March of the Coneheads Congestion looms as authorities nail down traffic restrictions for summit
hua hin, thailand The bane of any British motorist on a Bank Holiday weekend, the ubiquitous traffic cone (right), has reared its ugly head this week in Hua Hin as the Thai authorities prepare for this weekend’s ASEAN summit, due to start on Friday 23rd October and running until Sunday 25th, although attendees and their entourages already started arriving at the beginning of this week and will be here into next. In combination with the usual parking restrictions, Phetkasem Road seems destined to become completely gridlocked for hours every day, as the outside lane in each direction has been coned off to allow those attending the summit at the Dusit Resort a clear run from their accommodation and back. In theory, this still leaves two lanes in each direction for
traffic through in most parts, they have been nailed to the road, and it seems certain that these nails will get exposed as wayward motorists strike cones, no doubt causing punctures and accidents which will cause further problems. While the precautions are understandable following the trouble in Pattaya, our advice to residents is to either stay at home or get out of town until it is all over.
