high winds and high tides wreak havoc
hua hin, THAILAND High winds caused by a ridge of high pressure that unexpectedly moved south from China, combined with exceptionally high tides to create waves of up to four metres in height which have devastated parts of the coastline around Hua Hin and further south. Fortunately, so far there have not been any reports of fatalities. Early on Christmas Day, around 3am, was the first local sign as a number of restaurants and shops were destroyed by the high waves in Hua Hin, and the pounding continued as seawater inundated many houses in Khao Takiab village. Fishermen were advised to stay ashore, while warnings were issued to people to stay away from the sea. The waves eroded about one kilometre of the coastline at Thung Pradu coastal village in Thap Sakae district. Deputy Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Apinand Chantharangsi said on Tuesday that the province had declared Hua Hin, Sam Roi Yot, Kui Buri and Thap Sakae districts disaster areas. An initial survey found more than 500 households had been affected by strong waves, Mr Apinand said. Athikul Budying, deputy mayor of Hua Hin municipality, ordered municipal officials to survey damage caused by the waves and help people move their belongings to higher ground. By Wednesday the severe waves were subsiding but waves of two to three metres are still frecast through to New Year’s Day, while further south was still being battered, particularly in the districts in and around Surat Thani, and conditions were being made worse by heavy rains in other areas, with the risk of flash floods. People in, or travelling to, ten southern provinces of Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani, Satun, Narathiwat, Krabi and Trang, have been advised to keep a close eye on the weather reports and take care near the coastline, in low-lying areas and on mountain slopes.

cheshire, england Flatfish found in aquarium after lying undiscovered for 15 years A 40cm-long flatfish has been discovered in an aquarium after remaining undetected for 15 years. The bottom-dwelling sand sole dubbed Nemo - was only discovered when its 40,000-litre open native rockpool tank was routinely cleaned at the Blue Planet Aquarium in Cheshire. But despite being quite a large fish, staff think the fish may have been a stowaway when the tank was delivered in 1996 as they had no records of the flatfish having arrived at the aquarium . Acting curator Colin Grist said: ‘We’ve called him Nemo, because we’ve found him, just like in the film - except we didn’t know we
were looking. ‘Although we haven’t been aware of its existence it seems to have been doing extremely well. It’s in perfect condition and has obviously been feeding well and probably waiting until the lights go out to go hunting. FA hand Carroll eight-match run in Liverpool side as punishment for suarez’ comments
liverpool, england Liverpool fans have revealed their disappointment after the Football Association handed Andy Carroll an eight-match run in the starting eleven because Luis Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. Carroll, who cost the club around ten times his actual value, has made the majority of his appearances from the subs bench, but with Suarez suspended he could be handed the opportunity to be completely ineffectual right from the start of the next eight fixtures, demonstrated admirably by the Boxing day draw with Blackburn. The club released a statement expressing their disappointment with the FA’s decision.
“Liverpool Football Club is very surprised and disappointed with the decision of the Football Association commission to allow Andy Carroll such a large amount of time on the pitch.” “Kenny likes to use Andy as a nonimpact sub, but this unprecedented decision could see games passing Andy by for the full ninety minutes, rather than just the last fifteen.” Critics of the decision have insisted that being forced to play Andy Carroll for what could amount to two months is a punishment that simply does not fit the crime. “It’s not like Suarez killed anyone, is it? If he had, I could sort of understand such draconian measures,” said fan Simon Matthews. The club are currently preparing
