Lockdown Security tightening as ASEAN summit approaches
hua hin, thailand Following the apparently successful hosting of the delayed 14th ASEAN Summit meeting at the end of February, the same venue is being used for the meeting being held between 23rd and 25th October. The 15th ASEAN Summit was originally rescheduled to take place in Phuket, but due to a clash with a vegetarian festival taking place at the same time, it was decided to move it to Hua Hin and Cha Am. The last meeting was surprisingly low key as regards security, but this time there appears to be a bigger effort, with authorities possibly fearing a repeat of the embarrasing scenes that took place in Pattaya in mid - April, when the meeting was cancelled in chaos as red-shirt protesters breached weak security and invaded the venue. Foreign leaders were evacuated by helicopter and boat and martial law declared. The government has already stated that the Internal Security Act will be enforced around the summit
the summit. A number of temporary sites have been set up to register vehicles - you are required to present some form of identification such as a passport or driving licence, the vehicle documents and house documents. Stickers are apparently being issued around 15th October, and any vehicles not registered will be stopped at the various checkpoints that will be set up around the area. It is thought that the security measures will be in force for about a week before and a few days after the summit, about a 15 day period in total.
INSIDE AWOL Above: Red shirt Pattaya protests venues this time, and measures are already underway.
