Dirty sea and beaches prompts possible pilot scheme in Hua Hin and Cha Am
hua hin, thailand Following a reported series of complaints about the condtion and cleanliness of Thailand’s sea and beaches, a study group has come up with a novel plan to try and fund a clean up - beach tolls. The study group, Thailand Environmental Recovery Demands Study (TERDS), reported that the number of complaints by Hua Hin beach now (above), and tourists about the sea and beaches an unchecked future? (below left) throughout Thailand had more than doubled in the last five years. It was also cited as a ‘significant’ reason for 30% of tourists to go elsewhere for a beach holiday. The revolutionary idea TERDS has come up with is to place tolls at every entrance to beaches, with a suggested fee of 20 baht per person to enter the beach. This money would both pay for the beach toll attendants and for a paid army of workers to constantly clean
the beach, as well as introduce measures to clean up the sea near the beach. TERDS suggests that a pilot scheme is set up to test the idea out, with Hua Hin being listed as one of the ‘ideal’ places, based both on numbers of complaints as well as the ease that such a scheme could Continued on page 2
