Is The Tide Turning?
Baht starts to weaken against pound and Euro, but pain worsens for US dollar earners
HUA HIN, THAILAND The last year has been a horrible one for anyone using pounds or Euros and a whole host of other currencies in Thailand; the baht has been incredibly strong despite the internal strife that has been afflicting the country. This is largely down to the comparative weakness of the economies in the UK, Europe and elsewhere, but it seems that there are now the first glimmers of hope for expats and tourists that Thailand will once more become a ‘cheap’ destination, except for the unfortunate US dollar holders. Looking at the graphs above and below, these show the fluctuations for the pound, Euro and US dollar over the last 12 months against the baht. It clearly shows that since the long and sharp decline of the pound and Euro last year, which bottomed out around February this year, there has been a slow but steady rise in those currencies against the baht. The dollar on the other hand has been the complete opposite, with a general trend upwards

until March this year, and a steady decline since. Given that the majority of both expats and tourists coming to Hua Hin and Thailand are from the UK and Europe, this has to be good news both for them and the Thai economy, particularly the tourist industry of course. It will also be good news for Thai exporters who have been squeezed by the strength of the baht, making their goods up to 30% more expensive abroad in the space of a year. See page 4 for the latest exchange rates for a range of currencies. EURO - BAHT

CALIFORNIA, USA Eva Longoria is married to San Antonio Spurs basketball star Tony Parker (the second time his name has appeared on this page, as Alexandra Paressant, who we featured a few weeks ago, claimed to have had an affair with Parker, a claim made even more fanciful when you compare her to Longoria). She is best known for appearing in Desperate Houswives as Gabrielle Solis. There are rumours that she will play Janet Van Dyne aka The Wasp in the upcoming Avengers film, and is also being considered to portray Mariah Carey in a planned Broadway show which is about the American pop singer. Once the Desperate Housewives series finishes, she plans to move to Paris with her husband (could make his basketball career a little difficult though!). 3

Hua Hin’s Hot Topics It maybe a sign of the times but two hot topics that are always generating a healthy response are the cost of living and the increasing crime levels. As currencies and exchange rates continue to squeeze expats that bizarre Thai concept of increasing the prices when the customers are scarce just adds to those financial woes. The fact that virtually no Thai businesses in Hua Hin can acknowledge that there is a difference between a two-week-tourist and a permanently residing expat is frustrating. Hua Hin is a tourist town hence you’ll largely be paying tourist prices, an expat ID card to get local rates would be a great idea but as with many others it’s unlikely to happen. The government recently added to the misery of those that enjoy a tipple now and then by increasing taxation on alcohol by up to ten percent. Since most of the population is known for its tendency to crack open a cold one on a hot afternoon the price hike will no doubt affect all but the ardent teetotalers out there. The bickering in the property section continued and the moderators had their work cut out as the usual trouble makers engaged in another round of digital mud-slinging. There will always be a number of distinct groups when it comes to real estate in Thailand, those that think everything is rosy and it is perfectly safe to invest here (these are usually involved in the industry in some way), those that would prefer to rent than put money into something they can never legally own and

those that have been burnt already and are out for some kind of justice. The advice that has always been given when dealing with real estate in Hua Hin is to use a competent lawyer, preferable a Bangkok one as Hua Hin’s legal ‘professionals’ are often involved in the property industry anyway. Another solid suggestion is to never invest more than you can afford to lose because, as we all know by now, you can’t own it anyway! An interesting trip report was posted on visiting the Philippines and how it compares to Thailand. There was little to separate the two as tourist destinations though the Philippines did have the upper hand on costs (it worked out to be around 30% cheaper), communications (everyone speaks English), nightlife and cultural barriers whereas Thailand came up better for cuisine, transport infrastructure and crime/ safety. The visa situation is very similar between the two countries however there are less bureaucratic restrictions over there whereas Thailand seems to be continually clamping down on the requirements for long-term resident foreigners. The full report, lots of comments, and many photos can be found on the forum. For all of these hot topics and plenty more get online at www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/ - Hua Hin’s only active web community.

