand newspaper The West Coast Times. August, 1890: If one third of the yarns about the size and quantity of the mica deposit in the district have any foundation in fact the Greymouth syndicates are on the pig’s back. .. and back in Ireland, in John Whitbread’s play Lord Edward, 1894: “Begorra he’s on the pig’s back this time.” The notion of riding on a pig’s back leads inevitably to ‘piggyback’. This term, in its original form at least, predates ‘on the pig’s back’ and also the apparently related phrase ‘high on the hog’ - and all these expressions have some association with enjoyment. Nevertheless, there is no connection between them. Many English expressions and proverbs relate to pigs, no doubt because, as a race, the English have had much close contact with them over the centuries. The similarity of these three phrases appears to be no more than coincidental.

diet (thanks to Terry) Yesterday I was at my local Sainsbury’s store buying a large bag of Alpo dog food for my loyal pet and was in the checkout queue when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had an elephant? So, since I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Alpo Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in hospital last time, but I’d lost 2 stone before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Alpo nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the queue was now enthralled with my story.)

Upcoming Vic Hua Hin October Camp 2011 For more than twenty years, Patravadi Theatre in Bangkok has the tradition of making arts with young people and develops their potential. It’s art camp brings together various professional artists to teach and work with the participants. amsterdam, netherlands Game show in the Netherlands ‘pits asylum seekers against each other’ A new game show in the Netherlands reportedly pits failed asylum seekers against each other as they compete for cash to take with them after deportation. Weg van Nederland sees asylum claimants who have been refused entry to the Netherlands answer questions about Dutch culture in a bid to win prize money equivalent to £3,500. The cash, designed to soften the blow of being deported, is won by the contestant who proves he or she has learned the most about Dutch ways of life during their time in the country. Glamorous assistants dressed in air hostess costumes pose questions as they test the asylum seekers on their knowledge of the Dutch language and of the country’s history and geography. So far, contestants on the VPRO channel’s show have included an aeronautical engineer who was later sent back to Cameroon and a Slavic student who faced deportation to Chechnya. ‘My first reaction was that this was a terrible idea,’ VPRO boss Frank Wiering said of the show, whose consolation prizes include tulip

Domino’s reckons it will keep costs down by using the Moon’s own mineral deposits to make the concrete for the two-storey restaurant, where staff will be expected to live. ‘We started thinking about this project last year, although we have not yet determined when the restaurant might open,’ a spokesperson for the pizza chain
told the Daily Telegraph. ‘In the future, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon, astronauts who are working there and in the future, citizens of the moon.’ In 2001, rival chain Pizza Hut delivered some grub to astronauts orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station. Think it’s safe to say the Domino’s plan slightly beats that one - only if it takes off, mind.

Presentation Night/new season Everybody enjoyed the night of the Presentation (see photos right) which was held at Bob & Nok’s bar where Bob compered the evening. Various prizes were awarded to players these included trophies but also for the winner and runner up in the singles final, pool cues. The youngest member of the Pool League is aged seven and plays for Bob and Nok’s was also presented with a Liverpool football strip. This, of course, was made possible by sponsors Bekk Solutions. Congratulations to the winners and to everybody else, thank you for making this a fun league. Good Luck next season. The game was first contested in 1927 with HSV recording a 4-1 away win. Since the founding of the Bundesliga in 1963, the match has been held twice every season, except in 1980–81, because Werder had been relegated to the 2. Bundesliga the season before. To date 139 games have been contested with Werder holding a slight lead of 50 wins to HSV’s 48. 41 games have ended in a stalemate. Hamburg have had an awful start to the season with only one point from their first four games, including a 5 - 0 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich. Bremen, on the other hand, are sitting in third place, level on points with the leaders (Bayern) with three wins and a defeat (narrowly away to Bayer Leverkusen). Hamburg have let in fourteen goals so far, and it seems likely that they will suffer another, possibly heavy, defeat here.

Stoke City to introduce onpitch midfield viewing gallery
stoke, england Following the signing of Peter Crouch, Stoke officials have announced plans to sell tickets for the middle of the pitch where fans will be able to watch the action taking place above their heads. The move to pair 6’7” Peter Crouch with target man Kenwyne Jones has rendered the middle section of the Stoke pitch the most valuable seating real-estate in the premier league. A club spokesperson said, “We’re the first team to turn football into a truly immersive viewing experience, we’re the thought leaders in this area. Sure, Sky will try and tell you that 3D is where it’s at right now, but what could be better than watching our keeper Begovic fire the ball directly over your head towards Kenwyne Jones and Peter Crouch?”
