knock-on effect as the floods continue food supplies

suffer; hua hin hotels offer discounts

hua hin, THAILAND Indications of how badly the floods have affected Northern and Central Thailand are starting to reveal themselves in Hua Hin, as local shops and businesses face shortages of supplies, most importantly of food and drinking water, that have been disrupted both by the closure of factories and transport routes, and by the devastation wrought on agricultural land. The ongoing disaster is likely to affect the country for many weeks and months, although the government have issued assurances on the problem of supplies and that the shortage of consumer products and essentials will last no longer than seven days. Meanwhile Hua Hin hotels are reportedly offering a 50%discount to anyone affected by the flooding, and the State Railway is ready to evacuate about 1,600 flood victims currently sheltering in Bangkok to new temporary shelters in nearby provinces, SRT Governor Yuthana Thapcharoen said on Wednesday. The government’s Flood Relief Operations Centre (FROC) ordered the move, and Mr Yuthana said the railroad would move 500 evacuees to Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan, 400 to Saraburi and 700 others to Lop Buri. He added that 442 railway stations nationwide will serve as temporary centres for food and relief supply donation to provide necessities for the evacuees. Expats, tourists and residents in Hua Hin who are concerned about travel to Bangkok and beyond are advised to call the 1197 hotline to check traffic conditions before embarking on any journeys. Latest information as AWOL went to print was that access to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport is still clear of flooding, but extra time should be allowed for either heavier traffic or a change in the situation. continued on page 2

KNOCK-ON EFFECT continued FROM page 1

The economic effect on the country is predicted to be more severe than any of the other disruptions brought about in recent years by a succession of both man made and natural disasters. Tourism will once again be hit, even though all the normal beach destinations are not flooded, but access to them currently is more difficult. Domestic air travel has been severely affected with the closure of the Don Muang airport, although many flights are now going in and out of Suvarnabhumi. As of Wednesday evening, trains to the South of Thailand were starting from Nakornpathom Station instead of Hua Lam Pong. While AWOL has not been able to get confirmation at press time, it seems likely that the area in and around the southern bus terminal will flood or have flooded by the time the paper comes out. Bumrungrad Hospital has suspended all non-urgent and nonemergency out patient services until October 31st and anyone with appointments will have them rescheduled. It is advisable that anyone with hospital or other appointments in Bangkok contacts their destination before travelling. All our thoughts though should be with those who have lost family and friends to the floods, and have to cope with some terrible conditions, with a severe lack of clean drinking water and a high chance of contagious diseases breaking out.

soi 94 - a new nightlife hub

As Hua Hin expands, the already fantastic choice of restaurants and watering holes is expanding with it, creating new areas where eateries, entertainment and bars mingle together. Soi 94 is one of the more recent of these zones, although it has had a smattering of dining facilities for some time, but in the last year or so this has expanded noticably. The establishments advertised on this page are just two examples of the variety that is available on the soi - Souay Vista Social Club is tucked away past the little ‘hook’ at the top of the soi (call them first for more detailed directions) and has been offering live music and audience participation for over a year now, as well as good food and drinks in a friendly atmosphere (se pages 16 and 23 for more). New kids on the soi are the Tapas Garden @ Bar Tender, offering a traditional bar but with the added twist of a garden restaurant alongside specialising in Tapas and Sangria, as well as other fine European cuisine. Check out their daily specials and join in at their weekly pool matches to either cheer the team on or offer your services as a player. Soi 94 is on the left shortly after the new Bangkok Hospital on the main Phetchkasem Road heading north; other AWOL advertisers on the soi are the S & S Indian Restaurant (p10) and Siam Consulting (p13).