Have you ever wondered where a certain phrase comes from, or what it really means? Every week we will expand your knowledge of English and its etymology with a different word or saying. This week it is... Flash in the pan Something which disappoints by failing to deliver anything of value, despite a showy beginning. More recently it has also come to mean a one off event, such as a one time good performance by a sportsman that is never repeated. Commentators and fans will often highly praise and then write off players by saying ‘it must have been a flash in the pan’. There’s reason to believe that this phrase derives from the Californian Gold Rush of the mid 19th century. Prospectors who panned for gold supposedly became excited when they saw something glint in the pan, only to have their hopes dashed when it proved not to be gold but a mere ‘flash in the pan’. This is an attractive and plausible notion, in part because it ties in with another phrase related to disappointment - ‘it didn’t pan out’. ‘Panning out’ can be traced to US prospectors and was used in that context by the early 20th century. For example, Paul Haworth’s Trailmakers of the Northwest, 1921: “The Colonel had told them that a cubic foot of gravel would pan out twenty dollars in gold.” Nevertheless, gold prospecting isn’t the origin of ‘a flash in the pan’. The phrase did have a literal meaning, i.e. it derives from a real flash in a real pan, but not a prospector’s pan. Flintlock muskets used to have small pans to hold charges of gunpowder. An attempt to fire the musket in which the gunpowder flared up without a bullet being fired was a ‘flash in the pan’. The term has been known since the late 17th century. Elkanah Settle, in Reflections on several of Mr. Dryden’s plays 1687, had this to say: “If Cannons were so well bred in his Metaphor as only to flash in the Pan, I dare lay an even wager that Mr. Dryden durst venture to Sea.” If you hear a phrase or saying, or find yourself using one and would like to know how it came about, send the phrase to us at awol@huahinmedia.com and we will do our best to print the answer, along with your name.

SPLIT, CROATIA Chuck Norris congratulates bakery over use of Chuck Norris
Chuck Norris - would you steal bread from this man?
A bakery which used a photo of Chuck Norris to scare off burglars has been congratulated on their plan by the legendarily tough action star. The bakers in Split, Croatia, had been broken into almost every week until they put up the poster of the martial arts legend with a sign saying: ‘This shop is under the protection of Chuck Norris.’ In more than a month since the picture was first
displayed, the bakery hasn’t had a single burglary. Now, Norris has left the bakery a message on his official website saying he is proud to be able to help even if not in person. ‘I am glad to see I have been of assistance over in Croatia where they are using a picture of me to scare thieves,’ Norris said on his website. ‘Maybe I’ll pay them a visit one day to make sure the message gets across - thieves are never welcome,’ he said. Sales assistant Mirna Kovac was delighted by the endorsement. She said: ‘We are so happy that Chuck likes our sign and welcome him to come and visit us any time. It has really worked for us as people seem to respect him.’ ARIZONA, USA Caffeine-free coffee plant revealed A pea-sized seahorse, a caffeine-free coffee plant and bacteria that live in hairspray are among the top 10 new species of 2008 which have been announced by scientists. Par for this hole A couple was on their honeymoon, lying in bed, about ready to consummate their marriage, when the new bride says to the husband, “I have a confession to make, I’m not a virgin.” The husband replies, “That’s no big thing in this day and age.” The wife continues, “Yeah, I’ve been with one other guy.” “Oh yeah? Who was the guy?” “Tiger Woods.” “Tiger Woods the golfer?” “Yeah.” “Well he’s rich, famous and handsome. I can see why you went to bed with him.” The husband and wife then make passionate love. When they get done, the husband gets up and walks to the telephone. “What are you doing?” says the wife. The husband says, “I’m hungry. I was going to call room service and get some food.” “Tiger wouldn’t do that.” “Oh yeah? What would Tiger do?” “He’d come back to bed and do it a second time.” The husband puts down the phone and goes back to bed to make love with his wife a second time. When they finish, he gets up and goes over to the phone. “What are you doing?” she says. The husband says, “I’m still hungry so I was going to get room service to get some food.” “Tiger wouldn’t do that.” “Oh yeah? What would Tiger do?” “He’d come back to bed and do it one more time.” The guy slams down the phone and goes back to bed and makes love to his wife one more time. When they finish he’s tired and beat. He drags himself over to the phone and starts to dial. The wife asks, “Are you calling room service?” “No! I’m calling Tiger Woods to find out what’s par for this hole!” FREE DRINKS An Englishman, Irishman and a Scotsman are sitting in a pub full of people. The Englishman says, “The pubs in England are the best. You can buy one drink and get a second one free”. The Scotsman says,”..yeah. That’s quite good but in Scotland you can buy one drink and get another 2 for free.” The Irish man says “Your two pubs are good, but they are not as good as the ones in Ireland. In Ireland you can buy one pint, get another 3 for free and then get taken into the back room for a shag” The Englishman says “WOW! Did that happen to you?” and the Irishman replies “No, but it happened to my sister.” DR WATSON Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine they lay down for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend awake. “Watson, look up and tell me what you see.” Watson replied, “I see millions and millions of stars.” “What does that tell you?” Holmes questioned. Watson pondered for a minute. “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?” Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. “Watson, you idiot. Someone has stolen our tent.” 8

