Communication Breakdown 3G: Hua Hin auction cancelled, TOT/AIS make plans
hua hin, thailand Many readers may have missed the news about last week’s 3G auction, due to be held at the Evason Resort in Pranburi on September 20th, being cancelled, as an injunction issued by the Central Administrative Court was upheld by the Supreme Administrative Court on Thursday (23rd). This seemed to sound the death knell for advanced communications ever appearing in a country already lagging badly behind near neighbours, as Vietnam announces its 4G plans, for example. However, brighter news has emerged this week as the Cabinet approved a revised plan by TOT to build a new next-generation mobile network, giving access to one in two people to 3G technology in just over six months.
? TOT plans to build a 19billion baht network on the 2100-megahertz spectrum, and will improve and increase the present 4,700 3G nodes, or base stations, to 5,400 to cover all areas of Bangkok and 12 to 15 key provinces. Meanwhile Advanced Info Service (AIS) says it is ready to start providing commercial 3G services in partnership with TOT as a
so-called mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), following the cabinet approval. TOT will allow 50,000 AIS mobile numbers to roam its 3G network for data services in exchange for voice roaming by the state telecom’s 20,000 customers on AIS’s nationwide 2G network. The failed auction process is estimated to have cost the country 80 million baht.
