awol website revamped and relaunched
hua hin, THAILAND By the time this AWOL hits the streets, the long worked on (and possibly long awaited) revamp of the AWOL website will be done, and our website back online. With the exception of the AWOL Forum, which remains largely unchanged (having had it’s own makeover last year), the entire site has been remodelled with major additions introduced and new features added. The biggest changes are what we believe to be a more streamlined and user friendly look, an integrated login and registration system which does away with the need to have separate identities on the different sections, new Directory section and revamped Travel section, an events section that mirrors and expands on the Hua Hin Live and Balloon Chasers sections in the paper and allows anyone to submit their events online, an integrated contact form that does away with the need to fire up your email provider or mail software, online submission of your property to rent or for sale (for a small flat fee or on a commission agreement) and a whole lot more. There are now six distinct parts of the AWOL website - AWOLonline, Classifieds, Directory, Forum, Property and Travel. More will be added in the future, and more information, entertainment and other useful and fun content will be added - but not just by us; the stage is set for you, our readers to join in. If you have an existing Forum or Classifieds account you can log in with those (following some simple steps to activate them sitewide) or for those who don’t there is a simple registration process just go to www.awolonline.net and click the Log In or Register button and follow the instructions given. Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. found is a quotation from Samuel Purchas’s Purchas his This week it is.. special pig A guy is driving through the countryside and suddenly develops car trouble. The highway is rather deserted, and having no other choice, he pulls his car over. Fortunately he sees a farmhouse a little ways up, and walks there in hope of using a phone to call for help. At the house a farmer answers the door, and hearing the man’s plight, welcomes him in to use the phone. While the man is on the phone calling a towing service, he notices something odd in the farmer’s backyard – a pig with a wooden leg. Waiting for the tow truck, the two strike up a conversation. The man can’t help his curiosity and asks the farmer, “Was that a pig with a wooden leg I saw in your yard?” “Sure was,” the farmer replies. The man says, “I have to know, why does the pig have a wooden leg?” “Well, that’s a very special pig,” the farmer says. “One day, I tripped and sprained my ankle near the highway. That pig pulled me from harm’s way and went to the house, got my wife, and let her know I was in trouble.” “Wow,” the man said. “I don’t know of many dogs that could do that. That is a special pig. But, please tell me, why does the pig have a wooden leg?” “Well, as I was saying,” the farmer replied, “that’s a very special pig. Bratislava, slovakia Chuck Norris to have bridge named after him in Slovakia following vote The bridge, which crosses the Morova river into Austria, looks set to be known as the Chuck Norris Bridge with the film star currently having 74 per cent of the vote. As it stands, 1,157 votes have been cast in favour of Norris, largely because of his ‘kitsch’ popularity among Slovaks. His name is often the punchline in jokes relating to macho strength. The final decision will be made by the regional assembly but officials have said that the internet ballot’s decision will be respected. Regional governor Pavol Freso, said: ‘The same way as we have so far been building it in full sight of the public, we will seek that the name is
accepted by the public as well.’ Also in contention for the name of the bridge are former AustroHungarian empress Maria Thereas, who currently has eight per cent of the vote in second place. presentations The presentation was held at Beer O’Clock and hosted by Torry. An enjoyable evening where the winners and runners-up of the Singles competition and of the League were presented with their trophies. The singles competition was particularly tough this season as there were sixty four entrants. Photos show (clockwise from top): Nick from Sinatra’s who came first in the singles competition; Tong from Dara’s Bar who came second; Some of the Dara’s bar team who came second in the league; Torry from Beer O’Clock Club who came third in the Singles; The Beach Hut team who won first place in the league and owner Mike who also had the best averages for the season.
