hua hin, thailand A walk around Hua Hin centre in recent weeks has been a sobering experience on some nights, with many bars and very few customers; while this is not universal in the area as a whole, and you will find bustling restaurants and busy out of town bars, it is clear that this low season is particularly slow, exacerbated by the strong baht making Thailand less cheap for tourists, and of course the political problems and violent protests that have occurred in a small section of Bangkok. However the key phrase in that last sentence is ‘a small section of Bangkok’. Hua Hin has been totally untouched by the protest and was not one of the areas affected by the curfew imposed elsewhere. Travel to and from the international airport in Bangkok was barely affected. The fly in the ointment has been the over-reaction of the various western governments and the subsequent unavailability of
Bangkok Hospital, Boonthavorn (home products superstore), several new hotels and condominiums, and more. Prices for land and property are probably as low now as they are likely to be ever again. For the tourist there are plenty of discounted hotels or other accommodation, easy access to quiet beaches, fantastic golf courses with no waiting and a plethora of other things that made Hua Hin the popular destination it should be. The present may be difficult, but the future is most definitely insurance cover for tourists coming bright. here. It is surely time for the various bodies to admit that it is safe to travel to Thailand (and really has been all along). Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell UK Sausages, Ham, you how it came about. Bacon, Pies, Teas etc. This week it is....A complete Call 087 155 7737 or 089 985 7473 shambles A scene of disorder; a ruin; a mess. Journalists today like to hype things up. Nothing is ever new, it is brand new and more often brand spanking new. Likewise, the nice little word ‘shambles’ is now almost always accompanied by one of the intensifiers ‘total’ or ‘complete’. That intensification began around the middle of the 19th century - for example, this piece from the English literary journal Bentley’s Miscellany, 1846: I stepped onto her decks; they were a complete shambles, a dozen or more men lay about the after part of the ship. Note the link between ‘shambles’ and blood and gore - more on that later. Many newspaper stories in early 2010 have had occasion to refer to shambles. The accounts of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have described the cities of Port-au-Prince and Conception as ‘a total shambles’, ‘a complete shambles’ etc. It has also been reported that The Shambles area of York has been voted ‘Britain’s most picturesque street’. Even there, shambles wasn’t allowed out alone, as the Daily Mail’s report on Google’s Street View Awards, March 2010: “Britain’s most picturesque street is a complete Shambles” What’s going on here? The same newspapers are using ‘shambles’ to describe ‘the worst of cities’ and ‘the best of cities’. Oddly enough, for two apparent polar extremes, the ‘devastated’ shambles and the ‘pretty’ shambles derive from the same source. More oddly still, that source is a small wooden bench. As early as AD825 there is a documentary record of the Old English word ‘scomul’ [later called shamble], meaning ‘footstool’. This derives from the Latin ‘scamellum’, meaning ‘small bench’. By AD971 ‘shamble’ had been recorded as meaning ‘bench for the sale of goods’ and by 1305 ‘stall for the sale of meat’. Here’s where York comes into it. The introduction to a 1410 copy of the text of the York Mystery Plays makes reference to a dispute between various crafts guilds in the town. Candlemakers were up in arms complaining that other guilds were muscling in on their territory and selling candles without a licence. The text is long and difficult to decipher, but the important point from our perspective is that it makes specific mention of York’s ‘Flesshchameles’, [‘flesh shambles’], i.e. ‘stalls selling meat’. Other English towns also had ‘shambles’ meat markets, for example Nottingham, as is recounted in The Records of the Borough of Nottingham, 1484: The twychell betwix ye Shaumelles and ye Draperie [The narrow lane between the meat market and the clothes shops]. Go to York today and you will find the narrow lanes of The Shambles to be bustling with tourists and shoppers. In the Middle Ages it must have been mayhem, the streets crammed full with stalls of all manner of trades - in addition to the Shambles’ bouchers, the 1413 Register of the Freemen of York lists wevers, cordwaners, bakesters, glovers, fysshmangers and many more. It isn’t surprising that ‘shambles’ became a byword for chaos and disorder. A shamble, beginning as a humble stool, took a step by step linguistic journey to become a ruin, and that’s the shambles of earthquake zones that we have become all too familiar with. The Shambles in York, once a stinking meat market, headed in another direction and is now an model of Olde Englyshe charm.

