First AWOL Survey results summary

hua hin, thailand The First AWOL Survey was something of an experiment for us, but we have been gratified by the response and intrigued by the results. A big thank you to all who participated in the survey, and you may be glad to know that there are future surveys in the pipeline. This survey though has revealed some interesting facts, although the survey size may not be large enough to be able to definitively extrapolate conclusions about the Hua Hin area’s expat community. Firstly the demographics revealed by those taking the survey was heavily male dominated, with nearly 89% of respondents being male. Over 70% of respondents were in the 46 to 65 age group, and half of them originating in the UK; the next largest groups were USA (9%), Ireland (6%), Australia, Finland, Netherlands and Switzerland (4%). Nearly 65% of respondents live

A pie chart permanently in Thailand, while of those who don’t nearly 44% spend between 6 and 12 weeks here. Over 57% of all respondents have their own house, villa or condo while about 22% rent a property. The most popular areas to live are South Hua Hin (30%), Central Hua Hin ( 20%)and West Hua Hin (16%), accounting for 66% of the total. More than 60% gave AWOL the thumbs up, but 32% felt we could do better, so we are working on it! The most liked section of the paper is the front page story, followed by Area 555, Weather/Currencies/

Information, Hua Hin Live and Page 3. A heart warming 95% rated the AWOL website as average or better, with over 50% saying it was good or excellent. However over a third of the responders have had problems getting hold of the printed AWOL, and we are looking into ways to deal with this, but please contact us directly to info@awolonline.net if you are having problems or have any distribution suggestions.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell UK Sausages, Ham, you how it came about. Bacon, Pies, Teas etc. This week it is.. Hat trick Call 087 155 7737 or 089 985 7473 A series of three consecutive successes, in sport or some other area of activity. The sports pages of UK newspapers have been full of hat tricks recently, as there has been a spate of them at the start of the 2010 Premiership Football season. Didier Drogba, playing for Chelsea, narrowly missed out on being the first Premiership player to score a hat trick of hat tricks, i.e. three goals in each of three consecutive games. Those reports refer to players ‘scoring a hat trick’, but the first hat tricks weren’t scored, they were ‘taken’. So, where does the term ‘hat trick’ come from? The first sport to be associated with the term was cricket. From the 1870s onward, ‘hat tricks’ are mentioned in cricketing literature; for example, this piece from James Lillywhite’s Cricketers’ Annual 1877: Having on one occasion taken six wickets in seven balls, thus performing the hat-trick successfully. While that doesn’t define what a hat trick is exactly, the arithmeticians amongst you will have noticed that, to take six wickets in seven balls, a bowler has to take at least three consecutive wickets. The theory goes - and there aren’t sufficient records to be precise about this - that if a bowler dismissed three batsmen in a row, a collection was taken and the proceeds were used to buy him a new hat. Either that, or a hat was passed round and the bowler trousered the proceeds. That explains ‘hat’, but why ‘trick’ exactly? The feat is difficult and is quite a rarity in cricket, there having been only 37 hat tricks in Test cricket history, but ‘trick’ doesn’t seem the obvious word for it. What may well have influenced the choice of words was the sudden popularity of stage conjurers’ ‘Hat Tricks’, which immediately preceded the first use of the term on the cricket field. The magician’s Hat Trick, where items, typically rabbits, bunches of flowers, streams of flags etc., are pulled out of a top hat, is well-known to us now but was a novelty in the 1860s. It isn’t known who invented the trick. The first reference found to it in print is from Punch magazine, 1858: Professor Willjabber Derby’s Clever Hat-Trick. Wiljada Freckel was a clever German conjuror, who produced an infinity of objects from a hat. The trick is accomplished by either using a top hat with a false lid or by sleight of hand. It became something of a fad in Victorian England and, while ‘hat trick’ wasn’t seen in print before 1858, the term appears many times in newspapers throughout the rest of the 19th century. When cricketers in the 1870s wanted to give a name to an impressive achievement that involved a hat, what more obvious name than the currently pervading expression ‘hat trick’? The term was also appropriated from the variety stage for the political stage, where Victorian MPs were said to have ‘done a hat trick’ whenever they reserved their seat in the House of Commons by leaving their top hat on it.

