hua hin, THAILAND The extended public holiday announced last week to help people escape the floods ended on Monday but the town is still inundated with ‘refugees’ from the still threatening waters in Bangkok and elsewhere. There have been no official estimates of how many people have descended on the town in the last week, but the roads have been far busier than the music festivals held earlier this year, such as the Honda Summer Fest, which reportedly attracted a crowd in excess of a hundred thousand, so it is likely that the number is at least double that. On Monday the northbound carriageway of Phetkasem Road was gridlocked for much of the day as many were returning to their homes in Bangkok and elsewhere, despite the fact that there is still a continuing creep of the waters in and around the capital. It has been an interesting test of Hua Hin’s ability to deal with the numbers involved, made more difficult by the scarcity of some foodstuffs, but in general, aside from the traffic jams, parking, bottled water and eggs it seems as if the town has dealt with its own type of flood pretty well. One negative to report is the amount of price gouging that has been going on, with several essential items being doubled or tripled in price, such as eggs, which are normally only about three baht each currently being sold for ten baht apiece in some places. Ironically, given the reason for so many people being in the town, there have also been some water shortages in certain areas as the pressure to take water to higher ground has not been available due to the level of demand, and this should be a warning shot to those in charge of the water supply in the town that there is still work to be doneas hua Hin continues to expand.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Humdinger This is an odd word that means either something unusually large or an excellent person or thing; a sports commentator might say ‘that was a real humdinger of a match’ for example. The origin of the word is not as clear as it’s meaning however, although there is general agreement among scholars that it derives from the word ‘dinger’ in common use in the early 19th century. As with many words with uncertain origin, there are a number of theories or claims regarding it. One is that humdinger, and a host of other American words such as jazz, gimmick, doozy, and baloney owe their origins to words in the Irish language, according to Dan Cassidy, winner of the American Book Award for his How The Irish Invented Slang: The Secret Language of the Crossroads. However this work has been roundly accussed of being baloney by other etymologists, citing the lack of any credible written evidence to support the ideas put forward. Another amusing theory found on the internet is that the word derives from an “Arnold Humdinger, 1897-1932, American aviator, born in Philadelphia and educated at Andover and Yale, where he excelled in track and field events s well as academically, graduating maxima cum laude in 1921. His tragically early death during an attempt to land his single-seat Curtiss biplane on the summit of Mount Everest was overshadowed by the Lindbergh kidnapping in the same year, but he remained a hero and a legend to young American pilots, who gave his name to exceptionally fast airplanes and automobiles, and to anything that was excellent in its class.” (Source: What’s in a Name Part 3, http://www. angelfire.com/sc/walkyn/edric3.html).
Somebody went to a lot of trouble to concoct that ridiculous story and website, where there are many preposterous stories about word origins (another is that ketchup is named after someone named Noah Ketchup.). Perhaps the site creator intended it all as a joke. Surely no one in his right mind would believe that a professional aviator tried to land on the summit of Mount Everest! Certainly a humdinger of a story though, and credit to the creator, whoever they are. As for humdinger, it first appears in the written record in 1905. (Old Arnie was only 8 years old at that time). Most respected etymologists claim that the word’s origin is unknown, but dinger meant “something amazing” or “something superlative” as far back as 1809. There is no dispute that humdinger (and dinger, for that matter) are both American in origin. Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Kenny The Rooster Well, Kenny the rooster costs a lot of money, but the farmer decides he’d be worth it. So, he buys Kenny. The farmer takes Kenny home and sets him down in the barnyard, first giving the rooster a pep talk. “I want you to pace yourself now. You’ve got a lot of chickens to service here, and you cost me a lot of money. Consequently, I’ll need you to do a good job. So, take your time and have some fun,” the farmer said, with a chuckle. Kenny seemed to understand, so the farmer pointed toward the hen house and Kenny took off like a shot. WHAM! cornwall, england Surfers tackle Britain’s biggest wave Pictured right is the moment daredevil surfers took on a series of freak giant 30ft waves off the coast of Cornwall. Such conditions are more commonly associated with Hawaii, Tahiti or Australia but brave surfers made the most of the conditions at Fistral Beach, Newquay at the weekend. The waves struck the Cornish coast on Saturday in a phenomenon known as the ‘Cribbar’, which is named after a reef located at the north end of the beach. They occur in this size just once every 18 months when conditions involving the Atlantic swells and the onshore winds combine to cause the perfect surf conditions. Professional surfer Richard Sills decided to take on the dangerous challenge of surfing the wave, which is also known as the ‘widowmaker’. The South African, who has won a number of international titles, is pictured riding the breaking wave before emerging from the wall of water still balanced on his board. The Cribbar is considered by surf experts to be the UK’s biggest wave spot and is well renowned for its volatility, ferocity and power and is