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Abracadabra An exclamation used by conjurors when performing a trick. When stage conjurors and magicians come to the finale of a trick and exclaim ‘Abracadabra!’ the implication is that a mysterious power is being summoned to perform the required magic. In our information age, in which it is possible to look up how virtually any stunt is staged, we don’t take the claims of magical powers too seriously. That wasn’t the case when the word abracadabra was first in common use. Mediaeval folk believed in magic as an everyday fact and any unusual event that they couldn’t explain was considered to be the result of some form of enchantment. They used the incantation ‘Abracadabra’ to ward off such bewitchment and as a remedy for poor health. It was recited repeatedly, each time with the final letter being removed, until just ‘a’ remained. It was believed that the strength of the illness diminished as the word became shorter. The charm was also written out on paper and worn in an amulet or sewn into clothing. The origin of this strange word is unclear. It was used in 4th century Latin but there are several theories that place the derivation before that, including: Roman sages coined the word and devised the repeated word formula in the 2nd century AD; It being related to another magical word - ‘abraxas’. In the Greek system of alphabetic numerology this word is significant in that it contains letters that add up to 365, the number of days in the year; and that it is of Hebrew or Aramaic origin, derived from the Hebrew ‘ab’ (father), ‘ben’ (son), and ‘ruach hakodesh’ (holy spirit) or ‘avra kadavra’, the Aramaic for ‘it will be created in my words’ respectively. Sadly, none of these theories stands up to close

examination and actual documentary evidence is as insubstantial as those fragments of mediaeval paper. A reference in print to the use of the word in English that dates back to 1582 is found in Eva Rimmington Taylor’s The Troublesome Voyage of Capt. Edward Fenton: Banester sayth yt he healed 200 in one yer of an ague by hanging abracadabra about their necks. The belief in the power of the word lasted well into the 18th century. In his Journal of the Plague Year, 1722, Daniel Defoe lamented the superstition of the populace when faced with the threat of plague: People deceiv’d; and this was in wearing Charms, Philters, Exorcisms, Amulets, and I know not what Preparations, to fortify the Body with them against the Plague; as if the Plague was but a kind of a Possession of an evil Spirit; and that it was to be kept off with Crossings, Signs of the Zodiac, Papers tied up with so many Knots; and certain Words, or Figures written on them, as particularly the Word Abracadabra, form’d in Triangle, or Pyramid... How the poor People found the Insufficiency of those things, and how many of them were afterwards carried away in the Dead-Carts. Over time, this belief receded and in the 19th century it came to mean ‘fake magic’. Terms like ‘legal abracadabra’ were used to denote the flummoxing of juries by fast-talking lawyers. Stage conjurors then adopted it into their inventory of the ‘magic’ words they used to punctuate their acts and the first known usage of it in that context dates from 1819. Some of these words, like ‘hocus-pocus’ (1634), ‘abraxas’ (1569) and ‘hey presto’ (1732) have a long history and a link to supernatural beliefs. Others, like the American ‘presto changeo’ (1905) and ‘shazam’ (1940) are pure stage patter. Some will be familiar with the ‘killing curse’ from the Harry Potter books - ‘avada kedavra’, which Rowling adapted from the Aramaic. UK residents of a certain age will always prefer the ‘magic’ spiel of Sooty and Sweep’s mentor Harry Corbett - ‘Izzy, Wizzy, let’s get busy’.

The Golfer (thanks to Karl) A golfer playing in Ireland hooked his drive into the woods. Looking for his ball, he found a little Leprechaun flat on his back, a big bump on his head and the golfer’s ball beside him. Horrified, the golfer got his water bottle from the cart and poured it over the little guy, reviving him. ‘Arrgh! What happened?’ the Leprechaun asked. ‘I’m afraid I hit you with my golf ball,’ the golfer says. ‘Oh, I see. Well, ye got me fair and square. Ye get three wishes, so whaddya want?’ ‘Thank God, you’re all right!’ the golfer answers in relief. ‘I don’t want anything, I’m just glad you’re OK, and I apologize.’ And the golfer walks off. ‘What a nice guy,’ the Leprechaun says to himself. ‘I have to do something for him. I’ll give him the three things I would want.... a great golf game, all the money he ever needs, and a fantastic sex life.’ A year goes by and the golfer is back. On the same hole, he again hits a bad drive into the woods and the Leprechaun is there waiting for him. ‘Twas me that made ye hit the ball here,‘ the little guy says. ‘I just want to ask ye, how’s yer golf game?’ ‘My game is fantastic!’ the golfer answers. ‘I’m an internationally famous golfer now.’ He adds, ‘By the way, it’s good to see you’re all right.’ ‘Oh, I’m fine now, thank ye. I did that fer yer golf game, you know. And tell me, how’s yer money situation?’ ‘Why, it’s just wonderful!’ the golfer states. ‘When I need cash, I just reach in my pocket and pull out £50 notes I didn’t even know were there!’ ‘I did that fer ye also.’ And tell me, how’s yer sex life?’ The golfer blushes, turns away in embarrassment, and says shyly, ‘It’s OK. ‘C’mon, c’mon now,’ urged the Leprechaun, ‘I’m wanting to know if I did a good job. How many times a week?’ Blushing even more, the golfer looks around then whispers, ‘Once, sometimes twice a week..’ ‘What??’ responds the Leprechaun in shock. ‘That’s all? Only once or twice a week?’ ‘Well,’ says the golfer, ‘I figure that’s not bad for a Catholic priest in a small parish.’

