hua hin, THAILAND For the third year running Hua Hin will host the world’s top female tennis stars on New Year’s Day for an exhibition match, and this time the proceeds are being donated to help those affected by the catastrophic flooding that hit Thailand this year. World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki will return to Thailand to face third-ranked Victoria Azarenka in the charity match being held once again at the Inter Continental Hua Hin Resort’s Centennial Park, south of the town. Denmark’s Wozniacki, who won six titles this year, played Kim Clijsters at the Hua Hin event at the start of 2011. “I had a fantastic time in Thailand last year and it is a pleasure to be back again,” said Wozniacki who has claimed 18 WTA titles. “I have seen some of the pictures of the terrible floods and I am delighted to be a part of the World Tennis Charity Invitation and help raise money for the flood relief.” Belarus’ Azarenka, who has won eight titles including three this year, will make her first appearance in Thailand. “This will be my first visit to Thailand and I am very excited,” said Azarenka. “I am really pleased to go there and play for the Thai fans and help raise money to assist people who have been affected by the devastating floods.” The World Tennis Charity Invitation also features Thai legend Paradorn Srichaphan who will return to action against world No.18 John Isner, said Suwat Liptapanlop, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand. American Isner had the most successful season of his career this year with two titles. “I am very pleased to return to Thailand and visit Hua Hin for the first time. Former world No.9 Paradorn, who retired in 2006, is glad to be part of the event. “It is nice to be part of this charity event. It is nice to make a return although it is just for a charity match. Of course, my fitness is not as perfect as it was many years ago. But as Thailand is the host of the event, I am very pleased to play and help raise funds for the flood relief efforts,” he said. “It will also help promote tourism in Thailand in general and Hua Hin in particular. “I have never played John Isner but trained with him a couple of times. He played in the Thailand Open a few years ago.” Wozniacki will arrive in Thailand on December 26th while Azarenka and Isner are scheduled to arrive on December 29th. There is speculation that the world No 1 might be accompanied by her boyfriend and world golf No 2 Rory McIlroy who is due to play the Thailand Golf Championships two weeks before the charity event. The event will be televised live on Channel 3 and ESPN from 5pm. Tickets are priced at 2,000 baht each and are available from Thai Ticket Major (tel. 02-262-3456, www.thaiticketmajor.com).

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Hard-hearted Lacking mercy; incapable of pity. The first mention in print in English of the term ‘hardhearted’ is in Geoffrey Chaucer’s 1374 translation of Consolation of Philosophy, the 6th century treatise by the Roman philosopher Anicius Boethius: Ne no tere ne wette his face, but he was so hard-herted. There are references to ‘a hardened heart’ in early Latin and Old English versions of the Bible and Chaucer may have been influenced by that. However, he does appear to be the first person to have used ‘hard-hearted’ in print. The term reflects the mediaeval belief that the heart was the organ that controlled one’s thoughts and feelings there being no understanding of the functioning of the brain at that time. The belief was that the condition of the heart reflected the senses in a direct and literal way. We have retained several mediaeval expressions that we now see as entirely figurative but which were previously akin to a medical diagnosis: - Cold-hearted - Light-hearted - Broken-hearted - Half-hearted - Hard-hearted - Faint-hearted - Whole-hearted The last on that list, whole-hearted, is atypical in that it is a 19th century term and derives from a different meaning of ‘hearted’, i.e. ‘courageous;spirited’. The transition from literal to figurative meaning is matched by the transition in the spelling of the terms.
Initially, the two words were usually written separately, then later as a hyphenated pair and finally as a single word. Someone with a ‘light heart’ was initially ‘light hearted’, later ‘light-hearted’ and more recently ‘lighthearted’ - for example: John Palsgrave’s dictionary Lesclarcissement de la Langue Francoyse, 1530: “Lyght herted or mery, alaigre.” William Cowper’s poem The Task, 1785: “He whistles as he goes, light-hearted wretch, Cold and yet cheerful.” Wilkie Collins’s novel Queen of Hearts, 1859: “Mrs. Knifton began to make jokes about it, in her lighthearted way.” The 15th century literal way of thinking (and spelling) was resurrected in the 1920s in the popular Tin-Pan Alley song Hard Hearted Hannah: They call her Hard Hearted Hannah, The vamp of Savannah, The meanest gal in town; Leather is tough, but Hannah’s heart is tougher, She’s a gal who loves to see men suffer! Of course, to be ‘hearted’ these days we just need a T-shirt. The ‘I heart NY’ message began being used in the USA in the 1980s and, in January 2011, the OED defined a new meaning of the verb heart as “To love; to be fond of: - originally with reference to logos using the symbol of a heart to denote the verb ‘love’”, which is as close as we can get to an acceptance that the symbol is now part of the language. At the session last week, the priest asked Giuseppe, who said he was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same woman all these years. Giuseppe replied to the assembled husbands, ‘Wella, I’va tried to treat her nicea, spenda da money on her, but besta of all is, I tooka her to Italy for the 25th anniversary!’ The priest responded, ‘Giuseppe, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Nanning, China Stuntman hits the nail on the head – by balancing upside down on a thin spike Next time you have a sore head, spare a thought for Li Xin who has quite literally hit the nail on the head. Xin entertained the crowds when he balanced on his head on the end on a spike. Putting his hands out to the side, he balanced all his 66kg (10st 7lb) body weight, putting intense pressure on his skull. The 47-year-old has practised the stunt for more than 20 years. He can hold the pose on top of the spike for more than ten seconds – impressive, seeing as most people would struggle to keep their balance doing a floor head-stand. After the stunt, Li Xin leaned forward to show off a small but definite indent on the top of his

head. It’s not just his head that is as hard as nails – he also balanced all his body weight on a similar spike against his stomach. The spike was placed on a stool and Li Xin pulled back his shirt and lowered his body onto the spike. He then lifted his arms and legs in

the air, holding a starfish pose. The likelihood of this spike piercing his skin is reduced because the end is shaped into a larger blunt arrow, meaning there is more surface area for Li Xin to balance upon. The folk artist was taking part in a stunt event in Nanning, China.

Chelsea are undergoing a transformation under Villas-Boas, and a much needed one because their squad is getting old. They were flattered by the scoreline last weekend and were lucky to end with eleven men on the pitch, but the result was important. This game will be a test of both sides, and we suspect that Chelsea may be quite physical in an attempt to put City out of their stride. City were also slightly flattered by their final scoreline last week, but there is always a sense that they have another gear to shift into. Both sides have been conceding goals so we think this could be a pulsating draw, and maybe the sort of game that Fernando Torres will reannounce himself in, if given the chance.

Man Utd fans face long trip to Manchester for FA Cup tie
london, england Fans of Premier League giants Manchester United are facing the prospect of a long journey up the M6 after they were handed an FA Cup third round tie against Manchester City. Some supporters of the current Premier League champions have revealed that actually going to a game will prove too difficult, and they will have to make do with watching the game on television like they normally do anyway. “I was hoping for something a bit more local,” said disappointed fan Richard Young. “I’ve supported United since they started winning everything, and I haven’t missed a game that’s been televised since.” “Hopefully if we win through to round four we’ll get a local derby against Swindon.”
