shocking ivory theft Attack on Bull Elephant at Charity Foundation in Hua Hin
hua hin, THAILAND AWOL received a shocking press release this week from the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation about the theft of the ivory tusks from one of their elephants, as follows: “During the course of the night of the 6/7 October intruders entered the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation situated just outside Hua Hin and attacked ‘Sang Chan’ a 24 year old Bull Elephant, who had been separated from the rest of the residents as he was in musk. It would appear that the culprits sedated him before removing both his tusks close to their roots. The elephant is fortunately still alive but is in a bad way having lost a considerable amount of blood and is receiving veterinary care. Because of the nature of this attack it could so easily have caused his death. The Hua Hin police are investigating this heinous crime against a gentle creature who has provided so much pleasure for so many visitors to the Foundation. The obvious motive for this crime is the theft of the ivory, which is a banned trade throughout the world. A conservative estimate of the value of these tusks is in excess of TB1 million. Everyone who works at the Foundation is shocked and sickened by what we have witnessed. The Foundation is a registered charity set up by 3 local businessmen to rescue and provide a place for old, injured and exploited elephants who can either no longer work and in some cases are abandoned by their owners or sold to the Foundation. It is situated close to the Shrine dedicated to the 5 brave Thai soldiers, who convinced the attacking Burmese forces that they were much greater in number thus buying valuable time enabling the Thai army to regroup and eventually defeat the invaders. continued on page 5

The Foundation has been chosen by Her Majesty The Queen’s Project as the site of a new Craft Centre, which will be opening shortly. The Foundation relies heavily on donations, sponsorship and the money raised from visitors to the centre all of which is ploughed back into the welfare of these wonderful animals. At present we are trying to raise over 450,000 baht to pay for an elephant bought to the centre in a bad state of health as well as raise a further 100,000 baht to complete essential work for a water system for the elephants in addition to a better bathing facility for them. Further funds are also needed

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Cash on the nail Payment made immediately. ‘Cash on the nail’ (or ‘pay on the nail’) are extensions of the earlier phrase - ‘on the nail’, meaning immediate payment; without delay. This expression is first recorded in English in Thomas Nashe’s Haue with you to SaffronWalden, 1596: “Tell me, haue you a minde to anie thing in the Doctors Booke! speake the word, and I will help you to it vpon the naile.” Philip Massinger’s comic play The City-Madame, 1632, in which a character welcomes the arrival of a ship that has given his master considerable profit, makes the association with timeliness clear: And it comes timely; For, besides a payment on the nail for a manor late purchased by my master, his young daughters are ripe for marriage. The first example that can be found of the longer ‘cash on the nail’ version is in an anonymous open letter to the Mayor of Exeter, printed on a sixpenny broadsheet in 1753: The Commanders and Officers of those vessels knew very well that Wool and Worsted were Commodities of a real and intrinsic Value: Articles that would sell at any Time or Place for ready Cash on the Nail. We’ve managed to get this far without mentioning the story that ‘cash on the nail’ relates to the bronze pillars, called nails. These are to be seen outside the Corn Exchange in Bristol and the Stock Exchanges in Limerick and Liverpool. This derivation is printed in virtually every etymological reference book. Whisper it not in Bristol, Limerick or Liverpool but this story has to be treated with some caution. It is said that the oldest of the four pillars in Bristol
is mid-16th century and so would just pre-date the earliest printed reference to ‘on the nail’. It is also true that business deals were sealed on these pillars. The late dates of the appearance of either or the terms cash on the nail and pay on the nail, make the attribution doubtful. None of the early printed references make any reference to any of the cities with nails. The first time the suggested link between the bronze nails and the phrase was made was in 1870, by Dr Cobham Brewer in the first edition of the Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. That suggestion was made over a century after the phrase was already in common use. There’s not quite enough evidence to say that Brewer made the story up, but it does seem to be a strong possibility. It is more likely that the nails were named to match the expression rather than the other way around and that the origin of the expression lies in France rather than the west coats of either England or Ireland. Versions of the were used in several European languages: 14th century Anglo-Norman, as payer sur le ungle - to pay immediately. 17th century French, as sur l’ongle - exactly. Dutch, as op den nagel - on the nail German, as auf den Nagel - entirely, to the last detail. The Anglo-Norman ‘payer sur le ungle’ means just the same as the English ‘pay on the nail’. ‘Ungle’ derives from the Latin ‘ungula’, which means claw or nail. The sense of the earliest version of the phrase is clearly ‘payment with the hand’ - nothing to do with bronze obelisks. By around 1900 the US also began to use ‘cash on the barrel’ and ‘cash on the barrelhead’, with the same meaning as ‘cash on the nail’. That has a much stronger claim to have a literal derivation, as barrels were used as impromptu counters in US stores and yard sales. Alfreton, uk Thorntons breaks biggest chocolate bar world record with six tonne beast Chocolate maker Thorntons has broken the record for the world’s largest chocolate bar after creating a monster that weighs almost six tonnes (5,792.5kgs) - measuring in at four metres wide by four metres long. Thorntons produced the mega bar to celebrate its 100th birthday - and judging by the size of the super snack there’ll be a lot of bulging stomachs as a result of this confectionary construction. The idea for the record breaking bar came from a chocolate loving employee who was a big fan of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Paul Bell, from Thorntons said:

“All staff were asked to come up with ideas of how we should celebrate our 100th birthday and, because Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was my favourite film as a child, I immediately thought of a scene from the film where a bar of chocolate was shrunk and I thought - “wouldn’t it be fantastic to do the reverse and make the world’s largest bar of chocolate”.’ The previous record was held by American confectionery maker World’s Finest Chocolate, who managed to create a treat weighing in at an impressive five-and-a-half tonnes (5,529.29kg). Thorntons Master Chocolatier, Keith Hurdman, said: ‘It’s been one of the biggest challenges we’ve ever had to face here at Thorntons, and
has put all of our chocolate-making expertise to the test. ‘I’m really proud of all of the team; it’s taken months of planning and over 50 people were involved in the making of it so the Guinness World Records title is a fantastic achievement and a great way to celebrate our 100th birthday.’ The giant bar has been unveiled to coincide with Chocolate Week, which runs from October 10 to October 16, The public can get in on the act and sample the record breaking choc when it is broken up and sold in Thortons stores in the coming weeks.

I have tried to cut down on many things over the last few years to lose weight, I’ve exercised, cut down on fatty foods, reduced the beer intake even, but one thing I’ve not done is cut back on wine. “Wine is fattening” says my good chum Clive, who since he retired has gone in to Nutrition, when I mention this. “Although there are no fats in wine, it definitely contributes to a persons daily calorie intake with calories coming from both the sugar in the wine and the alcohol”. A fair point, but losing weight is a psychological process and I would feel seriously deprived if I were to give up wine, whereas skipping spuds is not a hardship or shouldn’t be. Of course, this all
