Grand Slam Tennis superstar in town

hua hin, thailand World No 1 tennis player Rafael Nadal arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday (21st) to participate in the £392, 000 (18,800,000 baht) PTT Thailand Open, which will be held at the Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani from Saturday until October 3rd. Nadal has been scheduled to take part in the last two years but has been forced to pull out with injury on both occasions.

The Spaniard, who recently won his first US Open - and a career grand slam - ran into a media army at Suvarnabhumi Airport. But he took a ride straight to Hua Hin for a short break along with eight male friends, and Thai television reports that they are staying at the Intercontinental Hotel just south of the town centre.

Before he plays his first match in Bangkok, Nadal will participate in a tree-planting ceremony at

Thailand Open 2010 on Sept 30, at 6.45pm, which will be presided over by the premier.

Some of the other top players competing in the tournament are Juan Martin Del Potro (currently ranked 9), Fernando Gonzalez (29), Jurgen Melzer (15), Feliciano Lopez (24) and Ernests Gulbis (27), but all eyes in Bangkok and Hua Hin will be on the world’s top ranked player Nadal.

‘A word in edgeways’ or, as it is sometimes written ‘a word in edgewise’ is a 19th century expression which was coined in the UK. ‘Edgeways/edgewise’ just means ‘proceeding edge first’. The allusion in the phrase is to the edging sideways through a crowd, seeking small gaps in which to proceed through the throng.

The phrase ‘edging forward’ exactly describes this inch-by-inch progress and this was first used in the 17th century, typically in nautical contexts and referring to slow advance by means of repeated small tacking movements, as here in Captain John Smith’s The generall historie of Virginia, New-England and the Summer Isles 1624: After many tempests and foule weather, about the foureteenth of March we were in thirteene degrees and an halfe of Northerly latitude, where we descried a ship at hull; it being but a faire gale of wind, we edged towards her to see what she was.

This practice of ‘edging’ was used with reference to the spoken word by David Abercromby, in Art of Converse, 1683: Without giving them so much time as to edge in a word.

The first example found of ‘a word in edgeways’ in print is from the one-act play Twelve precisely! or, A night at Dover, 1821. The names of the lead characters, Amelia Wildlove and Sir Ferdinand Frisky, give a sense of the nature of the play: Sir F. (Aside.) Curse me, if I can get a word in edgeways!

Weird News denny, scotland

Denny wins ‘Worst Scottish Town’ award – after asking for it Denny has snatched design magazine Carbuncle’s award for Scotland’s most dismal town from John O’Groats after residents pleaded for it.

Carbuncle had originally deemed the northerly outpost of John O’Groats, with its ‘torrid environment’ as Scotland’s ugliest place. However, when an offended John O’Groats refused to collect the award, locals from the Stirlingshire town of Denny approached the judging panel for the dubious accolade in the hope that it would prompt some much-needed urban regeneration.

Carbuncle described Denny as being ‘lumbered with a giant mouldering “Battenberg cake” of a town centre’ and the townsfolk are desperate for change. Local Brian McCabe told the BBC: ‘The town centre looks like Beirut on a bad day. It’s a blot on the landscape.

‘It’s a lovely town but as soon as prospective housebuyers drive down the main street, the deal is off.

‘By accepting this award, we want to tap into Urban Realm’s design expertise and approach Falkirk Council to see what can be done.’

Falkirk Council fired back, saying they had ‘no interest in the Carbuncle Awards’ and were focussed on ‘transforming Denny town centre’.

Other towns that get a dishonourable mention in the 2010 Carbuncle Awards include ‘rundown’ East Kilbride; Leeds, where you can ‘smell the poverty’; Glasgow’s Gallowgate, which represents ‘a sub-human wasteland of neglect’ and Scotland’s Cumbernauld – ‘a miserable town, full of miserable people’.

Bulgaria Bank robber falls off bike due to heavy loot A bungling bank robber in Bulgaria was arrested after his loot turned out to be so heavy that he fell off his motorcycle.

The hapless thief was caught when he attempted to make his geaway from a bank robbery with a bag stuffed full of cash - £120,000 worth in total.