Divers Open Mystery Containers;
Discover 20 Million Unsold Thailand Elite Cards SATTAHIP, THAILAND
Speculation surrounding the contents of several submerged containers in the coastal water off Chon Buri came to an end today when navy divers opened the rusted hulks and discovered millions of unsold Thailand Elite Cards inside. Additionally, some 300 tons of Thailand Elite Card merchandise, marketing materials, and signage have been found. “When the door was cut open we were prepared for just about anything,” said Capt. Kanchern Mottihaparn, the leader of the dive team. “But nothing prepared us for what we saw – a wall of golden cards, cascading upon our heads and reflecting the sun from above. It was breathtaking.” Later a navy dredging ship managed to extract the full contents and lift them aboard. Along with 20 million cards were about 5 million vouchers for King Power, 2 million complimentary passes for golf at Alpine, and 30 million brochures welcoming new members with a special message from Thaksin Shinawatra himself. The long-forgotten Thailand Elite Card program was the brainchild of the Thaksin administration, designed to lure high-class tourists to the kingdom through membership in an exclusive club. In exchange for a USD1 million sign-up fee, the card promised fast-track immigration privileges, long-term property leases and discounts at luxury spas, golf courses and hotels. Original hopes were that it would attract one million cardholders by 2008, but to date has drawn just 2,570. As a result, the state-owned Thailand Privilege Card, which issues the cards and operates the system, posted accumulated losses of to 1.14 billion baht as of 2006. Operating results for 2007 and last year have yet to be reported, amid speculation that the losses are even higher despite the continued payment of high salaries to senior executives managing the program. Ever since rumours had surfaced that the containers contained bodies of protesters killed during the crackdowns on 1992’s Black May protests, a media
The Royal Thai Navy made the grisly discovery of what was really inside the containers spotlight had fueled wide speculation about the containers and their content. Suggestions had also included illegally dumped industrial waste. However, the discovery of the Thailand Elite Cards has taken everybody by surprise, since no one has spoken of it in years. According to Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd “The discovery of the unsold cards and abandoned marketing collaterals suggests foul play. Someone is trying to hide the corpse of a long-dead tourism project.” Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has promised a full investigation into any possible criminal activity. However, Central Institute of Forensic Science director Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan has complained that her investigation has already been stalled. “I asked the Prime Minister’s office for a list of people who were on the Thailand Elite Card payroll from 2004-2006.” She said. “And I was told not to ask.”

The Sage is an experienced and well travelled mystic man and has become AWOL’s permanent horoscopologist (he prefers that to astrologer), and returns this week to show the upstart ape how it should really be done. However, future predictions will be allowed by the Sage Monkey, courtesy of his owner Ben, just as soon as the sores on his hands have healed. The Sage or the Sage Monkey? You be the judge... Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 The stars could reveal your future, but they’d just be repeating what the Love Tester at the fair already told you.
Cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22 The truth is indeed elusive, hard to comprehend, and subjective. What we’re trying to say is: You’re fat.
Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 People will come from miles around to seek your wisdom on all manner of things, which is proof that people will do anything for a good laugh.
Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 There hasn’t been a stampeding death in your area in more than a century, but your air horn and steer costume will change all that.
Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20 You’ll never smile again after the tragic loss of your lower jaw and lips this week. Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 The stars believe that a person must make his own mistakes, but they warn you not to do anything that may, say, burn down Chicago this week. Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 Only God can judge you. Unfortunately, He’s been appearing to all your friends and telling them what an asshole you are. Gemini May 21 - Jun 21 The black widow spider does not have the most powerful venom of any spider in the world, but it’s still going to do quite a number on your legs.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22 Take solace in this: There is a meaning and purpose to the universe, even if it’s far too complicated for you to understand, and won’t pay off for years. Libra Sep 23 - Oct 23 Some may call your breast implants tacky, but at least you had the guts to try out unconventional shapes. Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 21 You’ve always been a fashion-forward trendsetter, which is why, after next Thursday, they’ll all be saying that getting shot in the face is the new black. Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 Gradual, almost imperceptible change will make you a better person over the course of the next 37,000 years.

