hua hin, THAILAND Early February may seem like an unusual time to look back on the last twelve months, but given how odd that period has been both in Hua Hin, Thailand and around the globe it seems as good a time as any. Hua Hin has had more than it’s fair share of the oddness going around, mixed in with some of the usual suspects that make life in Thailand a strange combination of absolute paradise and total hell on occasion. Natural phenomena have been the biggest headline makers nationally, with a furore of flooding and other extreme weather afflicting most parts. Hua Hin and the coast south was battered by some whacky waves, as well as some wild winds in recent months, and a common phrase heard recently was ‘Rain in January??’. Much can be explained by the El Nino and La Nina events though, with more weird weather predicted this year. The threat of terrorism, and the reality of the floods, have combined to make Thailand a less attractive proposition, especially as once again foreign governments got trigger happy with their travel advisories. This has certainly effected Hua Hin this high season, although the influx of people from Bangkok and elsewhere during the flooding has partially offset that, and long term may be ultimately beneficial to business here, as both Thai and foreign buyers look to Hua Hin as a safe place to make a home. The final ‘oddness’ to comment on is the peculiar timing of many major works and events in recent months; examples are the drainage work on Phetkasem Road north of town; the canal road widening; the Khao Takiab project; and strangest of all, the Market Village car park reconstruction. All of these were started either in the lead up to, or during high season. Do they know something? Can we expect snow at Songkran?!

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. A slang term for male masturbation, which leaves little This week it is.. Up the duff Euphemism for pregnant. Used most commonly, although to the imagination - ‘pull one’s pudding’, has been known since at least the 19th century. There is a related phrase not exclusively, to describe unplanned pregnancy. The phrase doesn’t appear in print until 1941, in Sydney for pregnancy - ‘in the pudding club’, and it turns out that this and ‘up the duff’ are essentially the same phrase. jakarta, indonesia Train passengers on roof hit with brooms drenched in putrid gunge Indonesia has shunned more modern technology in favour of a number of bizarre methods to deter passengers from clambering onto train roofs, which many do to get some air, because they can’t afford a ticket, or just for kicks. Journeys up on top of the vehicles are increasingly resembling a deadly game show, with paint guns, sniffer dogs, concrete balls and Muslim clerics all brought out to deter these ‘rail surfers’ in the past. Brooms covered in putrid gunge are now to be installed at select crossings, with Ahmad Sujadi, of the state-run railway PT Kereta Api Indonesia, promising that the sensation of being hit by one of the
contraptions will be ‘like a whip’. He said: ‘Some people say it’s inhumane, but that’s fine. Because letting them ride on the roofs is even more inhumane.’ The most successful method of getting roof surfers back into carriages has so far been the grapefruit-sized concrete balls, which are suspended on chains from a football goal-like frame. Passengers on the roof quickly realised that they could be hit on the head by the deadly devices, and retreated to the safety of the train. Buoyed with the success of these medieval contraptions, the rail company will soon begin installing the gunge brooms along the line linking the capital Jakarta and the West Java town of Bogor from today.

Since its creation, it has been shown in nearly 100 cities around the world. After a 7-year tour, both artists have decided to end “Pichet Klunchun and Myself” where it all started… in Thailand at the new theatre of Patravadi Mejudhon, at Vic Hua Hin!
