Life Is Cheap Asia Times Editor murdered for just ฿2517
hua hin, thailand On the night of Tuesday 17th August, Allen Quicke was murdered in his home, having been stabbed seven times and beaten with a baseball bat. Allen was the Editor-in-chief of Asia Times Online. A 24 year old Thai man was arrested and confessed to the murder, and on Saturday 21st August; Ekopod Gaopeng, from Nakhon Si Ayuthaya (pictured), reenacted the crime for police and reporters. He had been working at the house next door to Mr Quicke’s home just off Naebkahart Road, and told police that he thought that there would be money and valuables to steal from the house. At around 9.45pm he armed himself with a knife and climbed over a fence but when he entered the house Mr Quicke confronted him and a struggle ensued, which ended when the murderer, known as Ek,
Nokia mobile phone, before fleeing the scene. Mr Quicke’s body was discovered the next morning when his maid arrived to clean the house. An obituary has been published on Asia Times Online which covers Allen Quicke’s career, achievements and life far better than we can. Our sincerest condolences to Allen’s family, friends and colleagues. A cremation ceremony is being held at the Hua Hin Temple between 3 4pm on Saturday 28th August. brutally stabbed and beat the 57 year old. Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell UK Sausages, Ham, you how it came about. Bacon, Pies, Teas etc. This week it is.. Once in a blue Call 087 155 7737 or 089 985 7473 moon Very rarely. There are two likely answers for the origin of this phrase; 1. It’s the second full moon in a calendar month; 2. It’s when the moon looks blue. Let’s start with 2. Very occasionally, the moon actually does appear to be blue. This sometimes occurs after a volcanic eruption, like that of Krakatao in 1883. Dust particles in the atmosphere are normally of a size to diffract blue light, making the moon appear reddish at sunset. Larger volcanic dust particles diffract red light, making the moon appear bluish. Tempting as it is to suppose that something that happens very rarely, and which is mentioned by name in a phrase that means ‘very rarely’, is the source of the phrase, it probably isn’t. Actual examples of the moon appearing blue would in fact be the exception that proves the rule, as the ‘blue moon’ was originally something that was considered not rare but impossible. The two notions, ‘a blue moon’ and ‘the moon is made of green cheese’, were synonyms for absurdity, like ‘pigs might fly’. The ‘blue moon’ expression with the ‘impossibility’ meaning is old and dates back to mediaeval England. For example, a work by William Barlow, the Bishop of Chichester, the Treatyse of the Buryall of the Masse, 1528, included a sarcastic reference to a blue moon: ‘Yf they saye the mone is belewe, We must beleve that it is true.’ John Frith’s essay A pistle to the christen reader, 1529, included: “They wold make men beleue... that ye mone is made of grene chese.” Only after several centuries, and after the original usage had long since died out, did ‘once in a blue moon’ come to mean something that didn’t happen very often. The earliest example found is in Pierce Egan’s Real Life in London, 1821: ‘How’s Harry and Ben? - haven’t seen you this blue moon.’ Moving on to answer No. 1. To explain that one we have to follow a long trail of etymological research, leading back to an American amateur astronomer called James Pruett. Since 1819, The Maine Farmers’ Almanac has listed the dates of forthcoming blue moons. The compilers of the almanac had their own definition of what blue moons are. This derives from the fact that lunar and calendar months aren’t quite the same and that some years have 13 full moons. In a typical 12-moon year, the moons all have names, like the familiar ‘Harvest Moon’, ‘Hunter’s Moon’ etc. In a 13-moon year the extra moon is, somewhat arbitrarily, deemed to be the third moon in the season that has four rather than the usual three, and is called the ‘Blue Moon’. The aforementioned James Pruett read an edition of the Maine Farmers’ Almanac, but misinterpreted the system and printed the ‘second full moon in a month’ version in a 1946 edition of the Sky & Telescope Magazine. For some reason, probably because it ended up being printed as an answer in an early version of Trivial Pursuit, Pruett’s version has gained currency. Two full moons in a month isn’t really all that rare an occurrence it happens approximately every three years. Despite it being both inaccurate and coined by mistake, Pruett’s No. 2 answer is now widely accepted as a definition of ‘blue moon’.