Khao Takiab - Kool Town Learn all about life in the friendly village
Welcome to our expanded 4 page pull out focusing on Hua Hin’s nearest neighbourhood and undiscovered gem, Khao Takiab. Every week we will feature news, views, attractions and special offers from the unsung village that is a reminder of what Hua Hin used to be. And there is plenty going on to bely the sleepy fishing village impression, with a host of bars, restaurants, hotels and condominiums, as well as top quality golf courses and pristine beaches.
Where is Khao Takiab? For those of you unfamiliar with KT, just take the road south from Hua Hin for about 6 km until you reach a junction where the main road bends right up and over the railway, with a U-turn underneath, and the leftmost lane before that will take you into the centre of Khao Takiab.
Little Known Facts
KHAO TAKIAB, THAILAND Another pub quiz is on its way at Sunset Boulevard this coming Monday 1st June, so with that tenuous link to Khao Takiab out of the way, we present some titbits that may (or more likely may not) be useful in answering a question or two! A duck’s quack doesn’t echo, and no one knows why. The combination “ough” can be pronounced in nine different ways. The following sentence contains them all: “A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed.” The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is uncopyrightable. Cats have over one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten. Pinocchio is Italian for “pine head.” In every episode of Seinfeld there is a Superman somewhere. The United States has never lost a war in which mules were used. All porcupines float in water. The airplane Buddy Holly died in was called “American Pie.” (Thus the name of the Don McLean song.) The only nation whose name begins with an “A”, but doesn’t end in an “A” is Afghanistan. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. Dueling is legal in Paraguay as long as both parties are registered blood donors. The characters Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street were named after Bert the cop and Ernie the taxi driver in Frank Capra’s “Its A Wonderful Life.” A group of unicorns is called a blessing. Twelve or more cows are known as a “flink.” A group of frogs is called an army. A group of rhinos is called a crash. A group of kangaroos is called a mob. A group of whales is called a pod. A group of ravens is called a murder. A group of officers is called a mess. A group of larks is called an exaltation. A group of owls is called a parliament. Every time you lick a stamp, you’re consuming 1/10 of a calorie. 111,111,111 x 111,111,111=12,345,678,987,654,321 No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, and purple. Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people without killing them used to burn their houses down - hence the expression “to get fired.” A snail can sleep for 3 years. What do bullet proof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers and laser printers all have in common?-- All were invented by women. Coca-Cola was originally green. Darts Oasis If you are a fan of that traditional pub game, darts, you’ll be glad to know that you can practice the fine art
at a couple of venues in Khao Takiab, and in particular Oasis Bar, who have been representing the town very well in the local darts league. They reached the semi final of the Cup this season only to suffer a heart breaking loss on Tuesday night in a 1001 playoff to Dick’s Office B, having earlier disposed of their A team in a previous round. The future of the team is in some doubt though, as they are not sure if they can muster a team for next season with one of their players departing Thailand. If you are a darter, maybe you can help them out? Darts night is every Tuesday from 7.30 at a variety of venues in and around Hua Hin. See page 21 for current tables and results.