Desert Island A team of sociologists have planned an experiment in isolation. They send an Englishman, a Frenchman and a Japanese man to a deserted island and arrange to come back and pick them up in a year’s time and see how they have adapted. The sociologists leave, and the three men decide to split up the tasks amongst themselves. “I’m an engineer” says the Englishman, “So I’ll handle building a shelter”. He turns to the Frenchman and says: “You French are pretty good cooks why don’t you handle the cooking?” The Frenchman agrees, and the Englishman turns to the Japanese “That leaves you to organise the supplies” he says. The Japanese man agrees and each man sets about his tasks. A year passes, and the sociologists return to see how the men have coped. They expect to find three desperate men, unhappy with having to live on the island, but instead find a huge wooden house with verandas and porches and balconies. The Englishman comes to greet them, and when they express their surprise about the house he just shrugs and says “Yeah well I had a lot of raw materials so I kind of went to town and did the place up!” The team are amazed and are shown inside to the kitchen where they’re greeted with the most amazing smell of delicious food. The Frenchman sees their surprise and just shrugs “I had lots to work with” he says, “This island has loads of edible herbs and plants.” The team sits down to eat and are about to start when one of them inquires about the Japanese man. “Oh we don’t know what happened to him” explains the Englishman, he ran off into the jungle to sort out the supplies and hasn’t been seen since”. They all agree that they should try to find the man, and a search party is organised. They make it about 100 yards into the woods, when the Japanese man jumps out from behind a tree, stark naked with half a coconut on his head, and peacock feathers sticking out of his arse, and shouts: SUPPLIES!!!!!!!

Zvishavane, Zimbabwe Man claims prostitute turned into donkey overnight A man in Zimbabwe claims a prostitute he visited turned into a donkey overnight and now he is ‘seriously in love’ with the animal. Sunday Moyo, who has been charged with bestiality, told a court in Zvishavane on Monday that his donkey lover was in fact a hooker whose services he procured from a nightclub. Police on routine patrol in the early hours of Sunday had stumbled upon the 28-year-old, from Mandava township, performing a sex act on the donkey inside his yard. The animal was lying on the ground with its neck tied to a tree. Moyo admitted the bestiality offence, according to the New Zimbabwe news website, but proceeded to tell the magistrates his colourful tale: ‘Your worship, I only came to know that I was being intimate with a donkey when I got arrested. ‘I had hired a prostitute and paid $20 for the service at Down Town nightclub and I don’t know how she then became a donkey... but I am seriously in love.’ Moyo, who’s been remanded in custody until October 27, has been ordered to undergo psychiatric tests. nevada, usa Groom ‘ejects mother from wedding’ A Nevada man carried his mother out of a church when she arrived to stop his wedding, it is reported A US man faces charges after authorities said he carried his mother out of a church when she arrived to stop his wedding. The Record-Courier reports Justin Lew Harris, of Gardnerville, Nevada, carried his 56-year-old mother out of the church as she

loudly objected to the ceremony. Church volunteer Jim Jameson said Harris’ wedding at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church was called off after the disruption. He did not know what the mother’s objections concerned. Mamaus, brazil ‘Alien’ and ‘floating orb’ captured on film in the Amazon rainforest A picture which purportedly shows an alien lurking in the Amazon is being put forward as evidence that there is supernatural activity on earth. The image (below), which shows an unidentified being standing with its back arched a few feet from a what looks like a floating orb of light behind a group of children, was apparently taken from video footage captured by two British tourists visiting the Mamaus region of the Brazilian rainforest. The video was obtained by noted paranormal writer Mike Cohen, who says the area is known for its ‘intense UFO activity’. He said: ‘This is highly compelling footage that will be hard to discredit. ‘It comes from an area known for experiencing intense UFO activity. It is rather apparent that aliens are interested in this region due to its biological diversity. ‘The area was also the focus of a