Weird News swansea, wales

Boots loyalty card for ‘Dr Suicide Bomber’ forces store to apologise A Boots card made out in the name of ‘Dr A Suicide Bomber’, which was sent to a customer by mistake, has forced the high street giant to say sorry. The offending loyalty card was sent to Andrew Adams, 63, of Swansea who says it was ‘unbelievable’ that the company issued the card. Mr Adams, a retired lorry driver and father-of-four, claims he hadn’t applied for the card and he isn’t a regular shopper at the pharmacy chain. Mr Adams said: ‘I’m not a doctor and I’m certainly not a suicide bomber. I could not believe it when it arrived. It’s unbelievable it ever got through their system. I spoke to their head office and they were very apologetic. I very seldom go there - only if I need a prescription that can’t be fulfilled by my local pharmacy.’ Boots have sincerely apologised for the error. A company spokesperson said: ‘We are very sorry for any upset that Mr Adams has experienced and we are liaising directly with him. As soon as we were aware of this incident, we immediately triggered a full and detailed investigation into how this appalling hoax was able to occur. This has included a comprehensive audit and a review of the systems in place to prevent such behaviours taking place again. We have 6

technology in place to prevent offensive terminology and potential fraudulent names being used.’ The news follows a recent instance of Virgin Media addressing a customer as ‘Mr Illegal Immigrant’. Ozrem, serbia World Testicle Cooking Championships are a ball The seventh annual World Testicle Cooking Championships have taken place in a remote mountain village in Serbia, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘ball games’. Spectators looked on as teams of chefs prepared a range of bull, boar, camel, ostrich and even kangaroo testicles. ‘This festival is all about fun, food and bravery,’ said Ljubomir Erovic, the Serbian chef and testiclecooking specialist who organizes the festival (and has published a testicle cookery book.) Testicles - or, as they’re primly called in Serbia, ‘white kidneys’ - are believed in the Balkans to help boost men’s libido. ‘The bulls’ testicles are the best, goulash style,’ said last year’s winner Zoltan Levai, stirring a metal pot heated by a wood fire and filled with vegetables and large testicles that he said were provided from a staterun slaughter house. The festival also includes dishes like testicle pizza and testicles in bechamel sauce, flavored with a variety of herbs found in the region.

Three visitors Three visitors to Royal Hua Hin Golf Club decided to join forces for a game but, of course, they first introduced themselves to each other. “My name is Avram Solomon”, said the bearded gent, “but I’m not the Rabbi.” “My name is Attila, but I’m not the Hun”, said the quietly spoken youth wearing glasses. My n-n-n-name is M-M-M-Mary, said the shy young woman, “and I’m not a v-v-v-v-v-very good player.” Want some chicken? A man was driving along a freeway when he noticed a chicken running along side his car. He was amazed to see the chicken keeping up with him because he was doing 50 MPH. He accelerated to 60 and the chicken stayed right next to him. He speeded up to 75 MPH and the chicken passed him up. The man noticed the chicken had three legs. So, he followed to chicken down a road and ended up at a farm. He got out of his car and saw that all the chickens had three legs. He asked the farmer “What’s up with these chickens?” The farmer said “Well, everybody likes chicken legs. I bred a three legged bird. I’m going to be a millionaire.” The man asked him how they tasted. The farmer said “Don’t know, haven’t caught one yet.”

Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 Love flickers, love fades, and love can gutter and die, but love is still better than those bloody compact fluorescent bulbs. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 You claim to be a champion of truth and beauty, but you still can’t name three poems by Dean Young. Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Future archaeologists will find your desiccated skeleton exactly where you starved, midway between two 64-ounce bags of Lays. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 You may be heartbroken, but you can no more stop him from leaving than you can stop the toaster from falling into your bathtub Thursday. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 It’s time you learned to treat people as individuals instead of mathematically predictable members of an aggregate set, no matter how well that works. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 On a dark night this week, the men in lab coats will once more come for you, but it’s just because they left one of their lab coats at your place last time.