World’s longest traffic jam – 10 days and counting The World’s longest traffic jam – in China – has now reached the 10-day mark. Roadworks on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou highway in Huailai, in north China’s Hebei province, have caused a tailback that stretches to a mind-boggling, radiatortesting 60 miles. The irony is that the roadworks are in place to alleviate congestion caused by thousands of coal trucks thundering into the city. On the plus side, the giant gridlock has led to brisk business for roadside sellers, who’ve been peddling eggs, water and cigarettes to the frustrated drivers. MORE: Five of the funniest tail-backs But on the downside, the stationary vehicles have made easy pickings for thieves, who’ve been plundering them as their drivers sleep – including siphoning off petrol - according to The Inner Mongolia Morning Post. Bochum, Germany Polish man shot in head realises five years later A Polish man in Germany took five years to realise that he had been shot in the head, as he was drunk when it happened. The 35-year-old in Bochum, west Germany, visited 6
doctors to have a lump removed from his head, assuming it was a cyst that had caused him recurring pains. He was then left baffled by police claiming that they found a .22 calibre bullet in the back of his head (see x-ray above). Although the man has a hazy recollection of the events, he stated he remembers receiving a blow to the head around midnight at a New Year’s party ‘in 2004 or 2005’, though he can’t remember because he was ‘very drunk’, according to a police spokesman. ‘He told us he remembered having a sore head, but that he wasn’t really one for going to the doctor,’ the spokesman said. Local police aren’t treating the incident as suspicious, as they believe another reveller fired the gun towards the sky in celebration. ‘It may have been a shot fired up in the air which entered his head on the way down.’ The man is expected to be released from hospital later this week, after having the bullet removed last week.

Dear Norman, I have received many similar letters over the last few weeks, and I have to say that while I understand the worry caused by recent events, you only have to look at other parts of Thailand and the world to know that you are better off here. I can’t think of many places where the over 50’s are better catered for, except for medical care, schooling for their children, legal services and reliable domestic staff, but apart from that it is still a dreamland for the middle aged and older man who likes playing golf and meaningless relationships with bar girls. Granted the finances might be a bit tight at the moment with the inexplicably strong baht but most foreigners who retire here are so wealthy that shouldn’t matter a jot should it? Thats what my Thai friends tell me anyway, and they are normally right on the money. I suggest that you find yourself a nice Thai girl, build her a big house and just roll with the punches, while making sure you have a nice fat life insurance policy - that always gives peace of mind doesn’t it?

Flintoff comeback? Still has role to play this season, insist breweries
lancashire, england News that Andrew Flintoff’s latest comeback from a long standing hangover has been delayed once again, has been met with huge disappointment from licensed victuallers around the country. Flintoff (pictured right), who has never fully recovered from the hangover he sustained during the 2005 Ashes series against Australia, was advised by Lancashire’s medical team to give it a few more days before taking his sunglasses off and exposing himself to daylight once again. The news prompted fears that unless the hangover clears up in time, the former England captain might not make the final drinking squad when the team leaves for Australia in November. It was hoped that with a fully fit Flintoff leading the celebrations in the England dressing room once again, breweries could forget any worries about a double-dip recession and look forward to a dramatic increase in trade with record sales triggered by the winter tour down under. The FTSE 100 was quick to respond with shares in Marstons and Heineken reaching a record
low, before rallying slightly on one of the worst days trading since Black Wednesday in 1992. “It’s just a precaution,” Flintoff told reporters, “everybody knows I’ve picked up a few niggling hangovers over the last 12 months but this one’s nothing to worry about.” “Unfortunately, once you’ve had a series of hangovers like I have, and you get to my age, it takes a while for the body to get over it.” “I’ve done a few light pub lunches and thrown some extra barbecues at home. If there are no complications
there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be back hitting the bars and night clubs for six towards the end of August.” “Clearly my days of drinking solidly over five days are over, the knees are just not up to it any more, but I still feel I’ve got something to offer the team in the shorter versions of any drinking game.” Experts have warned that Flintoff should focus on the shorter forms of drinking, in the hope of extending his career beyond this year. One physio told us, “He can still hold his own in a session on Mad Dog Twenty20, but he just can’t hit the top shelf like he used to.” If he can stay fit, Flintoff hopes to finish the season with a bumper payday having already signed up for the IPA league in India. When asked if he meant he would be playing in the IPL league, a bemused Flintoff replied, “No, I’ve signed up for the IPA league… Indian Pale Ale.” “They’re day/night matches, we’ve got 200 barrels to knock off before close of play or we have to come back and finish it off the next day. If that doesn’t keep me in the runs, then nothing will.”