Unfortunately for the bank robber, the bag full of money was so heavy that it destabilised the motorcycle, causing him to lose his balance and fall off the vehicle.

Assuming the cash was in the local currency, it would have totalled around 280,000 Bulgarian leva - a currency in which the largest denomination is 100 leva note. The wobbly villain was quickly detained by the Bulgarian authorities.

Things went from bad to worse for the criminal gang, when shortly afterwards the robber’s accomplice was also arrested - when he couldn’t restart his motorbike after it had helpfully stalled right in front of a police station in the town of Petrich, in southwest Bulgaria near the Macedonian-Greek border.

BROTHERS (thanks to Karl for this one) Patrick walks into a bar in Dublin, Orders three pints of Guinness & sits in the corner of the room, Drinking a sip out of each pint in turn. When he had finished all three, He went back to the bar & ordered three more.

The barman says,”You know a pint goes flat soon after I pull it.............................. Your pint would taste better if you bought one at a time.”

Patrick replies, “Well now, I have two brodders, one is in America ; & de odder in Australia ; & here I am in Dublin. When we all left home, we promised dat we’d drink dis way to remember de days we all drank togedder.”

The barman admits that this is a nice custom & says no more.

Patrick becomes a regular customer, & always drinks the same way ....... Ordering three pints & drinking a sip out of each in turn, until they are finished.

One day, he comes in & orders just two pints.

All the other regulars in the bar notice & fall silent.

When he goes back to the bar for the second round, the barman says, “I don’t want to intrude on your grief but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss.”

Patrick looks confused for a moment, then the penny drops & he starts to laugh, “Oh no,” he says, “Bejesus, everyone is fine!

Getting Married (thanks to Grahame) Jacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, living in Devon, are all excited about their decision to get married.

Arsenal v West Brom, 21:00 The Gunners cannot afford to slip up in games like this but the Baggies won’t be a pushover. A fairly tight home win.

Mancini’s Miracle?

Manchester City and Roberto Mancini’s increasingly desperate attempts to mount a title challenge and improve their fan base took a dramatic turn this week as they announced a new signing that they say is a ‘miracle worker’.

Apparently blessed with the talents of both Diego Maradona and Matt Le Tissier, with a touch of Glenn Hoddle thrown in, the £30 million signing is expected to draw crowds from around the world just by being at the stadium.

Joseph Alois Ratzinger is not a name that will be familiar to many football fans in England, but his talent has been described as ‘simply divine’ by some of Italy’s best known players.

Better known by his nickname ‘The Pope’, his new team mates are likely to call him ‘Popey’, ‘Pozza’ or possibly ‘Ratty’ and by all accounts he has already made a great impression, particularly on the youth players, although some were a little unnerved by his demands that they kiss his ring.

Mancini has signed the player in response to recent criticisms that Manchester City cannot win the Premier League with their current

squad, and many pundits feel it is a smart move.

Trevor Francis, well known for his erudite and accurate cocommentating, said, “Mancini has made a great deal here; he approached the player, made him an offer and the player has accepted it.” Jasper Carrott, often mistaken for Francis, said “I’ve heard that he has mastered that

‘Hand of God’ manouevre, he he he he..” before collapsing on the floor.

In light of a recent all time low turnout at the City of Manchester Stadium, Mancini has signed the Pope (left) on a four year deal, in the hope that he can attract the sort of crowds witnessed when he appeared in Birmingham.

“This player makes the headlines.

He has 50,000 or more in awe watching him wherever he goes.

He barely speaks any English.

He fits in well with the boys and he’s fantastic when coming from behind. He’s perfect for the Premier League.”

Not normally one to dish out mass millions for an older player, Mancini assured us that the price was worth it.

“He’s a hard worker. He’s religious.

He’s confessed to me that he has always been a City fan, and that he stood on the vestibules terraces as a lad.”

The Pope, who only cost British Taxpayers a paltry £15 million in his last transfer, is said to be eager to meet his team mates and is hoping that he will be also given a role in helping to groom the youth squad.