high-level Brazilian government investigation known as Operation Prato, where the army was sent in to monitor and confirm an alien presence in the region.’ The footage has since been snapped up by a Hollywood producer to use in a film, according to Mr Cohen. frankfurt, germany Funny smell forces plane to divert A Lufthansa aeroplane was forced to make an unscheduled stop because of an undefinable smell from the kitchen German airline Lufthansa says one of its planes en route from Frankfurt to Madrid was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Zurich because of an “undefinable smell from the kitchen” of the aircraft. Airport spokeswoman Jasmin Bodmer says the Airbus 320 landed on Friday at 8.25am local time (0725 BST) and passengers were able to exit the aircraft normally. Lufthansa spokesman Peter Schneckenleitner said the crew’s decision to divert to the Swiss city was “purely a precautionary” measure, and there was no risk to the 85 passengers or six staff at any time.

Photo Exhibition “Light Less Ordinary” at the Vic Hua Hin Sunday, 9th October 2011, till Thursday, 3rd November 2011, daily from 9 am till 6 pm This show is a black and white photography exhibition in the various styles of a Thai graphic designer who relocated to the US years ago. Miranti Borvornsin’s “East meets West” perspective has been enjoyed by Americans in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York over the years. All pictures are limited edition prints and almost all of them are for sale. Half of the profits will be donated to the Dhamma Foundation, the other half to World Vision. Upcoming Fringe Festival – Three Sisters at the Vic Hua Hin. Saturday, 12th November 2011, 7.30 pm The Japanese contemporary dancetheatre company, Pappa Tarahumara, re-interprets Antoon Chekov’s

literary classic set in the rural Japan during the 1960s. It’s seemingly sweet portrayal of three bored sisters grappling with womanhood spirals in to a sensual and charged meditation on female identity, coming-of-age and the Japanese obsession with youth culture. This eccentric comic tragedy, narrated through dynamic choreography, is a powerfully condensed alternative to the company’s larger scale multidisciplinary works. Tickets for 900, 700 and 500 Baht (students 50 % discount) available at Vic Hua Hin: 032-827-814 to 815. More information on the Fringe Festival on page 12. BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO SOUAY VISTA a preview and review by paul bankes

We at Souay Vista are proud to announce a new house band, the SVBB. They came into the club about a month ago (Sept. 15th) on a night when the Stone Band was going to play, and when there were people already here and waiting. The fellow introduced himself as Peter Barry from Australia, and he asked if they could play a while to show what they could do. And so they did, and from the first song we knew we wanted them! At that time they were only three members – Peter on guitar and main vocals, Tim on bass and some vocals, and Ek on lead guitar. They admitted that they were very much ‘work in progress’ -- being at that time only three weeks playing together. By the time they showed up for their first night 3 days later, they had added a 4th member, Go, on drums. At this point, they began to come in to practice everyday, and became the hardest working band that anybody around here had ever seen! They had to, because Peter had organized a big event scheduled for October 15th, and they had to get their stuff ready. It was a charity blues concert to be held at the Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) Stadium next to the Grand Hotel. Other scheduled performers were the Lincoln Davis Trio from Australia, David Glasper from England and Pi Noi from Chang Mai, Thailand. The money raised was to go to helping the Karen (Myanmar)

refugees along the Thai/Burmese border. October 15th --The evening went off without a hitch. David Glasper opened the show, playing as people were arriving, -- and his authoritative presence, powerful voice and superb songs commanded their attention. A bit noisy so the lyrics got a bit jumbled, but his strong voice and good tunes carried him, and he received enthusiastic applause on every song. Pi Noi was up next, and blew more than a few minds with his highly unusual style(s) of playing the blues! One moment he was holding the guitar flat and was tapping, and the next he was playing in a finger style (almost classical) -- and then playing superb bottle-neck blues! He was joined for several songs by Ben, the cellist who came with Lincoln Davis. They were great! Next up was was Lincoln Davis starting off with some flamenco guitar. That grabbed peoples’ attention! Then he was joined by Ben on cello (the 3rd trio member, a tabla player, was unable to come). They played a number of Lincoln’s songs. Davis proved himself to be a master at orchestration – wonderful interplay between the guitar and cello! And then on came the Souay Vista Blues Band, Peter with his self effacing charm and understated humour, and when they got playing, they kicked butt! A former actor, Peter ‘tells a story’ with every song -- adding always the right mood and conviction. He has a great voice with just the right mix of gravel! People had a wonderful time!! In front of the stage was a dancing party for the last hour, with impromptu guest singers even getting up on the stage and acting ridiculous! A great ending to a great evening!! You people who missed this show will get a chance to see some of