Your Problems SOLVED
DEAR MARY, I am very confused about something that has been happening to me over the last year. I live in Thailand and have been having increasing problems with my eyesight when watching movies, reading books or on the computer I am finding it harder and harder to focus. However on a visit to the optician he has told me that there is nothing wrong with my eyes. What is troubling me most though is that on my forays into the ‘dark side’ of Hua Hin’s nightlife, I will pick up what to me is an attractive girl, only for friends to ask me the next day why I was with such a minger? Is it my eyesight or is it my taste in girls that is at fault? I know I shouldn’t be concerned with what others think but I am concerned about what is happening to me. Goggles, Hua Hin. Mary says:Dear Goggles, I have two theories about what is going on here; one is the age old tale that you may have been ‘self pleasuring’ too much which we have been told for decades affects your eyesight; the other theory is that your ‘friends’ are the ‘self pleasurers’ who are on a massive wind up. What interests me is whether you see any of their lady friends and how you assess them when compared to your own? It is a fact that everyone is different but general perception of women’s beauty amongst men is normally similar, so I suspect that knowing you have some doubts about your eyesight they are pulling your plonker, like the w****ers they are. But then again you may just have appalling taste in women.

Dear Mary, I am a British MP who represents a constituency somewhere in the black hole north of Watford, and I am visiting Hua Hin as part of a fact finding mission on how other countries’ politicians deal with the throny subject of expenses. As you may be aware there is a bit of a furore going on in the UK on this issue right now, and I want your advice on a couple of things. Firstly, do you think it would be acceptable to claim all my expenses for this trip from the public purse, given that I am doing valuable research into corruption and the avoidance of same? I am actually looking at buying a second home here so I have a permanent base in the area to conduct my ‘research’ along with my Thai ‘secretary’ Nok, so do you think there would be objections to claims relating to these? Finally, can you recommend a good discreet clinic which can treat VD and will give me a bill saying that I was treated for malaria? G.Reedy MP, Back of beyond. Mary says: Dear Mr Reedy, No, no and Dr Shaft’s Special Clinic, Soi 937, Petchkasem Road, Hua Hin. His methods are a little crude but he gets the job done and will bill you for car service if you want. I guess there isn’t much difference really. My ex-husband swore by him...or was that swore at him, I can’t remember. He was never the same after he had been to see him, that I can remember. Kept wanting to employ 15 year old boys to clean the pool, and started wearing Indian costume around the house. Sounds like it would be just the trick for you though. Incidentally I have passed your letter on to the UK police...
HARARE, ZIMBABWE President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has called for his country to adopt the UK system as he seeks to overhaul his government’s expenses policy. Following considerable international criticism, Mr Mugabe (right) is seeking to rebuild his administration based on best-practises from around the globe, and he has identified the UK parliamentary expenses policy as perfect for his country’s needs. “We have looked at the way the great democracies of the world handle their expenses,” said Mr Mugabe in a speech party members. “But nowhere have we found a fairer, more open, less exploitable system than in the UK. The West has been calling for us to be more like them, and I am here to tell you that from now on, we will be. As we agree to copy the financial policies of our western allies, let this finally be an end to claims of corruption in our country.” When asked if he would be claiming for the maintenance costs of the pool at his second presidential mansion, Mr Mugabe replied, “Come now, I don’t want to take the p**s.”
If the system said put our heads in an oven, we would, say MPs
LONDON, ENGLAND MPs on all sides of the House have come under increasing pressure regarding the outrageous expenses claims made over the last three years. With the Conservatives set to bear the brunt of today’s expenses revelations, David Cameron has been quick to point out that it is the system that is broken, and not the moral compass of everyone in his party. “We are merely unthinking, voiceless drones incapable of challenging a system so obviously capable of being corrupted for our own financial gain that our expense claims should come in an envelope branded SWAG.” said the Tory leader. “So for that - and being caught with our noses in the trough - we are sorry.” “But we were only doing what the system said.” “If the system had said put our heads in an oven, we would definitely have done it.” The focus of investigations so far has been the Government Ministers who have claimed expenses for costs such as hiring a small philipino boy to throw rose petals on the ground everywhere they went and paying for a large P Diddy-style R&B entourage for Hazel Blears. “We have lost the confidence of the public,” said Energy Minister Ed Miliband. “But thankfully every party has come out of this looking full of money-grabbing shitehawks, so there’ll be no need for a mass act of Harikiri among the cabinet.” “In fact, after today’s revelations we fully expect we’ll be able to base one of our election strategies on being the party with MPs not quite as corrupt as in the other ones.”