Your Problems SOLVED

Relationship woes? Bar girl blues? Sexual deviant? Send your problem to Mary Ann Cotton on submissions@awolonline.net

This week we are once again treated to the problem solving talents of Mary’s young niece, Betsy Jane DEAR MARY, The other day, I was driving to Big Kiang to pick up a new Super Woofer for my Mitsubishi Lancer and I happened to stop at a traffic lights next to a rather attractive lady in a red Honda Jazz. I immediately deduced she was probably a slut because she was listening to Lady GaGa at full volume, so I attempted to engage her in some idle chit-chat on the off chance it would lead to some roadside hanky panky. Unfortunately, as soon as I’d revved the engine and sexily mouthed the words ‘how about it?’, she threw back her head and laughed like an evil banshee, and then accelerated off into the distance. Do you think I’ve lost my mojo, or was that woman just playing hard to get? Graham, Cha Am

Dear Graham, If you really want to be friends with girls, you’d better get used to the idea that they don’t really care about fast cars or powerful speakers, or even how many worms you’ve collected in a jar. If you want to retrieve your mojo, may I suggest you learn a few skipping rhymes, or how to play hopscotch, or even how to make rose-petal and grass perfume. Also, don’t mock the fact that we like to brush the hair of sinister plastic babies, and pretend to eat invisible cakes and drink invisible tea served from a plastic dinner service. And don’t forget that what we hate most of all is little boys showing off like idiots and trying to impress us with their ridiculous toys. You need to get it into your head that until you lose the macho attitude, you won’t be invited to play in the Wendy House.

Premier League D-Day Transfer window slams shut until January 2011 england The final day of the transfer window is often quite dramatic, but this time around it has definitely been less so, although Stoke and Sunderland (and possibly Liverpool) fans might beg to differ. Sunderland have splashed the cash on Asamoah Gyan, the Ghanaian striker, while Stoke signed no less than four players on deadline day - Salif Diao, Jermaine Pennant, Marc Wilson and Eidur Gudjohnsen. Liverpool filled a hole and created some new ones in their squad, as Paul Konchesky arrived from Fulham, while Alex Kacaniklic and Lauri Dalla Valle went the other way; the Reds also loaned out a couple of their fringe players. Some late deals were still awaiting approval at press time, including Spurs dramatic bid for Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid (right, with wife Sylvie) and West Ham’s much less dramatic swoop for Lars Jacobsen from Blackburn. Last day deals are listed below, while deals made in the rest of August are on page 23. Transfers Jean Beausejour [Club America - Birmingham]

Loans Joseph Yobo [Everton - Fenerbahce] Marcus Bent [Birmingham - Wolves] Felipe Caicedo [Man. City - Levante] Tom Cleverley [Man. Utd. - Wigan] Nabil El Zhar [Liverpool - PAOK] E Gudjohnsen [Monaco - Stoke] Alexander Hleb [Barcelona - Birmingham] Sunderland’s record signing Emiliano Insua [Liverpool Asamoah Gyan hints at what - Galatasaray] attracted him to the city Stipe Pletikosa [Spartak Moscow DJ Campbell [Leicester - Blackpool] - Tottenham] Lauri Dalla Valle [Liverpool - Rodrigo [Benfica - Bolton] Fulham] Player exchange Armand Traore [Arsenal Franco Di Santo [Chelsea - Wigan] - Juventus] Salif Diao [unattached - Stoke] Asamoah Gyan [Rennes Sunderland] £13m Martin Jiranek [Spartak Moscow - Birmingham] Alex Kacaniklic [Liverpool Fulham] Player exchange Paul Konchesky [Fulham Liverpool] Player exchange Jermaine Pennant [Real Zaragoza - Stoke] Matt Phillips [Wycombe Blackpool] £325,000 Spurs fans don’t really care if Robinho [Man. City - AC Milan] Van der Vaart (above) signs Marc Wilson [Portsmouth - Stoke] as long as his missus does