Do you have a house in Thailand that needs looking after? Hua Hin House Care can organise and control all arrangements regarding cleaning, pool maintenance, gardening and pest control. Our service packages will ensure that your home stays in perfect condition. www.huahinhousecare.com info@huahinhousecare.com these guys again: David Glasper, a resident of Hua Hin (for now) will come to play frequently at Souay Vista. You may be interested to know that this man is a former rock star – he describes himself as more of a ‘shooting star’. He played in an English band in the 1980’s called “Breathe”, and they had a couple of hits that were huge in America, before drugs and bad management put them under. He’s had a few rough miles since that time, and he’s here now to sing about it. A great songwriter! This guy might be on his way back! So watch out!! Pi Noi will be returning to Souay Vista in a few weeks to play some blues for us. This will be a much better venue for him than the boxing stadium, because a quiet place is necessary to bring out his power and the magic in his music. He will be joined somewhere in the evening by Peter on second guitar and vocals (Noi’s not a singer) ----and by other players, depending on who is there on that night. Do not miss this guy!!!! We at SV have always wanted to feature the blues in a big kind of way, so it must be that the gods are sending us our dreams-come-true, because we always smile so nicely at the people all the time and we put out such good kharma! Ladies and Gentlemen, we now have “The Souay Vista Blues Band.” See pages 5 and 16 for details of when you can see the Souay Vista Blues Band in action, along with all the other live music there.

Featured Game champions league thursday, 3 November 2011 Villarreal v Man City, GpA, 02:45 While it seems that City’s ambitions for the Premier League are on course after their annihilation of closest rivals United, their Champions League hopes are not in such good shape. This game against Villareal is vital for both sides and a defeat for either will severely dent their chances of qualifying for the next stage. The Spanish side are struggling in La Liga and suffered a heavy defeat at the weekend in stark contrast to City, and in terms of confidence and momentum City must hold the edge, but their inexperience as a team in Europe compared to their opponents may count against them. On paper it should be a comfortable win for the English club, but we don’t think it will be that easy, and could well end in an unsatisfying (for the two teams and their fans) draw.

Above: Roberto Mancini may have every reason to look smug after last weekend but will Villareal wipe the silly grin off his face?

fergie time is over?

Injuries to key referees cost us, claims Ferguson

manchester, england After suffering their biggest home defeat since 1955, Sir Alex Ferguson has blamed his side’s humiliating 6-1 defeat by Man City on the Premier League’s inability to field a referee who is a Man Utd fan. Speaking after the match, he blasted “They outplayed us in all areas of the pitch when the referee didn’t intervene. There were times when they made us look stupid and yet the referee’s done nothing to protect us. Their lad David Silva was a different class, but the ref’s blatantly allowed him to stay on the pitch. It’s an absolute disgrace.” Ferguson highlighted the absence of their talismanic decision maker, Howard Webb as a key factor in the outcome of the game. “If Webbsy had been playing then

Left: A hair raising experience for Sir Alex Ferguson as he had to go into a crucial match without Howard Webb

Balotelli would have been sent off for blatantly getting into numerous goal-scoring positions,” Ferguson insisted. ‘And he would have spotted an offside for at least three of their goals. The fact that we didn’t get a penalty just shows you what we were up against.’ Man City manager Roberto Mancini disagreed with Ferguson’s

assessment of the referee’s performance and insisted that the scoreline didn’t flatter his team. He told reporters, “It looks like Colonel Gaddafi isn’t the only dictator of a hated regime who’s been murdered in his own back yard in front of the world’s cameras during the last week.”
