The Gold Rush

hua hin, thailand It was a defining feature of 19th century America and Australia, and to many it would seem to be a thing of the past, but rumours are emerging of a modern day gold rush on the outskirts of Hua Hin. While the prospectors themselves are obviously keen to play down the idea that a rich gold seam may have been discovered in the area, the sight of pick ups loaded with people heading off to the west armed with pans, picks and shovels suggests there may be ‘gold in them thar hills’. Certainly some foreigners are keen to investigate the claims, and we spoke to an American expat, Tony Hallmark, who is a self proclaimed expert in panning for gold, and he told us that gold fever had struck among the locals about 50 kilometres west of Hua Hin, although he was obviously coy about revealing the exact location. He said, ‘There is a great deal of excitement there, and everybody

who can is heading to the spot where the first gold was apparently discovered; the local shops have completely sold out of metal pans and there is a complete frenzy there.’ In these times of economic hardship, it is clear that people are desperate to grab any chance of riches, and gold is already a prized item in Thailand anyway. Another foreigner we met, Chuck Chaplin, intimated that his wife’s family have moved completely to be near the site, but apparently there are already problems brewing as

prospectors compete for what are seen as the best positions, and many fear fighting could break out. Mr Chaplin, resplendent with his bowler hat and walking stick, was reticent about speaking to us, and quickly waddled off when we pressed him for the precise location, but it seems to be only a matter of time before more discover it. AWOL cannot confirm that the stories are true and suspects that there is more chance of England being reinstated at the World Cup than finding any gold, but good luck!

The Bars Strike Back?

hua hin, thailand Following AWOL’s front page story last week, which reported on the apparent heavy handed treatment of businesses making minor transgressions of licensing laws, it seems that a movement is afoot to get some sort of organisation formed that could try to help the situation. AWOL has received several emails concernng the story, and it must be noted that most of these were from business owners who had obtained the relevant licence to show the World Cup; however a common theme was that they only discovered the need for such a licence by chance, and it does not appear as if any concerted effort was made to ensure affected businesses were informed about the licence. Given that this appears to be a new phenomenon (as in previous World Cups or major sporting events have not required a special licence) this seems extremely unfair, and combined with other requirements, such as the need for several licences to sell alcohol, a plethora of licences to play music and the continual visits by the various officials investigating these requirements, the need for an organisation that can inform, advise and represent businesses here is urgently needed. Most businesses do not want to break the law, and want to cooperate with the authorities, but the poor availability of clear information in both Thai and English, combined with an apparent desire to keep everyone in the dark, makes things very difficult for everyone. We are sure the people of Hua Hin would much rather see the police involved in clamping down on dangerous driving, or the regular spates of muggings and robberies, than pursuing businesses who are trying to keep within the law, and provide employment for many local people. If you have a business in the area and want to get involved in some form of organisation, why not send us an email to info@awolonline.net? When there is more news on this issue we can put you in contact with others who are forming it, as well as reporting on it in these pages. Equally, if you have witnessed or been affected by what you think is unfair treatment by the police or authorities, why not tell us about it? This sort of information would be very useful in setting up any organisation and help in deciding how best to deal with these situations. Good luck to all involved in trying to set up this organisation, and let us hope that it helps clarify future situations and improve relations with the authorities.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is In the nick of time Just in time; at the precise moment.

The English language gives us the opportunity to be ‘in’ many things the doldrums, the offing, the pink; we can even be down in the dumps. With all of these expressions it is pretty easy to see what they refer to, but what or where is the ‘nick of time’? It may not be immediately obvious what the nick of time is, but we do know what it means to be in it, i.e. arriving at the last propitious moment. Prior to the 16th century there was another expression used to convey that meaning - ‘pudding time’. This relates to the fact that pudding was the dish served first at mediaeval mealtimes. To arrive at pudding time was to arrive at the start of the meal, just in time to eat. Pudding was then a savoury dish - a form of sausage or haggis. Pudding time is first referred to in print in John Heywood’s invaluable glossary ‘A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue, 1546’: This geare comth euen in puddyng time ryghtly. That seems a perfectly serviceable idiom, so why did the Tudors change it to ‘the nick of time’? The motivation appears to be the desire to express a finer degree of timing than the vague ‘around the beginning of the meal’. The nick that was being referred to was a notch or small cut and was synonymous with precision. Such notches were used on ‘tally’ sticks to measure or keep score. Also, during the 16th century, pudding began being used as the name of sweet dishes and they were usually served at the end of the meal. As this trend continued ‘pudding time’ being used to mean ‘in good time’ made less and less sense. Note: the expressions ‘keeping score’ and ‘keeping tally’ derive from this and so do ‘stocks’ and ‘shares’, which refer to the splitting of such sticks (stocks) along their length and sharing the two matching halves as a record of a deal. If someone is now said to be ‘in the nick’ the English would expect him to be found in prison, the Scots would picture him in the valley between two hills and Australians would imagine him to be naked. To Shakespeare and his contemporaries if someone were ‘in (or at, or upon) the (very) nick’ they were in the precise place at the precise time. Watches and the strings of musical instruments were adjusted to precise pre-marked nicks to keep them in proper order. Ben Jonson makes a reference to that in the play Pans Anniversary, circa 1637: For to these, there is annexed a clock-keeper, a grave person, as Time himself, who is to see that they all keep time to a nick. Arthur Golding gave what is likely to be the first example of the use of ‘nick’ in this context in his translation of Ovid’s Metamorphosis, 1565: Another thing cleane overthwart there commeth in the nicke: The Ladie Semell great with childe by Jove as then was quicke. The ‘time’ in ‘the nick of time’ is rather superfluous, as nick itself refers to time. The first example of the use of the phrase as we now know it comes in Arthur Day’s Festivals, 1615: Even in this nicke of time, this very, very instant.

