hua hin, THAILAND Next Saturday, 15th October, the Hua Hin Grand Hotel Stadium will host Hua Hin Helps, a charity concert, featuring international and local musicians for a night of eclectic music in support of the local nonprofit organization, Connect3e. Performances will take place between 8pm and midnight featuring the headline act the Lincoln Davis Trio, local musicians, including the duo, Mr. Pahp and Mr. Doctor, and a southern Thai band, Sabaii Blue, a live dance show, a charity raffle and snacks from local restaurants. Hua Hin Helps Coordinator Peter Barry said the idea for the event began in collaboration with the musician Lincoln Davis, who is coming to Thailand as part of the group, Sailing Conductors, who are musicians sailing from Sydney, Australia to Berlin, Germany and collaborating with the people they meet to learn and perform traditional music. Barry added that “[Lincoln] wanted to do a concert here, so I said I’ll help him do that. We knew about Connect3e, so I thought, let’s join these together. The idea just developed from there.” “I hope the event is going to inform people about Connect3e, and the situation with Burma and the Karen, spread awareness, and raise money. It might also pave the way for future events for charity. It may be a beginning of something more long term,” Barry said. All profits from the event will be donated directly to Connect3e, an organization that helps provide support and resources for several Karen villages located in the Pala-U and Ratchaburi areas. In addition to performing at Hua Hin Helps, the Lincoln Davis Trio (pictured right) plan to visit several Karen hill tribe villages to learn their traditional music and create a fusion record for a documentary about their journey.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. At one fell swoop Suddenly; in a single action. This is one of those phrases that we may have picked up early in our learning of the language and probably worked out its meaning from the context we heard it in, without any clear understanding of what each word meant. Most native English speakers could say what it means but, if we look at it out of context, it doesn’t appear to make a great deal of sense. That lack of understanding of the words in the phrase is undoubtedly the reason that this is often misspelled, for example, ‘at one fail swoop’, or even, with some more justification as it might be thought to relate to birds, ‘one fowl swoop’. It isn’t difficult to find examples of ‘one foul swoop’. ‘Stoop’ is sometimes substitued for ‘swoop’ in all of the above variants, again drawing on avian imagery. So, what’s that ‘fell’? We use the word in a variety of ways: to chop, as in fell a tree; a moorland or mountain, like those in the northern UK; the past tense of fall, as ‘he fell over’. None of those seems to make sense in this phrase and indeed the ‘fell’ here is none of those. It’s an old word, in use by the 13th century, that’s now fallen out of use apart from in this phrase and as the common root of the term ‘felon’. The Oxford English Dictionary defines fell as meaning ‘fierce, savage; cruel, ruthless; dreadful, terrible’, which is pretty unambiguous. Shakespeare either coined the phrase, or gave it circulation, in Macbeth, 1605: MACDUFF: [on hearing that his family and servants have all been killed] All my pretty ones? Did you say all? O hell-kite! All? What, all my pretty chickens and their dam At one fell swoop?
The kite referred to is a hunting bird, like the Red Kite, which was common in England in Tudor times and is now making a welcome return after near extinction in the 20th century. The swoop (or stoop as is now said) is the rapid descent made by the bird when capturing prey. Shakespeare used the imagery of a hunting bird’s ‘fell swoop’ to indicate the ruthless and deadly attack by Macbeth’s agents. In the intervening years we have rather lost the original meaning and use it now to convey suddenness rather than savagery. Shakespeare is one of the great contributors to the English language and here are a couple more that you may not have known about. A foregone conclusion A decision made before the evidence for it is known. An inevitable conclusion. From Shakespeare’s Othello, 1604: OTHELLO: But this denoted a foregone conclusion: ‘Tis a shrewd doubt, though it be but a dream. A sorry sight A regrettable and unwelcome aspect or feature. Now also used to mean something or someone of untidy appearance. From Shakespeare’s Macbeth, 1605: MACBETH: Hark! Who lies i’ the second chamber? LADY MACBETH: Donalbain. The Church of Scientology advocates the idea of past lives and, as an avid member, John Travolta may be interested to discover that a man is selling a photo taken in 1860 which he claims is of the Hollywood actor. The seller is asking for $50,000 for the ruby glass ambrotype photograph, which he says could be proof that John Travolta has been ‘reincarnated’ (not into a new being but an identical body, presumably). ‘I believe this is the photograph of a very young John Travolta taken around 1860,’ said the eBay seller. ‘Of course, time travel can’t be ruled out as well.’ The seller, from Ontario, Canada, claims the man in his picture has ‘identical’ eyes and hairline to Travolta, as well as his ‘very unique trademark chin’. ‘It hasn’t been changed, tampered with or altered in anyway.
