hua hin, THAILAND In the lead up to Christmas you may recall that we ran a front page story headlined ‘Peace And Goodwill’, which featured information about a local charity’s fundraising efforts. The charity is the Bright Dawn Foundation, and this week we have been informed how those efforts have been going, and this is news we are very pleased to share with our readers. The featured fundraising effort in that story was a prize quiz, which raised over 11,000 baht, but the even better news is that the foundation has received a very generous donation from the Hua Hin Golf Society, who held a charity golf day and a charity dinner at the Dusit in December, and the total money raised was 244,964 baht. This money has all been donated specifically to fund the Bright Dawn Foundation’s computer literacy project at Huay Sai Ngam School in Nong Plub. This project involves upgrading the present computer classroom and installing 9 new computers. This special learning centre will be designed to teach the children basic computer skills and give them access to the internet and Thai language distance learning programs relevant to the subjects they study at school. The Foundation has ongoing involvement in three primary schools in the area, all of which suffer from a general lack of resources and funding, particularly serious teacher staffing shortages, food shortages and rundown and dilapidated buildings. so while the money that has been raised is fantastic, more help is always needed. Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is..SOPA SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act (also known as House Bill 3261 or H.R. 3261), and is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill, if made law, would expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. However many believe that SOPA (and it’s Senate cousin known as the Protect IP Act) are written in such a way that almost any website could be accused of breaking the law, and this includes ones outside of the USA - in fact these are the main target of the Act. Why is this in English Corner? Opponents to this Act are adamant that not only is it against the First Amendment of the US Constitution, but that it could also end most people’s normal use of the Internet; as this column, and others in AWOL make extensive use of internet research to bring you interesting and entertaining reading, that could mean an end to this column or possibly even this newspaper. ‘Surely that is an exaggeration?’ we hear you cry! Well, the answer to that is probably best made by quoting a few of the many well read and educated people, and organisations who are opposing SOPA: On November 15, 2011 Google, Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, eBay, Mozilla, Yahoo, AOL, and LinkedIn wrote to key members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, saying SOPA poses “a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job creation, as well as to our nation’s cybersecurity.” Yahoo
has reportedly quit the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over the organization’s enthusiastic support for SOPA. The European Parliament adopted a resolution last month stressing “the need to protect the integrity of the global Internet and freedom of communication by refraining from unilateral measures to revoke IP addresses or domain names.” Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, said in a message on Twitter last week that we “need to find a better solution than #SOPA.” A letter signed by Reps. Zoe Lofgren and Anna Eshoo, both California Democrats, and Rep. Ron Paul, the Republican presidential candidate from Texas, predicts that SOPA will invite “an explosion of innovation-killing lawsuits and litigation.” Former CNN journalist Rebecca MacKinnon argues that making companies liable for users’ actions could have a chilling effect on user-generated sites such as YouTube. Policy analysts for New America Foundation say this legislation would enable law enforcement to take down an entire domain due to something posted on a single blog, arguing, “an entire largely innocent online community could be punished for the actions of a tiny minority.” SOPA would give both the government and major corporations the power to shut down entire websites accused of copyright infringement with neither a trial nor a traditional court hearing. The legislation is aggressively backed by Hollywood movie studios and major record labels, along with several major news providers, including Fox News and NBC-Universal, which have largely shied away from coverage of the bill. This week saw the first of a series of deliberate internet blackouts by sites such as Wikipedia, and there is an online petition which AWOL encourages you to sign. We believe that SOPA is a poorly written bill which, if passed, would become the digital equivalent of book burning, or possibly more accurately, library burning.

An initial list of films to be shown at the festival between 26 - 29 January has now been released, although exact dates and times are still not available, and more may be added. Itapetinga, brazil Dealer caught after forcing addicts to tattoo his name on their bodies A drug dealer in Brazil was caught after forcing more than 70 addicts to tattoo his surname on their bodies. Mario Sergio Freudenthal told users he would sell to them only if they agreed to be marked. Motivated by a ‘huge ego’, he was snared after police spotted his name inked on robbery suspects and dead bodies. After making inquiries, police easily traced him, as he was the only person called Freudenthal in Itapetinga, a small town in Brazil. This isn’t the first time a criminal has been caught because of a tattoo. A car thief was jailed in Bristol after a tattoo on his neck, which contained his surname and date of birth, was captured by

rocket man Research into Andy Carroll’s first touch to be used for satellite launches, confirms space agency
liverpool, england Research into the effectiveness of Andy Carroll’s first touch has led the European Space agency to enquire about his availability for upcoming satellite launches. The Liverpool striker’s close control has come under intense scrutiny in recent months, and despite it being described by some pundits as neither ‘close’ or ‘in control’, researchers at the European Space Agency insist it could prove invaluable in improving the efficiency of launching expensive technology into orbit. European Space Agency Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain, revealed that Carroll’s ability to propel a football vast distances away from his body with what appears to be minimal effort could herald an exciting new era in space technology.

“We will be contacting Liverpool to enquire about Andy Carroll’s availability, in the hope that we can carry out further tests based on our observations of his performances in recent games,” he told us. Mr Dordain also revealed that the tests will be carried out in a natural environment that will allow Carroll to feel totally relaxed.

“We have constructed a a mock-up of a Newcastle nightclub called the Blu Bambu club, and we will carry out the tests at around 3 O’clock in the morning,” he revealed. Mr Dordain also went on to reveal the simplicity of the testing itself. “We are hoping that if someone passes the satellite to Andy from somewhere over fifteen yards, we will be able to sit back and watch as it drifts upwards towards the stratosphere,” he said.