Weird News Moscow, russia

Russian official throws £200,000 from car during police chase A Russian fisheries official suspected of accepting bribes chucked 10 million roubles (over £212,000) from his car after a police chase and a crash on a busy Moscow highway. While being chased by police, Federal Fisheries Agency official Boris Simonov crashed his Cadillac on Friday and frantically flung 10 million roubles into the wind, local media reported. The state-run First Channel television showed scores of large-denomination rouble notes being collected by police beside a thoroughfare in south-central Moscow. A spokesman for Russia’s Investigative Committee said Simonov’s boss, Roman Postnikov, who oversaw two Moscow rivers, was arrested on suspicion of forging a contract that allowed a fishing firm operate without the proper documents. Both fishery officials will be jailed for two months pending further investigation, the committee said. President Dmitry Medvedev has vowed to tackle Russia’s long standing corruption issues, but analysts say little has changed since he took office in May 2008.

bavaria, Germany Burglar meets his match in wrestler A blundering burglar soon saw the error of his ways – after breaking into the home of a wrestler. Lee Christie cried ‘Oh s***’ when confronted by 127kg (20st) Adam Kalinowski – then began sobbing as the big daddy held him in a ‘Nelson’ headlock for 20 minutes until police arrived. Now the crook is grappling with a two-year jail sentence. ‘I came home and the door was broken,’ said Mr Kalinowski. ‘I saw the man, I mean, this guy was big and I did not know what he was doing there or what was in his bag, maybe a knife. Maybe it was the adrenaline but I was not scared because this is my house, my castle, as you say in England.’ Mr Kalinowski, who used to wrestle in his native Poland but is now a factory worker in Coventry, said Christie pushed him. ‘I gave him a kick in the stomach and he slowed down,’ the 37-year-old added. ‘I know how to wrestle, I like fighting sports, so I got him in a Nelson. He was trying to get up so I had to punch him in the head. He was crying, saying, “Leave me alone” but he was lucky I did not kill him because of how I felt at the time. He was saying he needed money for narcotics. He must have been desperate.’ Christie, 38, was jailed at Coventry Crown Court over the break-in at the house in Earlsdon, Coventry, on April 19.

One of them says to the bartender, “Don’t mind us, we”re joined at the hip. I’m John, he’s Jim. Two Molson Canadian beers please.” The bartender, feeling slightly awkward, tries to make polite conversation while pouring the beers. “Been on holiday yet, lads?” “Off to England next month,” says John. “We go to England every year, hire a car, and drive for miles, don’t we, Jim?” Jim agrees. “Ah, England!” says the bartender. “Wonderful Country ... the history, the beer, the culture...” “Nah, we don’t like that British crap,” says John. “Hamburgers and Molson’s beer, that’s us, eh, Jim? And we can’t stand the English; they’re so arrogant and rude, not civil and polite like us Canadians.” “So why keep going to England?” asks the bartender. “It’s the only chance Jim gets to drive.” COWBOY A tough old cowboy from South Texas counseled his grandson that if he wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gun powder on his oatmeal every morning. Your Problems SOLVED

Relationship woes? Bar girl blues? Sexual deviant? Send your problem to Mary Ann Cotton on submissions@awolonline.net

DEAR MARY, My boyfriend doesn’t care about me any more. Two days ago when he was round here he accidentally forgot to put sugar in my tea and so I got really angry and swore at him, hit him with an oven glove (which was on fire at the time), smacked him in the face with a wooden pestle and threw a chair at him. Then I tipped him out of a first floor window. Then he tried to get back in the house and I blasted him with a shotgun. He ran away and hasn’t been in touch since. Don’t you think that if he really cared, he’d be trying to contact me? I just feel so sad and rejected. He used to say I had anger management issues, but I’m ****** if I know what he’s talking about. Can you help? Sweetness and Light, Thonburi

Dear Sweetness, I think all women can empathise with the position you find yourself in. And of course we all know that your boyfriend has got another woman stashed away who he has now run to and is probably bonking away like mad as I write this, the cheating animal that he must be. Well I say what’s good for the goose is good for the gander (or is it the other way round?); I’m sure you know his favourite watering hole, so I suggest that you go there and as soon as you see the inconsiderate love snake, you grab the nearest man and start snogging him, and all the better if it is his best mate; for added effect you could declare loudly that the two of you are just going out back for a quick shag, and then drag the bloke you’ve been snogging off to do the deed, preferably near a window. At the very least you’ll get a bit of rumpy pumpy, but it is sure to have your man crawling back begging for forgiveness. Just make sure you have reloaded your shotgun, just in case though.

