Immigration Migrating Again New home at restaurant on Canal Road
hua hin, thailand Just 18 months after the Hua Hin Immigration offices relocated from thier original site in Soi 102 to their current offices in Soi 23, plans are well underway for a move to another new location on Chonlapathan Road, more commonly called the Canal (Klong) Road. The Three Girls (Sam Poo Ying) restaurant has been named as the destination, and this is roughly the same distance from the town centre as the current site, but with much better access and parking, and it should also have much more spacious offices - anyone who has visited the Soi 23 office will be familiar with the cramped conditions both the officers and foreigners have to contend with. The move is expected to be completed sometime in October,
is almost certain that they have already moved to the new location. One unanswered question is whether this is another temporary move, as there have been rumours for some time that a new permanent home will be or is being constructed, but either way it appears that each move made so far has been to the benefit of most people.

The advice from the immigration office is that if you are due to see them around that time, to call them on 032 522 656 (the phone number at Soi 23) - if there is no answer or that number does not work then it

Humans seem to have the urge to improve things. Prehistoric hand-axes were made by repeatedly chipping small flakes off pebbles of flint with other hard objects. Million-year-old examples of these have been found that give the impression of being ruined by being chipped just one time too many. That pang of regret we have probably all felt after spoiling something by adding that unnecessary final touch was first faced by Ugg in his cave. The thought may be Stone Age but the phrase ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’, which sounds as though it might come from the Roosevelt or Truman era, is more recent than that. This one is widely attributed to T. Bert (Thomas Bertram) Lance, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget in Jimmy Carter’s 1977 administration. He was quoted in the newsletter of the US Chamber of Commerce, Nation’s Business, May 1977: Bert Lance believes he can save Uncle Sam billions if he can get the government to adopt a simple motto: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” He explains: “That’s the trouble with government: Fixing things that aren’t broken and not fixing things that are broken.” Lance certainly did popularise the term but it seems to have been a colloquial phrase in the southern states of the USA before his celebrated use of it. For example, this piece is from the Texas newspaper The Big Spring Herald, December, 1976: “We would agree with the old Georgia farmer who said his basic principle was ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’” Several correspondents from the southern states of the USA have commented that they recall the phrase from well before 1977 - some saying the 1930s. That may be misremembering (which is commonplace in the dating of recently coined phrases) or it may be that the phrase existed in common parlance but not in print. It would be surprising for a phrase to exist in the spoken language for the best part of 50 years before it appeared in print. The Internet has changed the way that new coinages spread and these days a datable record of a new phrase will be apparent within a day or two. Even in the days of newsprint, 50 years is hard to swallow. This suggests that the notion and possibly a variant of the phrase may well have been around for some time before the 1970s, but that the present-day wording of the phrase began then. George Bernard Shaw’s ‘two countries divided by a common language’ comes into play here. The phrase has to be American. In England things don’t get broke, they get broken. Of course ‘ain’t broke’ is intended as a knowing southern yokelism, as opposed to ‘proper’ American, but it is one that wouldn’t have originated anywhere else. In a few short years, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ has, even in the UK, become so established a part of the language as to have become a cliché, which is an unusually quick ascent and descent. Nevertheless, it’s a close call as to whether Lance is now best remembered as coining that phrase or for William Safire’s pithy description of him as ‘Carter’s broken Lance’ after his resignation in 1977, following the Calhoun National Bank corruption scandal.

Motorised table bids for fastest furniture record A British motoring enthusiast is hoping to break the world record for the fastest piece of furniture - with a motorised table that can achieve speeds over 100mph. Buckinghamshire-based amateur mechanic Perry Watkins created the speedy table from a Reliant Scimitar sports car chassis and a fuel-injected 4 litre Land Rover Discovery engine boosted by nitrous oxide injection - plus six chairs, elegant place settings, and a dummy that bears a striking resemblance to Top Gear’s The Stig.
In some nice touches, the exhaust fumes come out of two silver teapots, the brake lights are encases in rolled-up napkins, and the road-legal vehicle’s tax disc is stuck onto the champagne bucket. The table’s driver sits in the centre, with their head sticking out 6
Watkins - whose day job is as a sales director at high street shoe repairer Timpson - says that his table, naturally named Fast Food, has hit speeds of 103mph in test runs. He is now trying to take the fastest furntiure title - set in 2007 by Edd China and his motorised sofa, which reached 92mph - with an official record attempt at Northamptonshire’s Santa Pod Raceway today. Watkins has previously created the world’s lowest car, named the Flatmobile, and the world’s smallest car, christened the Wind Up.

Things are generally very good between us, except when he has been drinking; he doesn’t get violent or abusive, but he starts singing, and normally concludes with a song that I had never heard before, complete with all sorts of theatrical actions, which ends with him grabbing me by the upper arms and screaming at the top of his voice “It’s a rat trap Judy, and we’ve been CAUGHT!” He then normally collapses in a mumbling heap and I have to get him home somehow. What is really disturbing me is the fact that my name is Judy, and I now discover that all of my husband’s previous girlfriend’s or wives (three of them) were also called Judy. Dear Judy, I wouldn’t get worried by this situation, as it is a well known phenomenon in the UK and Ireland for men to fall back on a song from their youth when they are drunk. ‘Rat Trap’ was a massive hit over there in the late ‘70’s for an Irish band called the Boomtown Rats and it was extremely common in those days for drunken young men to act out the part of the character in the song, so much so that psychiatrists have named this type of behaviour as ‘Rat Trap syndrome’. There is obviously something in your husband’s psychological make up that means he is attracted to anyone with the name of the female character in the song, Judy, so I would suggest that you get rid of anyone with that name in your circle of friends or acquaintances pretty damn quick, by any means possible! I would also suggest you get hold of a copy of the album ‘A Tonic For The Troops’ as it is a pretty fine album, while also containing said song. You should find everything will go like clockwork from then on.
