Communication Breakdown 3G: Hua Hin auction cancelled, TOT/AIS make plans
hua hin, thailand Many readers may have missed the news about last week’s 3G auction, due to be held at the Evason Resort in Pranburi on September 20th, being cancelled, as an injunction issued by the Central Administrative Court was upheld by the Supreme Administrative Court on Thursday (23rd). This seemed to sound the death knell for advanced communications ever appearing in a country already lagging badly behind near neighbours, as Vietnam announces its 4G plans, for example. However, brighter news has emerged this week as the Cabinet approved a revised plan by TOT to build a new next-generation mobile network, giving access to one in two people to 3G technology in just over six months.
? TOT plans to build a 19billion baht network on the 2100-megahertz spectrum, and will improve and increase the present 4,700 3G nodes, or base stations, to 5,400 to cover all areas of Bangkok and 12 to 15 key provinces. Meanwhile Advanced Info Service (AIS) says it is ready to start providing commercial 3G services in partnership with TOT as a
so-called mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), following the cabinet approval. TOT will allow 50,000 AIS mobile numbers to roam its 3G network for data services in exchange for voice roaming by the state telecom’s 20,000 customers on AIS’s nationwide 2G network. The failed auction process is estimated to have cost the country 80 million baht.

And we’re certainly living in a “to boot” culture. Rent a car and they throw in airline tickets to boot. Buy a refrigerator and they give you a television to boot. File a tax return and they give you a free ride to the cleaners to boot. That last one may not count, but you get the drift. One might assume that “to boot” must have something to do with our normal, pedestrian sort of boot. One would, however, be wrong. The boot you wear on your foot (one of a pair, under optimal conditions) comes from the Old French “bote.” The verb “to boot” also comes from this footwear sense, meaning “to kick” or “to kick out.” The use of “to boot” meaning “to start the process by which a computer gets itself up and running” harks back to the phrase “to pick oneself up by one’s bootstraps,” meaning to be self-sufficient and enterprising. “To boot” meaning “in addition” comes, however, from an entirely different source. The Old English “bot” meant “advantage or good,” and came in turn from the root Germanic “bat,” meaning “good or useful,” which was also the source of our modern “better” and “best.” This sense of “boot” as “something good” led to its use, at various points, to mean “a remedy,” “a mending” “compensation for wrongs,” and even “expiation of sins.” There was even a right of “boot,” meaning the custom of permitting a tenant to repair his house with lumber from his landlord’s forest. And “to do boot” was to do a good deed or render a favour to someone. Of all these senses, however, only our modern sense of “to boot” as meaning “in addition,” which first appeared way back around A.D. 1000, still survives in common usage today. Robert Manning of Brunne included a version of it in Langtoft’s Chronicle, 1330: “A hundreth knyghtes mo... and four hundreth to bote, squieres of gode aray.”

Bournemouth Barclays bank bricked up by irate property developer
Property developer Cameron Hope has bricked up the front door of a Barclays branch in Bournemouth after being turned down for a business loan. Mr Hope was supported by other local business owners as he built a 2.4m (8ft) by 1.2m (4ft) wall in front of a branch of Barclays in Bournemouth. Mr Hope used breeze blocks and posters to obstruct the main door of the bank, which he claims has treated him unfairly during the economic downturn. The 59-year-old, whose protest has been widely 6
publicised in the area, said: ‘The banks are stifling economic recovery by not lending to businesses. ‘Enough is enough.’ The wall was taken down after police threatened to arrest the protesters. Mike Shephard, from the Department of Environment and Conservation in Albany, Western Australia told the BBC: ‘If you are in the way of a tail slap...you are unlikely to survive,’ ‘Disturbance or physical contact with them...not only distresses the whales but also could result in a tragic outcome for a foolhardy person,’ Shephard added. Western Australia has strict laws in place, in order to protect the whales off its shores, including a minimum distance of 30m for swimmers and surfers.

DEAR MARY - A RETRACTION Last week this column featured a letter from a man who had fallen for the owner of the ‘Lager Time Group’ bar. At the request of the owner of the real Lager Time Group bar we are printing this retraction of said letter, and the response to it from Mary. At no time did the events described in the letter actually occur between the letter writer (Sydney, Pranburi) and the owner of the real Lager Time Group bar. The events described may have occurred between the letter writer and the owner of another bar, possibly known as the Beer O’clock Club, which is located in Khao Takiab, Thailand. However due to the possibility of legal action, we will refer to said owner as Mr X. We approached Mr X to allow us an interview to clear up this misunderstanding and here is an edited transcript of that interview: AWOL: Did you have sexual relations with that man, (Sydney, Pranburi)? Torry Mr X: Well that depends what you mean by ‘sexual relations’ doesn’t it? AWOL: OK, did you have sexual intercourse with that

Ball In Hand Brunswick Hua Hin & Khao Takiab League At press time it appears as though the existing league will continue, renamed to the Ball In Hand Hua Hin Pool League, with some teams departing to form their own league, probably called the Hua Hin and Khao Takiab Pool League, although at present it is not known if both will include mixed and ladies leagues. The intention appears to be to continue the highly popular ladies league as is though, with a proposed start date of Monday11th October. Both mixed leagues plan to start next Wednesday 6th October. Please contact Mike at Sunset Boulevard regarding the existing leagues or Bob at Dara Bar for the new ones.