World Cup 2010

World Cup fixtures (all times/dates Thailand) Friday, 2 July 2010 Quarter Final Netherlands v Brazil, 21:00 Our second guessing was correct, and this has all the hallmarks of a great game. Brazil are a very efficient team with of course some magic, while the Dutch are a more flowing side. Another tough call but we suspect the Brazilians will do enough to leave the Dutch rueing a missed opportunity. Saturday, 3 July 2010 Quarter Final Uruguay v Ghana, 01:30 The Ghanaians are likely to get the mass of support from the locals here, keen to see an African team progress. Two good teams and we can see this going to extra time, possibly penalties. We have stuck a pin in and have chosen Ghana to get to the semi final. Argentina v Germany, 21:00 Having predicted a classic for Germany’s last game, we are loathe to do so again, but once more it has all the requirements; a fierce rivalry because of previous encounters and two sharply contrasting styles. Both teams have had fortunate refereeing decisions so both may start to feel as if their name is on the Cup, but we think Argentina have just too much quality, and more importantly, a much better defence. Sunday, 4 July 2010 Quarter Final Paraguay v Spain 01:30 Paraguay only just squeaked through against Japan, and we think that tells us this is as far as they can go. Spain are still improving, and overcame tough opposition in the last round in the shape of Portugal. We think this will be a fairly smooth passage to the semi final for Spain. Wednesday, 7 July 2010 Semi Final Uruguay/Ghana v Netherlands/ Brazil, 01:30 Second guessing time again, and

we think the likely match up is Ghana v Brazil. The Brazilians have done their usual thing at the World Cup, and that is to get better as the tournament goes on; however Ghana have shown similar fortitude and this is an intriguing game. We doubt there will be many goals as Ghana will probably set out to frustrate Brazil and be quite physical. However in the end, as we have said before, you can’t bet against Brazil, they just seem to be made for these occasions.

Can David Villa (above) fire Spain all the way to the final? Thursday, 8 July 2010 Semi Final Argentina/Germany v Paraguay /Spain, 01:30 Likely to be Argentina v Spain we think, and another classic if it is. Some fabulously talented individuals in both teams, but also some cynical cheats unfortunately, so we expect there to be a lot of cards being shown and controversy if this is the semi. Tough call on who would win this, but we have a sneaking feeling this match could be the one where Maradona’s

erratic management style fails. So if our guessing is correct, it is looking like a Brazil versus Spain final on 12th July.

World Cup Fantasy League

Below is the top six in the ‘AWOL in South Africa’ mini league, and the standings are up to and including the round of 16 final games. Just three rounds left in the competition now but still time for anyone to win it - it just needs a star performance by one player to leap up the table. However lost cafe have taken a commanding lead at the top of our mini league, and are 2191st in the overall standings, so a big well done to them so far. Video Technology Confirms: England Are Very Bad At Football

london, england ENGLAND are heading home from the World Cup today after state-of-the-art video technology showed the ball crossing their goal line many, many times. As questions were raised over why the Uruguayan officials had spotted all four German goals, the specially positioned cameras around the Bloemfontein Stadium confirmed that England’s 2010 squad will forever be remembered as the ‘team that never was’. The use of television has been a source of controversy in the sport, but experts insist it offers a foolproof method for determining whether a team is good at football or whether it is simply a collection of absurdly over-compensated, second-rate commercial brands with ghastly, vulgar wives, locked in a sado-masochistic relationship with a cretinous media that merely reflects a society that has taken its natural intelligence, its sense of perspective and its values and violently drowned them all in a bucket of urine. Professor Henry Brubaker of the Institute for Studies said: “The

The fourth German ‘goal’; the German player stands on the goal line to ensure the officials can see that the ball is over the line. technology is very complex and involves cathode tubes, a large glass screen and pretty much an entire roll of tinfoil. “The operator sits in front of the screen and if he or she sees one set of players concede goal after goal after goal after goal, the video images then help them to decide whether or not those players are good at football.” Back home England fans vented their fury at the technology, as Paul the Psychic Octopus predicted Fabio Capello would soon be

receiving a cheque for £12m and moving to a country where people can understand what he’s saying. Roy Hobbs, a flurry of opinions from Stevenage, said: “Alan Hansen kept going on about how it could have been 20 or even 25nil and that if he had done that at Liverpool, Bob Paisley would have slashed him across the arse with a machete. “But I think it could easily have been 70 or even 290-nil. Unless of course Lampard’s goal had counted, in which case England would have won 14-2.” Nathan Muir, from Hatfield, added: “Not a good day. And after Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton in the grand prix, I half expected to come home and find my missus having a dirty bath with the lead singer of Boney M.” Meanwhile, central defender John Terry finally arrived back in England’s 18-yard box last night only to find that everyone else had gone home. Apparently he had been distracted by the sheer beauty of some of the German fans. He eventually got out of the stadium after climbing over a fence.