73-year-old golfer hits two holes-in-one Veteran golfer Eric Fogg was celebrating last night after scoring an amazing double – he hit two holesin-one in a single round. Mr Fogg, 73, played the perfect shot at the eighth and then the 16th at Ceredigion Golf Club in west Wales, beating odds of around 63 million to one. He said: ‘It was my lucky day and one I’ll never forget.’ It was Eric’s sixth and seventh holes-in-one in his 35 years of playing the game. Washington, USA Police stunned by rectal capacity of prison smuggler Police in Washington state were amazed to discover the amount of contraband one prisoner was able to smuggle into a jail by hiding it up his rectum. Authorities in Wenatchee, Washington, were surprised to find that the man had managed to sneak a cigarette lighter, cigarette papers, a bag of tobacco the size of a golf-ball, a bottle of tattoo ink, eight tattoo needles, a small baggie of what was thought to be marijuana, and an inch-long smoking pipe into jail by hiding them up himself. The man was booked into the jail last Wednesday on a disorderly conduct charge, and nothing was discovered 6
when he was initially strip searched. But when a prison official later discovered a plastic bag and duct tape in the toilet, the prisoner was questioned again and eventually handed over the contraband. Police Department spokesman Sergeant John Kruse told the Wenatchee World newspaper: ‘We were all wondering, “How do you put all that up there?” The tobacco was pretty impressive; it was a good ounce.’ Treviso, Italy Newly-weds smash Ferrari on way to reception A bride and groom took a crash course in surviving marital strife - when they smashed the £130,000 Ferrari Testarossa they’d hired to drive themselves to their reception. The couple had spent £500 to rent the 180mph Testarossa for an hour so they could arrive at the bash in style at Treviso, northern Italy. But after going just a few yards in the supercar - which does 0-60 in under six seconds - the groom swerved off the road straight into a traffic light, virtually writing off the luxury motor. “They had to sign over a £20,000 insurance deposit on the car - and they probably won’t be getting any change from it,” said one police officer investigating the crash, who added insult to injury by fining the groom £50 for damaging public property. Insurers say repairs could cost £60,000. “Neither of them had been drinking but with a car this powerful a small mistake can become very costly,” added the officer.

DEAR MARY, With the football World Cup upon us, I feel the need to share with you a most personal quirk related to football, as it is a real problem. I am a Scotsman living in Thailand, and I love football. I can’t get enough of it. However, as Scotland never qualify for major tournaments, I never get to see them playing here on TV. When I speak to my countrymen here, they have all picked a country to follow at the tournament to give them some added interest, normally with some vague Scottish connection (last World Cup most chose Trinidad and Tobago because they had a player called Jason Scotland), and failing that just support the team that plays England. The thing is, I like England; I want them to do well in the tournament, but how can I possibly admit this to my fellow countrymen? I’ll be shunned, made fun of, ridiculed and probably forced to eat haggis. I am so worried that I’ll be watching the tournament with my friends and England score and I won’t be able to contain myself. What can I do? Jock, Cha Am
Dear Jock, Of all the problems I have ever had to deal with, this one, without exception, is the worst I have ever read. I honestly don’t know how you continue to function with this weighing on you. You need immediate therapy, and I suggest the very first thing you do is to get immersion therapy, which in this case involves getting DVDs of Braveheart and the 1978 World Cup match between Scotland and the Netherlands, some deep fried Mars Bars, a case of McEwans and a couple of bottles of Scotch and spend at least 24 hours watching eating and drinking. You might also want to add a couple of Billy Connolly concerts to the list. The next stage is aversion therapy, which should follow quickly after; get hold of a compilation of England penalty shootouts, I think its called ‘The Southgate Files’, old footage of the England v USA match at the World Cup in 1950 plus the Argentina ‘Hand Of God’ match, a cask of Courage Best Bitter and a loop recording of ‘Football’s Coming Home’; subject yourself to 24 hours of that and I believe you’ll be cured. Brilliant midfielder Steven Gerrard shocked the England camp this morning when he chucked the captain’s armband straight back into Fabio Capello’s face. “Sorry Fabio”, said Gerrard. “The England captaincy is jinxed. CELEBRATIONS marking the departure of Rafael Benitez have been spotted by astronauts on board the International Space Station. Crew members said the Liverpool street parties appeared as a spot of brightlycoloured euphoria as the city took on the appearance of a giant smiley face. Benitez’s reign as Liverpool manager ended as it began, with the club languishing in the league and the Spaniard riding around on a camel telling everybody he was the King of Narnia. His personality quirks, such as insisting the groundsman refer to him as ‘Mr Cheeks’ and spending every Thursday leaping into the air to try and grab the sun, had been tolerated by the board as they realised no real football manager would want to live in Liverpool. The search is now on for Benitez’s replacement, but club director Christian Purslow admitted it would be difficult to find somebody with the same determination, ambition and collection of Action Man figures dressed up as members of Genesis. Fan Wayne Hayes said he planned to celebrate all day, adding: “Don’t tell anyone I’ve been sprinting down Church Street with my mate on my shoulders, will you? I’ll be getting drunk for the foreseeable future and I’m going to need all the incapacity benefit I can get my thieving little hands on.”
