Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell UK Sausages, Ham, you how it came about. Bacon, Pies, Teas etc. This week it is.... Cheap at half Call 087 155 7737 or 089 985 7473 the price ‘Cheap at half the price’ has joined the list of English phrases that don’t convey any useful literal meaning, but which are used in their entirety rather than by being reflected on word by word. Other examples that make little literal sense are ‘put your best foot forward’, ‘head over heels’ and, more recently, ‘I could care less’. Anyone who suffers from literalism, faced with an item offered at half the usual price would expect it to be cheap - what isn’t cheap if you halve its price? ‘Cheap at twice the price’, now there is a bargain. The interpretation of this phrase has caused some debate, with the following three positions summing up that debate: 1. ‘Cheap at half the price’ is understood to mean ‘reasonably priced’ and if people understand that meaning why worry about logical niceties? 2. It was never intended to be taken seriously and is a pun on the meaningful phrase ‘cheap at twice the price’, intended either humorously or in order to deceive. 3. It is just an error made by people who meant to say ‘cheap at twice the price’ but didn’t think hard enough about what they were saying. ‘Cheap at half the price’ is typical of the street cries of barrow boys. Many of these make no strict sense and stem from the same kind of linguistic exuberance and humour that brought us Cockney rhyming slang. Another theme in barrow boys’ calls is the attempt to mislead or at least distract the public and draw their attention away from whatever mild scam the traders might be engaged in. For example, there’s a street cry from the 1940s - ‘apples a pound pears’. This makes no sense whatsoever, but sounds as though it ought to. Likewise with ‘cheap at half the price’. In the hustle and bustle of a street market it sounds as though the customer is getting a bargain. Given the time to think the phrase through (and who bothers to anyway other than poor sufferers who dwell on such things?), it is clear that no promise of value for money was made. ‘Cheap at half the price’ is by no means recent. Here’s an example from The Fort Wayne Daily Sentinel, October 1871: “A New Foundland dog recently sold in this city for $75. He was cheap at half the price.” As an example of the confusion this term causes we couldn’t do better. Did they intend us to think the dog was inexpensive at $75 or that it would have been had it been sold for $37.50?

Millions of frogs close road in Greece
As if Greece didn’t have enough problems already, a major road was forced to shut down for hours after an invasion of millions frogs. Greek officials said that the massed ranks of frogs has forced a key highway near the town of Langadas in the north of the country to close for two hours on Wednesday. Giorgos Thanoglou, chief of traffic police in Thessaloniki, which lies 12 miles west of the Biblical frog plague’s epicentre, said that there were ‘millions’ of frogs on the road. Authorities had to shut the Egnatia highway down after three cars skidded off the road as their drivers tried to dodge frogs. There were no reports of any humans being injured, although a few of the frogs 6
probably didn’t fare so well. Thanoglou suggested that the amphibians influx could have been due to the frogs leaving a nearby lake to forage for food. ‘There was a carpet of frogs,’ he added. Malliss, germany Bank robbers blow up entire bank, still don’t get any money Wannabe bank-robbers in Germany were forced to leave empty-handed after a slight misjudgement over the amount of explosives needed meant they destroyed the whole bank - except for the thing with the money inside. The bank destruction took place in the northeastern German village of Malliss (which, if it only got a little bigger, would be a town called Malliss). The bank was reduced to a pile of rubble and its roof completely obliterated by the night-time explosion, while cars and buildings up to 100 metres away were damaged. However, in the ruins of the bank, there was one thing left completely intact: the cash machine. ‘The explosion was so big, they had to run away without the money,’ said local police spokesman Niels Borgmann. ‘Something evidently didn’t work the way the robbers wanted it to,’ he added with masterful understatement. Nobody is thought to have been injured in the blast. Police are still hunting for the culprits.

Johannesburg, Ellis Park Ellis Park was first opened in 1928 as a rugby union stadium and then demolished and rebuilt in 1982.