EPL Season Review Champions - Manchester United Champions League - Manchester United, Liverpool (auto), Chelsea, Arsenal (qualifiers) Europa Cup - Everton (auto), Aston Villa, Fulham (qualifiers) Relegated - West Bromwich Albion, Middlesborough, Newcastle United. And so another season comes to an end, and as the old cliche goes, the table doesn’t lie; the best team were Manchester United, and the three worst were West Brom, Middleborough and Newcastle. A sad day for football in the North East of England, as the Coca-Cola Football League Championship is notoriously one of the toughest to get promotion from. And so to the teams that have managed just that - champions Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham City and Burnley Wolves are one of the founder members of the Football League, and were an English powerhouse side until the early sixties. Apart from a brief spell in the seventies (when Sky Sports Andy Gray was their fearless number 9), the club was in the doldrums until their first (and only until now) season in the Premier League in 2003 - 2004, when they were relegated. Birmingham’s history has been one of a yoyo existence between the top flight and the division below, almost throughout their existence. They have bounced back immediately to the Premier League after their last relegation. Burnley won their play off against Sheffield Utd and it is only football that benefits, as they did so with style that contrasted drastically to the lump it forward suing whingers. Another founder member of the league with a proud history, this is their first visit to the Premier League. It is too early to make predictions for next season, as it is likely that the next transfer window will be a very busy one, as clubs scramble to strengthen their squads, and
in some cases, get weaker due to financial restraints (Portsmouth for example). The interesting clubs to watch next season will be the perennial wannabees, Spurs and Manchester City, as both have money and have recovered well after poor starts. Fulham may well struggle with the demands of European football after over achieving this season. Everton and Aston Villa will also need to invest if they are to have any chance of challenging the established top four. Arsenal and Chelsea will have been stung by their relative failures this season and it is looking likely that both will have new managers next season. Who they are will be pivotal to their performance next season. Man Utd and Liverpool had a tremendous battle this year and a lot will depend on whether Benitez is backed again in the transfer market - he desperately needs another top striker to complement or step in for Torres and convert all the draws from this season into wins next. United are a phenomenon
and probably don’t need to sign anyone, but undoubtedly will to try and maintain their position. West Ham could be another interesting team to watch, if the off field problems with finances get resolved. Zola has shown himself to be an astute manager but will face a battle to hold on to some of his players. If we had to predict teams to struggle next season, we think Portsmouth, Stoke, Wigan and Sunderland will, along with, predictably, the newly promoted sides. An interesting close season awaits...

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Feeling Blue A tight, tense, tough tackling final in prospect LONDON, ENGLAND The FA Cup Final Saturday, 30 May 2009 Chelsea v Everton, 21:00 While it must always be hoped that any FA Cup final is a classic, too often they fail to live up to the expectations of them. However this year it seems that few are expecting such a classic, given the
nature of the two teams playing. The individuals on both sides are good and great players, but the team ethos for both seems to be to stifle the other team and grind out a result judging by their performances in the league. Both Everton and Chelsea are physically imposing teams, and this will be no game for the faint hearted. Set pieces will be key

areas where the big boys will collide on a regular basis, and we think this final will be littered with free kicks, injury breaks and cards. The referee, Howard Webb, will be a key component of the match, and fortunately is one of the best around, and is a great exponent of the advantage rule. The much criticised pitch is also being relaid after extensive complaints from several managers, and it has to be hoped that they get it right this time, and that it doesn’t influence the outcome unfairly. Predicting the two teams is tricky, particularly for Chelsea, who have such riches available, but here are what we think the likely starting line ups will be: Chelsea - Cech, Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Ashley Cole, Ballack, Lampard, Essien, Malouda, Anelka, Drogba.
Everton - Howard, Hibbert, Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Osman, Neville, Fellaini, Pienaar, Cahill, Saha Predicting the outcome of the
match is even trickier! We don’t think there will be a lot of goals, as both defences are strong units, although Cech (above) has been showing unusual lapses this season, which the Toffees and Moyes will we are sure have noted. We think Everton will concede possession to Chelsea over the match, but will be tough to break down. Without question though Chelsea have the greater striking threat in Anelka and Drogba (left), but the midfield of Everton has more creativity in the shape of Pienaar, Osman and Cahill (far left). Undoubtedly most people will see Chelsea as the favourites, but we are opting to pick the underdog to win this time. The desire on both sides will be great, but we also feel that Everton’s will be the greater, having not won a major trophy for so long. One way or another though, the Blues are going to win!