only to be taken on by professionals. The wave became the stuff of legend back in 1966 when three visiting Australian surfers stumbled upon the waves. Ever since experienced surfers from across the globe have come to take on the challenge. Faulker’s decision to sober up the criminal way, has now left him with a record he probably regrets. out and about Hua Hin is known primarily as a beach, golf and spa resort, and many tourists both domestic and foreign will spend thier time here happily indulging in all three, as well as enjoying the vast array of restaurants available, catering to almost every taste. However, there are other attractions for both tourists and residents alike, and the purpose of this occasional column is to bring them to the attention of our readers. For this first article, we are focusing on a place that many will have heard of or seen signs for but may not have visited due to both its location and perception of what it is. We are talking here about Wat Huay Mongkol, which is situated about ten kilometres west of Hua Hin in the village of Tub Tai along Highway 3218, and is well signposted from all directions. It is a temple and complex devoted to the revered Buddhist monk, Luang Pu Thuat, and is dominated by a huge granite figure of the man that can truly be called awesome. Thousands of Thais flock here at weekends to pay homage to this monk, and to pray at the pavilion dedicated to the spirits of the teak tree. Wat Huay Mongkol was home to the monk who was famed for his “miracles” the statue is the largest of Luang Pu Thuat in Thailand. A whole day can be spent in this park-like setting, part exquisite gardens and part sacred temples just outside the resort town of Hua Hin. Waterfalls, streams, bridges, and small pavilions dot the area, local people sit absorbed in the peaceful surroundings or contentedly munch on the packed lunches they bring. Off to the right hand side is a pavilion dedicated to the spirits of the woods and the trees especially those of the teak tree. Three large statues dominate the area, behind which lies

an enormous fallen teak tree, said to possess magical powers. Each statue represents different spirits and each possesses its own special magic. Supplicants kneel in front of the figures, joined hands, holding incense sticks, devoutly in front, petitioning for good luck or a special favour. This pavilion is very colourful, the statues arrayed in a variety of clothes bought for them by those whose requests have been granted. Along the back of the pavilion hang dresses in vivid colours of pink, blue, green, and yellow, all shot with gold thread, to be purchased on receipt of the favour. Orange robes for monks can also be bought here. The gigantic figure of the miracle making monk sits at the top of a flight of steps just a short way away from here. It is a steep walk in the heat of the afternoon so it is recommended that visitors who want to ascend should attempt this in the early morning. Two massive black wooden elephants stand
either side of the steps, decoratively carved and festooned in a variety of tulle ribbons and bows. Local people circle the elephants, walking under the bellies of the carved beasts, nine times for good luck. As they walk they pray, or ask for favours, merit, happiness, or just to be lucky in their lives. Other places to pray and make offerings are at the temple near the entrance/exit or in front of the statue of King Taksin on horseback. Other notable features in the surrounding grounds include a beautifully crafted Sala Thai, a small elephant sanctuary where you may ride on an Asian elephant, a well stocked lake and if you visit around January, fields of beautiful sunflowers. There are also plenty of places for refreshments. Wat Huay Mongkol is very popular with both Thai and foreign tourists therefore at times it can be extremely busy - a midweek visit is recommended. It is an unusual place, something very Thai, and few foreign visitors make the trip so it is well worth going there before it becomes a tourist attraction and coaches full of camera lugging ‘farangs’ start piling in to this serene spot.

Featured Game premier league Sunday, 6 November 2011 Wolverhampton v Wigan, 20:30 There are no real ‘humdingers’ this week, although Mick McCarthy and Roberto Martinez might disagree, as this game, despite being relatively early in the season, is a ‘must win’ for both, or at the very least a ‘must not lose’. While the table is still taking shape, both these teams have tended towards the bottom end in recent seasons, and some might say for good reasons. Wolves have a style that is probably more suited to the Championship, hence why they can always bounce back from it, and are a physical aggressive side. This used to apply to Wigan, but Martinez’ arrival heralded a change, and they actually play attractive footbal, but sadly for them without the necessary cutting edge in the final third. They are the lowest scorers in the league with only six goals in their ten games, and only one of those came away from home. Wolves may not make many friends, but you have to admire the determination they display, and they have started to add some more flair players to their line up. Their schedule hasn’t been very kind, having had to play four of the top six since the beginning of September, and they have actually done well in most of those matches despite losing. McCarthy will see this as a chance to jump several places up the table, and with visits to Everton and Chelsea coming up will be keen to get the psychological boost before the international break preceding them. We think Wolves will win this, and possibly quite convincingly, and we think Martinez’ days might be numbered as well. They had one of the easiest starts of all to the season, playing the three promoted sides, and garnered the five points they have from those games, losing every one since. While it may be too early to pick relegation favourites, they are looking every inch that at the moment.
